What does the Bible actually teach about demons? Are our modern assumptions rooted in Scripture, or in later tradition?
In Episode 7 of the Who Is The Enemy? series, Timothy Cappetto explores the biblical and Second Temple Jewish understanding of demons by examining key Old Testament passages alongside the book of 1 Enoch as historical background. Drawing from Dr. Michael Heiser's research, this episode discusses the Hebrew terms for demons, the rebellion of the Watchers in Genesis 6, and why many Jewish writers connected the origin of demons to the Nephilim and their offspring.
This episode also examines how passages in 2 Peter and Jude relate to these ancient traditions while emphasizing an important distinction: 1 Enoch is not treated as Scripture but as a valuable historical resource for understanding the worldview of the biblical authors. Ultimately, this study points listeners back to the authority of God's Word and reminds believers that while the powers of darkness are real, Yahweh alone is sovereign, and our allegiance belongs to Jesus Christ.
