Welcome to day 189 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Rainey Goudo and today we're going to be reading through 1 Chronicles chapter 5 verses 18 through 26 and chapter 6, Acts chapter 26, Psalm chapter 6, and Proverbs chapter 18 verses 20 and 21. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. 1 Chronicles 5, verses 18 through 26. The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 warriors, valiant men who carried the shield and sword, drew the bow and were trained for battle. They waged war against the Hagrites, as well as Jeter, Naphesh, and Nodab. And because they cried out to God in battle, they were helped against their enemies, and the Hagrites and all their allies were delivered into their hands. Because they put their trust in God, he answered their prayers. They seized the livestock of the Hagrites, fifty thousand camels, two hundred and fifty thousand sheep, and two thousand donkeys. They also took one hundred thousand captives, and many others fell slain, because the battle belonged to God, and they occupied the land until the exile. Now the people of the half tribe of Manasseh were numerous. They settled in the land from Bashan to Belhermon, that is, Senor, also known as Mount Hermon. These were the heads of their families. Ephir, Ishai, Eliel, Azrael, Jeremiah, Hodoviah, and Jodel. They were mighty men of valor, famous men and heads of their families. But they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and they prostituted themselves with the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, that is, Tiglath Pelezer, king of Assyria, to take the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh into exile, and he brought them to Halah, Habor, Herah, and the river of Gozin, where they remain to this day. 1 Chronicles 6. The sons of Levi, Gershon, Kohath, and Morari, the sons of Kohath, Amram, Ishar, Hebron, and Uziel. The children of Amram, Aaron, Moses, and Miriam. The sons of Aaron, Nadab, Abahu, Eliezar, and Ithamar. Elieazar was the father of Phinihas. Phinehas was the father of Abishhua. Abishwah was the father of Bukai. Bukai was the father of Uzai. Uzai was the father of Zerahiah. Zerahiah was the father of Moreth. Moraiath was the father of Amariah. Amariah was the father of Ahitub. Ahitub was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Ahimaz. Ahimaz was the father of Azariah. Azariah was the father of Johannon. Johannon was the father of Azariah, who served as priest in the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem. Azariah was the father of Amariah. Amariah was the father of Ahitub. Ahitub was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Shalem. Shalem was the father of Hilkiah. Hilkiah was the father of Azariah. Azariah was the father of Zariah. And Zariah was the father of Jehosadak. Jehosadak went into captivity when the Lord sent Judah and Jerusalem into exile by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar. The sons of Levi, Gershem, Kohath, and Morari. These are the names of the sons of Gershem, Libnai and Shimei. The sons of Kohath, Amram, Ishar, Hebron, and Uziel, the sons of Morari, Malai and Mushai. These are the clans of the Levites listed according to their fathers, of Gershem, Libnai his son, Jehath his son, Zemah his son, Joah his son, Ido his son, Zirah his son, and Jeatharai his son, the descendants of Kohath, Aminadab his son, Korah his son, Asser his son, Elkanah his son, Abiasaph his son, Asser his son, Tahath his son, Uriel his son, Uzziah his son, and Shahl his son. The descendants of Elkanah, Emasi, Ahimath, Elkanah his son, Zophi his son, Nahath his son, Eliab his son, Jeroam his son, and Elkanah his son. The sons of Samuel, Joel his firstborn, and Abijah his second son. The descendants of Morari, Malai, Libnai his son, Shimei his son, Uzzah his son, Shimeah his son, Hagiah his son, and Asiah his son. These are the men David put in charge of the music in the house of the Lord after the ark rested there. They ministered with song before the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, until Solomon built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they performed their duties according to the regulations given them. These are the men who served, together with their sons, from the Kohathites. Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel, the son of Elkanah, the son of Jerem, the son of Eliel, the son of Toah, the son of Zuf, the son of Elkanah, the son of Mahath, the son of Emesai, the son of Elkanah, the son of Joel, the son of Azariah, the son of Zaphaniah, the son of Tahath, the son of Asur, the son of Abiasaph, the son of Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, the son of Israel. Heman's kinsman was Asaph, who served at his right hand. Asaph, the son of Barekiah, the son of Shimeah, the son of Michael, the son of Baasiah, the son of Mauchaijah, the son of Ethnai, the son of Zerah, the son of Adiah, the son of Ethan, the son of Zimah, the son of Shimei, the son of Jahath, the son of Gershem, the son of Levi. On the left were their kinsmen, the sons of Morari, Ethan, the son of Kishai, the son of Abdai, the son of Malek, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Amaziah, the son of Hilkiah, the son of Amzai, the son of Banai, the son of Shemer, the son of Mali, the son of Mushai, the son of Morari, the son of Levi. Their fellow Levites were assigned to every kind of service of the tabernacle, the house of God. But Aaron and his sons did all the work of the most holy place. They presented the offerings on the altar of burnt offering and on the altar of incense to make atonement for Israel, according to all that Moses, the servant of God had commanded. These were the descendants of Aaron, Elieazar his son, Phinehas his son, Abishhua his son, Bukai his son, Uzai his son, Zirahiah his son, Miraoth his son, Amariah his son, Ahitub his son, Zadok his son, and Ahimeaz his son. Now these were the territories assigned to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clan for their settlements, because the first lot fell to them. They were given Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasture lands. But the fields and villages around the city were given to Caleb, son of Jephanah. So the descendants of Aaron were given Hebron, a city of refuge, Libna, Jader, Eshtamoah, Hylan, Deber, Ashan, Judah, and Bethshemesh, together with their pasture lands. And from the tribe of Benjamin they were given Gibeon, Giba, Alamath, and Anathoth, together with their pasture lands. So they had thirteen cities in all among their families. To the rest of the Kohathites, ten cities were allotted from the half tribe of Manasseh. The Gershemites, according to their clans, were allotted thirteen cities from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Manasseh in Bashan. The Morarites, according to their clans, were allotted twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun. So the Israelites gave to the Levites these cities and their pasture lands. They assigned by lot the cities named above from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin. And some of the clans of the Kohathites were given cities from the tribe of Ephraim for their territory. They were given Shechem, a city of refuge, with its pasture lands in the hill country of Ephraim, and Gizer, Jochmiam, Bethhoron, Isalon, and Gathrimon, together with their pasture lands. And from the half tribe of Manasseh, the rest of the clans of the Kohathites were given Aner and Biliam, together with their pasture lands. The Gershemites received the following. From the clan of the half tribe of Manasseh, they were given Golan and Bashan and also Ashtaroth, together with their pasture lands. From the tribe of Issachar they were given Kedesh, Dabarath, Ramoth, and Anam, together with their pasture lands. From the tribe of Asher they were given Meshal, Abdon, Hukok, and Rehab, together with their pasture lands. And from the tribe of Naphtali, they were given Kedesh in Galilee, Hamon, and Kiriathaim, together with their pasture lands. The Morarites, the rest of the Levites, received the following. From the tribe of Zebulun they were given Ramono and Tabor, together with their pasture lands. From the tribe of Reuben, east of the Jordan, opposite Jericho, they were given Bezer in the wilderness, Jazzah, Kedamoth, and Mephaieth, together with their pasture lands. And from the tribe of Gad they were given Ramoth and Gilead, Maenaum, Heshbon, and Jazer, together with their pasture lands. Acts chapter 26. Agrippa said to Paul, You have permission to speak for yourself. Then Paul stretched out his hand and began his defense. King Agrippa, I consider myself fortunate to stand before you today to defend myself against all the accusations of the Jews, especially since you are acquainted with all the Jewish customs and controversies. I beg you, therefore, to listen to me patiently. Surely all the Jews know how I have lived from my earliest childhood among my own people and also in Jerusalem. They have known me for a long time and can testify, if they are willing, that I lived as a Pharisee, adhering to the strictest sect of our religion. And now I stand on trial because of my hope in the promise that God made to our fathers, the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. It is because of this hope, O king, that I am accused by the Jews. Why would any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead? So then, I too was convinced that I ought to do all I could to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And that is what I did in Jerusalem. With authority from the chief priest, I put many of the saints in prison, and when they were condemned to death, I cast my vote against them. I frequently had them punished in the synagogues, and I tried to make them blaspheme. In my raging fury against them, I even went to foreign cities to persecute them. In this pursuit I was on my way to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priest. About noon, O king, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining around me and my companions. We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me in Hebrew, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads. Who are you, Lord? I asked. I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting, the Lord replied. But get up and stand on your feet, for I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen from me and what I will show you. I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those sanctified by faith in me. So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, first to those in Damascus and Jerusalem, then to everyone in the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles. I declared that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds worthy of their repentance. For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple courts and tried to kill me. But I have had God's help to this day, and I stand here to testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen, that the Christ would suffer, and as the first to rise from the dead, would proclaim lie to our people and to the Gentiles. At this stage of Paul's defense, Festus exclaimed in a loud voice, You are insane, Paul. Your great learning is driving you to madness. But Paul answered, I am not insane, most excellent Festus. I am speaking words of truth and sobriety. For the king knows about these matters, and I can speak freely to him. I am confident that none of this has escaped his notice, because it was not done in a corner. King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you do. Then Agrippa said to Paul, Can you persuade me in such a short time to become a Christian? Short time or long, Paul replied. I wish to God that not only you, but all who hear me this day may become what I am, except for these chains. Then the king and the governor rose, along with Bernice and those seated with them. On their way out, they said to one another, This man has done nothing worthy of death or imprisonment. And Agrippa said to Festus, This man could have been released if he had not appealed to Caesar. Psalm chapter 6. O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath. Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am frail. Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are in agony. My soul is deeply distressed. How long, O Lord, how long? Turn, O Lord, and deliver my soul, save me because of your loving devotion. For there is no mention of you in death. Who can praise you from Sheol? I am weary from groaning. All night I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes fail from grief, they grow dim because of all my foes. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity, for the Lord has heard my weeping. The Lord has heard my cry for mercy, the Lord accepts my prayer. All my enemies will be ashamed and dismayed, they will turn back in sudden disgrace. Proverbs eighteen verses twenty and twenty one. From the fruit of his mouth a man's belly is filled, with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied. Life and death are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Today's devotional is coming from first Chronicles five verses eighteen through twenty. It describes all of these warriors, forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty from the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the Half tribe of Manasseh. The Bible says they were valiant men who carried the shield and sword, drew the bow, and were trained for battle, and they waged war against all of these enemies, the Hagrites, as well as Jeter, Nafish, and Nodab. And it doesn't say because of how excellent they were as warriors. It doesn't describe how unbelievably awesome they were that they won. It says in verse 20, and because they cried out to God in battle, sometimes you were in the battle and you realize that the enemy is too strong for you. You are not equipped for this battle. You may not have what it takes. You realize you may be out and matched. So in the battle, they cried out to God. And it says, Because they cried out to God in battle, they were helped against their enemies, and the Hagrites and all their allies were delivered into their hands. And I love this last sentence right here. Because they put their trust in God, he answered their prayers. Maybe you weren't trusting in God before the battle came. Well, you're in the battle now, and you realize, oh, this is a battle, and I am about to get my butt kicked up between my shoulders. Well, let me encourage you to do what they did. In that battle, cry out to God. Put your trust in him, and he will answer your prayers. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, and today I lift up every listener who may be in a battle right now. Maybe they realize that they are unmatched and they don't have what it takes. They don't have the wisdom they need. They don't have the strength or the perseverance. Emotionally, they're just drained and overwhelmed. As they cry out to you, even right now, I thank you that you step right in to help them against those enemies and bring deliverance to them. Because we trust in you, answer our prayers. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional. If you're getting something out of the Bible 365 podcast, consider sharing it with your family and with your friends. Please continue to pray for me. I am praying for you. Have a great day, and I'll see you tomorrow with day 190.
