Welcome my kings and queens to another thought provoking episode of Flow With Floyd. I'm your host. Today we're going to dive into the most rewarding investment that you will ever make. Not in stocks, not in real estate or business, but in yourself. You are your greatest asset and nurturing that potential is the key to unlocking the life that you want to live. And I'm going to share with you why self investment matters and recommend the areas in life that you should focus on and give you some practical strategies. So grab your favorite drink, sit back, relax, chill, and let's follow the flow.
Now, when we think about the concept of greatest assets, I want you to think of yourself as a prime piece of beachfront property, rare, valuable, and full of potential. And just like that beachfront property, your worth is inherent, but developing, maintaining, and enhancing it requires consistent care and investment. Beachfront properties need to upkeep to preserve their appeal while being flexible and the same holds true for your personal and your professional life. Invest in yourself by continually upgrading your features, your skills, your knowledge and your mindset. millions of customers, upgrade their iPhones because they want the latest and the greatest features. If you have the mindset and skills from five years ago, it is time for you to upgrade. The word upgrade means to strengthen your foundation by prioritizing your values, character and overall well-being. The more attention you give to self-improvement, the more you'll attract opportunities and relationships that recognize your unique value.
Now then, I want you to also think about your mind as a thriving garden. The more you care and focus you dedicate to it, the more it blooms, producing beauty and abundance. But garden requires careful planning, regular nurturing and protecting itself from the weeds. Your cultivated mind flourishes when fed, when enriching experiences, learning and self-reflection. But just like any garden, it must be maintained or guarded against the weeds of negativity, distraction and disruptions that come into our lives. You know, just as Oprah Winfrey said, your energy is your currency. You take care of it. And you take care of it by tending to yourself like you are priceless property, and cultivating your mind as a vibrant garden to ensure growth, flexibility, and the ability to shine in any environment. Investing in yourself is one of the most impactful choices you can make in life. I mean, the benefits alone of self-investment are far-reaching, touching every aspect of your personal and your professional life. Now, though it requires time, effort, and often resources, the return on this investment, they earn value.
For when you invest in yourself, you increase your confidence. And when you increase your confidence, you broaden your skills and you open doors to opportunities that bring growth and fulfillment. Each step you take towards personal development strengthens your belief in your potential and it sets the foundation for lasting success. There's nothing more intimidating about it than a man or woman with confidence, not arrogance, but it's something about their aura.
They say Michael Jordan was one of the most intimidating basketball players to play the game. Not solely because of his skills and his talents, but because of his confidence. You ever seen Michelle Obama walk into a room? She commands attention. Now conversely, if you don't invest in yourself, you're neglecting your personal growth and wellbeing. You avoid opportunities to learn, to grow, to improve.
You start ignoring the signs of physical and mental health needs because you're more comfortable in your comfort zone. And you find yourself wasting time on unproductive activities. All along, you're fellow to see, or to set, purposeful meaningful goals in your life.
We live in a very competitive world that is constantly changing and staying relevant requires continuous learning, being adaptable to learning new skills, and having a proactive approach to both personal and professional growth and development. Embracing change and striving to improve ensures that you remain equipped to face life challenges and seize opportunities. The first area of life that you should invest in your continuous education and skill development. Now by expanding your knowledge and enhancing your abilities, you build a strong foundation for growth, open doors for new opportunities, and give yourself the chance to adapt in this ever-changing world. Right now, let's look at the world is being captivated by AI, artificial intelligence.
I'm not sure about how you feel about it, but I'm here to let you know that AI is here to stay. And if you're not willing to learn how AI can be used to enhance your work, streamline processes, or open new opportunities, you're at risk for falling behind this rapidly changing world. Embracing AI is not just about keeping up with it. It's about leveraging its potential to innovate, to grow, and stay competitive.
Because remember, the world is always changing.
Now, if there are two areas in life where we struggle, that is when it comes to our physical and mental health. America is one of the most unhealthy countries in the world. We have the highest rates of obesity, chronic diseases, and lifestyle related health issues. Mental health in America is a significant and growing problem. There are millions of people across this country who experience mental health challenges on a daily basis, ranging from anxiety and depression to more severe conditions like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. You know, nearly one in five adults in the United States experience a mental illness each year.
Anxiety disorders are the most common and it affects then about 20 % of the population. Depression is the leading cause of disability and it affects about 8.4 % of Americans. Then you look at our suicide rates. They continue to rise year over year with suicide now being the leading cause of death for individuals between the of 10 and 34. Many individuals avoid seeking help due to the stigma that's surrounding mental health. And it's especially true within the black community, where our cultural, historical, and systemic factors often discourage open conversations about our mental well-being. In many cases, mental health challenges are perceived as a sign of being weak or dismissed altogether.
But I'm here to tell you that balancing the demands of life can make it challenging to prioritize your health, physical exercise, nutrition, and rest. At the same time, while managing stress, anxiety, and emotional wellbeing, these struggles can create a cycle where neglecting one area affects the other. But by acknowledging that these challenges and taking the small steps towards improvement, we can build a healthier more resilient foundation for overall well-being.
The third area you should invest in is relationships and networking. Years ago, I met a mentor at a networking event who gave me advice that shifted my perspective entirely. He told me that the key to networking is looking for people who are looking for you. Now, this profound statement is about seeking meaningful connections with those who align with your purpose, your values, and your aspirations. It talks about a desire to find individuals who resonate with your journey and who are also seeking the same type of energy, support, and companionship that you offer. Now, in its purest sense, a relationship is nothing more than a connection between two individuals. It is built on mutual respect, understanding, trust, and care. It is a bond where people share their thoughts, emotions, and experiences openly. They offer support and acceptance without judgment. Now this approach is not about just searching for connections. It's about attracting and being open to the right relationships, whether it's friendships, collaborations, mentorships, or personal. By staying authentic and purposeful in your pursuits, you naturally draw those who align with your path. I mean, think of it this way. Think of a relationship as mutual investments. The more you pour into them, the more they grow.
The fourth area in our life that we need to invest in is our time and our habits. Time is our most valuable commodity. Unlike money or material possessions, it cannot be earned back or replaced once it's gone. How we choose to spend our lives shapes our lives, our relationships, and our successes. Investing time wisely ensures that we make the most of this finite and irreplaceable resources. In our hectic world, it can feel nearly impossible to find the time to do everything we need, let alone what we want. Yet we are all given the same 24 hours in a day, the same number of days in a week, and the same number of weeks in a year to shape our lives and our destiny. The difference lies in how we choose to prioritize and manage our time. By focusing on what truly matters and aligning our actions with our values and goals, we can make the most out of every moment creating a life that is both fulfilling and rewarding.
Now carving out time is one thing, but making it a habit is something entirely different. Finding the time to start an activity is a first step, but turning it into consistent practice requires discipline, intentionality, and repetition. Habits are built by prioritizing small, manageable actions and incorporate them into your daily routine until they become second nature. It's not about setting time. It's not also about just setting time aside, but we create a system that supports your commitment, such as setting reminders, tracking your progress, or connecting the habit to an existing routine. Over time, these small efforts compound, leading to a lasting change and significant growth.
Now it is often said that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit, but in reality the time required can depend upon the individual and the habit itself. While 21 days may be a helpful starting point, research suggests that developing a new habit can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days. But the key is consistency. Repeating the behavior daily and staying committed even when it feels challenging.
Remember, these small incremental changes paired with a clear goals and motivation can help solidify these habits over time. Remember, the focus should be on progress rather than perfection. As true habits form, it is about creating long lasting, not just meeting a specific deadline.
Now there are four strategies that I recommend when trying to maximize a return on your self-investment. First, start small. Stay consistent. The key to building lasting habits and achieving long-term goals is to begin with small, manageable steps and focusing on staying consistent. Starting small reduces the feelings of being overwhelmed and it makes the process feel more achievable while consistency builds momentum and reinforces the behavior over time. For example, instead of committing to an hour long workout every day, start with 10, 15 minutes and gradually increase as it becomes a part of your daily routine. Likewise, if you are interested in learning a new skill, dedicate just a few minutes a day rather than trying to master it all at once. By focusing on steady incremental progress,
You create a sustainable foundation for success and turn those small actions into powerful habits that drive meaningful change in your life. The second thing you need to do is you need to track your growth. Monitoring your progress is a powerful way to stay motivated on track towards your goal. By keeping a record of your efforts, whether it's through a journal, app, or a simple checklist, you can see how far you've come. And you can also identify the areas where you can improve.
Tracking growth not only provides a sense of accomplishment, but it also helps you recognize patterns, celebrate milestones, and adjust your strategies as needed. It transforms vague intentions into tangible results, making your journey towards your personal or professional development more intentional and rewarding. Remember, what gets measured gets improved. So take the time to track your growth and stay committed to your path.
The third thing you need to do, you need to surround yourself with growth oriented people. The people you surround yourself with will have a powerful impact on your mindset, your motivation, and ultimately your success. By choosing to spend time with people who are growth oriented, those who inspire, challenge, and support, you can create an environment that foster positive learning and progress. These individuals can help you can provide you with valuable insights, holding you accountable and encouraging you to strive for goals even when the journey gets tough. Through their ambition and their resilience, it can reunite your own drive, making personal growth a shared and rewarding experience. Remember, growth is contagious. Surrounding yourself with the right people can not only elevate your mindset, but also your potential to achieve greatness.
And the fourth thing you need to do is to be patient with the process. This is essential for personal development as meaningful change takes time and it cannot be rushed. Set realistic expectation helps you focus on small consistent improvements rather than the instant results. Embrace the journey. It allows you to celebrate each step going forward. Even if progress feels slow. Practice and gratitude helps you acknowledge how far you come instead of only focusing on how far you still have to go. Trust in the time it reminds you that the right opportunity and the breakthroughs will come when you're ready. By focusing on the process rather than the outcome, you can build habits that lead to sustainable growth. It is also important for you to learn to rest when needed rather than quitting. As rest is necessary part of our journey.
Surround yourself with inspiring stories and people who can keep you motivated, remind you that progress takes time. Patience is about maintaining effort and focusing while trusting that the results will come in due time.
