🎙️ Deep Dive Drive – Episode 80: Are We Removing Pressure… or Removing Motivation?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of Deep Dive Drive, recorded on my morning commute, I explore a question that’s becoming more and more relevant in modern coaching and youth development:
Are we removing pressure… or are we accidentally removing motivation as well?
As coaches, parents, and leaders, we naturally want players to enjoy the game, feel supported, and avoid unnecessary stress. But in trying to protect players from pressure, are we also taking away the challenge, hunger, and drive that help people grow?
In this episode, I talk about:
- The difference between healthy pressure and harmful pressure
- Why challenge is an important part of development
- How pressure can build resilience, focus, and motivation
- The risks of making environments too comfortable
- Why players need opportunities to compete, struggle, and respond
This episode isn’t about creating fear or unrealistic expectations.
It’s about understanding that growth often comes from learning how to handle pressure — not avoiding it completely.
Because without challenge, motivation can fade.
And without pressure, players may never discover what they’re truly capable of.
If you’re a coach, parent, or leader, this episode will challenge you to reflect on the environments you’re creating and whether they’re preparing players for the realities of performance and life.
Support them. Challenge them. Prepare them.
One drive at a time.
