Jesus Preaches, Pardons & Heals
Sermon Title: Jesus Preaches, Pardons, and Heals
Scripture: Mark 2:1–12
Key Verse – Mark 2:5 (KJV):
"When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee."
Introduction:
In this well-known passage, Jesus is in Capernaum. The house is packed. People are spilling out the doors, desperate to hear the words of this miracle-working teacher. But four men arrive with their paralyzed friend—desperate not just for a sermon, but for a Savior.
This story demonstrates that Jesus doesn’t just preach sermons; He transforms lives. He preaches the Word, pardons the sinner, and heals the broken. He is the full answer to our human condition.
I. Jesus Preaches the Word (Mark 2:2)
“And straightway many were gathered together… and he preached the word unto them.”
Explanation:
Jesus’ priority wasn’t miracles—it was the message. Before the healing, before the miracle, Jesus made sure that the people heard truth. Because a healed body without a healed soul still leads to death.
Illustration:
A doctor once treated a patient for a persistent cough. The patient was grateful, but two weeks later, he was back—this time with chest pain. After tests, the doctor found lung cancer. The cough was only a symptom of a deeper issue.
👉 Likewise, Jesus doesn’t just deal with symptoms—He deals with the source: sin.
Short Story:
There was a missionary in a remote village who brought food, medicine, and water filters. But before distributing them, he gathered the people to preach about Jesus. A villager said, “We need food, not preaching.” The missionary responded, “Yes, but what good is it if your body lives and your soul is lost?”
Takeaway:
We must never overlook the preaching of the Word—it’s the foundation of real healing.
II. Jesus Pardons the Sinner (Mark 2:5)
“Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.”
Explanation:
The friends brought their paralyzed friend for healing—but Jesus gave him forgiveness first. Why? Because sin is our greatest paralysis. Sin keeps us from walking in freedom, from standing in righteousness, from moving in purpose.
Illustration:
Have you ever had your phone freeze because of a virus or bad software? You press every button, but it won’t move. That’s how sin is—it freezes our lives spiritually. But Jesus clears the virus. He says, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”
Short Story:
In a courtroom, a young man stood guilty of theft. The judge, to everyone’s surprise, came down, paid the fine, and hugged the young man—because he was his son. That day, the judge upheld the law and gave forgiveness.
👉 Jesus is both Judge and Savior—He has the authority to forgive sins.
Takeaway:
Forgiveness is our greatest need—and Jesus is the only one who can grant it.
III. Jesus Heals the Broken (Mark 2:11–12)
“I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way into thine house.”
Explanation:
Jesus doesn't stop at forgiveness—He brings restoration. The man who came in through the roof walked out through the front door. What a picture of the gospel: brokenness brought in, wholeness brought out.
Illustration:
Think of a broken vase. You can glue it back together, but it’s never quite the same. But when Jesus heals, He makes you better than new. He doesn’t just restore you—He redeems your story.
Short Story:
A woman once came to church after years of addiction. She expected judgment but found love. Week after week, the Word washed her, and one day, she stood up and testified, “I came here broken, but now I stand healed.” She never went back.
Takeaway:
Jesus’ healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, spiritual, and relational.
Conclusion:
In Mark 2:1–12, we see the heart of the gospel:
- He preached the Word to feed the soul.
- He pardoned the sinner to free the heart.
- He healed the broken to restore the body and spirit.
