Teaching Money: The Courage to Do It Differently

Talking about money with our kids isn’t always easy—but it’s necessary. In fact, it’s one of the most impactful conversations we can have, and yet it’s the one most often avoided. If our kids don’t learn about money in the safety of our homes, they’ll learn it in the noise of culture—where more is always better, and worth is measured by labels, spending, or access. That’s not the legacy I want to leave. I’ve taught my kids through real-life examples—showing them where the money comes from, where it goes, and how intentional choices create freedom. Sometimes I did it well. Sometimes I fell short. But the one thing I’ve always come back to is this: I’m not here to hand my kids a golden platter. I’m here to teach them how to use their own two hands and hearts to build something meaningful—on their own terms.
Every child’s money story is going to be different, and that’s the beauty of it. Their financial fingerprint is just as unique as their soul. But our responsibility as parents is to open the door to those conversations. Not to shame, not to control—but to guide. To model what it looks like to earn, to save, to spend with intention. Whether it’s $20 a week saved at 16, or splitting the cost of a car, or learning to say “no” to a $10 bagel habit—these are the moments that shape not just spending habits, but character. What I’ve realized through raising six kids is this: our job isn’t to remove every obstacle. Our job is to give them tools, values, and the freedom to change their minds later. Because freedom—true freedom—isn’t just about money. It’s about having choices.
