Wrestling Matches, Playing Live When Others Don't and Vitamin Store Encounters :: Ep 46 Try That in a Small Town Podcast
Ever wondered which artists actually *play* their instruments on award shows? There are ways you can spot who's faking it by their impractical outfits - "long leather coats and scarves and things that you could never play live in." This episode pulls back the curtain on the music industry with hilarious candor and insider perspectives you won't hear anywhere else.
The podcast kicks off with a story that defies belief - a seemingly innocent trip to a vitamin store turns into an awkward invitation to "wrestle" in someone's basement. This laugh-out-loud encounter sets the tone for an episode filled with authentic, unfiltered stories from the road. The genuine chemistry between the hosts creates moments of spontaneous humor that will have you feeling like you're sitting in on a conversation with old friends.
From performing at American Idol during its peak viewership to early days playing outside Vegas casinos when "no one even knows what they're listening to," the band's journey is shared through vivid storytelling that captures both the glamour and grind of the music industry. Their preference for bus travel over flying, despite longer journey times, offers a glimpse into the realities of touring life and what keeps them grounded.
The conversation takes unexpected turns, including an embarrassing misidentification of a neighborhood pipeline as the famous Keystone Pipeline and thoughtful reflections on the importance of respecting democratic processes regardless of political affiliations. With each story, listeners gain deeper insight into the personalities behind the music and the authentic relationships that sustain long-term success in the entertainment industry.

He said me and my buddy have been doing something and it's really cut into our cardio. We're cutting calories like crazy. And he said it's really great. I said what are you guys doing? He goes well, we're wrestling.
Speaker 2:No he didn't Dude.
Speaker 3:I mean, you honestly can't make this up. Okay, so go.
Speaker 1:I said, oh, wrestling, yeah, I did that when I was in junior high, wasn't that great. But he goes. No, my full basement is full on wrestling pads. There's no furniture, it's just wrestling pads With mud, with oil. Maybe oils, I don't know.
Speaker 4:I do need to ask you this because I think it's serious. Okay, cobb's getting serious. Uh-oh, I'm going to send you an email later tonight. You do need to report to me five things you've done in the last week. Okay, why are people getting mad about that?
Speaker 5:anyway, the first thing we do at award shows is go find the list of people playing live. It is. We know who it's going to be. It's us. It's Miranda Landry. Miranda, always, her band always plays live you know Stapleton, you can always tell who's not playing live. Easy to tell. I can pick that off Because they're dressed in long leather coats and scarves and things that you could never play live in.
Speaker 3:The Try that in a Small Town podcast begins now begins now.
Speaker 4:Here we are, another episode of the Try that in a Small Town podcast episode. Woo, we love it. Hey, we're coming to you from the Patriot Mobile Studios. Still sounds good. It still sounds great. Yeah, it does. Are they still sponsoring this?
Speaker 1:Yeah, Believe it or not, there's a small sign behind you there.
Speaker 4:Yeah, see, you can't see that I know, but believe me, we're thrilled to have him.
Speaker 3:We got Neil calling you first name, again it's.
Speaker 4:Neil Kelly Brother Neil Tully. Wow, and I feel like I insulted Ed and I didn't mean to do that. No, you didn't. He's tough. He is tough, actually, has he's trying to come up with a good nickname for me, and god bless him.
Speaker 5:And I saw a new one, mc. I saw that too. I don't know, man, we're struggling.
Speaker 4:You guys got to get with ed, so so kurt does have a couple nicknames. I do, actually I have a nickname.
Speaker 5:You have a lot of nicknames. What is it?
Speaker 4:well, here's the thing about nicknames.
Speaker 5:They may not make sense. One of them is just called Corn because he's from Iowa, so forever we'll call him Corn, and that's pretty common on the road. Aldean would be like hey, where's Corn? I like Corn. We'll be like I don't know, he's on the bus or he's pouring drinks.
Speaker 4:Most people like Corn, a lot of carbs, and then another unfortunate one.
Speaker 5:No, now his other one wait a minute. I don't think Caleb would say that.
Speaker 4:I like corn, corn's good.
Speaker 2:A lot of carbs, he said.
Speaker 1:It's not the most healthy vegetable, but it's very colorful.
Speaker 5:Is it a vegetable?
Speaker 4:It is isn't it, corn? Yeah, it's just not. It's not a fruit?
Speaker 1:No, it's not. It's not that nutritious, I think.
Speaker 4:But don't any of you say you don't like corn.
Speaker 2:I love it for you. I love it for your name. I do Corn on the cob.
Speaker 4:Do you guys eat corn?
Speaker 5:on the cob oh it's amazing Sweet corn we just call you Cobb Really?
Speaker 3:Cobb, I like Cobb. There it is, cobb.
Speaker 2:And that's how nicknames start. That's how nicknames start.
Speaker 4:Cobb ain't bad I mean it's better than my other nickname.
Speaker 5:And Ed. If you're listening, ed, which I hope you are, I'm sure you are get out there and recruit man. Ed's recruiting. I promise you the Ed Army.
Speaker 4:Ed. I'll say this about Ed he leaves us the best comments reviews. He is always on it. He goes through the whole episode, what he likes, maybe what he didn't like. Yeah, he's fantastic. We encourage everybody to do that seriously, like subscribe. Sometimes I forget to say that. Go to youtube, make sure you do that. Leave us a five-star review. We'll do like the brothers hunt do. You can trash us all you want, just do five stars, we'll read it on the air yeah, follow us on the socials.
Speaker 4:We're trying to get that x account going. People follow us, let's go bring it kaylo.
Speaker 2:How can? How was your day, it was okay a little lengthy tell us about it lengthy.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I mean, it's lengthy just as far as the drive goes tell us about your co-write today. Uh, oh you had a co-write, yeah, yeah, it was fine Now. These are great stories because people don't understand.
Speaker 5:For every song you might hear on an album or streaming or on the radio, there's a million other days where they're just not great. So, Kalo, did you have a great day? Was it a great day?
Speaker 1:Well, it actually started on Tuesday. It actually started on Friday.
Speaker 4:Oh, hold on. Your day-to-day started on Friday, no just a little evolution of what took place started on Friday.
Speaker 1:And it just continued over and you think well, it's just one day, right.
Speaker 3:That's kind of carried over Some of this is inside.
Speaker 1:So if you live in a certain part of town, you know in nashville, and and you've had, say, a certain amount of success, you don't feel like you need to be driving 50 minutes to your co-writer you know um you want to come out of your bubble, yeah, but anyway, but you're, you know, you're still, you know, trying to write with everybody and and be a pleaser I'm a pleaser by nature, you know and I'm with a new publisher and Red Street Music Publishing Jada Marcus, kelly King, amanda Rich.
Speaker 5:I talked to Jay about this. By the way, How'd you draw Lorde Shout out?
Speaker 1:But anyway, but you go to, you know you get to the right and I looked on my book and I knew the names, you know. I thought hey, say that he won't do it, but anyway, you know one of them it was a couple artists and another writer.
Speaker 5:To the artists are they? This is important today.
Speaker 4:Well, I think he's going to get to what your question is going to be.
Speaker 5:Well, no, no, I'm going to ask, but seriously, are the artists that have been at radio?
Speaker 1:uh-huh, okay, one one ass, dual, dual artist, right? Yeah, well, you know you have artists of different levels. You know that have stuff out there that are doing you know they're all writing together.
Speaker 2:Now everybody's just one happy co-write but anyway.
Speaker 1:So so I, I went ahead when I drove, okay, and and I thought you know what I'll do it, it looks good on the book. And uh, I drove out there I was thinking about ideas, but when I got there and I was, you know, complimentary, I said well, I said we obviously got enough talent in the room. So my question is who are we writing for?
Speaker 1:and he just kind of looked at me and said what do you mean? He said we got two artists. You both got record deals and you're not a duo. Who are we? We're writing for you, or you? Can you please tell me who they?
Speaker 5:are.
Speaker 1:No, Come on.
Speaker 5:Caleb, don't be rude. No, he's not going to do it, he's not going to do it.
Speaker 4:What did they say?
Speaker 5:to this what songs have they sung?
Speaker 1:Then the first one said oh man, hoss, I just dropped a record in January, oh no. And the other guy said yeah, I just released mine. This is like two weeks ago. And I said so why are we here?
Speaker 4:Did you really say that? And they said oh man we can just write something and I'm like yeah let's just write something for fun, that rhymes you know Now you gotta explain to people, because if you don't have a target that you just, it's hard to write like that.
Speaker 1:Well, the thing is it's a blessing if you get in the room with artists. The thing is, if they just released records, it's going to be a minimum of a year before they even start recording, oh minimum. So whatever we write that day, even if it's great, it'll be completely forgotten about by the time they come around again.
Speaker 2:And they won't sing the demo.
Speaker 1:So, just as a straight-up writer, you're like today is somewhat meaningless.
Speaker 5:It was you two artists of unknown name and, dare I say, someone doing a track.
Speaker 1:Yeah, okay, yeah, but the track person was really good and the song was really good. It really was. It was just where's it going.
Speaker 5:What's the track guy's name? It wasn't a track guy.
Speaker 1:It was a track girl. What's her name? I'm not going to tell you. She's really good, though who is it?
Speaker 2:I'm not going to tell you she's really good. Give her a shout out.
Speaker 4:No she's great. Give her a shout out. She's great. But your point to all this is a song is now in purgatory.
Speaker 1:It's floating Most likely, now it, and then you have to build yourself up on the way back home.
Speaker 2:It's like a short uh hour and a half drive. You're only going 20 miles. Um, but to get back home, thinking well we that's.
Speaker 1:That's a good song, well, and so it happened again yesterday, and today.
Speaker 2:Well, monday, that that was monday.
Speaker 1:Friday was the exact same wrote with a duo that I've been trying to write with for a couple years and I did get. I'd got in with them and, uh, right after they had put the record out, and great guys, great guys, and that was fun too. So I got to meet them and now I do think you have to explain, because people say oh you're, you get to write songs, that's great.
Speaker 4:But this is a business for us and you do need to have a strategy on every right yeah for us. And you do need to have a strategy on every right yeah. So you're hoping when you're going to a right, especially with an artist hey, we got an album coming out in six months. We're, this is what we're shooting for. Yeah, it's really hard for songwriters just to be like let's just write a song and I don't know, let's just see what ends up with it. It's just really hard to get a song cut like that. This is our business, that's how we make money. To just say I don't know.
Speaker 1:It's frustrating, yeah, and it's much more exciting for the whole room. If somebody says hey, man, we're going in, we're going to cut three more things in two weeks, then ever the whole room is like this is great, this is a great opportunity. So I'm going to look and find the best ideas possible. But when you know that they're not going in for a year and a half, the first thing I did is I just thought well, that ain't going to be my idea. Yeah, I'm not pitching one.
Speaker 3:Same scenario. I'm not pitching Now. I'll try my best with their idea and it did.
Speaker 1:It worked out great. But you're not going to burn one because not going to get recorded.
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:By that, by those that act.
Speaker 4:Right Interesting weekend you've had.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, so just kind of spilled over a lot of driving. I forgot, I actually forgot when did you drive?
Speaker 4:to or can you give that?
Speaker 1:away Today. One was Sylvan park, and one was. Franklin on Friday. That was that was. And one was Franklin on Friday. That was easier. At least you're close to home. At least your failure was close to home.
Speaker 4:And then West Nashville and then East Nashville, East Nashville, Neil, you said what a coffee shop it reminded me of right before we went on, like sometimes we have well, actually we never have bullet points of what to talk about. And I was saying has anybody got something we want to start with? And Neil's like who cares, let's just talk, it ain't live. No, and it actually reminded me of a great story. Tully, you want to tell the story?
Speaker 5:What year was this? Oh, I'm bad at that game. I'm going to say 2012. I think it's somewhere near there. So we were doing um american idol when it was at its height. So we were doing don't you want to stay with kelly clarkson, right, yeah, yeah, huge song, really big moment, because I think the viewership on that show was insane. It was like 70 million a week or some crazy ridiculous.
Speaker 5:So we play live, live, and I don't think people realize that a lot of times a lot of bands on tv don't play live. We've always played live, you're right most people might not realize. They don't realize that they this you know, most bands are miming or faking yeah, it's, it's a track, yeah yeah, yeah.
Speaker 5:So we get up there and you read, check, and then I remember this very it's very funny to me because we'd sound check and this is a big moment. And then we go to the green room, our dressing room, for like five hours it feels like Rich Redman, our fantastic drummer, falls asleep, takes a nap. We go out and all of a sudden it's like rush, you're rushed. So you go out 10 minutes to Aldine. We go out and all of a sudden it's like rush, you're rushed. So you go out 10 minutes to LD. And so we run out there and we're checking our amps and they're in commercial break. So they're in commercial break, got a minute 30. It's counting down and and Jack's amp, our second guitar player, it isn't working, there's nothing coming out of his amp and our tour manager at the time, tim mccormick god rest his soul goes ah jack, don't worry about it, there's a tape delay.
Speaker 5:It's not live live, it's a tape delay.
Speaker 4:We're like okay, cool yeah, it's live to tape, which for people in the you know, not in the industry it means you're recording in basic live form but it's going out later that night so he goes. Don't worry, it's live to tape and they're going a minute 30 seconds we're like, okay, cool, you know whatever.
Speaker 5:And jack's like, oh fine. And all of a sudden like, and we heard that sound of jack's amp. And then they count down five, four and we start playing and we're like, oh, that's cool, thank god, you know good, jack's amp came on, we'd have. Thank god, you know, it's good, jack sam came on, we'd have to stop, you know. And so we play the performance. It was great. We get off stage and our phones are blowing up. You guys killed it, you did great.
Speaker 4:And we're like wait a minute yeah it was live, live and we were just kind of sitting around going, oh it's okay, if they count down, we'll be fine, we'll you know, they'll have to stop.
Speaker 5:Yeah, we're like, well, if it doesn't work, we'll just say no, stop. I know, you know. So our tour manager was like ah, don't worry, it's live to take. That's funny, it was, and we're like messing with Jack Sam or trying to get it to work and it would have been you think Jim's, we think we're live right now and Jim's been all right.
Speaker 2:There's Jim I can share.
Speaker 4:Speaking of playing the tracks like, I don't think people realize that, either on award shows or whatever, I mean we've 99.9% always played live. You know Jason wants it. Most people don't most people don't most people don't and it's, you know, I I don't know, I just I think it's.
Speaker 2:I think it's interesting because it's a security blanket for most yeah, and really I mean honestly it's that. I mean I get it. If you don't, I get that well.
Speaker 5:What they don't realize, though, is is when you don't play live, you're generally playing to like a track that's been pretty well manipulated to be close to perfect, and so when, when, when your artist is singing to it, you know they're singing live and you're in the band's faking to an almost perfect track, and so there's no live feel for the artist.
Speaker 2:I wonder if there's any country artist that have had a Milli Vanilli moment where he got stuck. Has that ever happened to a country? Act that?
Speaker 4:y'all know of. No, I don't know. It's a good question, but it's funny. When the Milli Vanilli thing came out that was like unheard of. Oh, there was a track and it was like it's actually really is.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and when you, when you guys play light like a televised thing, it's, it's gotta be different than when you're on the road and you've got all your stuff and it's all your guys so.
Speaker 4:so producers of the show push most acts to do it to a track because it's a fail-safe. It's always going well and time.
Speaker 1:Yeah, it's exactly on time.
Speaker 4:You're not going to have our American Idol moments where, oh my God, it doesn't work. So they kind of push them, but Jason and the management, to their credit, have always said no, we're playing live, that's our thing.
Speaker 5:well, it makes it's, it's makes jason more comfortable, and it's also live music and all its beautiful imperfections, along with with a live vocal. So the first thing we do at award shows is go find the list of people playing live. It is, and we always, we always know, we know who it's going to be.
Speaker 4:It's us, it's miranda miranda always, her band always plays live.
Speaker 5:You know stapleton, you know plays live. Yeah, you know like, and you know who's not going to play live. You can you know before you're getting there. So it's it. That's always kind of a sweet moment, yeah, and I love it because you see the guys not playing live and they're dressed. You can always tell who's not playing live Easy to tell. I can pick that off, cause they're dressed in like in like long leather coats and scarves and things that you could never play live in. Yeah, you know what I mean. So it's, it's always fun and then they'll and then we have a good time later. Kind of trolling the Instagram posts when, when. Kind of trolling the Instagram posts when, when the other players are like playing the awards tonight and we're like no, you're not, you know who you are. You know who you are. Uh, I don't have any problem saying that either.
Speaker 5:I mean it's not but to their credit though, it's not the players call no, that's what I'm saying.
Speaker 4:They get brushed by producers producers, really because they want a show that's tightly run.
Speaker 5:But it is a player's call when they post playing the awards tonight. Not so fast Playing the awards, but you can always tell they got a scarf and a long coat and some sort of crazy hat over their eyes and gloves on.
Speaker 3:Yeah, gloves.
Speaker 5:Playing guitars with gloves on gloves hey funny story about gloves though it's reminiscing night here, uh, 2004.
Speaker 4:we're out in vegas. You're good at that game, like who at our age is good at that.
Speaker 5:I don't know how you do it, I because I, because my life is chapters and I remember certain chapters, a lot of chapters. He's got a tattoo on his forearm, he's got his whole, yeah we got a playbook right here.
Speaker 1:Now we're in vegas, we're playing, we're with al dean the first, and I remember certain chapters. It's a lot of chapters. He's got it tattooed on his forearm, he's got his whole-. Yeah, I got a playbook right here.
Speaker 5:No, we're in Vegas, we're playing. We're with Aldine. Their first album has not come out yet. It's cut but it's not out. No one knows who we are. We're at the Nationals Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas. Yeah, december, um, it's freezing cold 20 degrees, 25 degrees.
Speaker 4:And everybody thinks Vegas is warm year round. It's not.
Speaker 5:No, we were out there. And we're playing on the steps of the arena outside and literally, uh, me, kurt, jason and Rich, two little speakers, you know like you're in a bar, and people are just kind of walking around us and we're playing Amarillo sky, we're playing why? We're playing Johnny Cash, we're playing Hicktown, and no one even knows what they're listening to. And they're literally walking around us and it is so cold. Kurt has gloves on and he's kicking, he's killing it.
Speaker 4:I'm like well, I don't know if I was killing it. How is he?
Speaker 5:playing the guitar with gloves on.
Speaker 4:I was like nobody's listening. Nobody's listening. I was like nobody's listening.
Speaker 5:Nobody's listening. It was so cold and then it must be a thing with Vegas for us, because we have a long history with Vegas. But we go out years later to do the Johnny Cash video for the second record and it snowed and we did the video out there and it was the coldest video.
Speaker 4:Oh, it was so cold and they got a place in Vegas they call it the graveyard where we did the video, and it's where all of the old neon signs that have been taken down. They put them all in this one spot, so all from like the old Vegas buildings and casinos, that's where they all are.
Speaker 5:It's really cool, that's cool. See you remember that? I didn't remember that.
Speaker 4:You're firing buddy. You got it, I ain't firing.
Speaker 5:You got some spark plugs still in there. Cobb, cobb.
Speaker 1:Oh, Cobb.
Speaker 2:I can't wait.
Speaker 1:Well, so you're talking about Vegas and last time we talked a little bit about flying private and stuff like that. But it may surprise a lot of you guys to know that we sometimes fly commercial. How are you guys feeling about flying commercial? There's been a lot of stuff happening.
Speaker 4:There was another thing today. Another thing today. What happened, are you?
Speaker 1:serious. Yeah, it was a Southwest plane. What?
Speaker 5:happened.
Speaker 1:Today, which I'm not sure when this will air, but it was today and everything ended up being okay. But it was to the credit of the crew of Southwest that saw, I think, a private plane coming from the side and they were landing, and so they pulled up and you know, yes, they literally touched down on the runway.
Speaker 4:descending, got to the runway, saw a plane that was crossing, that was going to take off.
Speaker 5:So what plane was landing? Southwest plane, the big plane? Yes, okay.
Speaker 4:And literally saw the plane in front of them going this way and he wheeled back up. What is going on?
Speaker 1:D-E e uh I don't know I don't know, but it's a lot. And then one of the delta planes filled up with smoke, you know like, uh, and then they, they deplaned, and that was today or yesterday that just filled up with smoke and they all went out on the runway and you can see people.
Speaker 2:It's weird, they're just kind of there's a bunch of unqualified people at the controls, but that that's what I'm going with. I'm going to go with that.
Speaker 1:It might be kind of random too, you know, like out in the country, like if somebody dies, then somebody else dies, you can hear the old country people saying I hope I'm not in this group because things happen just kind of in circles a little bit. So sometimes it's just these things are happening, you know, and then it'll probably go away for a while. But I don't know, I'm driving just kind of interesting but your question was how do we feel about flying?
Speaker 1:yeah, because we have to do it. You have to. It's not like we're gonna. For the most part, we don't though we don't we don't.
Speaker 4:I mean we are. We want to be on that bus, and I'm not saying that traveling on the roads is safer. I don't even know what the statistics would be, but we would much rather be on the bus. Like totally, you'll say this it doesn't matter if we're coming from New York city back to Nashville and you can get there in two hour flight. Now give us a 20 hour bus ride.
Speaker 5:Anytime. Yeah, and we've, and we're fortunate enough to fly private a lot and bypass commercial. And still like, give me, give me the long bus ride. Yeah, give commercial. And still like, give me, give me the long bus ride, yeah, give me, give me it. It's we're creatures, we've been on the road for so long that and, and we travel pretty comfortable. I mean, it's the band on a bus with a security guy and you know so it's it's great.
Speaker 2:Do you like the bus? Oh, I do, I love.
Speaker 1:I drive most everywhere now yeah, for neil and I just to cut down on overhead. We like to take like a suburban tahoe. Uh, neil likes to drive, so so I think neil has more miles on my tahoe than I have yep, I like to drive, I'm a control on corporate shows and I like to ride, you know, so uh yeah, who drives? Neil does. He doesn't like it when when I drive makes him nervous like a thelma and Louise thing.
Speaker 2:You guys have A little bit I don't mind, kind of I don't mind.
Speaker 1:I'm a born follower, so I don't care.
Speaker 2:He sits back and goes through his emails.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I can do a lot of stuff. I was about to say what's the conversation like on the road trips.
Speaker 1:Well, you know, it's like you and lana, 30 years I mean they don't, they hadn't said a word in 10 years? I don't think so. I tell you this though lana.
Speaker 5:First of all, she's a saint. We always talk about this. I feel like if you took lana with you, you'd have like amazing food would just show up drinks, it does, desserts, it does somehow everything it does, it does it, it does, it does.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's amazing, at least. Yeah, I mean we're going down 65. I mean there'd be like a dude in a tuxedo walking down the shoulder with him that's what I feel like.
Speaker 5:That's what I feel like she's gonna make sure you're okay. Silver platter of coffee I worry about you and lana's not here. I do. We just got back from the together.
Speaker 2:I'm worried about when you're alone. We went down to the Gulf of America. There you did. Yeah, the Gulf of Neil. Actually, we brought y'all back a little keepsake.
Speaker 4:You did, oh yeah.
Speaker 2:Sure did.

Speaker 4:Well, of course we know it was. I hope it's a candle.
Speaker 2:But this is the first time that we've been back down to the Gulf America since the name was changed. I pulled over.

Speaker 2:I don't know, corn cob.
Speaker 4:I mean, that is how nicknames get formed.
Speaker 2:Do you want to tell me your other nickname? Cob is really just plain old Cob, I mean it's fine.
Speaker 4:yeah, what See the thing with nicknames? Like, nobody wants to be called Cob, right?
Speaker 5:Yeah, I wouldn't. Cob sounds really good compared to your other nickname. I have another nickname, which is that sounds like a.
Speaker 2:It sounds more badass Thrash or Cobb. Yeah, it's pretty good actually.
Speaker 4:I like Cobb. I'm actually okay with Cobb. We're going to need Ed to weigh in, though, because I do trust Ed, but Cornhole, no, we don't want that. We don't want that Pass.
Speaker 1:Taylor, what do you think about Cornhole? No, too close to home. Speaking of Cornhole, I've got a story.
Speaker 3:Do you want to tell a story. No, I'm kidding, no, I'm just kidding.
Speaker 1:I thought we were leading in.
Speaker 3:I don't know it's a perfect segue.
Speaker 2:Speaking of Cornhole last talk, you were telling us about. Speaking of Cobb. No, you were telling us a story about a-. Okay, let's just get to the story. You were in a vitamin store. What happened?
Speaker 1:Well, it was a long time ago.
Speaker 4:How long ago.
Speaker 1:I didn't know, it was probably Three or four days, two months, yes, three or four weeks ago, no, it was a few years ago, and I was at a health store and I was asking the lady who worked there.
Speaker 1:And I was there all the time, you know. So I asked the lady, I said hey, I said I don't want to get something for like a pre-workout, just to have more energy and stuff like that. And uh, and I said so what do you think? Do you, would you recommend anything? And she said she didn't really know. And she said she goes, but she goes, she's one of our customers, uh, rob, so he's all about. I said he'll be able to tell you. And I said, oh, great, so it was real close to closing time, you know he was. They closed at nine. It was like it was like eight, 45 or whatever.
Speaker 1:And so so he comes over and uh, and real nice guy. And uh, he said uh, he said he said yeah, what, what, what kind of question? You got to say I was looking for just a little bit more energy, a little pre-workout thing, you know, as opposed to the post. And I heard that's really good, you know, get you. You know, get you ready and burn more calories and build more muscle and stuff like that. And he goes, he goes, yeah, he goes. What kind of, what kind of workout you doing? And I said uh. I said I said well, right now I'm doing like a body for life thing, but I go, you know, back a little bit and he just kind of looks at me. I mean I wish our listeners were actually watching, because this is kind of a physical story I can tell. But he says he kind of looks back and kind of head-toed and he goes man, I can just tell you whatever you're doing is working, but just kind of like that.
Speaker 3:That's a compliment.
Speaker 1:No, and I said thanks, I lit up like a Christmas tree. He goes, I tell you what, your arms look pretty big and I had a shirt just like this on and a t-shirt just like this and I said well, they're not really that big. And he goes, no, and he reaches over and he just kind of grabs my arm, just kind of unflexed. Did you flex, though? No, no. It's a natural reaction.
Speaker 3:He doesn't have to. He's tight, he's tight. He doesn't have to. He's tight, he's tight.
Speaker 1:I fought against it. I was going to.
Speaker 5:You wanted to. Of course I did. It's a natural reaction. Of course it is. Hey did it move.
Speaker 2:No, you're talking about the bicep.
Speaker 1:Yes, no, but he said he goes, man, he goes. Let me take a look at that. I he goes, let me take a look at that I said what do you mean? He goes. I mean you got a t-shirt on Ernie and I'm thinking are you serious, like right here?
Speaker 3:between the protein and the amino acids. Is it GNC?
Speaker 1:Now I don't know if I should say what store it was.
Speaker 3:It wasn't a GNC.
Speaker 4:It doesn't matter what store it is it was a vitamin store, a vitamin store-ish Vitamin Vitamin shop, sorry, yeah.
Speaker 5:So anyway so what does he look like?
Speaker 1:Normal, just a guy.
Speaker 5:Normal. What does that mean?
Speaker 1:He's in shape He'd look like any one of you guys.
Speaker 5:Yeah, Just-. Well, I mean, I have really big biceps.
Speaker 1:so you know, for those of you only, listening, I have huge biceps. Okay, so so anyway. So I said so like right here he goes yeah, it's just us. And I'm thinking he's right, it's just us. And so I kind of slowly worked it off the shoulder and then flex it and kind of like your dad, you know, when you make a muscle and you're a little kid and he goes, did he make that noise.
Speaker 1:No, but that's kind of what he did. He goes, wow, he goes, man, I'm telling you he goes. I, he goes, man, I'm telling you he goes. I can recommend something for you, but I just keep doing what you're doing. He goes. But I tell you what me and my buddy if you want to change things up a little bit he said me and my buddy have been doing something and it's really cut into our cardio. We're cutting calories like crazy. He said it's really great. I said what are you guys doing?
Speaker 5:He goes, he goes. Well, we're wrestling and I said no, he didn't Dude.
Speaker 4:I mean, you can't, you honestly can't make this up.
Speaker 1:Okay, I said, oh, wrestling, yeah, I said, I said I did that like I was in junior high Wasn't that great, you know. But is just wrestling pads With mud, with oil, maybe oils, I don't know, but anyway he goes, he goes. Yeah, we get down there for hours and we just wrestle. And I said, wow, did you?
Speaker 4:go. No, that's when At what point I was going to say, at what?
Speaker 1:point do you go?
Speaker 4:oh no, that's when.
Speaker 1:I started thinking oh, he wants to hold me, yeah he wants to hold me, he wants to take you down.
Speaker 4:I realized this.
Speaker 3:So I said you know what?
Speaker 1:I'm probably good. I mean, I live a good piece away from here. He goes whereabouts. I said oh, way over the hill, anyway. So I got to the register and everything and I was just trying to distance myself from him. Meanwhile I'm looking at the lady, this guy you've had to know, you've known him for years, the guy that's trying to pick me up it can't be the first time it's like your own little. Pulp.
Speaker 1:Fiction moment but it doesn't stop there, so it's just us two. And he's behind me at the register and the door is the door to get out is behind also and he goes. And, as I'm kind of squirreling around, he goes. Hey, man, is that your Tahoe out there? And I is behind also and he goes. And as I'm kind of squirreling around, he goes, he goes. Hey man, he goes, uh, he goes, is that your tahoe out there? And I said, and I said, I said I said yeah, and I had old o2 tahoe, gold one, and um, he goes, he goes. Man, I tell you what he goes, he goes. Yeah, you want to arm wrestle or something we can arm wrestle no, and I said I don't know how.
Speaker 1:Why would we arm wrestle? I don't know why we'd, because goes, yeah, we could do it like you had a console, we could arm wrestle over your console. And then I started panicking. I'm like no, my basset hound's out there and he'll freak out. He'll freak out, he's in the front seat and everything. I gotta go anyway. And so I went out and started and left.
Speaker 2:I'm sorry, but that's like.
Speaker 1:It was like okay, when I'm walking out, is he running behind me? I don't know. I didn't want to hurt his feelings, you know how that goes. You think you could have taken him?
Speaker 2:I'm talking about arm wrestling.
Speaker 1:Maybe, so I'm going to blame this on you. I don't know.
Speaker 4:Because you must have put out a vibe or something. I didn't.
Speaker 1:No, you took your shirt off, I didn't.
Speaker 5:No, I didn didn't.
Speaker 1:No, I didn't take my shirt off just way inside. You kind of showed it over the shoulder, and I had a very tasteful t-shirt on, just like the one I'm wearing tonight but then you flex for him. Yeah, I know, I know that that's the first time I did, but it wasn't a full, it was kind of like ah, there it is.
Speaker 4:You know, it was just uh, what's interesting is you kind of distance yourself, and then he came back, and then he came back. He came, but yes, I wasn he came back.
Speaker 1:Yes, I wasn't, you know, yeah, pursuing that. And I think at that point he's thinking, okay, I'm not going to wrestle him, but I would like to touch his hand so we could at least arm wrestle Anyway. So that was my, that was an encounter. I mean, I would take it as a compliment.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I did feel pretty decent about it it lifted me up a little bit too.
Speaker 5:No, I mean Kalo. You know what I mean. It's a good thing, yeah. And then I started feeling bad.
Speaker 1:I started thinking he probably has no one. It's around the holidays, Probably has nobody, you know.
Speaker 2:And You're such a giving people person.
Speaker 4:Yeah, I'm surprised you actually didn't arm wrestle. I don't think I gave my number?
Speaker 1:I probably didn't. I don't think he gave my number.
Speaker 2:I don't think I did?
Speaker 1:I don't think I did.
Speaker 5:Yeah, anyway, that's pretty good Not that there's anything wrong with that Of course not. What.
Speaker 1:That's a Seinfeld thing. I'm always going to shut that down.
Speaker 5:I'm always going to shut it.
Speaker 2:It's a Seinfeld thing, I'll shut it down Seinfeld's a show years ago yeah jerry seinfeld, the comedian, was in.
Speaker 4:It does remind me of a time when we were in salt lake city, though I don't know if we should tell that story or not tell it why not. Oh, you and those two guys and all the I mean, it isn't anything, no other than this was a long time, very long time ago, and we used to, you know it's like okay we were in our phase of like, hey, let's just let's play our show and then go have some fun.
Speaker 4:Let's go to a bar and we'll have a drink. Yeah, so we had heard. No, actually I think it was rich redmond said he saw a bar across the street from where we were playing. It's like, from what I understand, somebody told me today this is where you need to go for after the show. It's where everybody hangs out. So we do our show, we go over there. There's a line to get in. We're like, oh yeah, that's kind of hopping. So we were going in and we're going upstairs and we're like god, a lot of dudes here.
Speaker 5:I don't know, it's sausage fest a lot of guys here tonight? Why is?
Speaker 4:there only guys here? And then there was a lot of guys there tonight. Why is there only guys here? And then there was a lot of guys there A lot of guys, and then we realized there were only guys there.
Speaker 2:And they saw y'all walk in and they saw us all walk in with coiffed hair.
Speaker 4:Oh yeah, Our show clothes on.
Speaker 5:Yeah, we got our first drink for free.
Speaker 1:Those show clothes. That's Ted Ringer. He says those guys are just like us. Yeah, he had a ringer. He says those guys are just like us, we show clothes.
Speaker 2:And again not that there's anything wrong with that.
Speaker 4:We did take the first free drink, and then we left, then we left.
Speaker 5:Most of us left. I don't know what Redmond did, but I'm kidding. Rich will kill me if he hears that. Strike that from the record Jim.
Speaker 1:No, no, no, no. We didn't see him for about a month, but Rich came home late.
Speaker 5:I mean I don't know when he came home late. I mean that's good, kalo, what do you mean? What do you mean that was your story.
Speaker 3:You wrote it out. No, I didn't ride it out.
Speaker 1:Let's be clear.
Speaker 5:It was touch and go, no.
Speaker 1:Oh my God, Nope wasn't touch and go.
Speaker 4:Anyway, I don't even know where you go to that.
Speaker 1:Well, let's talk about Keystone Pipeline. Wow, just right to another story.
Speaker 4:Yeah, just cold turkey right into it, pipeline to another One pipeline to another.
Speaker 1:Speaking of pipelines, I think yeah, neil was talking about it. Right, trump's getting that going again, trying to get it approved and everything which will help the economy and energy and things like that. Right, it's a positive thing.
Speaker 4:Do you have something to say about the Keystone Pipeline?
Speaker 1:Well, I don't know if Neil wanted to start it.
Speaker 2:No, you're talking about when you were out here, we were playing golf. No, you were playing golf.
Speaker 1:Well, yeah, you golf. Well, yeah, what, you had some guests out here, you have some guests. It was a, it was a benefit and I don't think were we on the same scramble team or were you ahead?
Speaker 2:you're ahead of me, right? Yeah so anyway, so we're with these guys but they're replacing the, the gas line, the huge line that runs through this whole property.
Speaker 1:It's huge, it's gigantic yeah, and I didn't, I didn't really know, I just knew that there it was, it was a big line, that's all I knew, huge, right. And so these guys, we're, we're on the. The second hole for us, which actually was, was whole, uh, 10. Yeah, it was actually our first hole. So we're on the green and we're going between 10 and 11 and there's a huge, huge pipe. It wasn't to me, it wasn't a, it wasn't a gas line, it was huge. And so, uh, it's the guys that said, man, what, what's that right there? And I, I said, well, that's Keystone Pipeline. And they said, for real, I thought they closed that down. And everything.
Speaker 1:No way I said that's what I thought too and I said, but it's running right through here. I said the developer here.
Speaker 2:You went with it Did you go with it. Oh yeah, you went with it. He said screw it.
Speaker 1:They're taking pictures. They were taking pictures and I was sending it to them later.
Speaker 5:Wait a minute, are you?
Speaker 1:being serious?
Speaker 4:Yes, are these your own?
Speaker 1:men.
Speaker 4:Yes.
Speaker 1:And then later I told Neil I said well, I showed those guys. I said they had time of their lives. I showed them the Keystone Pipeline and everything he goes, keystone Pipeline. Neil said you didn't say that, did you? And I said, yeah, he goes, that's the colonial pipeline. I said really, and so I do. That night I'm like hey guys, I might have had a small, small discretion there they're taking pictures.
Speaker 1:Hold on, because they've already sent it to their family and all their friends, and it looks like I made a tiny mistake. Hold on, so did you actually think?
Speaker 4:it was a Keystone Pipeline. There she is boys, I thought that you were PSing them. No, I didn't know. You thought the Keystone.
Speaker 5:Pipeline ran down Right through the neighborhood here, Possibly.
Speaker 2:Yep, kalo Kalo. You're a smart individual. It's a long pipeline. It's a long pipeline, you're kidding.
Speaker 5:You didn't think that?
Speaker 1:No, I did. That's what I told them.
Speaker 5:You thought the Keystone Pipeline was running through down here.
Speaker 1:Somebody told me that or I heard it or I misheard it.
Speaker 4:I thought it was a funnier story you telling them, because you knew it wasn't.
Speaker 3:No, I'm sorry guys.
Speaker 2:I like the segue from the vitamin store to the deck. I like the way I thought about it better.
Speaker 1:Me too Like you were messing with him, maybe I was, I don't know what to believe.
Speaker 4:That's amazing, oh my God.
Speaker 2:The key's so blank-blank.
Speaker 1:Yeah, who knew, who knew, I'm not an old guy.
Speaker 4:Hey guys, I do need to ask you this because I think it's serious. Okay, Cobb's getting serious. Uh-oh, Everybody everybody. Yeah, that might stick, I don't know.
Speaker 5:It's always stuck, dude it may or may not.
Speaker 1:I shook out some info there, Cobb.
Speaker 4:I'm going to send you an email later tonight. You do need to report to me five things you've done in the last week.
Speaker 5:Okay, nice, okay, nice. Okay, all right, okay why are people getting mad about that?
Speaker 4:anyway, anybody that doesn't know, elon, here's what I'm going to say For all the federal employees. Like just say five things you've done in the last week.
Speaker 5:I had a conversation this morning with my neighbor, which is rare because I have good neighbors, but I don't like to get too close to the neighbors.
Speaker 4:I know Well, I mean that's okay, they're good people.
Speaker 5:Anyway, the neighbors directly across the street are really good people.
Speaker 5:They're, you know, um they, oh, yeah, they do and I gave him some cash swag and you know they're. They love the podcast and we were talking about some of this stuff and I said you know, here's what gets me. The great thing about this country is that every four years, you get to go out and vote for who you want to be president, and I let your voice be heard. What we need, what we need to do, is for everybody to go out and vote and do vote who you want to vote for. That's great, but when the results are in and you got a president for four years, that's what's.
Speaker 4:That's what it's going to be and, by the way, root for your president, no matter who.
Speaker 5:It's great, but just when, when, whoever it is gets elected, it's time to like somewhat, come together, it's it's. We can't last four years. You know, look when Biden was in. By no means was I a Biden fan, by no means.
Speaker 4:However, I still respect the presidency and you want the country to do well, no matter what.
Speaker 5:Everybody. Yeah, if you know we want it to do well, we don't want it to fail or things to be bad. I just feel like we all need to get back to that where, like, go out and vote, but if it doesn't go your way, you got to move on.
Speaker 4:Can I tell you something? You were talking about cash swag and we're talking about our friend Cash Patel, who's now the new FBI director, which we're proud of him and we're thankful he's there. So I didn't even realize just yesterday I had the sweatshirt on, didn't even realize just yesterday I had the sweatshirt on says fight with cash. I didn't even realize I had it on, I don't even think about it. I was gonna sound whatever. But I've been trying to think about an addition to the house, just doing a little, whatever, man cave yes, where are you going to do it of?
Speaker 5:where are you off your other man cave?
Speaker 4:yeah, off the other man cave. Second man cave. This is for you the girl man cave, just Second man cave. This is for you the grown man cave, just in case you need a place to sleep.
Speaker 5:Like a crying room for your husband. Okay, Anyway.
Speaker 4:So the guy, the contractor, comes over and I go to meet him and he looks at me and he goes. He looks at my sweatshirt, he looks at the side, he says don't tread on me, it's that thing, and he goes. He just gives me one of those.
Speaker 1:Well, and immediately for those of you listening, the man cave are you serious?
Speaker 5:oh, I'm serious. The man cave den. That that's what I mean.
Speaker 4:He didn't like it, he didn't like your shirt, bro, when I say he didn't like it. It was the end of the. It was the end of the discussion and that dude swings a hammer yeah, I know I was actually whoever heard of? That I was actually surprised. But he gave me an up and down and I was like, oh, I actually looked. I was like, oh really, and it was the end of it well, wow, that, that's what I'm talking about.
Speaker 1:That's amazing, this is so ridiculous.
Speaker 5:You know everybody's got a right, as an american, to vote who they want to vote for, think how they want to think absolutely the days of the days of people feeling like it's okay to do that to you and he's turning down money, a job it's like I don't even get that.
Speaker 4:I would never hire a liberal to do an addition on my house Ever. Well, apparently they wouldn't hire a conservative.
Speaker 2:I would never hire a liberal who supposedly swings a hammer. I would never do it.
Speaker 1:Now one reason why, Like why wouldn't you hire a liberal? Let's say they're the best. Well, this dude right here has got to be that's a good bit. Why wouldn't you hire a liberal?
Speaker 2:Let's say they're the best this dude right here. I mean I'm like he's got to be the only freaking lib contractor in America.
Speaker 4:I was really taken aback, I really was.
Speaker 5:I'm surprised too, because it's such a blue collar. Yeah, you know, I just find it ridiculous that look, it's like when someone wears a you know a hat the red hat. This is america. This is america. I'm sorry, you know, really bizarre, like if you didn't vote for trump. I'm sorry that your side didn't win, but it's time to like, okay, well, gosh, I'm not sorry, we're gonna sorry, yeah, but if you're them, we'll get them next time. Like, do I mean? All I'm really seeing is a whole bunch of crying far left libs, and it's like. My advice to them is to I wouldn't focus so much on trump and elon and cash and everyone you don't like, christy gnome and everyone that's rubbing you wrong. I would. I would concentrate on who do you have coming up in four years? Yeah, cause they don't have an answer for it still.
Speaker 5:They're still they're still focused on what they can't change.
Speaker 3:What they don't like.
Speaker 5:So focus on how to figure out how you lost. If you, if you, if you want to win, I don't know I'm I'm confused by them.
Speaker 1:Yeah Well, you do have to think it's the left would say to your point of saying saying, hey, you know, you know your, your person, didn't win, so just kind of pray for them and get them in four years they would say it's easy for us to say that because our team won Right, but none of us were hoping that Biden did bad or Obama did bad. I wasn't thinking about that, like my guy didn't win, but I was praying for that president.
Speaker 4:I don't want. I want America to be safe.
Speaker 5:There's your difference right there. But their team's won more than our team in the last 20 years. So they had a little dynasty going. Little Pats dynasty going had a little Alabama going for a while.
Speaker 1:A little Saban Looks like that's over.
Speaker 2:See how they compared your football team to Alabama.
Speaker 1:They're putting out the Alabama thing on Netflix to build it back up, because the season is so good.
Speaker 4:Hey, what is it? It's really good.
Speaker 1:I mean it's supposed to be really good, but it's a Netflix thing?
Speaker 2:No, I haven't seen it yet. It's on Fox Nation. Do you guys agree though?
Speaker 5:Oh, totally agree. Seriously, it's getting old. It's like mainstream media and everybody is like look you're just dividing it more.
Speaker 4:A thousand percent. I don't know if it's ever. I hope it gets better. I don't know if it's going to get better.
Speaker 5:I was hoping it would but maybe after things, maybe the dust settles in six months or whatever it just shows you what hate does Somebody.
Speaker 2:That's all it shows. If you fester hate, let it fester and fester and fester.
Speaker 4:Fester's a great word, but I love that word. You want to be called fester? No, uncle fester, ed don. You want me to be called Fester? No, no, cobb's good, uncle Fester, fester's not bad. I mean, I'll be glad.
Speaker 1:Ed, don't you even think Fester's going to work. Fester or Festus.
Speaker 4:I'd rather Festus than Fester. Okay, for some reason.
Speaker 2:But if you let hate fester and you don't try to I agree you snowballs.
Speaker 5:Oh, yeah, yeah, it does and it just builds up and you become this freaking shell of a person. That's classic thrash talk, like in a good way, because I think people, that's what I'm talking about. Though, like none of us, the two sides don't agree. When biden was in, look, he didn't love it. It wasn't great. There's some terrible decisions, but, look, everybody needs to pull for everybody at the end of the day, I agree If you won't take the time to learn what's going on.
Speaker 2:there's so much hate in their hearts and everything else they won't take the time to. You know what? Let's look at what he's doing, or what he's trying to do to the country. They won't even take the time to do it. They're done, it's over.
Speaker 5:I will admit to this. So I, you know, I look at, you know, fox news I also. I also look at cnn and I say, okay, well, here's the two sides generally, generally it lies in the middle, like both sides, but I, but I look at both sides of the news. I look at both sides and make sure I'm not missing something. They would never do that.
Speaker 5:And if every time I've tried to have a rational conversation with a, with a far left person, you cannot reason with them, you can't get them to even listen to you. I don't know what. I don't know what to tell them.
Speaker 1:Well, it's because and the reason is because they look at you or or me, or Neil or Kurt, whoever's talking as a dumbass redneck, and sometimes it's just the way we talk. It's not what we say, it's how we say it, and they just listen to your dialect and where you're from.
Speaker 2:That's right, you should have talked to that guy in that vitamin store. He really knows something. Hey, when you were in that vitamin store, you should have talked like that right there.
Speaker 1:No, that would have been worse.
Speaker 2:You might have been turned on by it.
Speaker 1:No, that would have been the deliverance style.
Speaker 2:I'd have been Ned Beatty, m-i-c-a Redneck South.
Speaker 5:Tennessee. Maybe what it was was what you were buying. What were you buying? Well, what were you looking at?
Speaker 1:What kind of vitamin. Were you buying testosterone? No, just like a pre-workout drink blue pill, you know just a little white wine or something oh my gosh I don't know.
