We would like to welcome and really thank Emily for joining us today. Thank you for being here on Remuneration Recap.
Speaker 1:Yeah, thank you so much for having us.
Speaker 2:Can you hear it? Yes, yay there we go. You can hear it the live studio audience Not really.
Speaker 3:The live recorded live studio audience.
Speaker 2:Yes, yes, we so appreciate you being here, and I'm going to tell you, because we're both broken, we are, and we can't currently travel although or run, or run, but from what I hear, you are a 50 stater. Is that correct? It is and how many states have you done? 25 so far.
Speaker 3:So we can have her on 24 more times is what I'm hearing.
Speaker 2:No, no, no no no no, there's only if she recommends the races from the States.
Speaker 3:Oh, that's true. See, a lot of people, a lot of people don't realize that we edit out so much. They have no idea We've done races that we didn't think were warranted the show. We've gone to restaurants that we didn't think warranted the show, and we've. We have drank plenty of drinks and eat plenty of food that we're just like and we're not going to contribute to the negativity on the internet there's plenty of that out there without us adding to it.
Speaker 2:Exactly so. We have invited you here to recap a race that everybody should know about. But first, I think, people should get to know you, so we always ask this first for those who don't know you in the Runcation Nation can you tell us a little bit about your life outside running, who you are, where you're from and what you're drinking while we chat?
Speaker 1:Sure Hello again. I'm Emily. I am a non-running note. I'm a traveler, an adventurer, I'm a scuba diver. I do a lot of things besides just running. I, I do. I am drinking a. Two roads, no limits, type of isa two roads in southern connecticut. I am from connecticut and born and raised here.
Speaker 2:I live in a few different states, but finally back here, working here, living here with family okay, before this interview started, I'm gonna to tell you that Emily and I were messaging on Instagram, okay, and she says here I've she.
Speaker 3:I always send out the questions in advance and yeah, we're not exactly hard hitting journalism here, folks, but just saying anyway, I try to be prepared, I try to prepare people.
Speaker 2:But and she's, here's what I'm drinking tonight and she sent a photo of it and I was like be still my former English teacher heart, because it's a Robert Frost poem Two roads.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, they have, they take, or they took sections of the poem itself and then have it kind of plastered around the brewery, which is really cool.
Speaker 2:I really want to go there now.
Speaker 3:Oh heck yeah.
Speaker 2:Can we go there?
Speaker 3:Listen, you had me at Hefeweizen. Okay, let's be perfectly clear. That's one of my favorite styles of beer period. I love the flavor profile. I don't know that I've met one that I didn't love.
Speaker 2:That's true I agree, it's true, it's got the banana and the clove. What have brewers said? The bubblegum kind of flavor. Yes, yes.
Speaker 3:You often hear it talked about like that. Since we're doing this kind of an impromptu, could you tell us about the beer you're drinking? How do you like?
Speaker 1:it? How do you like?
Speaker 3:it. What are?
Speaker 1:So this is actually I've had it before. This is actually one of my favorite beers I've ever had. Oh, I like Heffas in general because I feel like they have a very, very flavorful profile and I really like to enjoy different. If it's a different fruit that they're using or different spice combination, I just really like drinking them. Yeah, and then I also finished the 2023 Disney Marathon with the Grapefruit Hefeweizen from the Germany Pavilion. That's the one that we got the hug like right after.
Speaker 3:I got my beer.
Speaker 1:I gave you a hug.
Speaker 3:Is that Schafferhofer?
Speaker 1:Schafferhofer yes, yes, that one.
Speaker 3:And Schafferhofer is one of our absolute favorites, especially for hot weather.
Speaker 1:It's a delightful beer, perfect for mile 25 of the marathon.
Speaker 2:You're like, you're almost there. Who cares?
Speaker 3:And its ABV is so low it's almost a rounding error. It's like 2%, it's like 3% 3%.
Speaker 1:It's very refreshing too, like you don't feel heavy afterwards.
Speaker 3:Exactly yeah, and you finished strong.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 3:At that race.
Speaker 1:I wouldn't finish standing.
Speaker 3:Yes, that's strong.
Speaker 2:That is strong At a marathon that's strong, and let's just clarify not only a marathon but the whole dopey challenge, which is a 5K, a 10K, a half and a full in four days.
Speaker 3:Yes.
Speaker 2:Boom, that's brag worthy. And then I think she turned around and supported the Runcation Nation team at the Donna and did you not do the booby trap? Okay, and full marathon.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I couldn't pass that one up. That was. I love the name of it. It's so perfect, isn't it?
Speaker 2:And the medal when you finish both races with the shells and the bonus medal. How can you not? How can you not, and it's for a great cause.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and last year was my mom's 20th anniversary of beating breast cancer.
Speaker 3:Oh, fantastic that is, that's amazing.
Speaker 2:Now. Will we see you at Donna in the future sometime.
Speaker 1:Hopefully next year, if I can swing it.
Speaker 2:I hope so. I hope so because I missed the year that you two were there together and I was so sad that I missed it me too, because, man, that was a busy weekend.
Speaker 3:Yeah, it was. You don't realize I? Well, it's busy anyway. And then if you're trying to do all the podcast stuff in addition, I'm like this is two-person, this is a three-person job.
Speaker 1:We do it with two, yeah, and now I'm having to do it with one, so yeah, I think some of the We'll Run For crew is going to be heading down next year too.
Speaker 2:I hope so. I would love, love, love to have like a podcast party at Donna.
Speaker 1:That'd be so much.
Speaker 2:Donna, We'll run for Tom.
Speaker 3:Diana, let's talk.
Speaker 2:Yes, aaron, who apparently organizes everything, and Michael, please message us. Yes, but I digress.
Speaker 3:Yeah, yes, okay, everybody. You've gotten to know her a little bit. Now Yeah's dive in. How exactly did you get into running?
Speaker 1:so I followed my sister a little bit. My sister got into run disney a bit before I did and I saw her doing these races and I was like, oh, that's kind of neat. And we I was doing family trips as well so we all made a big family trip down and see her run and went to the parks and stuff. It was fun. And then I all of a sudden was graduating college and oh, by the way, I got a Disney internship at Walt Disney World. Yeah, I just thought this is going to be amazing. There's going to be a lot to learn, lots to do. There's a Star Wars race down here. What the inaugural Star Wars Dark Side 5K, was my first ever road race and then I went right afterward you did it after work?
Speaker 2:yep, oh my god, we were there we were there, we did, but we did the 10k yes, 10k did we.
Speaker 3:we did 10k and a half, I believe, we did yeah, yeah, nice. Because that year we got our first yeah.
Speaker 2:It might have been the next year, though.
Speaker 3:No, because we got our Kessel Run, because we did the Star Wars Light Side out in California.
Speaker 2:So fun. That medal is awesome. If you are a Star Wars fan, are you a Star Wars fan? Big one, hashtag, bring. If you are a star, are you a star wars fan? Big one hashtag, bring back star wars races. Yes, we love it too. Did we not see that in california? Oh, do we not see people that were?
Speaker 1:out there the signs for a springtime surprise, still dress up in star wars did they really?
Speaker 3:yeah, a lot of people do when we were in california, california, this year they had members of the 501st out on the course.
Speaker 1:I saw that yeah.
Speaker 3:And their signs were hysterical. It was all about Disney. Bring back the races, Because they used to have out there for their races. The 501st representation was bigger and had better costumes than the Disney employees.
Speaker 1:Yep, it was great. I remember was it 2017? I did my first half marathon. I moved to Star Wars Dark Side and I had hurt my knee right before, but I was stubborn and stupid and said I paid far too much for this race, so I'm going to walk it anyway, why not?
Speaker 3:Been there, done that.
Speaker 1:Yep, and because I was watching it, I was everybody who was a lot faster than I was had already gone ahead and the lines for characters were a lot shorter. Hey, there you go. I stopped at almost every Star Wars character on that course, and I believe some of the 501st was also there as well.
Speaker 3:They were.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I have pictures with a bunch of them, yep.
Speaker 3:And their costumes were fantastic. They they get to a level of detail that the disney folks don't do. They dirty them up. They don't let you come into the 501st with like super polished stuff unless it's a character that's always super polished yeah, I love it.
Speaker 2:I love it okay. So you talked about what your first race was, that you were lured in by the run Disney magic, which is how we were lured in. Let's just be real. And so the question becomes how did you get into the 50 states challenge?
Speaker 1:A very good friend of mine who is actually now my goddaughter's mother she had. I met her during a race out at Cedar Point in Ohio and I said, oh, it'd be really cool to run through, maybe try a different theme park, right? So that's why I picked Cedar Point, because I love roller coasters, running Roller coaster, of course. So I met her during the half and she was wearing a princess shirt and I said, oh, I love Run Disney. We were about the same pace-ish and we just started talking and then it blossomed from there hey, I'm doing this race. Hey, I'm doing this race. Let's try maybe running through other theme parks. Let's try running in other destinations. And that quickly turned into oh, let's just do a half marathon in every state we applaud that.
Speaker 2:We have met several 50 staters around the country alaska and kentucky and we just I here in florida yes, and we love it. We love that. I don't, I just't. We have to get well first, don't?
Speaker 3:we that would be a good start In due time or we do what runners normally do, which she alluded to, which is ignore it, and It'll go away.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's fine yeah.
Speaker 3:It'll be fine.
Speaker 1:It's a flesh wound, no so then the other question becomes what is the race that you are going to highlight and recap that everybody should put on their bucket list and do so? I did one. Actually, I did it again this past Sunday. It's called the Mystic Half Marathon in Connecticut. It's probably my favorite half marathon in Connecticut. It's very pretty, it's very scenic, excellent race support and coordination. It's just a great overall race, in my opinion, for up here.
Speaker 2:Okay, so tell us the name of it again the Mystic Half Marathon. Mystic Like the song.
Speaker 3:Or like the pizza.
Speaker 2:Yeah, like the movie from the 80s with Julia Roberts. No.
Speaker 3:There's a deep cut.
Speaker 2:No, nobody knows that, except for Amy.
Speaker 3:Oh, I'm the one that made the reference. Hello, I doubt that Emily knows that she's too young to know that reference.
Speaker 2:Okay, sorry, okay, yes, wait am.
Speaker 3:I right? Are you too young to know that reference?
Speaker 2:I don't know, unless 92. Dang it.
Speaker 3:Delete.
Speaker 2:She's delete, she's off.
Speaker 3:Oh, unless there are older people who might have shown her, forced her to watch the julia roberts classic.
Speaker 1:No, they. I was never home growing up. Okay, I'm still never home, but that's another story.
Speaker 3:Oh no, okay, so it's the mystic half marathon that we're recapping yes I got it so you're gonna have to guide us through this, because one we haven't been to your home state yet and we want to. That's one of those that that we're going to have to add to the list. Why is it called that? What's the theming? And then talk a little bit about the registration process and cost, if you recall.
Speaker 1:So it's in a town of Mystic in connecticut. It's on the shore, um, it's a little bit on the southeastern side of connecticut. We do have a big aquarium there as well. It's called mystic aquarium. They're one of the very few aquariums in the us that has beluga whales fun fact they have a whole like beluga whale experience and penguin experience. I've done the thing when I've done neat yeah, it's really fun.
Speaker 1:And then, um, the race organization is, uh, the hartford marathon foundation. They put on a bunch of different races around the state and they're honestly a really good uh race organization. Races are always well put together. Course support's always great, after party's always fun. It's a nice, solid organization and they're not terribly expensive either. I think I register late, though, to be fair, I don't remember what exactly I paid for it. It's usually under. It's usually around like 75 or so.
Speaker 3:Oh, so we're not talking, disney prices here no. I love it. No On my it, no On my heart and wallet.
Speaker 2:And also the stress level of several devices.
Speaker 3:She hasn't said that yet, oh.
Speaker 2:I'm so sorry.
Speaker 3:Can you talk about the registration process Because, like we alluded to with the Disney registration process, it's a bit of an event.
Speaker 1:That is an understatement. I will say I definitely miss travel agent bids for Disney races.
Speaker 3:Oh wait, they don't do that anymore. No, oh, I didn't know that.
Speaker 2:Charity bibs yes.
Speaker 3:Charity bibs yes. Travel agent bibs no.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, but this is a quick and easy online registration. I think I registered really late, like a couple weeks ago. Nice, okay, usually a fair amount of spots left, but they did sell out, so I'd recommend registering sooner rather than later and it looks like they have a 10k too. Yes, so the 10 and a half start at same time, you have pretty much most of the course together until the 10K splits off to the finish line. Yeah, it's a little bit easier for them for logistics and things like that, which totally makes sense.
Speaker 3:And I would assume they leave the course open until the half marathon finishes.
Speaker 1:Yeah, the half has a three-hour time limit usually.
Speaker 2:Okay, so the half has a three-hour time limit. Usually Okay, so the half has a three-hour time limit. But you can, if you are, say, wounded or injured, you could do the 10K half.
Speaker 3:A little slower.
Speaker 2:And it'll be a little slower, so it's not pricey. Registration sounds like it could be open almost right up until race day, but earlier is better. Earlier is better and less expensive. Yep, and can we talk about the race entry fee? What does that get you? A bib, a shirt, a medal?
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:Standard yes, okay, yeah, I do a medal.
Speaker 1:Yes, standard yes, okay, yeah, I do have a medal right here. Ooh, I have not had a chance to hang it up yet, that's a medal.
Speaker 3:That's actually kind of nice, because you don't always get a medal, even with a race, at that price point. Look at it, that is nice. Yeah, it's nice there's a race organization on it and then if you're looking on the video, I mean you're seeing the metal and it says mystic, what a great. Yeah, that's a nice metal I like, yeah, it's a good size too.
Speaker 1:Yeah, here's beer can for size for scale there you go For scale.
Speaker 2:I love it. I love it. And they had a race shirt, or was it like? Is it a running shirt or is it a cotton shirt?
Speaker 1:It's like a weird tri-blend shirt. It's not quite like a dry fit, but it's not quite a cotton. Okay, it's a t-shirt.
Speaker 3:Yep, okay, I've seen those.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, I got caught up on on the race website, but okay, you like this one, it's your favorite. This is the second time you've done it, and third or fourth.
Speaker 1:Yeah, third, third, now that I think about it.
Speaker 2:Third yeah, If somebody's coming from out of town. I feel like with your travel agent expertise.
Speaker 3:Did we mention that?
Speaker 2:She's a travel agent.
Speaker 3:She is, hence the wishing that they had travel agent bibs. Still, yeah, that makes total sense.
Speaker 2:Right, but what travel tips? If we're going to come for this race weekend, what travel tips do you recommend in terms of getting there?
Speaker 1:It's pretty easy to get to. You fly into either the Hartford Airport, which is the bigger one, or you can fly into the New Haven Airport For you guys, because I'm sure you guys would fly. It's about a three-hour flight from Florida, it's not too bad.
Speaker 3:That's not flight from florida it's not too bad.
Speaker 1:That's not bad, no, it's not too bad. And then I would rent a car because there's a lot of cool places on the shoreline to visit. Yeah, and there's mystic is very much a like a quaint new england town.
Speaker 3:It's just really, it's really pretty to even walk through, run through, drive through, that's nice see, when you say quaint new england town, my child of the 80s brain goes immediately to stephen king novels oh my god, yeah, so so, like I, I'm, I'm damaged, so that, like you, you say that I'm afraid yeah, now I'm thinking like salem's lot now?
Speaker 2:Okay, all right. So you rent a car. You have a quaint little town to explore after you cross the finish line, right, yep, okay so.
Speaker 3:I like that. You said that right from the get go. It's nice to let to let people know hey, you're coming to this race, go ahead and rent a car. Don't do the Uber liftft thing.
Speaker 1:It's too far, I think, from the Hartford airport. It's probably an hour and a half.
Speaker 2:That's what I was going to ask is from the two airports, which is yeah probably about 40 minutes from the New Haven airport, maybe a little longer.
Speaker 3:And that could make a difference in terms of the cost of your your airfare also, depending on what airline you're flying and all that. That makes total sense. Yeah, can you talk a little bit about with this race what is there a race expo? Or and what's the packet pickup experience like?
Speaker 1:there is no expo that's easy. There are a couple options, though. So they have. You can have your packet mailed to you. I think it's for a little extra fee. They do mail you your bib, but you have to pick up the t-shirt at the race.
Speaker 2:Okay.
Speaker 1:Or they have early packet pickup where you can go to one of their locations Usually it's a running store Pick up your shirt and your bib and go back to business and go to race morning.
Speaker 3:Okay, so they partner with a local running store for that? What's that? They partner with a local running store for that, what's that? They partner with a local running store for picking up your bib there sometimes.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I think it changes every year, if I remember correctly.
Speaker 2:Okay did you see people doing race morning packet pickup? Oh, plenty, yeah, okay, all right, good to know, good to know we've done plenty of those let me ask you this as far as travel goes and the the airports you talked about, what about lodging in hotels?
Speaker 1:yeah, there are a lot of smaller like boutique style hotels down there. It's very much it's reminiscent of cape cod area, where it's like there's no high rises. Maybe a couple bigger names, like maybe hilton or marriott nearby, but for the most part it's small, family-owned hotels like a bed and breakfast kind of thing I'm sure there are probably somewhere on there it would be like that kind of mood and if you're going up there for that kind of experience, I think that's the way to go yeah, you know, yeah, yeah, stay local I'm a big.
Speaker 3:We're big fans of supporting local yes, wherever we go.
Speaker 2:Yes, we want to know where to go don't get us wrong, we love hilton.
Speaker 3:They've sponsored episodes of the past. How, when you can do those kind of experiences, those little family-owned spots, bed and breakfast and all that, they're just there's something to be said yes, yeah, for sure, for sure, okay.
Speaker 2:so we've talked about backup pickup, we've talked about a little bit of travel and getting around. Are there, before you go race morning? Are there places where you can carb load get last minute race things like hydration and those kinds of things, that that you might need or you forgot, or?
Speaker 1:Yeah, so there's actually. Right by the starting area there's a they call it all mystic village. It's a lot of different shops, but in an outdoor setting and it includes a running store. So if you need anything, there's one right there.
Speaker 2:Nice.
Speaker 1:Great.
Speaker 2:Great, you can get. Gels. You can get. I don't know, what do you carry with you, emily?
Speaker 1:Depends on the length of the race, but for a half marathon I'll typically carry a handheld water bottle. I use a Neathen, one of those speed draws and then it has a pouch on the outside. I usually carry two or three chocolate outrage goos and then I usually carry a waffle too, just in case I get hungry and I want to chew something yeah, instead of a gel. I also have the orange noon sport tablets that I put in my bottles.
Speaker 3:I know you had me at the waffle and you lost me at the noon. Oh, I love that. Listen, I the screw. Waffles are, I think are the best invention for runners. They're delicious and most of them I've never had one that I can recall Give me gastro problems on a race, but you absolutely need water with them. But noon, oh, I'm just not a fan, unless they want to sponsor us, in which case I love Noon and recommend that. No, I'm kidding.
Speaker 2:It's subtle. Everybody has a different kind of Everybody's different. And also it is based on your experience, because at the Tower of Terror, 10 miler, when there was just I don't know, super humidity, You'd have drank anything they gave you, I would have drank anything they gave me, but when I drank Gatorade, what at about mile four?
Speaker 3:Green Powerade.
Speaker 2:Green Power, whatever it was.
Speaker 3:She can't smell Green Powerade to this day.
Speaker 2:No, yes, thumbs down, thumbs down. I was like, oh, it's not going to be good. At the finish line I'm just saying to you Just get ready now.
Speaker 1:I Just saying to you just get ready now. I don't like Powerade and Gatorade. They're just too heavy and sugary. Yes, Even after I run Disney race, they hand me a bottle of Powerade.
Speaker 2:I have to dump at least a third of it out and put water in it or mix them somehow. It's so sugary.
Speaker 1:Absolutely yeah, that's why I like the Noon because it's not nearly as sugary Subtle and you're still getting electrolytes.
Speaker 3:It's subtle To me, I don't know. Again, to each their own Noon just reminds me of LaCroix, can't do it?
Speaker 2:I'm so sorry.
Speaker 3:She apologizes for me.
Speaker 2:It's a long time campaign against LaCroix.
Speaker 1:I drink all these seltzers and I love all seltzer.
Speaker 2:I love all seltzer. I'm just going to say I emotionally support all seltzers.
Speaker 3:However, I cannot stand LaCroix. Okay, really Come on Again, unless they're going to sponsor the show, in which case LaCroix drink of champions, okay, okay, so you've given us a great tip here with the running store there in the village. What other secret tips could you offer for race morning?
Speaker 1:I think it also goes back to what distance. It is like I prepared differently for 10k versus half marathon or 5k versus a 10k. But I will say I have a couple things that I need. I absolutely need either squirrels, not butter, or the gold bond friction defense. I cannot live without either of those things as floridians we emotionally support this we support this.
Speaker 2:Oh yes, body glide, yep, like the squirrel nut butters.
Speaker 1:Yes, yep, any form of anti-chafe that is absolutely necessary must for any race, doesn't matter no, so you're saying that for any race, not just this race specifically, for some reason?
Speaker 2:because the weather is not, because it's it's may, right, you just had it, so it's like a may half yeah, so it.
Speaker 1:Our mays are kind of weird. Up here we race. Morning I think it was either in the 40s or 50s, but yesterday it was 90. So three days later you have a big swing.
Speaker 3:That sounds like us.
Speaker 2:Yeah, 80, it's 90, it's 20, it's 10. I don't know. Yeah, yeah, who knows, who knows? It doesn't know what it wants to do.
Speaker 1:It is usually humid for that one, though, just because it's on the shore.
Speaker 2:Okay, so you do. It is usually humid for that one, though, just because it's on the shore. Okay, so you have talked about great preparedness. I need to know. I'm gonna talk about the capital h word.
Speaker 1:I'm gonna talk about hills it is a little hilly, I'm not gonna I'll.
Speaker 2:I won't sugarcoat it for you, okay good, you're just going to tell me for the half, only for the half.
Speaker 1:Okay. So I feel better At the 10K split. When the 10K goes off to the right, the half marathon says oh no, because there's a giant hill that you have to go up right after the split and then it gets a little. There are rolling hills after that.
Speaker 3:I'm using air quotes.
Speaker 2:Rolling hills Rolling hills, yeah, rolling hills, like people say it and it sounds really nice. Oh, rolling hills, it's so beautiful.
Speaker 3:I know that our listeners in other parts of the States are like what's the big deal? No big deal. We're in Florida. Our maximum altitude in the city in which we live is 13 feet. It's bad. That's the highest point in the city do you?
Speaker 2:she's obviously trained on hills apparently she, she can do those overpasses with the green army men at Disney races and, oh my God, just yeah, all right, whatever.
Speaker 3:Yeah Off ramps at Disney.
Speaker 2:It's terrible.
Speaker 3:Heartburn. So just so we're clear, I'm so sorry yes.
Speaker 1:Yes, to be fair, though, it's not the incline that kills me, it's the the sideways tilt.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 3:Yes.
Speaker 2:So the rolling hills are they like in this race in the Mystic Half? The rolling hills are they like 90 degree angles? Tell us the truth.
Speaker 1:No, I wouldn't. No, no, no, they're not 90.
Speaker 2:It's not like Kentucky.
Speaker 1:The first one You've done Run the Bluegrass right.
Speaker 3:We've done Run the Bluegrass. That hill is like one of those. The first one is have you done Run the Bluegrass? Right, we've done Run the Bluegrass. That's the one.
Speaker 1:That hill is like one of those, oh my gosh, oh my gosh. Just one, but just one big one, and then after that it's much smaller.
Speaker 3:Which, by the way, we have talked about. Run the Bluegrass on the show. I love it, we loved the course I love it.
Speaker 1:It is beautiful, yes.
Speaker 3:Gorgeous, and that's how they market it, because they're distracting you from how damn hilly that course is.
Speaker 1:It's so pretty and all the baby courses and all that yeah.
Speaker 2:And the chicken house. Yeah, yes. I know.
Speaker 1:I know.
Speaker 2:But would you say that there are ample aid stations on this course at Mystic?
Speaker 1:Oh yeah, they have plenty and the nice thing is on the back of the packer. I think I finished this. One was like 252, something like that and that's back none of the aid stations ran out. None of the food stations at the end, at the finish line, ran out of food.
Speaker 3:They still had plenty left oh, we're gonna get to that in a minute they're always well organized and well courses are well supported.
Speaker 1:oh, I love hearing to that in a minute Airways well-urinized and well courses are well-supported.
Speaker 3:Oh, I love hearing that.
Speaker 2:That's a good thing for back of the boat, because the time limit is three hours and it sounds like you made the most of your race entry fee on the course. Enjoying the course and enjoying the experience to me.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and because you run on the shores, it's really pretty, you do get a sea breeze. You run on the shores, it's really pretty, you do get a sea breeze. You run by the old seaport area. You run by a couple of museums they have down there. It's really a cool scenic area down there Nice. You run through some of the old town greens. It's just a nice race.
Speaker 2:It's a nice way to see the town.
Speaker 1:Yes.
Speaker 2:But I've never finished a half in three hours. So I think I would like can you still see, is it still scenic for the 10k?
Speaker 1:oh yeah, okay, like the, probably the first half is mostly seen as the most scenic. The back half is a little bit more residential, okay that makes sense, easier to shut those roads down.
Speaker 2:Funnel the traffic later and a lot of races, do that yeah, yeah, the two of you know that, don't you? Now, are there highlights on the half that you're like yes, you must take your time and take some photos, is there? It seems like scenery and not maybe entertainment, so to speak.
Speaker 1:They do have a few DJs on the course.
Speaker 2:Oh, djs, there are DJs, a couple, yeah. Oh, are they hired by the race? Yes, or?
Speaker 1:okay, yeah, like the race. I think they posted thanks to DJ. I think it was Darth Vader or something along those lines. Yeah, Thanks for coming, or something. I forget what it was exactly. But, yeah, they do have a couple of DJs on the course.
Speaker 2:Was the DJ in a Darth Vader and a lot of their other races will have bagpipers too, that just show up and play. It was really cool. Oh, I'm so upset that Dana has left the room because you said bagpipers. Yes, you said, and I'm going to have to tell him when he gets back, but he can hear me Apparently, he can hear me. So did they wear kilts and the whole get up and stuff.
Speaker 1:Very formal they weren't. I didn't see any during this race, but they alone. Bagpiper has attended other of the race organization races. Yes.
Speaker 2:Cause we've seen like bagpipers on the course in Alaska and it's just, it's super cool. Have you done Alaska? Have you done Alaska yet Not?
Speaker 1:yet I'm actually going to Alaska next June.
Speaker 3:Oh, you're going to love it. You're going to love it.
Speaker 1:We're going for one of my running buddies' 50th birthdays. We're taking a cruise out there. My husband and I are going to hop off a boat and then we're going to do the Alaska railroad. Oh, that's going to be awesome.
Speaker 3:The Alaska railroad. We've run the. We've done the Anchorage run fest twice on the show.
Speaker 2:Yes.
Speaker 3:And every time we run it, the Alaska railroad goes right past us on the running course. You will love it you are going to absolutely love that, and we're not even in the train.
Speaker 2:No we're just watching it go.
Speaker 3:And actually they that that train passes us as we get by the bagpipers every year.
Speaker 2:It's awesome.
Speaker 3:So you get the train and the bagpipe going and he runs up to see the bagpipers.
Speaker 2:So if you, took a photo she's, they're going in June. You're not doing a race, are you?
Speaker 1:I'll see what fits into our schedule, but it's June next year. Ah, so it's like the mayor's we don't have any race dates yet, so we're not sure.
Speaker 2:The mayor's midnight. There might be a June half in there somewhere. Might be something you can do there. I know I'm way off topic, but just the Anchorage Run Fest is also good.
Speaker 3:We're not meandering, we are taking the road less traveled by.
Speaker 2:We are Bam, and that has made all the difference.
Speaker 3:I brought it back to the beer at the beginning of the episode. Everyone I love it.
Speaker 2:I love it. Do you have tips? Okay, so for the Mystic Half and 10K, do you have tips for any first-timers when, if we should do this race?
Speaker 1:get there early. I'd say at least an hour 10 before the race.
Speaker 2:Okay, time to get start. Why seven?
Speaker 1:yeah, that's early the big question really okay.
Speaker 3:Why do you recommend that?
Speaker 1:the lines to get into the parking lot are absurd oh, parking, parking is an issue plenty of parking. It's just very. You can only get one car at a time. Yeah, oh, it's one way in one way out two, I think, but you can only again.
Speaker 2:It's one car wide, so it makes sense yeah, okay, because I'm gonna tell you down there where. What did we do? The rock and rib run, where we couldn't even get into the parking lot to do the race that one.
Speaker 3:We were over on the east coast of florida and there was a massive thunderstorm and then the traffic backed up onto the interstate and there was a point to get into park. We were still trying to get in after the race start and we just we called it.
Speaker 2:We're like no, we're like we can't do it, we're not gonna finish. We're back in the back people. Yeah, but yeah definitely get there early, early get there early okay, and so get there early so you can park and get your bearings and get everything get ready, whether you're doing the 10K or the half On the course we've talked about that. It's well prepared with aid stations and entertainment bagpipers. Possibly sometime and can you talk about the finish? How's the finish?
Speaker 1:The finish is right in front of the aquarium and the nice thing is, the metals and whatnot are typically themed for some kind of aquatic animal. This year was a seal or sea lion, excuse me, last year was a turtle. I have it hanging up there somewhere. A turtle, yeah, it's really cute. And then I think the year before I did it, or probably pre-COVID, it was an old ship in a bottle. Oh, that's cool yeah.
Speaker 3:A ship in a bottle, it's all nautical themed.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, that's super cool. You cross the finish line, they hand you a bottle of water, they hand you a medal. There's a whole buffet spread.
Speaker 3:I'm sorry, a what?
Speaker 1:A buffet? Yeah, they serve you, but that sort of style Really. Yeah, there's plenty of food which is really nice. There's always bananas. There's a local bakery that does gluten-free granola, which is great for my husband, who has a gluten allergy.
Speaker 2:Nice.
Speaker 1:Yeah, they have plenty of breakfast food. I got a giant plate of eggs, potatoes and sausage. Oh I hate this spot.
Speaker 2:I bet it did it really did.
Speaker 3:Okay, can we all just agree that breakfast hits especially good and different after a big morning race?
Speaker 1:Yes, I agree. And then there's in the shopping area there, the Mystic Village, there's a place called Deviant Donuts.
Speaker 3:Oh hello.
Speaker 2:What Hang on Stand by.
Speaker 3:You're talking to my inner police officer here. What?
Speaker 1:Really Not stereotyping at all?
Speaker 3:Not at all. Hey, listen, there's a reason for some stereotypes. Okay, talk to me about Deviant Donuts here, I'll send you guys a picture oh, please do amy's already on their website. Send us your photo too.
Speaker 1:But you got any recommendations the line was really long I can't imagine why. After a race, good reason they did run out of a lot, but they did have a gluten sensitive donut which warren was able to have. That was great. It was a death by chocolate. If I remember correctly, I had an apple cinnamon jam oh, that sounds amazing oh, it was delightful of course I'm.
Speaker 3:Amy pulls up the the website on her ipad. I just glance over and I see a brioche. They they have a brioche donut and then one of the flavors they offer is tiramisu.
Speaker 2:Yes, let's go. Let's go and have tiramisu. You had the apple cinnamon fritter, which is apple jam fritter topped with a cinnamon glaze, and then the tiramisu says brioche filled with mascarpone mousse, topped with espresso glaze and dusted with cocoa powder. That sounds awful.
Speaker 3:Who would want that after running 13 miles?
Speaker 2:Can you just Not the cop? No, can you? There's something called a cup of dirt.
Speaker 3:The cops aren't running 13 miles. I promise you they're going to use the radio instead.
Speaker 2:Cinnamon toast crunch. People dreams come true, this looks amazing.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh what a great god. There's a secret here there's a samoa okay, like girl scout cookies is this bad? No, it's not bad, but I see nothing wrong with this.
Speaker 1:You just did a 10k or a half marathon. I see nothing wrong, absolutely.
Speaker 2:Covered in caramel glaze toasted coconut.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh that sounds incredible, and there's hummingbird cake and it's a vegan offering. Okay, this is nice. They have gluten sensitive and they have vegan offerings as well. And for the carnivore, they do have a maple bacon.
Speaker 1:They have drinks too, if you want to. I'm sorry, what?
Speaker 3:They have drinks.
Speaker 1:Yep, I sent Amy a picture of the menu.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh, she's on the website. She's all over it right now, sorry.
Speaker 2:I'm sorry, there's a black velvet there. I'm sorry there's a black velvet. There's a New Orleans cold brew oh, seasonal, there's a snickerdoodle, that's we've got to have For coffee.
Speaker 3:These are coffee drinks, oh yes. No, that's amazing, though, Because again, we don't just talk about alcoholic beverages on the show.
Speaker 1:Give me non-alcoholic. They don't have any beer after the race, so we just went and grabbed a drink at the donut shop.
Speaker 3:Oh my goodness. Now if they were smart, they would do something with a protein powder donut or something what Like. They would incorporate protein powder into the recipe. Or day of the race, yeah, day of the race that would be the thing to do. Do something like one of their specialty donuts, but incorporate collagen into it. Like runner's donut or something like that Exactly and it has like 20 grams of protein and like 10,000 calories. Tm.
Speaker 2:TM, let's reach out and see if we can be deviant with the donuts. No, oh my gosh, this is awesome. This is awesome, is there? Okay? So post-race, there are breakfast options. That just hit the spot. Okay, we got that. Yeah, right, are there other places where you're going to explore and indulge that you should go to celebrate your victory crossing the finish line.
Speaker 1:There are plenty around that area. Again, there are not really any chains down there, it's more just like local stuff.
Speaker 3:Perfect, there's plenty to get whatever you want do you have any recommendations you could share with the run case nation here? For let's start with food, let's start with food.
Speaker 1:Oh, okay, all right, I had to consult the people maps for this one okay, this is definitely great.
Speaker 2:I love it because it's something you can't get everywhere.
Speaker 3:That's just it. We occasionally will talk about chains here on the show, because there are some chains that are that do a great job that are worthy and that are absolutely something you should patronize.
Speaker 3:That said, if we can find a regional, something unique, a mom and pop or a regional chain, we try to feature that as much as we can, because when you're traveling, I can if I can get a chain restaurant here in Florida. The appeal of a chain is that theoretically it's the same and consistent no matter where you go. True, I don't want that. When I'm traveling, I want the things that the locals are pursuing.
Speaker 2:After the race you don't want to go into the race with anything questionable.
Speaker 3:No, no, I'm not going to go find the New England clam chowder before a race After.
Speaker 1:It's after After. That's where it's at, definitely after. Yes, especially on a cold day, it's a nice kind of warm. You back up. There's a bunch of restaurants in the old Missing Village. There's a pizza place called Mango's Woodfire Pizza. There's the Jealous Monk, which is an American tavern style. There's Skate Loft. There's a bunch of different places, something, everything.
Speaker 3:Any places that you've gone that you would recommend.
Speaker 1:The Jealous Monk's a good one. I've been there.
Speaker 3:The Jealous Monk.
Speaker 2:It's called the Jealous Monk.
Speaker 3:Amy's, again Amy's. All over their website Like show me.
Speaker 2:Yes, it's a social hall and beer garden.
Speaker 3:Those crazy monks.
Speaker 2:Oh my God, there's an ice cream sundae bar. Yeah, there's plenty of stuff. What? Yep, I'm sorry, and there's a pretzel.
Speaker 3:There's a pretzel and literally the first thing you pull up is clam chowder.
Speaker 2:I just want the griddled cornbread drizzled with honey, topped with whipped butter and sprinkled with love or confectionary sugar. Oh, my goodness.
Speaker 3:I'm sure it's good, but my Southern roots are like what do you folks up there know about cornbread? Come on now.
Speaker 1:Some Southerners move up here.
Speaker 3:True, true.
Speaker 2:This looks good.
Speaker 3:Yeah, we're going to link to them in the show notes because this looks incredible.
Speaker 1:And the nice thing is too is where you park is right there, so you don't have to get back in your car, get somewhere else.
Speaker 3:That is really nice.
Speaker 2:You can walk around and enjoy a good meal afterwards. Yes, listen, there's Jealous Monk Pilsner. Okay, I see a Two Roads offering on the menu.
Speaker 3:Two Con. Yes, listen, there's Jealous Monk Pilsner. Okay, I see a Two Roads offering on the menu.
Speaker 2:Two Con Golden Ale.
Speaker 1:So that was a collaboration that they did with the University of Connecticut UConn, Really.
Speaker 3:Yeah, they have a Brewer's Guild up at UConn. I don't understand what college and beer have to do with one another. Oh really, that's just so strange Like why would those two compare, team up? I don't get it.
Speaker 1:no, and yukon's a big. They have a really big goag agriculture program up there too do they really?
Speaker 3:oh, I would not have thought that it's so.
Speaker 1:Yukon is up in the northeastern corner of connecticut and there's a lot of farms around nearby. Yukon has their own dairy bar for ice cream, which is amazing, seriously.
Speaker 3:Yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, no, it's really great. Honestly, I didn't go to Yukon. I went to another school that played against Yukon, but I will say that dairy bar is delightful.
Speaker 2:Okay, we're not going to root against anybody, huh no we're going to root for Florida teams. But I say, you see as much and do as much as when you take a runcation, you should explore and indulge.
Speaker 3:Oh listen, I'm going to be in Boston for three weeks. I'm going to come back with Boston University attire.
Speaker 2:Are you going to come back with it just for you, or are you going to bring some for? The rest of the Runcation Nation.
Speaker 3:Not for the rest of the Runcation.
Speaker 2:Nation, or maybe your co-host at the very least she plays her cards right?
Speaker 3:Okay, you're recommending this place to us.
Speaker 2:I enjoy this. Look at Jealous Mung. Oh my God.
Speaker 3:We haven't even been and we're loving the menu. This looks great. Are there any other places that you would? Say absolutely check out.
Speaker 1:Those are my big two, especially like it hits differently after a race.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, those are my big two, and it just depends on how you feel too, that too yeah. Yeah, like you said, steak loft right.
Speaker 1:Oh, the engine room. That's another good one, oh the engine room.
Speaker 3:Wait, what do they have? What is?
Speaker 2:that Well, let's find out. Let's find out Engine room.
Speaker 3:We're going to edit some of this, so it'll seem like we had it right Immediately.
Speaker 2:We will edit.
Speaker 3:We sure.
Speaker 2:The Royal. We had it right immediately. We will edit, we Sure the royal. We will edit the royal, we Okay, engine room Now we're on the website here.
Speaker 3:Well okay, beer, burgers and bourbon. Sign me up. Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2:What I need a menu. See the menu. See the menu. Here we go. Here we go Lunch and dinner.
Speaker 3:Lunch, and here we go lunch and dinner, lunch and dinner. Okay, there's poutine, okay, there's poutine.
Speaker 2:And there's something called cowboy dip, candied jalapeno and cream cheese dip. House made warm tortilla chips.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh yeah, I'm sure that's awful there's a beef.
Speaker 2:There's beef carpaccio. There's muscles, because you gotta have seafood when you're by the shore, don't you?
Speaker 3:Honestly, a lot of people.
Speaker 1:True.
Speaker 3:You know, up there people are probably thinking lobster. I think that's the default that people are thinking for New England, I want to find this mystic pizza.
Speaker 2:Does it exist? Anyway, that's just my 80s child, inner child, whatever. Did you know that there are carolina hush puppies at this place? I, at the engine room there's. Have you had the carolina hush puppies? Listen, fried cornmeal with miso maple butter and there's a Twix chocolate milkshake.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2:I'm so sorry, I just yeah, scallops, I think we found Amy's next one, Cajun. Yes, emily is planning it for us.
Speaker 3:You did good, emily. Yes, this is ridiculous. I'm looking at the menu and I'm like, okay, this is fantastic the thing. Looking at the menu and I'm like, okay, the thing that they feature oh what, I bet you they have a brunch menu the engine room has a Sunday brunch menu.
Speaker 2:Oh my god, let's go there. There's a pitcher of mimosas.
Speaker 3:You're talking Amy language here.
Speaker 2:Oh, and there's a classic Bloody Mary. Darlene would love that that's me too.
Speaker 3:I I'm a bloody mary over mimosa person all the time there's also something called a hangover cure.
Speaker 2:Emily, just vodka, old bay rum kelly would be happy. Old bay rim, not rum, oh dang it.
Speaker 1:Yeah, they put the seasoning like they would for a salt on the margarita.
Speaker 2:It's a rim Okay House Bloody Mary mix yeah, bacon, olives, lemon, lime pickles, cherry pepper and cheddar cheese.
Speaker 1:Come on, it sounds like it's a Bloody Mary, but elevated yeah.
Speaker 2:Yeah, steak and eggs, chicken and waffles.
Speaker 3:Bagel and lox.
Speaker 2:Oh Shakshuka too. Oh bananas, foster French toast, Emily, Look at this.
Speaker 1:Yes, well, you need your banana after a race, right, you do?
Speaker 3:And really you could either eat it where it's underripe and in line as you're walking out of the race, or you could have it on top of brulee french toast, come on it's a delivery vehicle, that's all.
Speaker 1:It is delivery vehicle, it's a delivery vehicle for your potassium yes, or, if you like me, I save it and I give it to my buddies especially when they're underripe.
Speaker 2:I hate underripe bananas did you see where there's lemon and blueberry fritters too? Fried lemon and blueberry fritters tossed in in sugar and vanilla icing?
Speaker 3:you have done so well in pointing the runcation nation towards these locations. Thank you, old bay.
Speaker 2:Macaroni salad emily. This is incredible or not.
Speaker 1:Southerners old Bay is more of a Maryland thing, right?
Speaker 3:It is, although Old Bay hot sauce has finally made its way down here.
Speaker 2:It has and Old Bay vodka.
Speaker 3:Within the last year.
Speaker 2:I don't know I got distracted. I'm so sorry.
Speaker 3:Okay, so for the runcationer who shows up they come, they do the race, they eat at these amazing places. They grab some drinks, they get maybe some to-go donuts, some road donuts, some road nuts, as you might call them. Are there any other must-see areas within this destination area for people who might be making this a runcation destination for them?
Speaker 1:Yeah. So a couple of exits down 95, there's a really cool bookstore called the book barn. It's an old used bookstore and if you are, if you've never been, it's honestly one of my favorite places in Connecticut, cause, if you haven't guessed how many books I have in my office, I have a lot.
Speaker 3:As evidenced by the one shelf behind you, but I bet you there's more off camera.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, oh yeah, there's a lot going on there too.
Speaker 1:My last Goodreads update. For all my books I think I have over 600 now. Wow, I don't keep up. Yeah, I'm a bookworm, but anyway, that's probably one of my favorite places to go because it's not only just like a bookstore, it's a used bookstore, so they're super cheap, and then they also have goats there that you can feed and pet. They have cute little cats and they have little games for kids. It's something for everybody, which is really nice. It's a nice little spot and it's in Niantic, connecticut, so a little bit further down, a little bit further west of Mystic, but it's also it's similar to Mystic, where it's a nice quaint New England town. There's a nice downtown area, there's a nice boardwalk on the beach, there's a small beach area you can take your book.
Speaker 3:go buy your book walk down to the beach and see, of course in my mind I'm immediately like quaint new england town and little bookstore and I'm like needful things, that's what I'm thinking. All of us have different experiences I know, I'm just I was damaged by stephen king in the 80s.
Speaker 2:I'm sorry, it's okay, it's okay, it's so. The book barn, and then we have all these different places to explore and indulge. Emily, my question is where are you accomplishing, exploring and indulging next?
Speaker 1:That's an excellent question. I am actually leaving tomorrow and getting on a Disney cruise with my mom, so taking her on a belated Mother's Day and birthday's on Monday, so we get to do like a joint Mother's Day and my birthday cruise together. We're leaving our husbands and pets at home. Sorry, a girl's trip. Yeah, a girl's trip. And then I'm going to do the Castaway 5K again on Saturday.
Speaker 1:And I'll just enjoy the cruise You've done the Castaway 5K, not the official one, just the one where you just go to the Castaway and you treat yourself. They do give you a medal for free.
Speaker 2:And you would recommend that yeah it's fun, it's hot All the downside is hot.
Speaker 3:I was going going to say, if you're heading down towards our latitude right now, which you would be, you're kind of in the same latitude. It's a little warm I woke up this morning, I walked out. It was like being hit with a wet blanket and it was like 87 degrees at 5 am welcome to florida summer yeah, I lived in Florida.
Speaker 1:I'm good. Yeah, I'm good. It was around 90 here yesterday and we had some thunderstorms rolling this morning.
Speaker 3:Oh my gosh, that's rough.
Speaker 2:We'll all make it through the summer together.
Speaker 3:I'll take it as long as we don't get any more name storms.
Speaker 1:We'll just focus on getting better from our injuries and running training to look forward to the fall Exactly and the start of yeah.
Speaker 3:So, emily, we cannot thank you enough for coming on today and talking with us about this race and some of these amazing places, and we're going to have links to all of these locations in the show notes, so worry not, runcation Nation, everything we've talked about. Click the links, check them out, emily. Where can people connect with you and the Runcation Nation? And whether that's your personal account or your business account and I know that we talked a little bit If you're looking at maybe booking a Runcation, emily is a travel agent. She might be able to help you. She knows a thing or two about running, eating, drinking and traveling.
Speaker 1:Yay, tell us where we can connect. Oh sorry, yeah, you can find me on Instagram my running slash normal Instagram, mostly now pet photos.
Speaker 3:Nothing wrong with that.
Speaker 1:Nope, everybody likes pet photos. I love it, hey, why not?
Speaker 3:It's ecofit13, e I T one, three.
Speaker 2:Oh, there's one of my bunny, and then my business Instagram is Emily, oh, e M I L Y oh, of course, of course.
Speaker 3:Connect with Emily. Enjoy talking about these places. Maybe going to run this race and check out these amazing locations.
Speaker 1:And I'll meet you for a beer. Excellent, oh we would love it Either way.
Speaker 3:Emily thank you Coffee, exactly A donut. A donut you to be alcohol. Emily, thank you Coffee, exactly A donut.
