Bible 365
For over 30 years I’ve talked with men and women who deeply love God, but struggle to understand the Bible. Some believe that unless you are a Theologian, Pastor, or Christian leader, you really can’t understand it. But this is just not true. I’ve launched this simple podcast to help everyday men and women fall in love with the Word of God. Each day I’ll read a portion of Scriptures from the Old and New Testament, covering the entire Bible in one year. After I’ll give a brief devotional. Welcome to day 197 of the Bible 365 podcast. My name is Randy Goudo, and today we're going to be reading through 1 Chronicles chapters 22 and 23, Romans chapter 3, verses 9 through 31, Psalm chapter 12, and Proverbs chapter 19 verses 13 and 14. The translation I'm using throughout this podcast is the Berean Standard Bible, also known as the BSB. Let's read. 1 Chronicles chapter 22. Then David said, Here shall be the house of the Lord God, as well as the altar of burnt offering for Israel. So David gave orders to gather the foreigners in the land of Israel, from whom he appointed stone cutters to prepare finished stones for building the house of God. David provided a large quantity of iron to make the nails for the doors of the gateways and for the fittings, together with more bronze than could be weighed, and more cedar logs than could be counted. For the Sidonians and Tyrians had brought a large quantity of cedar logs to David. And David said, My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore I must make preparations for it. So David made lavish preparations before his death. Then David called for his son Solomon and instructed him to build a house for the Lord, the God of Israel. My son, said David to Solomon, it was in my heart to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, but this word of the Lord came to me. You have shed much blood and waged great wars. You are not to build a house for my name, because you have shed so much blood on the ground before me. But a son will be born to you, who will be a man of rest. I will give him rest from all his enemies on every side, for his name will be Solomon, and I will grant to Israel peace and quiet during his reign. He is the one who will build a house for my name. He will be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel forever. Now, my son, may the Lord be with you, and may you succeed in building the house of the Lord your God, as he said you would. Above all, may the Lord give you insight and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel, so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God. Then you will succeed, if you carefully follow the statutes and ordinances that the Lord commanded Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or discouraged. Now behold, I have taken great pains to provide for the house of the Lord, one hundred thousand talents of gold, one million talents of silver, and bronze and iron too great to be weighed. I have also provided timber and stone, and you may add to them. You also have many workers, stone cutters, masons, carpenters, and men skilled in every kind of work, in gold and silver, bronze and iron, craftsmen beyond number. Now begin the work, and may the Lord be with you. Then David ordered all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon. Is not the Lord your God with you? And has he not granted you rest on every side? For he has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land has been subdued before the Lord and his people. Now set your heart and soul to seek the Lord your God. Begin building the sanctuary of the Lord God, so that you may bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord and the holy articles of God into the temple that will be built for the name of the Lord. Chronicles chapter 23. When David was old and full of years, he installed his son Solomon as king over Israel. Then he gathered all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priest and Levites. The Levites, thirty years of age or older, were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand. Of these, said David, twenty-four thousand are to oversee the work of the house of the Lord, six thousand are to be officers and judges, four thousand are to be gatekeepers, and four thousand are to praise the Lord with the instruments I have made for giving praise. Then David divided the Levites into divisions according to the sons of Levi, Gershon, Kohath, and Morari, the Gershonites, Laden and Shimei, the sons of Laden, Jehael I, Zetham and Joel, three and all. The sons of Shimei, Shelamoth, Haziel, and Haran, three and all. These were the heads of the families of Laden. And the sons of Shimei, Jahath, Zinah, Jaush, and Bariah. These were the sons of Shimei, four and all. Jahath was the first, and Zaizah was the second. But Jaush and Bariah did not have many sons, so they were counted as one family and received a single assignment. The sons of Kohath, Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uziel, four and all. The sons of Amram, Aaron and Moses. Aaron and his descendants were set apart forever to consecrate the most holy things, to burn incense before the Lord, to minister before him, and to pronounce blessings in his name forever. As for Moses the man of God, his sons were named among the tribe of Levi. The sons of Moses, Gershom and Eliazir. The descendants of Gershom, Shebuel was the first. The descendants of Eliazir, Rehobiah was the first. Eli Ezir did not have any other sons, but the sons of Rehobiah were very numerous. The sons of Izhar, Shalomoth was the first. The sons of Hebron, Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second, Jehaziel the third, and Jechemeam the fourth. The sons of Uziel, Micah was the first, and Eshiah the second. The sons of Marari, Mali and Mushai. The sons of Mali, Elieazar and Kish. Elieazar died without having any sons. He had only daughters. Their cousins, the sons of Kish, married them. The sons of Mushai, Mali, Eder, and Jeremoth, three in all. These were the descendants of Levi by their families, the heads of families registered individually by name, those twenty years of age or older who worked in the service of the house of the Lord. For David had said, The Lord, the God of Israel, has given rest to his people and has come to dwell in Jerusalem forever. So now the Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles for its service. For according to the final instructions of David, the Levites twenty years of age or older were counted, but their duty was to assist the descendants of Aaron with the service of the house of the Lord, being responsible for the courts and chambers, the purification of all the holy things, and the work of the service of the house of God, as well as for the rows of the showbread, the fine flour for the grain offering, the wafers of unleavened bread, the baking, the mixing, and all measurements of quantity and size. They were also to stand every morning to give thanks and praise to the Lord, and likewise in the evening. Whenever burnt offerings were presented to the Lord on the Sabbaths, new moons, and appointed feast, they were to serve regularly before the Lord in the numbers prescribed for them. So the Levites were to carry out the responsibilities for the tent of meeting and the holy place, and, under their brothers, the descendants of Aaron, the service of the house of the Lord. Romans chapter 3, verses 9 through 31. What then, are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin, as it is written, There is no one righteous, not even one. There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless. There is no one who does good, not even one. Their throats are open graves, their tongues practice deceit. The venom of vipers is on their lips, their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness, their feet are swift to shed blood, ruin and misery lie in their wake, and the way of peace they have not known. There is no fear of God before their eyes. Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be justified in his sight by works of the law, for the law merely brings awareness of sin. But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, as attested by the law and the prophets. And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. God presented him as an atoning sacrifice in his blood through faith, in order to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had passed over the sins committed beforehand. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus. Where then is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, since there is only one God who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. Do we then nullify the law by this faith? Certainly not. Instead, we uphold the law. Psalm chapter 12. Help, O Lord, for the godly are no more, the faithful have vanished from among men. They lie to one another, they speak with flattering lips and a double heart. May the Lord cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue. They say, With our tongues we will prevail, we own our lips, who can be our master? For the cause of the oppressed and for the groaning of the needy, I will now arise, says the Lord, I will bring safety to him who yearns. The words of the Lord are flawless, like silver refined in a furnace, like gold purified sevenfold. You, O Lord, will keep us, you will forever guard us from this generation. The wicked wander freely, and vileness is exalted among men. Proverbs nineteen, verses thirteen and fourteen. A foolish son is his father's ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping. Houses and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord. Today's devotional is coming from first Chronicles twenty two, verse five, and let me just say this. It is hard to say Chronicles, and I recognize that it is a struggle for me to do that. So please pray for me. Anyway, first Chronicles chapter twenty-two verse five, and this is gonna maybe be too simple today. Let's read it. And David said, My son Solomon is young and inexperienced, and the house to be built for the Lord must be exceedingly magnificent, famous and glorious throughout all lands. Therefore I must make preparations for it. So David made lavish preparations before his death. Now I usually name every episode when I have finished the devotional. I mix everything down, I listen to it, make sure everything is pretty okay, decent, and then I name the episode. Rarely do I name them before, but I'm already naming today's devotional, and I'm calling it We Need Each Other. And I'm talking about an older generation and a younger generation. David wanted to build this temple for the Lord, but he was not permitted to. He was not allowed to. And so he knew that his son Solomon from the word of the Lord was going to build it. And listen to what David says. The generation below us is obviously they're young and inexperienced. And so we don't criticize them, we don't mock them, you know, we don't just throw our hands up and say, Hey, hope you go figure it out. No, David recognized that the work of the Lord was going to continue on through his generations, through his son. God is the God of multiple generations. He's the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And so David says, Therefore, I must make preparations for it. And it wasn't just about Solomon, it was about the work of the Lord. David was like, This must be exceedingly magnificent, famous, and glorious throughout all lands. So I'm going to do my part so that he can be able to succeed. It says, So David made lavish preparations before his death. Listen, younger generation, you need the older generation. You need them to make lavish preparations before that generation passes to go be with the Lord. And older generation, you need that younger generation. And true, they're inexperienced, but guess what? So were you. And we need that young generation to pick up the torch so that it can go on from generation to generation. It is not just about your era, it's about the work of the Lord, which must be exceedingly magnificent, famous, and glorious all over the world. I hope that you get something out of this devotional today. I hope it challenges you. And I hope that if you're older, you recognize that your work is not finished because you're still breathing. There is still a purpose that God has for you. And it's not just about you, but it's about the work of the Lord continuing to the next generation. And if you're younger, honor that older generation, recognize that God did something powerful and mighty in them and through them in the days that they were walking by faith, trusting God and building things, and draw from them, receive from them, because they're going to make some lavish preparations for you. Let's pray. Father, I come to you in the name of Jesus. And today, I just want to say thank you for moving from generation to generation, just being faithful to work in each and every one of us. I pray that we would be a people who don't compete with one another, but we honor the older generation and we honor the younger generation. You are the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Draw us close by the presence of your Holy Spirit and reveal your Son to us. We ask all these things in the precious name of Jesus. Amen. Well, I sure hope you enjoyed today's devotional. If you're getting something out of the Bible 365 podcast, consider sharing it with your family and with your friends. Please continue to pray for me. I am praying for you. Have a great day, and I'll see you tomorrow with day 1980.
