Hey, hey, hey, everyone B here. We are here with Paul Likens today, who is also known as Palm Beaches Paul. We're super excited to talk to him, all things Delray Beach and also get into a little bit of the real estate down in the Florida area. So, paul, go ahead, take it away, let's introduce yourself, tell everybody what you do and let's go from there.
Speaker 2:Hey, welcome, happy to be here. I'm Paul Eikens. I go by a nickname, paul Meeches Paul, from a YouTube channel that I created, and I am a realtor that works down here in Southeast Florida. I lived here about 33 years, originally from Texas. I enjoy living here so much that I created a YouTube channel to show people what it's like to live here that are moving from other states, and part of that is not just real estate but also showing them all the fun things the beaches, the restaurants, activity, events and stuff that are part of what it's like to live here. I kind of jokingly call myself tour guide. I'll say you know your local realtor and guide to the Palm beaches, because that's what I do. I kind of show people what living in Palm beach County is, which we nickname it the Palm beaches because so many of the cities have the name beach at the end, like Delray beach, boynton beach and stuff like that.
Speaker 1:Love it, love it, love it. So what made you decide to move from Texas to Florida?
Speaker 2:Uh, ex-wife.
Speaker 1:Okay, got it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so I was. I was uh good time we were dating and she was from Florida and she left Texas and said that she wanted to go back to Florida and so I followed her and uh, first time I saw that beautiful blue aqua water, I was like, oh my goodness, I literally jumped in with, like dress, shorts on and uh, yeah, I did. I didn't have a bainstain. I said I'm going swimming this water's. Being from texas, I'd never seen water so cleared my life and, um, it was amazing. So I fell in love with it and then ended up staying here. You know, I had had a kid and all that stuff and decided, well, you know what, it's not a bad place to stay and let's make it work. And fortunately I was able to remarry and so I have two kids and, uh, two dogs and love living here.
Speaker 1:Yay, I love the dogs part too. That makes me heart happy every time I hear about it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, my one's laying next to me somewhere. Another one just turned six yesterday. We just celebrated her birthday, happy birthday puppy.
Speaker 1:All right, so tell me what it's like to kind of live and work in Delray Beach.
Speaker 2:Yeah, cool. So Delray Beach is referred to as the village by the sea. It's a smaller town right here, if you look at a county from a north side and a south side because we run along I-95 runs down right east coast of Florida. Delray's kind of like down at the bottom half of Palm Beach County. There's one more city and then it goes into another county Small town but very popular. It's a very hot spot.
Speaker 2:It's known because of atlantic avenue. Uh, this strip uh, atlantic avenue kind of runs the whole length from one end all the way like out west towards the turnpike down to dead ends east right on a1a which is the ocean. But the main part when people think atlantic avenue is this one section from swinton avenue east to the beach and it's just packed with restaurants and shops and lots of hotels. It's a neat little town. It has grown quite a bit. Some people aren't happy about how fast it's grown. You know they kind of want to keep it that small town vibe which everybody always wants that. But you know progress happens, it's just going to happen and so it's a big destination for a lot of people on the East Coast. We get tons of people from Canada and Philly and a lot of people from the Michigan area, and then obviously New York and all those places. They all come down for the winter to enjoy the beaches, the restaurants and all the hotels, and many of them have winter homes there, which is what I do as a realtor.
Speaker 1:Oh, okay, that's awesome. So I'm thinking in my head you said there's like this little strip, so I'm automatically going to like Miami. Is it similar to that? Like the strip wise?
Speaker 2:Yes, smaller than you're thinking, like Ocean Avenue, which is much bigger, and Lincoln Road, you know there's a little bigger and all that. But yeah, it's got the boutique shops there's now Lily Pulitzer has a place there that opened up, and then they have some old shops that have been there for a very long time for like the women's shops, and then they have lots of quaint restaurants and then some bigger restaurants that have come in a lot of like locally owned type, locally owned chains that are like maybe just local to palm beach county and then just really fun places, mixture of of maybe upscale to a place like johnny brown's, which is known for live music and it's right on the railroad track and it's just an open bar and kind of a fun place. On Thursday nights, especially in the season, in the winter, it's absolutely packed. It was famous for many years when I was younger of the Elvis impersonator who was always there and stuff, but then they moved on.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you could see the Elvis guy every Thursday, but now they have more a variety of bands that play there. Elvis guy every Thursday, but now they have more, uh, a variety of bands that play there. So and it's a neat and it's very walkable. So what the the? The attraction in our office that I work for, my my real estate office that I work for is in Delray beach, so it's very neat because oftentimes we'll just go to lunch and walk right over to a local spot that we have right in the office and that's what a lot of the people coming here like, because they can stay at one of the many hotels and walk to everything or bike ride.
Speaker 1:So it makes that perfect winter getaway from the cold and dreary weather of the Northeast, so I guess you wouldn't have to have a car rental then there.
Speaker 2:No, really you wouldn't. So for your listeners that are thinking of going there first, they have a thing called the freebie, a golf cart service, and you get an app and you can download the app. It does take a little while. Sometimes they cover all of Delray for a pretty good section of Delray I should say they don't go, I don't think go way past the highway. They keep it into this, that downtown corridor, but anyway it's free and you call them and they come pick you up and they'll take you to the beach and you can go to the bar and have your drinks and go to the beach and have a day and hit the app and ask them to come back and pick you up and take you back to your hotel.
Speaker 2:Many of the hotels do have a beach service for an additional fee, where they have their own golf cart and they'll take you to the beach and give you beach towels and umbrella and all that stuff. Like the Ray Hotel is a boutique sort of upscale hotel and it's located in right there in Delray Beach in the Pineapple District. So it's kind of cool. If I think, for like an initial $35 a day or something they'll take you to the beach and set it up. You have to check, but yeah, so you don't really need the drive to be in Delray.
Speaker 1:I love that. So I am one of those budget savvy persons. So anytime that I travel, I always try to make sure that I you know doing things, and if I could avoid the car rental, I'm okay with it, because I hate driving.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you don't get a Uber or service, depending on the hotel. The hotel has a van, like many hotels do. They can take you straight to the hotel and then you can just bike. You can rent bikes or a lot of the hotels have a bike you can borrow or you could walk. Really it's very walkable and especially in the winter months when it's nice here, there's no humidity, it's usually sunny and perfect, which is why it's so crowded. That's exactly what many people do.
Speaker 1:I love that. So let's talk food real quick, because it's like my favorite subject ever. So you said that you can walk from place to place. What kind of restaurants are there? I know you mentioned the one with the bar. Is there any place that you like maybe wouldn't have tried, but you did try and now you're like, oh, it's my favorite place ever.
Speaker 2:Oh, wow, that's a good question. Well, one of our favorite places that we like to eat at is Rocco's Tacos, which is a really good Mexican restaurant. They have the best homemade guac. It's fantastic Big margaritas, so that's really fun. I can't think of one. I know some of the the ones that are like is like beer trade company is a local, a neat little off the beaten path it's. They have a refrigerator. It's full of a bunch of different craft beer, but then they have a menu of food and you can get like $7 tacos on Tuesday and it's like pork tacos and they're absolutely amazing. That's like, it's like one of those like it's a deal, but it's not like bar food.
Speaker 2:It's like the guy who owns it, chris is amazing and we walk there often we go there and, yeah, we'll have our company lunches over there, so then you can just get a beer or soda, but you just go to the fridge and grab it and then you pay for it at the end. So it's a neat little local spot. But there's a lot of good restaurants up there. There's seafood you know you got Deck 84, which is right on the water. You can go and get food there and have your typical mahi-mahi sandwich and, you know, pina colada or whatever. And there's some more upscale places up and down the avenue, depending, really depending on what your price point is, what you want, and some of them have some pretty good lunch specials.
Speaker 1:That sounds awesome. Anytime you throw tacos in front of me, I am a happy camper, so you would love.
Speaker 2:Oh you would love. Yeah, this is a good place and it's got a fun vibe, A lot of tequila and especially in the season it's always. It's always especially if you go in the evening, which I don't as much as I'm a little bit older now, but you know the younger crowd kicks in there. It's a really hot spot in the evening and you get the outside. Yeah, they have the dining right out on the street, Perfect for people watching. It's a great people to people watch.
Speaker 1:I love that. That sounds so cool, Gosh. That makes it does seem like it's really unique then as far as the community goes and that sort of thing. So how is there another area in Florida that may be a little bit more well known that you would compare it to?
Speaker 2:Well, I mean, delray is kind of. Delray is a pretty unique little town in its own. It is pretty unique because the way it's designed, with that street and all the restaurants and everything around that, it's very walkable. One of the things about South well, at least Palm Beach County, if you're in Miami is different, but up in Palm Beach County there's not a lot of places that are as walkable. I mean, you could stay in West Palm Beach but the beach isn't walkable, which it's across the bridge to walk, depending on when the season. But you got to walk over to Palm Beach right.
Speaker 2:So West Palm Beach is separated by the intercoastal. You'd have to probably maybe just almost like going down to Fort Lauderdale would be the next thing. So that's why it's such a unique spot in Palm Beach County, because the way it was developed in that strip, with the restaurants and the hotels, you don't have to take the car to get anywhere in that area. You can literally bike ride or Uber everywhere you want or take the freebie. It's kind of really unique. And they have done some downtown services with other golf cart services like West Palm Beach and places like that and there's a lot of walking in West Palm Beach which has tons of restaurants and they're putting up new hotels and stuff and the convention center and shopping at like the square. And then if you wanted to go over to Palm Beach over the bridge you could but it's not as close as the way. Delray is Like Delray. Literally if you're in a hotel in Delray you can walk anywhere in five minutes. It's crazy. The beach might take you about 15 minutes to walk through.
Speaker 1:But it would be worth it every second. Oh, it's beautiful.
Speaker 2:You shop and grab a drink on the way go to Shop and grab a drink on the way Go to the wine bar. Okay, let's keep walking.
Speaker 1:Right. Is there any memories or anything? Have you seen anything crazy happen on the beach that you should be like? Oh, this stands out 100%. I love funny stories.
Speaker 2:Oh well, I mean I don't know about funny, but the craziest thing really Del Rey saw was there was a $10 million yacht that washed ashore. It lost power and it was a big fishing yacht, a Viking. It was all over the news and it was there for a week or two before they could get it out and it just lost power. It was crazy to see everyone around there in the news and to see this massive yacht that was stuck up on the beach. Yeah, no, I mean, over the years of being here I've been here.
Speaker 2:I remember when they were filming bad boys 2 the movie and they did film that in delray. Yeah, they filmed the delray beach, along a1a and gulfstream. Gulfstream was think of beverly hills area. The gulfstream was a very affluent, very old money, very expensive 37, 27 million dollar homes. One of the homes that they used, that they blew up in that movie apparently was owned by the heir to the coca-cola family and they they wanted to get rid of the house because they're going to put something new there again. I'm just going by hearsay, but they did blow the house up and I remember it was time to go down explosion. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I remember trying to go down a1a and it was blocked off and you couldn't get anywhere as the police had it blocked off as they were filming and all that. So that's kind of neat and, um, you know, kevin james did buy a house there, uh, from the king of queens, but then he just recently sold it too. So I don't know, maybe florida was too hot for him and stuff.
Speaker 1:So did you sell kevin james the house?
Speaker 2:oh, I wish I sold kevin james house. I wish that's. Yeah, that's a whole different, that's a whole different tier level of real estate there. But uh, right, so we do. Good, it's pretty neat. There's a lot of celebrities that do come down um. We've seen the housewives have been there, also billy joel. A lot of people come to delray. It's a very it's an it place to go. A lot of people come down there um. A lot of money comes down there too, and in the season interesting.
Speaker 1:I always hear of like celebrities and all that and I always just automatically think miami. So it's cool to think that there's another place where they kind of conjugate and you know, people don't really know about it yeah, miami is.
Speaker 2:Yeah, miami is definitely the spot that everyone knows. It's that cultural city, it is a hot spot. It's fun to go down and and it's cool because it's only for the wife and I had two hour. You know, maybe depending on traffic, traffic's gotten bad, but like an hour and a half drive. Go down there, hang out, go there. There's this funny. I know we're not talking about Miami, but there's a place my wife and I will go down there.
Speaker 2:We went to Madrid and Barcelona just the other year for the first time. We went to this place called Sanguin's. That is a chocolate tier place that has churros and they've been around since like 1823 or something like that, or 1857. So they don't have any other locations in the world. And we got back and we looked up and, funny enough, they opened one in miami and they just opened it. Yeah, that's awesome. So so we go to miami. We went down there near lincoln road and they have sanguins and they have the best churros ever. So so if you have a sweet tooth and you're in miami, check, that's a cool place to check out. But, um, yeah, delray is a really neat little town with a lot of fun places to go and, depending on what you want. They have some upscale and they have some private places, some private clubs and stuff like that as well.
Speaker 1:So let's talk real estate, because I know that's your favorite topic.
Speaker 2:Actually travels more. But yeah, this is one I'm honored to be your guest. I want to travel more. But real estate in South Florida, it's interesting. I think right now we're seeing a little bit of a slowdown with a lot of stuff. You know, prices got really high, interest rates got high. We're definitely seeing a slowdown, especially in condos. There's quite a few condos on the market, a lot of condos on the market, more so than we ever had before. So there's a lot of options for people out there. The home prices they're slowly coming down, but not that much Like. I think sellers are realizing okay, we can't price it here anymore, let's price it here, but it's still quite expensive compared to what it was, say, five years ago. Anything from condos to single family homes, to villas there's all sorts and obviously there's the whole 55 and older crowd as well.
Speaker 1:So are you seeing kind of an uptick in condos because people who did have the Airbnbs are starting to sell them off?
Speaker 2:More. So we're seeing an uptick in condos because they're getting hit with huge assessments because, unfortunately, because of what happened in Surfside years ago, they are getting. They're being told that all condos that are three stories or taller and if they're a certain age, have to have what's called a milestone inspection done, by December 31st, I think, if they're 30 years and older. If they're not, if they're 25, they have till 2025 to get it done. But they're having to do these inspections, which are engineering inspections. I'm not an engineer and go into all the details, you can look it up but basically the condo boards are having these done and then if they're being told, hey, you have to do this, this and this to make repairs, whatever those repairs are roof, rebar or whatever then they are assessing the homeowners and those assessments can be quite expensive for some people yeah so some people are just saying, well, let's just sell it.
Speaker 2:But a lot of them are still where. If say b was looking, if you were looking for one, the seller might pay the assessment but you pay this price. Or maybe they lower their price but you pay. So it says it's all it can. So so we're definitely so. That's why I say we're seeing a lot of condos coming up. So I mean, if you're a cash buyer, it might not be a bad time to look, as long as you can make sure that you negotiate that and do your due diligence and make sure that you're not buying a condo that could have a bigger assessment coming up six months down the road. You know you ask those kind of questions but it's still.
Speaker 2:It's always a lot of people. Oh, florida then, and they see stuff, the news and the insurance and stuff. It's crazy because I just looked up we had they sold 457,000 single family homes last year in Florida. That this year is going to be even more. That people are still moving here. They still want the sunshine state, uh, which is good for me, um, but little crowded. But it's still that travel destination. It's a great place with. The beaches are beautiful and Delray's got really big, wide open beaches and a lot of cabanas, like the umbrellas services that you can rent.
Speaker 1:Oh, I love it and enjoy.
Speaker 2:And then what's neat is right across the street you have Tiki Bar right. You can go to the beach bar sandbar and you go right across and you got the sandbar and you can have cocktails and music and get a bite and then go right to the beach.
Speaker 1:That sounds like a perfect day to me.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it is a cool beach town. I mean, the sidewalks are great. It's super bike friendly. If you like to ride a bike, like I do, and there's great places like Rieschwagen it's a German bicycle shop you can rent bikes. A lot of the hotels, like the Ray and the Opel, will have a bike already you can rent, or maybe it's part of the service there staying at the hotel and you can bike ride. You and your partner can go and ride around Delray and really enjoy seeing the city and enjoying all the sights.
Speaker 1:That sounds awesome. So is it typical Florida, where it rains for an hour and a half a day and then it's sunshiny the rest?
Speaker 2:Yeah. So if I was telling you when to come, I would say January through March. It's going to be the most expensive and you're going to pay the most, but it's the prime time. It's cooler cool temperatures, no humidity, beautiful blue sky days, what they call a chamber of commerce day. If you're coming in summer you can get some better deals, but you're going to deal with the rain and the humidity.
Speaker 2:It's summer, it's Florida, it's the tropics, it is hot and it's going to be humid. If you get out early and go to the beach and do your beach day early, get out there and enjoy it, you can have the whole beach to yourself in the summer, which is great. You typically want to get it done before one o'clock. The storms start rolling in, like you're saying B. They do start coming in and they've been pretty strong lots of rain, lightning stuff. So it's Florida and that's going to happen in the summer.
Speaker 2:That slowly starts to fade away after November, which gets the end of hurricane season is November 30th. So once we get out of that tropical cycle and we start getting into what we have winter and we have summer and summer light, as we call it in Florida, they don't really have. They really don't have winter, yeah, but it's still nice. You can get some good deals and you have the time and you're here, say you're staying here for a couple of days. The Florida Keys are only two hours away. You can make a day trip out of my wife and I've done many times.
Speaker 1:That's such a great drive too.
Speaker 2:It's a great drive too. I love it. You can go to Largo, even Isla Mirada, and go down there for the day. Go to the Square Grouper. It's an amazing restaurant and has some of the best sunset views you'll ever get. If you can see the passion in my voice about it why I do the YouTube videos I love living here and I'm a native Texan and I love my state of Texas.
Speaker 2:Texans are proud. Man, I love Texas. If you could see me, on the other side of this camera there's a big Texas flag and stuff from my family. But I've lived in Florida most of my life and you make the best of where you live and there's a lot to make out of Florida. Sure, it has its fair share of problems, like any place. But, man, you go out there and you walk on that beach and you hear the wind blowing through the palm trees.
Speaker 1:To me trees, it's, it's to me it's like it's my, my zen, that's my favorite. I love that. Yes, my absolute favorite thing. So, uh, there is a small place. I can't, I know. I'm not going to say the name of it, right? You just said the name of it is it is morada island.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's fun to say I mess up, so uh, isla morada or island morada there it is, it's yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah so we drove through Murata once.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I never did it right.
Speaker 1:What is it? The Shrimp Shack, I think, is the name of it.
Speaker 2:Maybe I don't know about that one.
Speaker 1:I'll have to look it up. But we went there and literally like we drove through to go down the Key West, just so I can kind of, you know, see the road and all that stuff experience that we rented a convertible. It was on Diners, dive-in and Drives One of those type. Yeah, I got there and I had the key lime pie and it's the very first time I ever had key lime pie and I'm not kidding you, paul, I still crave that key lime pie. Like literally told my husband the other day. I'm like can we just hop in the car real quick and drive?
Speaker 2:Oh, my goodness, there's some amazing places in the Keys for key lime pie. I'm sure if you went to Key West they have a place that sells a bunch of it. You can get everything. Matter of fact, if you're in Key West and you go to Sloppy Joe's they have the best shooter it's called a key lime shooter. Okay, it's ridiculous, oh no, dangerous. Go down to the Keys and you're doing that party the Duval Crawl. Go down to the keys, you're doing that party the duval crawl. Go to sloppy joe's and get a key lime shooter. My god, they're amazing. So, but I'm a key lime fanatic. I'm like, yeah, I love key lime. We my wife often was like I got a surprise for you and she'll get a key lime and you know it's just something from the local area, but but um, yeah if you go go down and get the the good stuff and the keys, it is amazing.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I love the keys it's. It's funny because a two-hour drive and you literally feel like you're not in Florida anymore. It's like you aren't. It's just a chill.
Speaker 1:It's like the Caribbean.
Speaker 2:It's what it feels like it's completely different.
Speaker 1:Is there any place in Delray that has amazing key light pie that I need to know about?
Speaker 2:Oh gosh, I know you can get some really good, not in Delray, but in West Palm Beach. There's a bakery local bakery. I love supporting local people. So, as a realtor, one of the things I've done on my YouTube channel is I try to support small local businesses, because I'm a small local business and I did a food tour. I did a food tour for the West Palm Beach food tour, so that's a great one.
Speaker 2:If you're ever in West Palm Beach, take the West Palm Beach food tour. Crystal, I believe, runs that. It's amazing. But one of the stops is a place called Ganache. It's a local bakery and the chef's Jamal. He was actually on the Food Network Challenge and all that and he won some sort of dessert challenge. He has amazing key lime pie and he has tarts there that were to die for, oh my goodness. And it's in one of his homes called Ganache, yeah, so I try to find unique places for people to experience, because if they're here and they want to experience florida and they want to get some local flavor and and he uses a lot of local fruits and and everything and uh, it's a cool little place and and you can go, and so I like, I like places like that that you walk in and talk to, and it's not just a chain me too.
Speaker 1:I really enjoy, uh, speaking to you know people who own it and that sort of thing, and hearing the stories behind it and why they started this, you know oh yeah, and he's, he's super nice and he was so cool and generous to me like, hey, I'm doing a youtube video, do you want?
Speaker 2:yeah, sure, so I promote, talked about him and and all that and then, and then from that someone saw me making the video. I said, hey, you should do a video about the food tour. So I reached out. They go yeah, we'll come do the video and do the food tour. Some everyone's doing the food tour, but there's this guy with the camera the whole time and trying the food and eating. But it was like fun and and we stopped at his place and he does the whole thing with coconut water and how they do it. It's cool and educational. So yeah.

Speaker 2:Yeah, absolutely yeah, I'll get you a link for that. But yeah, it's a. I did one of the food tours on the channel and walk through and show you some neat places. So that was downtown West Palm, which is a fun place to visit too.
Speaker 1:Tell me the story behind your YouTube channel. I love that you're doing that. By the way, I haven't ventured out into YouTube so much yet, but it kind of intimidates me. I'm not even going to lie.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it can be. I was nervous. So while I was a realtor, you're always trying to find. Like anyone, I would make phone calls or ask friends or go to networking events. You do all that stuff.
Speaker 2:But back when in about 2017, a lot of realtors I saw were doing a lot on Facebook. They were doing these videos and they were doing marketing and you'd see their home tours and even funny commercials that they did to get people to look at the house. So I was brilliant, I go wow. And so I got into some of those groups and started looking at it and I thought, well, maybe I could do. I thought, youtube, right, I'd only messed with YouTube as a way of looking at either funny Seinfeld clips or whatever, whatever at the time, right, like whatever's the trend at that time to go watch the video. But I said, well, and I had no experience, I never videoed in my life, never edited in my life.
Speaker 2:I said, well, let's make videos about why you like Palm Beach County, because my wife and I have raised two boys here and when they were younger, we took them to the parks and we went to the festivals and we went to the green markets, and so I knew if someone was moving from, say, chicago or New Jersey and maybe they've only been to here for spring break but they really don't know what it'd be like moving here as a family or even a single person, I thought let's make videos about that and show them like, hey, if you buy a house, there's more than just the house, right? Because when we all buy a house, you're really buying a community. Like, what am I getting by buying in this neighborhood? It's more than just that little street you live on. So you want to know where the grocery or what's? A cute little bakery, right, a good local coffee shop? So I started doing that stuff. I'd walk around, go, hey guys, today we're in west palm beach and we're gonna check out this historic neighborhood. Uh, the home prices are this and this. Um, by the way, when we're done here, I'm gonna take you to my favorite cuban restaurant where you can get my cafe con leche and and that.
Speaker 2:And so I started making those videos and people just connected with it because they're like wow, you're showing real estate and you're showing lifestyle, and that's kind of what the whole premise was, and I just started. It took a while because YouTube's funny and you have to make stuff that's entertaining, to get people Right. But I started getting calls and people said, hey, we love that you're not just talking about real estate, you're actually showing us an idea of what it might be like to live there. That just took off. And so I started getting calls and people were like, hey, we're coming down, can you show us properties and can you show us where that restaurant was?
Speaker 2:and then so that and I would tell some of the restaurant people hey, I featured a restaurant people in the god. Thank you so much. You want you come in, we'll give you a lunch. I said, no, no, I'm just, I'm proud to represent you guys. I've been here and it's good food. And then, so there from there just started to take off. And um, just this week, a huge goal for me I just passed 20,000 subscribers. Congratulations.
Speaker 1:That's amazing.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it was a big accomplishment and my goal is to hit 30,000 by the end of the year. And then I've done some videos about some of the things that aren't popular but are very newsworthy, like the insurance, cost of insurance and condos and what's going on. And I did one about some new laws about HOAs here, and that video just kind of took off. In the past two days it's got like 175,000 views and so you know, people like a little bit. Yeah, some of the people like the drama, but I but but it's funny as I tell my wife, yes, I know those get the views and they're good, but my passion is when I can drive around or get on my bicycle and go show like, hey guys, this is the, this hotel, hotel and this is a favorite restaurant to eat, and if you buy a house, this neighborhood, and maybe you see I like doing that. Like my favorite videos aren't necessarily the most popular watch, but it's me getting on the bike and showing you florida and how I enjoy living it.
Speaker 1:Those I just they're so much fun and they have a little bit more of like a positive upbeat vibe too. So yeah, yeah I've had.
Speaker 2:I'm funny, I've had people go hey, we're going to a wedding in april, we're not looking for real estate. But we found your channel and we saw that you talked about these three hotels in del rey and um. We're checking them out and thank you so much because your video gave us more insight than anyone else could and that's cool and I featured three of the hotels in the area. I know I need to talk to those hotels about like, hey, if my wife and I get a free stay there, you know.
Speaker 1:Yeah, absolutely. You should be like let's collaborate a little bit Well, let's give you more content too.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and that's how I started it, and I just finally I got serious about it a couple of years ago, where I started to make sure I did a video every Sunday at 10 am, built an audience, and that's what I keep doing, and it has opened doors to me, for one, to being able to be doing podcasts with people that I never would have been invited to, and also it's opened the doors for bigger transactions, where I have now people that have actually reached out, because I did videos on brand new luxury condos $4 million and those people actually reached out to me and said hey, we like you, we like your style, we like how you present it. We're looking to buy in Florida and I'm like Love it.
Speaker 2:Yeah, yeah, let's go, let's go.
Speaker 1:That's awesome, yeah, so my like, looking back, my 20 year old self would have never have guessed that I would be doing this right now. So do you kind of feel that same way?
Speaker 2:Yeah, I, you know, I started 51, about 51 years old, making videos. So, not right, not your typical YouTuber, not your, mr Beast, and you know it's a lot more difficult once you start hitting that like 30, 35.
Speaker 2:And I know what taught me how to. No one taught me how to edit. I didn't know what to film, and over watching videos and joining other social groups and learning and listening, I was able to build it up and yeah, I wouldn't imagine it. But what I find cool about it is this is kind of I thought about this a year ago and I thought, yeah, it's just fun.
Speaker 2:And I realized you know, you're leaving a legacy, at least a memory for your kids, like absolutely sure some of the stuff is real estate, but there's there's over 400 videos of me now that those kids will be able, my kids will be able to look and go and show their kids and like, hey, look, there's grandpa. Like you know not that I have any grandkids yet, but you know, one of them up there the wife keeps helping. But yeah, I'm, I'm leaving a piece of me behind that, and some of the videos are definitely what we call evergreen, so you could watch them forever because there's no reason for them not to be relevant, maybe 10, 15 years from now. And so that's kind of neat knowing that that's out there, depending on what you tell, however long YouTube lasts. But it's kind of cool knowing that I'm leaving that behind so my kids will be able to see and they can point it out. Go out, look at dad.
Speaker 1:He was riding his longboard down the street holding a camera and stuff. I told my son and I so my son I don't know if you know the whole story behind Life, live and Travel. My son is actually the one who encouraged me to do all this and you know he just turned 19.
Speaker 2:So he's got that whole like young teen thing going and he's like, oh, mom, you could totally do this and I'm like, okay, I don't know what I'm doing, but let's try. I would not know that, eve, because you're great, you're a great host, you're very upbeat. That's really great to have on a podcast. You're very energetic and I have fun doing these. They are fun to do these because it's like you and I have a conversation, but we're really sharing it with the world and that's kind of cool. Absolutely, that's my favorite part.
Speaker 1:So when we were first talking about it, he's like Mom, you can do this. You go to meetings all the time you could do it. I'm like oh so, my first couple. I'm like what I'm doing? But now it's just like a natural thing. So I love that, like I'm all about pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and like going beyond what I would normally do to make myself better, you know so.
Speaker 1:I love when I find other people who are also doing the same thing, especially after 40, because I feel like once you hit 40 you're usually have already like I don't want to say this kind of peaked a little bit, like you know you, you've got your career set and all that sort of thing. So then when people actually leave that career and start something fresh and totally outside of the the norm, I just I feel strongly for that.
Speaker 2:I love that well, I mean, so I'll share with you. I haven't done anything with this yet, but what I've learned from doing the YouTube videos is that I can do it. I can do it, I can do it Awesome and I have a passion to travel more and so and I know it's it may and it may just not work because there's so many people have already done this the travel YouTuber stuff there's a million that have done it anyways. But I have an idea to do it for myself as maybe a senior citizen you absolutely should and making videos, but showing it from the perspective of someone who's some 58 now, right. So maybe I'm going to start this two years and start that perspective of traveling as a senior citizen and talk about things that are important to people in my age group and showing them the things fun places to visit, that maybe I'm not going to go to Ocean Avenue and the crazy party and all that, right, all of them good. Right, I'm still young, but maybe I show them something cooler and still interesting and fun about Florida and maybe take that and see how that goes and maybe eventually get out of Florida but start with Florida. So that's kind of a passion project that I'm thinking of doing and told my wife I would like to do this and maybe we just have to do it piece by piece.
Speaker 2:We can't full-time travel yet the fact that I'm doing the videos and I've been so comfortable making these videos, if I could take it and do it something outside of real estate and it's just about what I love, which history and food and culture and meeting different people from different parts, even Florida, even the world is exciting to me. When I went to Spain, it was amazing. I don't speak any Spanish and yet I still got a lot and talked and we laughed and, oh, you have a YouTube channel. They were, whatever they say, oh, youtube. I said, yeah, see, it was amazing. It just opened my eyes that I know that I really want to go out and embrace and learn more about the world and people and their cultures and the food, oh man.
Speaker 1:Absolutely. So I am 100% behind you. I definitely think you should. That's kind of one of the things that I'm trying to kind of do with my brand, so I've been a little bit home-blocked the last six months or so, you know, focusing on the podcast and boutique and all that thing. But I do plan on doing some more traveling towards the end of the year and in that case I'd like to be able to do, like you know, live podcasts and meet with the locals and that sort of thing, because I feel like when you actually sit down and you talk to a local, everybody is so proud of where they're from. So being able to like shine a light on that and really like allow people that platform that they can kind of speak about where they're from, what they do, that sort of thing, and I also kind of feel like it pulls everybody together too, and that's that's kind of the overall goal, so it is kind of like in the high five ball.
Speaker 2:For same, though, you know it was so cool traveling to Spain I didn't even pull my phone out except for a little bit of work that I didn't know what was going on in the world, and you forget about all the garbage that's going on in our world right now and and you just see people for people, man, and it was just. It's just a really cool thing. And I think you know you travel and I heard this from many travelers and, and Anthony Bourdain and all those people sit down and break bread with someone.
Speaker 2:You'll get to see that they're very similar to you, you know and maybe there's differences and stuff, but they're still like you, another human and uh and you, you get to learn and you eat and you just learn about other people's cultures and it's a pretty cool thing, and so that's kind of what my goal for my wife and I is is to get out and worry out. We are doing some traveling, hopefully next March. We're doing it through the school where the students get to travel, and then they say yeah, so we did.
Speaker 2:That's how we went to Spain. And then the next bucket item my son's already gone, but we're gonna be looking to go into austria, germany and switzerland. Uh, we're looking forward to doing that and trying some good, good beer in germany. That's like one of the tour guides is like paul, you got to come, man, there's like the best beer in the world. I said he's a, he's a funny guy. Uh, one of the teachers that helped chaperones in him and I hit it off when we were in spain. But yeah, it's fun. Yeah, I commend you. This is cool what you're doing. I like talking about the places. Florida's great. If you guys are listening and ever want to come down. Look Delray Beach up. There's various price points for the hotels. You've got your Marriott's. You've got your Opal, which is the Opal Grand, right on the beach. Probably going to be the most expensive, especially in the winter, but it's beautiful.
Speaker 1:That's more of like the luxury type hotel.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you walk right across and you're right there at the beach.
Speaker 2:Their pool's amazing. They have great restaurants in there as well. And then you've got like the Ray Hotel, which is sort of a boutique-ish hotel very close to the avenue, and then you've got your regular like Marriott's and stuff that are reasonably priced, but still all the restaurants are right down the street. Yeah, I always look at hotels, like, look, we're just staying here to sleep and eat and I don't necessarily need the top line hotel. I want to go and put the money on all the restaurants and the bars and shopping. It depends on what you like. But it's there. There's a lot of. There's still a lot of airbnbs. Um, they do get booked up pretty quickly though.
Speaker 2:Like, if you're looking, I would look now. Uh, because winter in south florida, is it? I mean it's funny. Like my office is there and I can drive. Uh, when I get to, usually I take a side road. Let's get to my office, but if I want to drive down atlantic avenue of all the restaurants, just just see what's going on summer, I can drive down no problem to get to the stoplight. In the winter I don't even come near it. I turn before I get that road, I take a left and go to the next road and go outside, because I would be stuck on that road for 30 minutes because it's bumper to bumper, cars and people everywhere. So if you are going, to come yeah, get your book your Airbnb now.
Speaker 2:Look at the Airbnbs to get it now, because they will be full, Everyone's already booking them up and there's a lot of hotels. And we're close to we're 45 minutes from Fort Lauderdale International Airport probably with a good day and about 20 minutes from Palm Beach, pbia Palm Beach International Airport. So, depending on where you're flying in, you're not too far from either one of them. And for Miami, if you do Miami, it's probably an hour and a half drive. Traffic's pretty heavy in Miami, especially in the winter. It's just gotten more and more crowded. So give yourself an hour and a half to drive up here.
Speaker 1:That makes sense. Yeah, Miami, we went a couple of times down. We've gone down there a few times like girls trips and that sort of thing, and I feel like every single time I go down there it's busier than it was the last time. I'm like there's no way that everybody knows that I'm here and that's why they're all here at the same time.
Speaker 2:But miami is. Yeah, miami's crazy, it's like it's his own. Find something to do. I mean, it lets you go there all the time. Like for someone like me, you always find something new and exciting, like I've went to go down there and I parked at this bridge uh, I'm just a parking garage. And the parking garage.
Speaker 2:When I got back from the boat show I had some time, traffic was bad, so I knew I wasn't going to go anywhere, right? So I knew I wasn't going to move. So I just said I'm just going to walk around. So I went upstairs and on the top of the parking garage were these sort of an old car with a flower pots on it and little shacks. And then on one shack it said concession stand. Another shack they're painted really bright colors, said a bar, and I was like what is this place? And it had seats and it was on the rooftop and you could look at the water one way and downtown Miami the other. And then I realized that someone said we're closed. I said, oh, I'm sorry, I go.
Speaker 2:What is this place? He goes we're a movie theater. It was an outdoor movie theater, so you had the concession stand, the bar, everyone to mingle, and then, when you walked over to the edge, they had like chairs, like an outdoor wedding right, had all the chairs set up and they have a screen and they play movies under the stars. There's nothing above you but the sky and I thought, oh my God, this is the coolest place, like I would love to take my wife there for a date, like just to go to miami see a movie there. It was just so cool. So mine, that sounds awesome, miami has those kind of cool things and it is a neat to go. So yeah, I did.
Speaker 1:You're right, it's always crowded down there but it's close enough to that where you could actually like split your trip. So if you're going for a week, you can hang out three days in delray, a couple days in miami, oh, absolutely the food, get a little, make sure of everything, everything you can have, from cheap to roadside to $300, $500 dinner, whatever.
Speaker 2:Yeah, they have it all in Miami. You know that. And it's got all the entertainment and anything and everything that you could want to see down there.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and great for people watching as well.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, lots of people watching. Yeah, yeah, definitely yes, young, young people down there watching.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, definitely, yes, young, young people down there. So what's the most unusual property that you've ever shown to somebody that they've bought? Was there anything like castles or anything cool out there that you might?
Speaker 2:have sold. Well, you're hitting me with one uh, no right I haven't had that yet. Most of it just been regular places, know homes and condos and nothing unusual. I mean, I sold one house that had like a secret doors and you opened it up and went into another room, which is kind of crazy. But I mean, no, nothing cool like you see on TV. Not yet All right, there's hope, nothing like that.
Speaker 1:We'll get there.
Speaker 2:Yeah yeah, nothing like that, we'll get there. Yeah, yeah, you know, the only cool sort of thing, crazy thing, I would say, it almost happened because of my YouTube channel. Right after COVID, I had a guy who reached out to me from California and after looking him up he was a famous producer, oh, and he'd done TV commercials, like very well-known TV commercials, like people would know, and he's a famous guy. And he was like he goes, I like that. You do these videos. You're a unique realtor.
Speaker 2:Unfortunately, he went a little north of Palm Beach County, went up the beach a little, which I could have helped him. But he found a realtor up there and he bought a house on the beach that he tore down and put a new one up. So I was like ah, yeah, yeah, or to the lock, that was a, but it was cool, like he. When I looked him up he was a pretty big deal, pretty big, very well known producer for making these famous commercials for businesses and awesome and stuff and I thought that was kind of cool that he found me and reached out, absolutely so yeah so do you see a lot of business coming from the youtube channel?
Speaker 2:uh, I get a pretty good amount of it. It's slowed down a little because of where we're at in this market right now and a lot of buyers, I think right, go about buying and stuff. But, yeah, it's opened the doors to luxury business for me. It has to fit with the audience. Uh, you can't just go for the paycheck from them, because it doesn't work. The audience to be like why are you advertising this? And then I've had some, some other opportunities for some things that are it's still in the works. But, uh, there might be an opportunity for me to be on tv, which is exciting, exciting. Yeah, so that's, we're still it's, they're still working on it, but the fact that they reached out to me was super exciting. So, who knows, uh, you may see me on the big tv or something one day I can't wait I remember that guy, I know that guy, yeah, that guy, that guy, it's.

Speaker 2:Yeah, but yeah, it's fun, it's pretty cool. Yeah, real estate is an interesting business for sure, but I've been pretty fortunate to have pretty normal clients and nothing too crazy.

Speaker 1:Absolutely, I need to know all the things. I love this crazy house and I got this crazy. Absolutely I need to know all the things I love hearing about those kind of. So we actually, um, one of my friends we were friends like way back in the day when we were children uh, her dad just bought a house and it's a castle and I had no idea that there was a castle in missouri ever. Wow, I actually got to go and kind of like walk through it and was like, oh my god, this is like the biggest house I've ever seen in my life. So I didn't know if there was anything like that out there. They're down here.
Speaker 2:No, there's, there's some homes down here that are, yeah, I I've seen a couple listings that are just like jaw-dropping crazy but uh, but unless you get in with, like the brokers open, it's, it's you know, they the you can imagine the owners don't want a bunch of people just walking through those, right, yeah, but I've gone to a couple broker opens where it is open and because I'm a realtor, I could walk in. It's kind of funny. You walk in. It's like you look in another, like do you have someone that has $50 million? Paul said not really. I just I don't, I just wanted to see your $50 million house.
Speaker 1:That's the perk of being a real estate agent. Right there, you get to go and see all the cool things.
Speaker 2:We go and see some of them. But I said, hey, I don't have a client, I just wanted to see your house. I wish I had one. But he goes oh, go ahead, it's open, go look at it. So some crazy homes, that's so cool.
Speaker 1:What does paradise mean to you? This is kind of like how I always my very last question of the day.
Speaker 2:What does paradise mean to? Ray is definitely it, but what is it about it that makes it paradise so great question, because at the end of all my videos I tell people wherever you are, get out, enjoy your paradise. Paradise doesn't have to be a beach, it doesn't.
Speaker 2:Paradise can be what you make of it. If you live in the Midwest somewhere and you can find what you love about where you live, make it your paradise, Make it the place that brings you happiness, whether you're spouse, single, whatever. That place that you can get out and just enjoy living. That's kind of what paradise is to me.
Speaker 2:So, you know that might be for some people they love. I have a friend who lives in Colorado. Her paradise is skiing and snowboarding all the time that's paradise to her and going on mountain hiking trails with her dog and everything and it's beautiful and we love that. So I think paradise is just you making the best of finding what's beautiful and fun about where you live and getting out and just sometimes just saying to the world and all the headaches and the work and all the negativity and just chill out and look around and go hey, this is pretty cool, this is, look where I live, this is amazing and I'm gonna enjoy the best out of it yeah, and being a tourist in your own city is is a lot of fun too yeah I mean, you have the arch here and that's about it.
Speaker 2:But I want to see the arch. It's so cool. You guys get some barbecue and some good ribs in there, right?
Speaker 1:Oh, we definitely have good food. Gooey butter cake.
Speaker 2:I've watched you two do tours of your town.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's funny because I would never have assumed that. So I've seen videos and people are like, oh, I'm so excited to go to St Louis and I'm like, why I haven't? I've seen videos and people are like, oh, I'm so excited to go to St Louis.
Speaker 2:I'm like why I drove through there when I was very little. I remember seeing the arches as a little kid like four. I would love to go up it. I have to get up there one day. You got some great food there.
Speaker 1:It is a neat experience. Definitely, if you haven't had toasted ravioli or gooey butter cake, by all means try it.
Speaker 2:They're both amazing. Okay, you went so off, off the camera. You're gonna have to send me an instant like something about what the gooey butter cake is absolutely. You're gonna love it, so yeah it's fun, fun to do what I do and the the videos. Let me have a little fun with my job and make it more enjoyable than just work, and I love sharing what's, what's beautiful about the, the place I live in with, with the world and stuff.

They didn't use me, which I wish they had, but the fact that they said we watched your video and moved to Florida is like Because is like that because of you. Yeah, like, wow, that makes my day so, but and uh, but yeah, thanks for having me. B this is fun. What a great energy you have and what a what a cool podcast.
