Bible 365
For over 30 years I’ve talked with men and women who deeply love God, but struggle to understand the Bible. Some believe that unless you are a Theologian, Pastor, or Christian leader, you really can’t understand it. But this is just not true. I’ve launched this simple podcast to help everyday men and women fall in love with the Word of God. Each day I’ll read a portion of Scriptures from the Old and New Testament, covering the entire Bible in one year. After I’ll give a brief devotional. Welcome to day 186 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Randy Gudo and today we're going to be reading through 1 Chronicles chapter 1 and chapter 2 verses 1 through 17, Acts chapter 23, verses 11 through 35, Psalm chapter 3, and Proverbs chapter 18 verses 14 and 15. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. 1 Chronicles chapter 1. Adam, Seth, Enosh, Kenan, Mahalalel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah, Lamak, Noah. The sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. The sons of Japheth, Gomer, Magog, Medai, Javan, Tubal, Meshach, and Tirus. The sons of Gomer, Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarma, and the sons of Javan, Elisha, Tarshish, the Kitites, and the Rodonites, the sons of Ham, Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. The sons of Cush, Sebah, Havilah, Sabtah, Rahimah, and Sabtica. The sons of Rahamah, Sheba and Dedan. Cush was the father of Nimrod, who began to be a mighty one on the earth. Mizraim was the father of the Ludites, the Anamites, the Lehabites, the Naphtuthites, the Pathusites, the Kashluhites, from whom the Philistines came, and the Kafterites. And Canaan was the father of Sidon his firstborn, and of the Hittites, the Jebusites, the Amorites, the Gergeshites, the Hivites, the Archites, the Sinites, the Arvidites, the Zimerites, and the Hamathites. The sons of Shem, Elam, Asher, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. The sons of Aram, Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshach. Arfaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber. Two sons were born to Eber. One was named Peleg, because in his days the earth was divided, and his brother was named Joktan. And Jochtan was the father of Almadad, Shelef, Hazar Maveth, Jirah, Hadoram, Uzal, Dikla, Obal, Abimiel, Sheba, Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were sons of Joktan. So from Shem came Arphaxad, Shelah, Eber, Peleg, Ru, Sirog, Nahor, Terah, and Abram, that is, Abraham. The sons of Abraham were Isaac and Ishmael. These are their genealogies. Nabaoth, the firstborn of Ishmael, then Keter, Abdiel, Mibsam, Mishma, Duma, Masah, Hadad, Tima, Jeder, Nafish, and Kedamah. These were the sons of Ishmael. The sons born to Keturah, Abraham's concubine, Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shua. The sons of Jokshan, Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Midian, Epha, Efer, Hanak, Abidah, and Eldeah. All these were Katurah's sons. Abraham was the father of Isaac, the sons of Isaac, Esau and Israel. The sons of Esau, Eliphaz, Ruel, Jaush, Jalam, and Korah, the sons of Eliphaz, Timon, Omar, Zepho, Gadam, and Kenaz, and by Temnah, Amalek, the sons of Ruel, Nahath, Zirah, Shamah, and Mizza, the sons of Sir, Lotan, Shobel, Zibion, Ana, Dishon, Ezir, and Dishan. The sons of Dishon, Himdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Keran. The sons of Ezar, Bilhan, Zaavan, and Achan, the sons of Dishan, Uz and Aaron. These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the Israelites. Bela, son of Beor, his city was named Dinhaba. When Belah died, Jobab, son of Zerah from Basrah, reigned in his place. When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. When Husham died, Hadad, son of Bedad, who defeated Midian and the country of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avat. When Hadad died, Samlah from Masreka reigned in his place. When Samlah died, Shaal from Rehaboth on the Euphrates reigned in his place. When Shaw died, Belhan, son of Akbor, reigned in his place. When Baalhan died, Hadad reigned in his place. His city was named Peyu, and his wife's name was Mehetabel, daughter of Matrid, the daughter of Mizahab. Then Hadad died. Now the chiefs of Edom were Timna, Alvah, Jeth, Aholabamah, Elah, Pinan, Kenaz, Temon, Mibzar, Magdiel, and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom. These were the sons of Israel, Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan, Joseph, Benjamin, Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. The sons of Judah, Ur, Onan, and Shelah. These three were born to him by Bathshua the Canaanite. Ur, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord put him to death. Tamar, Judah's daughter-in-law, bore to him Perez and Zerah. Judah had five sons in all, the sons of Pirah, Hezron and Hamul, the sons of Zerah, Zimri, Ethan, Heman, Kalkol, and Derah, five in all. The sons of Karmai, Akar, who brought trouble upon Israel by violating the ban on devoted things. The son of Ethan, Azariah, the sons who were born to Hezron, Jeromiel, Ram, and Caleb. Ram was the father of Amenadab, and Amenadab was the father of Nashon, a leader of the descendants of Judah. Nashan was the father of Salmon, and Salmon was the father of Boaz. Abinadab was born second, Shemiah third, Nathanael fourth, Radai fifth, Ozim sixth, and David seventh. Their sisters were Zaraiah and Abigail, and the three sons of Zaraiah were Abishai, Joab, and Asahel. Abigail was the mother of Amesah, whose father was Jether the Ishmaelite. Acts 23, verses 11 through 35. The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, Take courage, as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so also you must testify in Rome. When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. More than forty of them were involved in this plot. They went to the chief priest and elders and said, We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul. Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petitioned the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way. But when the son of Paul's sister heard about the plot, he went into the barracks and told Paul. Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, Take this young man to the commander, he has something to tell him. So the centurion took him to the commander and said, Paul the prisoner sent and asked me to bring this young man to you, he has something to tell you. The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside, and asked, What do you need to tell me? He answered, The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul to the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of acquiring more information about him. Do not let them persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to ambush him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him. They are ready now, awaiting your consent. So the commander dismissed the young man and instructed him, Do not tell anyone that you have reported this to me. Then he called two of his centurions and said, Prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea in the third hour of the night. Provide mounts for Paul to take him safely to Governor Felix. And he wrote the following letter. Claudius Lysius, to his Excellency, Governor Felix, greetings. This man was seized by the Jews, and they were about to kill him when I came with my troops to rescue him, for I had learned that he is a Roman citizen, and since I wanted to understand their charges against him, I brought him down to their Sanhedrin. I found that the accusation involved questions about their own law, but there was no charge worthy of death or imprisonment. When I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also instructed his accusers to present their case against him before you. So the soldiers followed their orders and brought Paul by night to Antipatris. The next day they returned to the barracks and let the horsemen go on with him. When the horsemen arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and presented Paul to him. The governor read the letter and asked what province Paul was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia, he said, I will hear your case when your accusers arrive. Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod's praetorium. Psalm chapter 3. O Lord, how my foes have increased, how many rise up against me. Many say of me, God will not deliver him, Selah. But you, O Lord, are a shield around me, my glory and the one who lifts my head. To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy mountain, Selah. I lie down and sleep, I wake again, for the Lord sustains me. I will not fear the myriads set against me on every side. Arise, O Lord, save me, O my God, strike all my enemies on the jaw, break the teeth of the wicked. Salvation belongs to the Lord. May your blessings be on your people. Selah. Proverbs eighteen, verses fourteen and fifteen. The spirit of a man can endure his sickness, but who can survive a broken spirit? The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge, and the ear of the wise seeks it out. Today's devotional is coming from first Chronicles chapter two, verse four. It says, Tamar, Judah's daughter-in-law, bore to him Piraz and Zirah. Now, I don't know if you realize what we just said right here. Tamar, Judah's daughter-in-law, bore to him Piraz and Zirah. So if you remember the story, Tamar was Judah's daughter-in-law. She was married to his son, who was so evil that God put his son to death. And then Judah lies to Tamar and promises her that she's going to have his youngest son. Well, he never did it. So Tamar dresses up like a prostitute, covers her face. Judah actually sleeps with her. His daughter-in-law gets her pregnant. When he finds out that Tamar was pregnant, he was going to have her killed, and she sends some items to him that he owned, so he realized he was the father. And did you know that Jesus, his lineage as the Son of Man comes right through Tamar? Did you know that? I'm saying this today because I want to encourage some of you, or many of you, who may look over your life and think, I've made some really poor decisions in my life. Can God do anything from this? Well, look what he did with Judah and Tamar and just know that God can take things that even the enemy meant for evil and he can cause it to become something good and beautiful for you. I hope that this encourages you today. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, and today we just offer up every aspect of our lives, past, present, and future, and we thank you and trust that you are working in every single detail of our lives. We thank you that you are a merciful God who redeems, who heals, and who makes new. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional.
