The Power of Limiting Beliefs
Speaker 1Want to know the biggest lie. We've all been told about changing our lives that transformation has to be hard. Well, here's the truth that changed everything for me. Your limiting beliefs aren't these massive concrete walls you need to tear down. They're more like old software running in the background of your mind. Look, I know you're aware you have limiting beliefs Everyone does. But here's what nobody tells you the very belief that change is difficult is your first roadblock. It's like having a loading screen stuck playing in your mind. So let me break this down.
Speaker 1Your beliefs are just thoughts, your thoughts. So many times they feel like facts. And every belief you currently live by was installed into your operating system, usually before the age of seven. And just like you can update your phone or computer software, you can also update these beliefs. But the real game changer is the moment you decide. Change can be easy, it becomes easy. It's not about pushing through resistance, it's about letting go of the idea that you need to push at all. You see, think about it. What if all your childhood experiences, all those layers of limiting beliefs, weren't actually barriers to change, but stepping stones that lead you right here to this moment of transformation? So here's your first takeaway from today's episode Before you try to change any other belief, start with this one. Transformation can be simple and natural, because here's the truth the only thing making change difficult is the belief that it has to be, so watch what happens when you let that go. If there was a guarantee that you could create your dream life, a life that truly mattered to you, would you want it? My name is Terri-Ann Palmer-Peacock and I am delighted to welcome you to the One Person Podcast. I have a belief that one person can make a difference in the world. When we show up as the best version of ourselves, when we create and live our dream lives, we make a positive impact on ourselves and the world around us. So if simple, actionable, step-by-step strategies, tools and tips on how to do that inspires you, then you are in the right place, my friend. So let's get started. The right place, my friend, so let's get started.
Speaker 1I started my full-time personal development journey back in 2006, almost 20 years ago now and for the most part, it's been a pretty magical journey. But, like many people who venture down this road, there was a time a few years ago that I felt like I was in personal development purgatory. The more I studied, the more I convinced myself I was the problem and that there was something wrong with me. If anything, instead of growing and moving forward, I was actually losing my confidence and self-esteem. Now, don't get me wrong. I still had a pretty good life, but there was an undercurrent where I was very unhappy, and I noticed that this was actually a common theme in the personal development world. I noticed at events and online, there were lots of other people who were attending seminars, reading books, meditating, journaling, setting goals and still asking themselves why am I still stuck? Why am I repeating these same patterns? Why haven't my results changed? Now I knew how to identify most of my limiting beliefs, and I also had the awareness for me to still be unhappy and to be spiraling in the wrong direction that the strategies and processes I had been using to change them were grossly ineffective. So I started asking different questions. Well, how do you change your brain? Is it even possible? How do you turn your inner critic into an inner cheerleader? And how do you do all of this without brute, forcing the issue or feeling like you need to figure it all out? Here's what I was 100% certain of, and I still am today your limiting beliefs manifest themselves into your experience of life through your thoughts.
Speaker 1For instance, if you believe that money is hard to make, you're going to have thoughts around how difficult it is to earn more money and how scarce money actually is. You're not going to have thoughts around how abundant and prosperous the universe is and, because of that, You're not going to have thoughts around how abundant and prosperous the universe is and, because of that, you're not going to have empowering or motivating thoughts that will actually lead to you making more money more easily. Now, the same is true for relationships. So, for example, if you're hoping to find yourself in a new relationship but you believe there's no good people left out there, well, you're not going to have thoughts and ideas that would lead to meeting your soulmate. You're probably going to stay at home and isolate yourself. Your beliefs determine your thoughts, your thoughts determine your emotions, your emotions determine the actions that you do or do not take, and your actions dictate your results. So, to take the example of money, if you believe that money is easy to make, you're going to naturally inspire thoughts of making more money, which are going to make you feel motivated and inspired, and that's going to cause you to take actions aligned with making more money easily. Think about it like cause and effect your beliefs, your thoughts and emotions are the cause, and your actions and the outcomes are the effect.
Speaker 1So how do we get these beliefs in the first place? Well, for the most part, we get them through osmosis as children before the age of seven. Now, in NLP we call it the imprint period, the 25 billion synaptic connections you're born with, quadruple to 100 billion throughout our early years. Now what's happening is that you're recording every experience in your life the sights, smells, sounds, touches, tastes and all of that data is getting sent through your nervous system to your brain. Now, in addition to forming all these new connections in your brain, you're also unconsciously giving them a meaning. Now, keep in mind before the age of about seven, you have no ability to distinguish between fantasy and reality and you don't have the wisdom of experience. In those early years either, the meaning that you assign to all that data you take in becomes the foundation for the lens through which you perceive reality as you move into adulthood and over time, you strengthen that belief system by collating evidence for its validity and because you now have continued evidence according to the still limited interpretation of your prefrontal cortex, that original belief you installed becomes true for you in your reality. So think of it as one big misunderstanding from childhood that you now carry with you. In adulthood, whatever you've identified to be a limiting belief whether it's that money is hard to make, people can't be trusted or you're not good enough In fact, that's one of the probably most common limiting beliefs most people carry. It is now dictating the lens through which you experience your life in the present moment. So let me give you an example.
Speaker 1A client of mine was talking about a time where she was helping her dad cut firewood with her siblings. Now, she was only three or four years old at the time and she couldn't carry much. But she would keep getting under the feet of her older siblings and in their frustration, one of them turned to her and said you're useless, get out of the way. Now that comment was just a friendly jest, but it was anchored in. And a few months later, when she was given the responsibility by that same sibling of holding a little puppy Now I just put some context around this. They lived on a farm and at the time they were moving cows from one paddock to the next Well, holding on to this excited puppy. Well, the puppy got scared with the bigger animals and it wiggled its way free and ran straight under the wheels of the four-wheel dry quad bike. Its way free and ran straight under the wheels of the four-wheel dry quad bike.
Speaker 1Now, because the puppy got injured, she thought in that moment and made the decision I am useless and of no value to anyone. Now, it was an unconscious decision that she made at the time, but she kept making that decision over and over again. Anytime she had an experience even remotely similar to that, where things were going well and she was enjoying herself, and then a problem arose. She automatically pulled back and disengaged, thinking I can't help here, I'm of no value, I'm useless. It happened at school when she couldn't get the answer to a simple maths equation, and in her business when she needed to change her marketing because the market had changed what they wanted, she took it to mean it was all her, she was the problem. She believed she was useless.
Speaker 1Now bear with me as we venture down the rabbit hole just a little bit here. This is going to make all the difference in your ability to change your beliefs, because if you've been trying to transform your beliefs and you've had a challenge doing it, it's probably because you feel like you're working with something that's invisible. When we're working with limiting beliefs, you can't see, touch or taste your thoughts. You can't see, hear or taste the emotions, so in many ways, a limiting belief feels like an airy-fairy cloud, which then begs the question how do you grab hold of it to work with it or to transform it? Well, here's the science. Every limiting belief you have, whether it's about money, growth, deserving success or your capabilities, is literally a neural network in your brain. It's a physical pathway that's been strengthened over time, but the good news, your brain is incredibly adaptable. The scientific term is neuroplasticity, but here's what it means for you you can literally rewire these pathways, and no, it doesn't have to take years of therapy or endless affirmations.
Speaker 1Beliefs are just decisions. So consider this we all know how to make decisions right. We make them every day, all day. It's a fairly straightforward concept to grasp. Now you might not know how to create a belief out of thin air, but you can make different decisions. You can decide to leave a job, end a relationship, ask for a raise, change a tire, make lasagna for dinner. It's easy, right? And if all of that's true, well, you can change a limiting belief simply by making a new decision right now. Sounds too good to be true? Well, I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but it really is as simple as that.
Speaker 1Now I do have a caveat here. Some beliefs are more challenging to change than others, but that's only because they're harder to identify in their entirety. Our unconscious mind can be a tricky little sucker and hide our true beliefs from us. The challenging part is actually becoming aware of them. So, for the most part and for most of your beliefs, this will work for you. Now. This is a simple but powerful process.
Speaker 1I'm going to share with you that I'm calling for the purpose of this podcast episode, the Entrepreneur's Reset Protocol. So this isn't thinking about positively or positive thinking, and it's not forcing yourself to believe something new. It's actually about rewiring your success operating system by transforming your limiting beliefs into something more empowering and aligned with the life you want. And to do that in its simplest form is to think in term of opposites. So if you believe money is hard to make, just decide that money is easy to make and abundance flows to you. If you believe that you have to do everything yourself. That's a common one of mine that I was working on. Decide that collaborating with others is the most effective way to create extraordinary results, and let me tell you, they do.
Speaker 1If you believe that you're never going to meet your soulmate, decide that the man or woman of your dreams is on their way into your life right now. Now, when I share this with people for the first time, I'm typically met with a response that sounds something like okay, terri-ann, sounds great, but I don't need to know how to do it. How do I make more money? How do I start trusting everyone? How do I attract my dream partner? The how doesn't matter. The truth is, you have to make the decision first. The how comes later and it comes with much less effort if you make the decision first. Why? Because your dictates belief, your thoughts which dictate your emotions, which dictate your actions, and your actions are the how which dictate your results. And, of course, most people get this backwards. I've talked about this on multiple episodes already in this podcast.
Speaker 1As soon as you make a decision that's the opposite of your limiting belief you start to imagine it. In fact, we're all using our imagination all of the time, whether we realize it or not, but most people are imagining the same future, one that's largely undesirable, and they're doing it over and over again. So it's important that you know that you don't need to know how to do something when you can start to imagine it, because, as you imagine it, your brain doesn't know the difference between it actually happening or you imagining it. And you start to imagine it Because, as you imagine it, your brain doesn't know the difference between it actually happening or you imagining it and you start to build the new neurosynaptic connections. So remember, this isn't just physiological oh gosh, I'm getting tongue tied over my words now it's not just psychological, it's neurological as well. Studies have shown that your brain doesn't distinguish between a vividly imagined experience or a real one. So when you start operating from your new decision, your brain creates new neural pathways as if it's already happened. Your brain has the capacity to build a memory of an experience in your future that has not yet happened, mind blown right Now. Here's what's fascinating about this process it creates what I'm calling the success acceleration effect.
Speaker 1When you make a new decision, your brain's reticular activating system, or RAS, for short starts filtering for evidence that supports this new belief. You literally begin seeing opportunities you were blind to before. Now, consider any desire you have, whether it's meeting your soulmate, making a million dollars or anything in between. If you had already achieved it, wouldn't you know how you'd done it? Of course you would, but again, this reinforces the fact that you don't need to know how to do something and the importance of still making a new decision. Remember, refer back to my early episodes where I talk about structure for this one Now, because when you make a new decision, you begin to unlock your capacity to imagine and visualize and you start to build memories of a future that hasn't happened yet.
Speaker 1Your brain literally forms new neural connections and allows your mind to tap into the thoughts, ideas, perceptions and emotions that are aligned with that desired outcome. So the moment you make a new decision, you'll start noticing evidence for that new decision and you'll stop paying attention to the evidence that has been supporting the old, false, limiting belief. The moment you make a new decision, three incredible things happen. Number one you start to have new thoughts and ideas. You literally start to be able to access thoughts and ideas and align with the new decision or the belief. Number two your perception of reality changes. There's that part of your brain, the reticular activating system, that causes us to filter out about 80 to 90 percent of everything that's going on around us, but the 10 percent that we actually pay attention to is what is in alignment with our beliefs. So you start to find evidence to support whatever it is that you believe. And, number three, your new beliefs begin to inform your unconscious mind. The things that might seem like synchronicities or coincidences remember, I don't believe in coincidences are actually micro decisions that you're making on a daily basis that add up so that you can begin to experience that which you believe.
Speaker 1So here's a simple, quick exercise that will help you transform your beliefs. I want you if you're driving, you might have to do this when you get home. So what I want you to do is get a piece of paper and draw on it three columns. Now, in the first column, I want you to write out your limiting beliefs. Now, in the first column, I want you to write out your limiting beliefs. What are the thoughts you're having in relation to the experiences you don't like or you don't want in your life? Write them down Now.
Speaker 1It might be things like I won't be able to do this because I'm not capable. This works for others, but not for me. I'm resistant to letting go of control. Nobody wants what I have. I'll never have a soulmate. I can be lucky in love or lucky in wealth, but not both. All right, you get the drift. Write down your limiting beliefs.
Speaker 1Step two is the second column. All right, I want you to write down your new decision and remember just think in opposites. So if it's I don't have enough time I have plenty of time I can't trust anyone. Well, I can trust most people. I'll never attract a soulmate. My soulmate is out there and we're on path to finding each other. I won't be able to do it because I'm not capable. I am fully capable and resourceful enough to succeed in anything I commit to. Nobody wants what I have. What I have is unique and valuable, and there are people out there who are eager to benefit from it. Right, you get the drift. Then the final step in the third column.
Speaker 1Step three what evidence do you have for your new decision? Now, this one might take a little bit of practice for some people. Remember, up until now, your RAS has been filtering out all the evidence for your new empowering, limiting decision, because it was gathering evidence for your disempowering decision. So, now that you have flipped it, sit and think for a moment. What supporting evidence do you already have for the fact that your new decision is true?
Speaker 1Remember, this third step will activate parts of your brain that have been dormant for a while, and it's those parts that hold the memories that will support this new decision. And, before you know it, once you access them, you'll have a whole list of evidence that's essentially going to debunk any truth that you've given or that you've been giving to your old limiting beliefs. For example, if you previously believed that money is hard to make, but you make a new decision, that you're a magnet for abundance, you need to start thinking about all the times and situations, the experiences and the circumstances in your life that support that new belief. That evidence can be found in the fact that you're listening to this podcast right now. You've probably got a car. You're wearing shoes and clothes. You're listening to this on a device somehow, and devices aren't cheap nowadays. If it's at night time, are the lights on? Well, that means your bills are getting paid. So what you need to do is you need to count all of these little nuanced things that support your new decision that money is, in fact, not hard to make and you've been abundant all along. Now remember, for some of these it's going to be a bit challenging because it's going to take some practice and you might need to dig a little deep here. You may face some resistance in this process, but I guarantee that if you make a new decision, you'll find a myriad of evidence to support it, whether it's around money, time, relationships, health, you name it. So here's what I want you to really hear today.
Speaker 1Your next level of success isn't about working harder or knowing more. It's about removing the invisible barriers that you've placed in your own way. You've already proven you can be successful. You've already shown you have what it takes. Now it's time to make new decisions that align with your true potential. Well, this is already one of my favorite podcast episodes and I hope it becomes one of yours as well. If it is, leave me a review, because reviews help me get seen by more people, and the more people we can impact together with this knowledge, the better world we all get to live in. Now, finally, I'm pointing to myself right now. You're here and you're listening to me. You've got me in your corner. I believe in your potential probably more than you believe in it yourself right now, but that's okay, because sometimes we all need that one person who sees our greatness before we can fully see it ourselves. Until next time, keep pushing boundaries, keep growing and remember your next level of success is just one decision away.
