Breaking the Silence: The Reality of Mental Health and Parenthood

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, but in our home, mental health isn’t just a month—it’s a daily conversation, a lived experience, a journey that has shaped us in ways we never expected. It’s easy to talk about mental health in the abstract, but what happens when it enters your home? When it touches your children? When it shakes the very foundation of what you thought parenting would be? These are the conversations we need to have—the real, raw, uncomfortable ones that break down stigma and create space for healing. Because the truth is, mental health is not just something that happens to “other people.” It’s here. It’s in our homes, in our families, in our children, and it’s time we stop pretending otherwise.

I’ve had my own experiences with mental health struggles, moments where I felt lost in darkness, moments where I didn’t know how to move forward. But nothing prepared me for the pain of watching my own children battle through it. The helplessness. The fear. The overwhelming need to fix something that I couldn’t fix. But here’s what I’ve learned: Our job isn’t to fix—it’s to stand beside them, to guide them, to remind them of their own strength when they’ve forgotten. To create an environment where they know, without a doubt, that they are not alone. Mental health is a journey, not a destination, and every single step forward matters. If you’re in it right now, know this—you are not failing. You are not alone. And there is hope, even on the hardest days.
