This month, I had the incredible honor of sitting down with my son, Koby, to have a raw, powerful, and deeply personal conversation about mental health. As part of our Courage Coalition podcast series for Mental Health Awareness Month, we talked about what it’s like to grow up with anxiety and depression, how it felt as a young man struggling with invisible battles, and how hard it can be to ask for help when you’re not even sure what you need. Koby's vulnerability, wisdom, and lived experience were a reminder that courage doesn’t always look like action—it often starts with honesty. This is a very explicit conversation that may not be for little ears.
One of the most moving parts of our conversation was when Koby shared about his journey with self-harm and the moment everything shifted—when he became a father. He said something I’ll never forget: “This is not who my daughter needs.” That moment was his why. And it reminded me that so often, our greatest healing comes not from fixing everything, but from finding the one reason to keep going. We also unpacked the truth that mental health isn't one-size-fits-all—medication may help, or it may not. Therapy might click, or it might not. The path to healing is personal, and it’s about stacking tools, listening to your body, and staying curious.
If you take nothing else from this, take this: courage is taking the first step. Whether you're the one struggling, or the one watching someone you love struggle, your presence, your questions, and your compassion matter more than you know. And sometimes, the most life-saving words are simply, “I see you. I hear you. I’m here.” You don’t have to do it alone—and you’re not supposed to.
