The Question We Don’t Ask Enough: What Does Success Actually Look Like for You?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
One of the questions I’ve been sitting with lately is this: where did you actually learn how to be a business owner? For many of us, the honest answer is we didn’t. We inherited beliefs, borrowed strategies, followed formulas, and tried to fit ourselves into a very narrow box of what success is “supposed” to look like. In American culture especially, success is often measured by numbers alone revenue, clients, growth curves without ever asking how that business fits into our actual life. Our family. Our health. Our joy. Our capacity. What I’ve learned in building my business is that numbers matter, but they are not the whole story. They don’t tell us who we are, why we’re doing this, or whether the life we’re building actually feels aligned and full.
About three years into my own business journey, I hit a wall. I was doing all the “right” things niching down, following the formulas, investing in education yet I still wasn’t earning in a way that supported my core values. And that forced a deeper reckoning: was I building a business that reflected me, or was I living someone else’s version of success? What shifted everything wasn’t a new strategy it was clarity. Clarity around my why. Clarity around the kind of life I wanted to support. And clarity around the truth that if I wasn’t willing to pivot, to loosen my grip on how things were “supposed” to look, the business would never work not because I wasn’t capable, but because it wasn’t honest.
12 months ago, I made a decision that changed everything: I stopped trying to be marketable and started being myself. Fully. Multifaceted. Relational. Values-driven. I let go of the belief that there was only one way to grow, and I focused instead on connection real conversations, real alignment, real service. And the result? Growth that actually felt sustainable. Clients who didn’t just hire me for my skills, but trusted me because they felt seen. So here’s my question for you as we step into a new year: who have you forgotten in your pursuit of success? And what might be possible if you let go of one grip, one borrowed belief, one rigid rule and chose to build in a way that reflects who you truly are? Because when we show up aligned, courage has a way of doing the rest.
