Welcome to day 191 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Randy Goudo, and today we're going to be reading through 1 Chronicles chapters 9 and 10, Acts chapter 27, verses 21 through 44, Psalm chapter 8, and Proverbs chapter 18, verses 23 and 24. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. 1 Chronicles chapter 9. So all Israel was recorded in the genealogies written in the book of the kings of Israel. But Judah was exiled to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness. Now the first to resettle their own property in their cities were Israelites, priests, Levites, and temple servants. Some of the descendants of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh lived in Jerusalem. Uthai, son of Amihud, the son of Amri, the son of Imri, the son of Banai, a descendant of Perez, son of Judah, from the Shalanites, Azaiah the firstborn, and his sons. From the Zerahites, Jewel, and 690 relatives, from the Benjamites, Salu, son of Meshulam, the son of Hodoviah, the son of Hasanuah, Ibnah, son of Jerahim, Elah, son of Uzai, the son of Mikrai, Meshulam, son of Shapatiah, the son of Ruel, the son of Ibnijah, and 956 of their relatives according to their genealogy. All these men were heads of their families. From the priest, Jediah, Jehoiarib, and Jacan, Azariah, son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshulam, the son of Zadok, the son of Mereath, the son of Ahitub, the chief official of God's temple, Adeiah, son of Jerohem, the son of Pasher, the son of Mauchaijah, Maesai, son of Adiel, the son of Jazirah, the son of Meshulam, the son of Mashilamith, the son of Imr, and 1,760 of their relatives, the heads of their families, able men for the work of the service of the house of God, from the Levites, Shemeah, son of Hashab, the son of Azrakam, the son of Hashabiah, a descendant of Morari, Bakbakar, Heresh, Galal, and Madaniah, son of Micah, the son of Zikri, the son of Asaph, Obadiah, son of Shemeah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthon, and Barekiah, son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who lived in the villages of the Natophathites. These were the gatekeepers, Shalem, Akob, Talman, Ahiman, and their relatives. Shalem was their chief. He was previously stationed at the king's gate on the east side. These were the gatekeepers from the camp of the Levites. Shalem, son of Kor, the son of Abiasaph, the son of Korah, and his relatives from the Korahites were assigned to guard the thresholds of the tent, just as their fathers had been assigned to guard the entrance to the dwelling of the Lord. In earlier times, Phinehas, son of Eliezer, had been in charge of the gatekeepers, and the Lord was with him. Zachariah, son of Meshelamiah, was the gatekeeper at the entrance to the tent of meeting. The number of those chosen to be gatekeepers at the thresholds was 212. They were registered by genealogy in their villages. David and Samuel the seer had appointed them to their positions of trust. So they and their descendants were assigned to guard the gates of the house of the Lord, the house called the tent. The gatekeepers were stationed on the four sides, east, west, north, and south. Their relatives came from their villages at fixed times to serve with them for seven-day periods. But the four chief gatekeepers who were Levites were entrusted with the rooms and the treasuries of the house of God. They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they were responsible for guarding it and opening it every morning. Some of them were in charge of the articles used in worship, to count them whenever they were brought in or taken out. Others were put in charge of the furnishings and other articles of the sanctuary, as well as the fine flour, wine, oil, frankincense, and spices, and some of the sons of the priest mixed the spices. A Levite named Matathiah, the firstborn son of Shalom the Korahite, was entrusted with baking the bread. Some of their Kohathite relatives were responsible for preparing the rows of the show bread every Sabbath. Those who were musicians, the heads of Levite families, stayed in the temple chambers and were exempt from other duties because they were on duty day and night. All these were heads of Levite families, chiefs according to their genealogies, and they lived in Jerusalem. Jaiel, the father of Gibeon, lived in Gibeon. His wife's name was Maiekah. Abdon was his firstborn son. Then Zur, Kish, Baal, Nur, Nadab, Gidor, Ahio, Zachariah, and Mikloth. Mikloth was the father of Shimiam. They too lived alongside their relatives in Jerusalem. Nur was the father of Kish, Kish was the father of Saul, and Saul was the father of Jonathan, Malkish, Abinadab, and Eshbel, the son of Jonathan, Meribel, who was the father of Micah, the sons of Micah, Python, Melech, Toreah, and Ahaz. Ahaz was the father of Jerah, Jerah was the father of Alamath, Azmavath, and Zimri. Zimri was the father of Mosa, Mazah was the father of Biniah, Raphiah was his son, Alasa his son, and Azul his son. And Azel had six sons, and these were their names, Azrakam, Bokaru, Ishmael, Shiariah, Obadiah, and Hanan. These were the sons of Azel. 1 Chronicles chapter 10. Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before them, and many fell slain on Mount Gilboah. The Philistines followed hard after Saul and his sons, and they killed Saul's sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Maucheshua. When the battle intensified against Saul, the archers overtook him and wounded him. Then Saul said to his armor bearer, Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised men will come and torture me. But his armor bearer was terrified and refused to do it. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it. When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he too fell on his own sword and died. So Saul died together with his three sons in all his house. When all the Israelites in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons had died, they abandoned their cities and ran away. So the Philistines came and occupied their cities. The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboah. They stripped Saul, cut off his head, took his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people. They put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung his head in the temple of Dagon. When all the people of Jabesh Gilead heard about everything the Philistines had done to Saul, all their men of valor set out and retrieved the bodies of Saul and his sons and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days. So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the Lord, because he did not keep the word of the Lord, and even consulted a medium for guidance, and he failed to inquire of the Lord. So the Lord put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David, son of Jesse. Acts 27, verses 21 through 44. After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up among them and said, Men, you should have followed my advice not to sail from Crete. Then you would have averted this disaster and loss. But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because you will not experience any loss of life, but only of the ship. For just last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar. And look, God has granted you the lives of all who sail with you. So take courage, men, for I believe God that it will happen just as He told me. However, we must run aground on some island. On the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea. About midnight, the sailors sensed that they were approaching land. They took soundings and found that the water was twenty fathoms deep. Going a little farther, they took another set of soundings that read fifteen fathoms. Fearing that we would run aground on the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daybreak. Meanwhile, the sailors attempted to escape from the ship. Pretending to lower anchors from the bow, they let the lifeboat down into the sea. But Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, unless these men remain with the ship, you cannot be saved. So the soldiers cut the ropes to the lifeboat and set it adrift. Right up to daybreak, Paul kept urging them all to eat. Today is your fourteenth day in constant suspense, without taking any food. So for your own preservation, I urge you to eat something, because not a single hair of your head will be lost. After he had said this, Paul took bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all, then he broke it and began to eat. They were all encouraged and took some food themselves. In all, there were two hundred and seventy-six of us on board. After the men had eaten their fill, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea. When daylight came, they did not recognize the land, but they sighted a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could. Cutting away the anchors, they left them in the sea as they loosened the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach. But the ship struck a sandbar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was being broken up by the pounding of the waves. The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners so none of them could swim to freedom, but the centurion, wanting to spare Paul's life, thwarted their plan. He commanded those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land. The rest were to follow on planks in various parts of the ship. In this way everyone was brought safely to land. Psalm chapter 8. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. You have set your glory above the heavens. From the mouths of children and infants you have ordained praise on account of your adversaries, to silence the enemy and avenger. When I behold your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, or the Son of Man that you care for him? You made him a little lower than the angels, you crowned him with glory and honor. You made him ruler of the works of your hands, you have placed everything under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and even the beasts of the field, the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. Proverbs eighteen, verses twenty three and twenty four. The poor man pleads for mercy, but the rich man answers harshly. A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother. Today's devotional is coming from Acts chapter twenty seven, verses twenty-one through twenty five. The men had gone a long time without food, they're obviously very hungry, and they're also very scared, they're fearful. Paul begins to speak to them and says, I urge you to keep up your courage. You know, courage is something that you have to keep up. It can run a little low sometimes, and you gotta wind that thing up so that you can keep it up. He says, Because you will not experience any loss of life, but only of the ship. In other words, there's gonna be some loss, but you will be alive, but this ship right here, it's gonna be gone, it's over with. And he goes on, for just last night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said, Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand before Caesar, and look, God has granted you the lives of all who sell with you. There is so much that we can say right now. You know, when you're in a storm, and maybe there's a lot of people around you, you gotta have a Paul in there, someone who is walking with the Lord, someone who's praying, someone who can hear from God, to take courage and to not be afraid. Paul was able to boldly say, Don't be afraid, keep up your courage. He says it again in verse 25 So take courage, men, for I believe God that it will happen just as He told me. Maybe I'm not the one who heard from God, but I want to be close to somebody who in that same storm, in the same ship, they are hearing from God. And God had mercy on all of the men in that boat because of one man, Paul. And let's just think about this too. What if this boat that you're in crashes, runs aground, sinks, but you're alive so many times we tie everything that we are to the circumstances around us. And you know what we really have to do? We have to separate those things. Listen, maybe your ship's gonna make it, but maybe it won't. But you're gonna be alright because the Lord is standing with you. The angel of the God to whom we belong and whom we serve, he stands beside us, and maybe he's trying to say, do not be afraid, so that we can also encourage the people around us to take courage, but don't be afraid. You're gonna be alright. This is some preaching material right here, and I'm trying not to preach. Anyway, I hope that this encourages you. It sure encouraged me today. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus, and my prayer over all of our listeners today is that they would keep up their courage, take courage, and that they would not be afraid, that they would recognize that you are with them, and that your angel is standing by them, and they have nothing to be afraid of, because you are in that ship with them, and they are going to be all right. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional. If you're getting something out of the Bible 365 podcast, consider sharing it with your family and with your friends. Please continue to pray for me. I am praying for you.
