RUN WITH MEB!  Benefiting the MEB Foundation

It is true; we just completed a fun race weekend with the Runcation Nation at the Gasparilla Distance Classic in Tampa, but we have to talk about Dana’s hometown for one more week on the show because this week, we are lucky enough to chat with Meb Keflezighi about his inaugural race coming up in May, the Run with Meb!  Benefiting the MEB Foundation.  This event features a 1-mile, 5K, and 10K offering, both in-person in Tampa and Virtual.  Meb told us all about it.  Thank you, Meb, for putting it together and taking the time to talk with us about this first annual event.  We can’t wait to run it with you.  Or, more accurately, at the back of your pack in Al Lopez Park in May!  Save us a high five at the finish!

EAT & DRINK

Wood Fired is a pizza and wine bar near the University of South Florida in Tampa.  It is a small and quaint place that is huge in flavor!  We had salads, appetizers, and pizza that were so flavorful!  We recommend this place if you are scouting colleges or heading to Busch Gardens in Tampa.   In addition, there are local craft beers on tap and a wide range of wines on the menu, from less expensive to higher-end choices.  We went with a glass of house wine, and it was delicious.

In this special edition of our show, we talk with a legend in the running community, Boston Marathon Race Director Dave McGillivray. It was an honor and privilege to have him back on the show.

From his storied run across the US in 1978 to benefit the Jimmy Fund to his time as Boston Marathon Race Director since the 1980s, he has found a way to marry running with supporting those in need. We loved his book, The Last Pick: The Boston Marathon Race Director’s Road to Success, and now he has donated that and a few others to our auction, benefitting The Donna Foundation in its mission to finish breast cancer.

This week, he discusses what inspires him to give back through running. We can’t thank him enough for his inspirational stories and words of encouragement. We are grateful for the donations of his autographed books to our online auction for The Donna Foundation.

We participated in the 44th Annual Thanksgiving Fort Myers Turkey Trot 5K on our Thanksgiving holiday.  It is hosted at the beautiful Edison Ford Winter Estates.  We celebrated with our local running community and even some members of the Runcation Nation.  It is a lovely course with an excellent atmosphere for the after-party.

Run this race if you are ever in our neck of the woods and want to see a beautiful view from a bridge over the stunning blue water.  The bridge we run over is typically not closed to traffic, and it was so nice to run over it and see that water and the fantastic view of Fort Myers and Cape Coral.

This week, we talked with Runcation Nation member Chris Darling.  He recaps an excellent race weekend that has been on our bucket list for years now, and we are targeting 2024 to run this one after hearing how amazing it is from him.  It is the Bird-In-Hand Half Marathon Weekend in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  

Chris gives excellent travel tips and breaks down the weather (ring that bell!), packet pick-up, the evening 5K, and the half marathon of the weekend.  He offers tips for making it a true “runcation” after the running and lets us know about places to explore, indulge, and celebrate your accomplishment in more ways than eating and drinking the local fare.
