Inside Marcy's Mind
My Wallet Pays For Wi‑Fi, Snacks, And TSA—Why Didn’t Anyone Tell Me?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A bag of overbaked pretzels, a frosty Stanley on the nightstand, and a Chicago skyline in the distance set the scene—then we pivot to the quiet powerhouse hiding in your wallet: credit card perks that pay for real life. We walk through the exact benefits most people miss and show how to turn plastic into protection, comfort, and travel upgrades without spending a dollar more.
I share the turning point that pushed me to audit our cards after a steep annual fee, then map out a clear framework for using perks with intention. We dig into travel benefits like primary rental car insurance that beats the counter upsell, trip delay and interruption coverage that can reimburse hotels and meals during weather chaos, and TSA PreCheck or Global Entry credits that keep lines short. If you fly, you’ll hear how free checked bags, priority boarding, and lounge access can easily save hundreds a year, plus smart ways to use lounges on arrival for cleaner restrooms, a snack, and a reset before baggage claim.
Outside the airport, we get practical about purchase protection within the first 90 days, extended warranties that add a year, and price protection that can refund you after a sudden sale. We unpack phone insurance that kicks in just by paying your carrier bill with the right card, helping you cancel those extra monthly fees. Then it’s reward strategy made simple: match cards to categories—travel, dining, groceries, gas—so points stack toward flights, hotel nights, or statement credits. You’ll leave with a lean three‑card setup, a one‑page perk tracker on your phone, and calendar reminders to review annual fees, use credits before they expire, and downgrade or upgrade by need.
No shame, no debt lectures—just a smarter way to use what you already pay for. Hit play, then pick one perk to activate this week. If this helped you find hidden value, follow the show, share it with a friend who loves to travel, and leave a quick review so more listeners can unlock their own perks.
Snacks, Stanley Cups, And Costco Finds
SPEAKER_00Hello and welcome to back welcome to back. Welcome back to Inside Marcy's Mind. My name is Marcy Backis and I am your wack-a-doodle host. Oh my gosh. I was just eating the most amazing pretzels. I have to tell you. They're by Unique Snacks. Craig picked them up at Whole Foods. They're called Splits Extra Dark, Overbaked to Perfection. So they're a um little bit of a thicker pretzel-shaped pretzel, not a rod, but a pretzel-shaped pretzel. And they're overbaked. They're literally burnt. They're black on the top. And I am telling you, they are addicting little boogers. If I start coughing or choking, it's because I've eaten so many of these dry darn pretzels, but ma'am, I love things that are burnt. I like that burnt taste. And these are burnt to perfection. Again, they're called unique snacks. The original split open pretzels called Splits, Extra Dark, Overbaked to Perfection. And they are overbaked to perfection. I am not getting paid for that ad. I'm just telling you my newest snack obsession. That and popcorners. Popcorners are still like right up there in my wheelhouse, loving me some popcorners. I also love me some crystal light individual packs, lemonade raspberry. Those are one of my greatest things now. I put them in my big giant Stanley mug, which keeps everything cold. But man, are they heavy? Especially when you fill them up. But I don't drag mine around town like a lot of the young people do, but I keep mine at home. It helps me drink and stay hydrated. Um, it keeps everything cold. I love having it next to my bed because if I wake up in the middle of the night with that pasty mouth, you know what I'm talking about. Especially if you ate garlic. I woke up with garlic mouth the other day, and um having a nice ice cold sip out of that is heaven to me. So those are just some of the things. What else am I loving right now? Popcorners. I went to Costco yesterday. Craig was getting a colonoscopy, lucky Craig. So I dropped him off, did all that, ran over to Costco, and um I got the um I use the liquid IVs when I go to the gym in my bottle. And I got uh lemonade raspberry sugar-free. And I use I used that today. That's delicious. You have Costco finds that you like. We have certain things that we love. We definitely get our K cups for the Curig there. We get our coffee there. What else? We get a lot of things there. Yesterday, those are some of the things I got. Soap. They rearranged my Costco, which is kind of funny. I uh and it's really funny because we called that the Alec Costco. Because when our son lived here and went to school in Chicago, that was a Costco he would go to to get his beer. He would ride on his scooter, he'd put the beer on the bottom and he'd ride his scooter home. Pretty funny. We call it Alec Costco. It's kind of cool because from the parking lot you can see the whole skyline of the city, the Sears Tower, all of it. It's just beautiful. And sometimes I can't believe that this is my life. That, you know, for a place where we
Chicago Life And Settling Back In
SPEAKER_00used to come to visit all the time is where I live now. And sometimes it still is a lot to me. It's been great home from my road trip again. Um, I was I've gotten back into my routine, which I think we all like a little routine. I think not working is great. I love having my basic daily routine that has a little bit of flex to it. Taking some naps. Let's see. Oh, I caught up on the latest episodes of Shrinking. If you haven't watched Shrinking on Apple TV, I recommend it highly. It's a great show and uh love it. So their new season dropped. So I've caught up on that. I got an episode to watch today. Survivor started last night, which you may not be a Survivor fan, and that is fine, but I have watched since episode one. I have never missed an episode, which, yes, that means in the beginning, I taped them on the VCR, but I have never, ever, ever, ever missed an episode of either um Survivor or The Amazing Race. And so Survivor season 50, because they do two seasons a year, is started last night with players from episode one all the way up to episode 49. Uh, the gal that won is playing this again. Um, some really great players. Some, and and if you don't know, there's two ways to play Survivor. There's the original way, which was 33 days, I want to say, and now I think they play it in 17 days after COVID. Um, so it's a more accelerated game. So it's kind of fun to see the old players try to figure out the new way, the new players trying to figure out the old players. Anyways, if you are a Survivor fan, please look into season 50.
TV Catch‑Ups And Reality Favorites
SPEAKER_00And then Jeff Probst has a podcast, which is great to listen to as a companion to it. So, and tonight uh Traders is on. I think this is the season finale of Traders Tonight, I want to say. So that's exciting for me. I do love me some reality TV, sorry, but I do. I love a lot of other things. There's a lot of things I watch. Like I said, if you haven't caught um shrinking on Apple TV, I recommend it highly. So life is going good, doctor's appointments here and there. You know how that goes. Just stuff like that. But life is basically good. Going to be looking at buying a new car in the next month here. And I hate that. I don't know about you. Buying cars is like the worst thing. I love a car, but I hate buying them. I love my car, but there's a couple reasons I need a new one. It's a plug-in hybrid, and the plug that my car uses is getting um antiquated. Um that's going to be a problem in the next few years. So time to get rid of that car. I also need a car that we can fit my bike in. I have a pedal assist bike and I want to go riding other than on the lakefront here in Chicago. Although it's beautiful, uh, the speed demons on it are a little too much for this 65-year-old plus. I do have to ride on city, Chicago City streets to get to the lakefront. And can I do it? Yes. Do I like doing it? No, don't. And this is the year of not doing what I don't like. So guess what? We're gonna get a new car so we can take my bike somewhere else. Um, today, what are we gonna talk about? You know what? Um, this we're gonna talk about this because this came up with Craig and I. Are you aware of all your credit card perks? Probably not. So one of Craig's credit cards just um we got the annual fee. It was 595 annual fee, and then it was 175 for me to have a card. I said to Craig, do we even know what perks come with this? Now I have an American Airlines card. I am very well aware of the perks and I use them. Our American Express Gold. We have not gone up to the platinum because it's $800, but you get a lot of perks. So I'm trying to figure out. We started to try to figure out all this stuff. Anyways, if you don't know your perks, it's time to know them. So we're gonna talk about that today. So I want to welcome you back to Inside Marcy's Mind. I am Marcy, and this is where we talk about life skills, life hacks, and things no one taught us, but probably should have. And today we are going to talk about sitting in your what's sitting in your wallet right now. Those credit cards. Now, before anyone gets nervous, this is not a lecture about debt. I don't care what you spend on your credit card. This isn't going to have anything to do with this. This is not a financial shame hour. This is about something more specific, blah, blah, blah. Perks. Because as I told you, I recently realized something slightly embarrassing. I've been carrying around tiny plastic VIP passes and using them like their debit cards. No strategy, no awareness, no benefits. Now, I am aware of some things. So, particularly Uber. Uber goes on to my American Express because I get $20 in Uber credits a month. So I figured that out. Um, there's some other things. Uh oh, and and miles. I'm a mile whore, so is Craig. We love our American Airline miles. Um, so we both have American Airlines cards separate. But like I said, his had a really hefty renewal fee this year. So swipe and go is fine, but I started digging into what these cards actually offer. And let me tell you, we are leaving money, protection, travel upgrades, and free stuff on the table. I don't know about you, but I'm not willing to leave any of that on the table. So today we're gonna break it down. Travel perks, purchase protection, insurance you didn't know you had, reward strategies, hidden credits, and how to organize your cards like an adult. Let's get smarter with our plastic. Okay. So, what we know is our card is more than a payment tool. Most of us use credit cards for one thing. Pay points, move on.
Shopping For A New Car And City Biking
SPEAKER_00Pay points, move on, pay points, move on. But higher tier and even mid-tier cards come with travel insurance, rental car coverage. I'm telling you now, I only rent cars with my American Express because I am covered. Okay, I don't pay for any of that extra rental car insurance. Extended warranties, price protection. What does that mean? Cell phone insurance, concierge services, airport lounge access, free check bags, TSA global entry credits, purchase protection for theft or damage. And here's the wild part we don't use them because we don't read the benefits guide. Raise your hand if you've ever opened up that tiny booklet. Or I have now. Exactly. So what's life hack number one? Go online, log into your account, and click on benefits. Then just read them. You might be already paying an annual fee. You may as well use what you're paying for. So those annual fees, that's what they're going to cover. They're covering all of those benefits that you're ignoring. And watch those annual fees because they are going up and up on cards. So just read them. Just read them. Go through them. So travel perks, you're probably ignoring. Now, this one is big, especially if you travel.
The Credit Card Perks Wake‑Up Call
SPEAKER_00And I know some of us enjoy a little road trip, a little cruise, and let's go somewhere warm. Well, hello. Speaking to the queen here. Here's what many travel cards offer rental car insurance. If you pay for your rental car with the card, many cards automatically include primary collision coverage, which means you can decline that expensive rental counterinsurance. And that is fear-based. I hate fear-based things. I hate fear-based selling. That alone can save you $20 to $40 a day on a rental car. Here's a life hack. Before your next rental, check your cards benefits so you know if you're covered. Check all of your cards because if card A doesn't cover it, maybe card B doesn't. That's the one you use for rental cars. Be smart. Also, check your own car insurance. I have to be honest with you, your own car insurance may cover that. All right. Here's another one: a fear-based insurance sale, trip cancellation or interruption insurance. If you pay for flights or cruises with certain cards, you may be covered if you get sick. Weather delays. Okay, people, we've had a billion weather delays. The card you use may already cover you. If something unexpected happens, you may not need to buy separate travel insurance every time, but there may be rules to it. Know your rules. Don't be a fool. Do you need to keep receipts? Can you just get your own hotel and send in receipts? How does your travel protection work for weather delays, for missed flights, for
Travel Benefits Most People Miss
SPEAKER_00getting sick? What if you miss a flight because your flight is late? Now we know also you need to know what the airline is liable for. Be smart. Know that. Don't be standing there going, give me this, give me that. You can state. It states in your rules that if you make me miss a flight, you need to cover my next flight. You know, whatever it is, know it. So you can stand there as an intelligent human being and not a screaming, raging maniac, because I guarantee you the screening, screaming, raging maniacs don't get anything. The quiet, intelligent, well-thought-out, well-knowledged traveler gets everything. And tell you right now. All right, free check bags. I know this. Airline co-branded cards often give you free check bags, priority boarding. This can save you hundreds over a year. Well, my status with American and my American card give me all of that. And I love it. I made my status again this year. I just got my notice that I am gold for another year. And I can, depending on how much I travel, I can go up to platinum. Craig is platinum for life because Mr. Three Million Miler Club, they gave him platinum for life. But when I travel alone, I like my perks. All right, here's important TSA pre-check or global entry credit. Many cards reimburse you for that application fee every four to five years. Did you know that? That's basically free fast security. So if you're too cheap to get TSA pre check, you better check those credit cards because they may give you a um a credit. I know that my American Airlines card gives me a food credit every month and a Wi-Fi credit every month for flights. So I know that at least once a month I can get Wi-Fi for free on the plane. Or I can get snacks. I think Craig said now with our status, we get free Wi-Fi on the plane anyway. I didn't fly recently, he did. This is what I love airport access, lounge access. Some cards offer lounge passes. Now I love this and I hate this. So Craig has always had airport lounge access. Back in the day, the lounge was not very crowded. With all of this, the lounges are getting more crowded, but they are important. So check and see if you get airport lounge access. Some cards offer lounge passes. In those, if you've never been in an airport lounge, you are missing out. Good food, clean bathrooms, alcohol, wine, quiet seating, plug-in capabilities, free snacks. It's a great place to go. And Craig always gets an apple when he goes, it's wrapped in cellophane. It's a joke between us, but he gets one every time he goes. And I'll tell you something else. When you land at the airport, Craig and I'll go into the lounge just to use the restrooms, grab a little drink. I don't drink alcohol, get a coffee or get a soda, take a moment to decompress, and then we go down and pick up our luggage if we did indeed check. We don't always check, but sometimes we do. If we didn't check, we'll go in there with our luggage and we don't have to rush. We can take our time, um, all of that. So don't just use it when you're flying out. You use it when you land to use better restrooms, get a snack, get some trail mix, whatever you might. Have a little lunch if it's lunchtime. Purchase protection, the secret hero. This one blew my mind. Many cards offer purchase protection for theft or damage within 90 days. So if you get a phone and you break it or someone steals it, look at your purchase protection on your credit card. Extended warranties. They usually add a year to a manufacturer's warranty. Price protection refunds the difference if the price drops within a certain period of time. So if you buy a new washer and dryer and that price drops, check it out. Know this stuff. Make some notes for yourself if you have to. Have a little credit card notebook and say, American Express does this for me, blah, blah, blah, does that for me. So if you buy a new appliance and it breaks after the warranty expires, your credit card may have extended that coverage. A television, a computer. Or you buy something new and the price drops in a month. Some cards will reimburse you. These are life hacks. These are, if you're going to do a big purchase, use the card with the best protections, not just whatever's on the top of your wallet. Know your credit cards. Do you hear me? Know your credit cards. Know what they are doing for you. Cell phone insurance. If you pay your monthly phone bill with certain
Lounge Access And Smarter Airport Habits
SPEAKER_00credit cards, you may automatically get phone protection. Crack screen, theft. You might already be covered. Check before you pay for separate phone insurance through your carrier. Okay. Are you paying 20 bucks a month for cell phone coverage? Check your credit cards. Reward strategies. This is important. Stop random swiping. I keep track of this. Here's where we get smart. Not all cards earn the same points on everything. If you have one that gives you three times points on travel, use that one for your travel. If you've got one, another one that does four times the points on dining, use that one when you eat out. Groceries or gas. Look at what your cards are giving you and use them accordingly. I know this sounds like a lot. It's an afternoon on a Saturday of figuring this all out. Write it down, put it on a spreadsheet, do a Word document. I don't care. Fold one, put it in your bill folds, your purse, your wallet, wherever, and check it before you swipe. Use the right card for the right category. Yes, it takes 30 seconds of awareness, but those points add up over a year. Are you kidding me? That could be a free flight, a hotel night, statement credits. That's real money. Let me tell you something. On this trip, I used um all Hilton's for traveling because I there I've already explained this to you. You know why. I made sure I have my Hilton's. I am a member of their club. I use my Hilton honors points. Hilton's, when you check in, if you are an honored member, they give you two bottles of water and a snack. Let me tell you, that saved me a ton of money. I'd fill up my little Stanley, have that in the car with my fresh water. I have my little snack when I got my room. I loved it. Okay. So organize your cards
Purchase Protection And Warranties
SPEAKER_00like a CEO. Let's not get chaotic. You don't need 17 cards. You need one daily card, one travel with perks card, and a backup. Life hack system. Make a simple list on your phone. So this is what I've been talking to you about: the credit card name, the annual fee, the main perks, and the bonus categories. I forgot I wrote this down that you could put it on your phone or you can print it out and have it, however, you like things. Set calendar reminders for annual fee review. Annual fee review. What did you hear me say? Craig and I just spent $700 to renew his American Airlines card. Now that one is the one that gives us access, and it gives also me access to the American Airline Lounge. We're never going to change that card, but let's see what else those fees are going to give us. So set your calendar reminders for annual fee review, rewards expirations, travel credit usage with deadlines. Do you have some travel credit because you didn't take a flight? Blah, blah, blah. Once a year review, downgrade if needed. Cancel if useless. Upgrade if beneficial. Did you hear me say that? Once a year, look at your credit cards, review them. Downgrade if you don't want that, all those perks. You may be able to have the card without having the large fee, but you won't get the perks. Cancel if useless. If you've got a card that's just you're paying once a year on it, you're not using it, get rid of it. Of it. Upgrade if beneficial. Look at one of your cards of upgrading it. I mean, Craig and I have been weighing this out. We're not going to do it now of going to the Platinum Amex because instead of that, we've got his credit card, the American Airlines. Don't let the perks distract you. You want to be intentional about everything. Here's the grounded part. Perks are amazing. Debt is not. Never carry a balance just to chase points. We have no balance on any of our credit cards.
Phone Insurance And Rewards Strategy
SPEAKER_00Ever at all. Zero, zero. Was there a time in our life where we carried balances? Hell yes. Hell yes. But let me tell you, not anymore. Interest cancels out rewards fast, and interest is high on credit cards right now. Again, I told you this wasn't going to be a lecture about that, so it's not. If you can't pay it off monthly, the perks are not worth it. We are strategic, not reckless. Alrighty. So here's your homework. This week, log into your credit card accounts, read the benefits, pick one perk you haven't been using and use it. That's it. That's it. That's all I'm asking you to do. Because here's the thing: life gets easier when you use the tools that are already available to you for heaven's sakes. And sometimes the tools are right there in your wallet. We're not trying to be flashy, we're trying to be smart. And smart women don't leave free travel, insurance, or money sitting there unused. That's today's Life Hack. I'll see you next week on Inside Marcy's mind. And remember, go out and do something positive.
