ADHD, Brain Trauma & Courage: What We’re Not Talking About Enough with guest Shaye Woodward

Corree Roofener Season 2 Episode 45

When I invited Shaye Woodward to the Courage Coalition podcast, I knew the conversation would be rich—but I wasn’t prepared for just how layered, personal, and powerful it would be. Shay is a master certified coach who specializes in ADHD and relationships, but more than that—she’s a woman who has lived what she teaches. Diagnosed in adulthood, she’s navigated ADHD as a mother, a professional, and someone recovering from a traumatic brain injury. This conversation opened up a space we don’t often explore: what happens when ADHD and brain trauma intersect, and how invisible those struggles can be.

We talked about the weight of being misunderstood—how easily someone can be written off because they “look fine,” and the internal fight that happens when your brain no longer functions the way it used to. Shaye shared how her mild concussion 10x’d her ADHD symptoms, altering her sensory processing, memory, and daily function. That alone is a wake-up call for how we treat concussions and neurodiversity—not as something to "fix" or dismiss, but as something we adapt to with tools, compassion, and community. She also broke down how crucial it is to give our kids and ourselves the right tools—not just medication, but support systems, education, and a safe space to be seen without shame.

What stood out most was this simple, grounding truth: ADHD is not who you are. It’s something you experience. And how we respond—how we support each other through the noise, the misunderstanding, the overwhelm—is what creates real change. Whether you're a parent trying to advocate for your child at school, or an adult still trying to understand how your brain works, let this be your reminder: you’re not broken. You’re not alone. And you get to write the story of how you live with what you've been given.

This is the power of conversation. This is the courage to walk through what scares us. And if even one person listens and feels a little more seen, a little more understood—that’s exactly why we keep showing up.
