My conversation with Kim Johnson was nothing short of transformative. Kim and her husband, Jed, didn’t just see a need—they felt it in their bones. They didn’t wait for the perfect plan, the guaranteed roadmap, or the safety of certainty. They said yes to something bigger than themselves and built Wide Awake International, an organization bringing dignity, love, and hope to boys and men with disabilities in Ukraine.
Their story is a powerful reminder that courage isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about taking the next step, even when the path is unclear. From fostering children in Oregon to uprooting their lives and moving across the world, Kim and Jed have committed themselves to breaking cycles of neglect and institutionalization. They refuse to accept that "this is just the way it is." Instead, they’re rewriting the narrative—one life, one home, and one act of love at a time. Because once you know, you can’t unknow. And once you feel the weight of a need, you have a choice: look away or step in.
