Breaking Cycles: Courage, Care, and the Call to Act

This month on The Courage Coalition, we’re going where it counts — deep into the heart of foster care and mental health awareness. These two often-siloed topics are more connected than most people realize. As a former foster parent for 13 years and a fierce advocate for those aging out of the system, I’ve seen firsthand the cracks too many of our young adults fall through. When the system ends — often at age 18 — so does their access to housing, support, and healthcare. The heartbreaking result? Thousands face homelessness, addiction, unemployment, or worse. And we’re not talking about it enough.
In this episode, I share why aging out doesn’t mean readiness, why mental health isn’t a personal failure, and why we must stop pretending silence equals strength. I break down the stats, yes — but I also speak from lived experience, from the grit of parenting through brokenness, and from the fierce hope that we can do better. These kids are not throwaways. They are survivors. And they deserve more than systems—they deserve people who see them.
So I’ll ask you what I ask myself: Would you do it for one? Because one story shared, one conversation opened, one support system offered—it matters. Maybe you can’t fix everything, but you can be someone’s turning point. Let’s stop waiting for perfect solutions and start showing up where it’s needed most. Tune in, lean in, and let’s walk this out together.
