Saying Yes to a New Way: Education, Courage, and the Power of Saying Yes with Jennifer Lazarus

Two years ago, I met Jennifer Lazarus without knowing the dream that was quietly forming in her heart. Today, she is the founder of Heart Expressions Micro School, a holistic, passion-based learning environment designed to integrate mind, body, and soul into academics. What started as a silent prayer, a whisper to the universe, has become a thriving space where children learn not just subjects, but how to regulate emotions, resolve conflict with respect, and engage with the world through curiosity and wonder.

Jennifer’s journey didn’t begin with certainty. She was a speech-language pathologist in the school system, seeing firsthand the cracks in traditional education. She knew there had to be another way. And here’s the thing about courage—it rarely starts with knowing exactly how things will unfold. It starts with a willingness to ask the question, “What if?” What if school could be different? What if children could learn in an environment where emotional intelligence, nature immersion, and passion-based learning were just as important as reading and math? What if we didn’t force kids into one career path but instead encouraged lifelong curiosity and multiple passions?

Jennifer is living proof that we don’t have to follow the set blueprint. She didn’t have a teaching degree. She didn’t have a clear roadmap. What she had was a willingness to say yes to the next step—to follow the breadcrumbs. And isn’t that what courage looks like? Not waiting until we have all the answers, but taking the next best step, trusting that clarity will come through action.
