We all want a Glow Up - especially after a break up or a difficult season.   I'm talking about knowing things like knowing your face shape and body type.  These things will help guide you in trying new styles and finding the very best you!

Here is a link to the website that really details how to find your body type via measurements and then in turn the best way to dress for it:

Hello, my name is Tiffany, and welcome to the podcast Working on Amazing. This is a podcast where we talk about the work that it takes to rebuild an amazing life.

And I am using that word rebuild specifically, because we're designed for women who feel like they're starting over in the middle of their life. If that's you, I just wanna say I'm sorry.

I know how overwhelming and itchy it feels when the rug has been pulled out from under your feet, and it really does. It feels like you're starting over. I'm here to tell you, though, that you're not starting from scratch.

You are starting from experience. You know more than you did back in your early 20s when you were just starting out. You know so much more now.

You have experience. I promise you, it gets better. You are not alone.

You're actually in the right place, so welcome. I'm so glad you're with us today. Let's get down to today's episode.

If you'll remember, in the beginning, I said I focused on five areas when I rebuilt my life. I focused on my spiritual health, my mental health, my physical health, my financial health, and growth and goals.

And in that first episode, when I talked about physical health, I said it encompassed like, of course, diet and exercise, but it also encompassed our physical appearance. So today's episode, we're gonna talk about the glow up, right?

Okay, so you looked at women before who've gone through a breakup or gone through a major life thing, and then you're like, they had a glow up. You've even looked at pictures from high school to college. Ooh, she had a glow up.

If you've been through a major difficult season in your life, you really wanna have a glow up. You wanna say, hey, I'm better off for this. It's, I think, a piece of it's psychological.

But how do we achieve that glow up? And if you've gone through a divorce, and you're considering the possibility of, maybe will I date again, will I not?

Maybe a glow up is important because you're thinking, I hadn't been on the dating market in forever. That's how I felt like I had been married 20 years. So starting to date again was super intimidating, because I hadn't done that in 20 years.

And then I had aged since that last time that I had been dating. So how do you make yourself, how do you kind of reinvent yourself in your physical appearance and the way you present yourself to other people?

So we're going to talk about that some today. Please take everything I say with a grain of salt. The whole idea is for you to be proud of who you are.

I have no desire to promote some weird standard of beauty. Beauty is found in all kinds of things, and beauty is very, very subjective. So there's not, this isn't a one size fits all.

This is so you feel good about yourself, okay? Please, please, please hear me on that.

We're just going to talk about some ideas and some thoughts to freshen your look up so that you feel good about yourself, especially if you're going to put yourself out there. Maybe think about starting to date again.

I want you to feel good and confident about the way you present yourself, okay? Good deal.

So, step one, and I'm going to say this first, because we're going to get into a lot of details about your face shape and your hair and your body shape and the way clothes fit. We're going to get into all that.

But the first thing that is going to affect your appearance is going to sound so silly. But when you are genuinely happy, you glow from the inside. It makes such a difference.

So, find a way to be happy. Find a goal to start working towards that you're excited about. Find a way to lift your spirits on your own.

Does that make sense? I know a relationship helps. I get that.

But there's so much that we can do on our own. And sometimes when you're working towards a goal, and you're doing something, it does. It changes your countenance.

I'm wanting to write a book. I'm working on it continually. I'm wanting to get a new degree.

I'm working on my masters. When you have a goal in something that you look forward to, that puts your focus in the future, and that really does show in your countenance. When you're happy, when your last episode, why you need to laugh, right?

Rewind and listen to the last episode where we talk about finding different things to make us smile, different things to make us laugh. This really, really affects your appearance.

When you just are at peace with who you are, and at peace with life, and you're not so angry and aggravated, it shows, it shows from the inside out. And I understand if you're angry and aggravated.

Believe it or not, I went through my angry era, and it was a few years where I was just so angry.

And when I finally let go of my anger, and when it was just me and my kids, and I was in such a toxic, unsafe relationship, I could finally feel safe, and I could finally feel let go of some of my anger, it changed my countenance. It really did.

When you looked at me, I looked different, and that is an internal change, okay? So the first change we're gonna talk about about your glow up is that internal change, okay? And that is a little bit different for everybody.

Getting out of a really negative relationship sometimes, that alone will do it. Like for me, just not being constantly there, that made a big difference. Letting go of all that anger, that made a difference.

So figuring those things out, that mental health aspect really does shine through in your countenance. And I would be remiss if I didn't say that, because that is a huge, huge piece of the glow up in my personal opinion, okay?

But let's get down to some of the other like, tactile things that have to do with our appearance, and how we can shift and change them, and maybe make our appearance, freshen it up, okay?

Have you ever seen those things like on Facebook, like before and after, and just a haircut can totally change the way somebody looks, right? And you're like, well, what haircut do I need? What?

Oh, my word, that looked totally, she looks totally different, but how do I know what I need? Okay, so the first thing I want to tell you is you need to get familiar with you, okay?

So you need to know what your face shape is, you need to know what your body shape is, you need to know your skin tone, your undertone, things like that.

So let's break some of those things down so you can get familiar with you, because there's a few different face shapes, right? And your haircut is going to be a little bit dependent on your face shape, okay?

So you can have an oval shape, you can have a round shape, you can have a square shape, a heart shape, or a diamond shape.

Now, I would encourage you to Google this, maybe look at a YouTube video if you're really unsure about how to know what your face shape is.

But one of the common things they tell you to do is to look at yourself in the mirror, pull your hair back, especially if you have bangs or something, hair that falls close to your face, pull your hair back and look at the widest point of your face.

So a good indicator is if the widest point of your face is your cheekbones, then you're maybe more likely to have a diamond or oval shaped face. That kind of makes sense, right? If your forehead is the widest, maybe you have a heart shape.

If your jawline and your forehead are the same width, they line up really well, maybe you have a square shape. Like I said, if you really, really are unsure, I would encourage you to like look at a YouTube video.

Some people say like when you look at yourself in the mirror, you can kind of do an outline with a dry erase marker or Sharpie on the mirror. And maybe that would help you visualize it better. But we all have different face shapes, right?

I mean, there's a few different ones. So then when you know what your face shape is, the next step would say, all right, what haircut looks best on a heart shaped face? What haircut?

I have a round face, so I have to be really careful. When I was younger, I would cut my hair short, and I would have a short face, really short hair. And it never looked good on me.

It accentuated how round my face was. But I knew some other people who had short haircuts, and it looked so good on them. And I was trying to copy what they were doing, but it didn't translate well on me because I had a different shaped face.

So you can't just say, oh, that person, I like their hair. You've got to make sure that it's going to translate well on your shape of face.

So once you get a good idea of, okay, I have a heart shaped face or an oval shaped face, then you can kind of say, okay, what hairstyles look good on this? The shape, you know, do I need bangs? Do I not need bangs?

Do I need, you know, what is going to carry well? Because there's some things that just don't translate well. Like I said, I have a round face, and short hair just did not, it just accentuated it, and it made my, it didn't work.

That's all I know how to say. I do better with hair around my face, I feel like. So Google some ideas.

The other thing, if you wear glasses, whether it's just sunglasses, or you wear prescription glasses frequently, maybe you could also Google, what style frames look good on my face shape? I have a heart shaped face, what style frames look good?

Because sometimes, you know, there's that cat eye style of glasses, it looks so cute, you get sunglasses or prescription glasses, but certain face shapes are gonna pull that off better than others.

So just take the time to get to know who yourself, your body type, your face type, and say, okay, if I know this, then let's get things specific to this. What haircut, what glasses look good for this, okay?

The other thing, when you're thinking about haircut, and we need to discuss this separately with like makeup and updating our look, but when you look at your skin tone, what skin tone do I have?

Well, really pale skin is going to pull off different hair colors differently. So if you're looking to change your hair color, not only do you want to cut, but maybe you want to switch up your color.

I went blonde for a while, but I was blonde as a child, and they say you can go back to the color you were as a kid. And I did blonde for a while after my divorce. I thought that was fun.

But you can also kind of look at your skin tone. Is my skin tone, am I really tanned? Do I have darker skin or fairer skin?

And what type of color is going to play best with my skin tone? And these are all things you can just take the time to Google. But you got to know your face shape, and you got to know your skin tone if you're going to change the color of your hair.

OK? Does that make sense? OK.

Then another thing, and this is too much for me to go into all the details here, but I want to talk to you about your body type. And I'm going to put this link in the comments because I think it's such a great article.

But it's on the website, thewelldressedlife.com. OK? And this particular article is how to dress for your body shape.

It's an easy guide. So there are five main body shapes. There's rectangle, round, hourglass, pair, and inverted triangle.

And what's really cool about this article, it says get a tape measure, and you measure, and it tells you exactly where to measure. It gives like great details. If your measurements fall between this and this, it tells you what category.

So it's really kind of simple to calculate based on if I measure my hips, my waist, my bust, my shoulders, this is the category of my body type. OK?

Then what's really great is once you know your body type, there's also links to say, OK, this style, this type of clothing looks best on this body type.

I see all the time you find a model wearing something, you see it online, it's advertised to you on your news feed, on social media, and you're like, oh my gosh, that's so cute. But you buy it and try it on, and it does not look the same.

Most likely, that model had a very different body type than you. So instead of looking at what everybody else is wearing and trying to duplicate it, let's get to know ourself and what looks best on our shape. Right?

Because we do all come in different shapes and sizes. And you can wear something that really accentuates the great qualities you have and make you look amazing.

It just might not be what your best friend wears, because chances are, they have a different body type than you.

So it's all about figuring out who you are, and dressing and styling yourself in such a way to accentuate your positive features and your positive qualities and making that shine.

So knowing your face shape, knowing your body type will then let you decide, hey, you know what? I want to pull off a totally different haircut. I want to pull off a totally different style.

Now, I will say, if you have a really good friend, some friends are better about this than others, but sometimes you can go shopping with somebody that just has a really good eye for fashion, and they can push you out of your comfort zone and get you

to try on different clothes. And even once you know your body type and they say, okay, these styles, these types of clothing will work better on your body type, you still need to go to the store and just try things on. You can't just order online.

Okay? You've got to go to the store. If it says this style of pants, wide leg, if it says a certain style of blouse, or this, or that, you gotta go try them on.

And be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Like, we all get in a rut. We get in a rut with the way we do our hair, we get in a rut with the clothes we wear, and the makeup we put on.

And the whole idea of a glow up is stepping outside of that rut. Maybe doing something different with our hair, maybe doing something different with our clothes, wearing something a little bit different than what we normally do.

Like, we're trying to freshen it up, right? And look a little bit different, and just see what that's like. So, just take a day where you're like, you know what, this is what I'm going to do today.

I'm going to try on different things. I'm going to go to the store, and I'm going to try on different things. Don't wear something that you're going to be uncomfortable in.

If, you know, somebody says, oh, high heels will really accentuate your figure, and you hate walking in high heels, don't buy that, you know? Find something that works for you, that also works style-wise for your body type.

Does that make sense, what I'm saying? So don't go so far out of your comfort zone that you're completely uncomfortable. If you are a fairly modest person, don't go showing a lot of cleavage.

That's going to make you feel uncomfortable, okay?

So stay within what makes you comfortable, whatever that is, whether it's like just I feel uncomfortable showing too much cleavage, or I'm physically going to be uncomfortable wearing high heels, please take that into account.

And when I say, let's push outside of our comfort zone and try new things, go to the store and try on all kinds of new things. I mean, like wide range, right?

You can try something that shows off more cleavage in the store, and then make the decision, you know what? I will or won't be comfortable in this, out in the real world.

If I wore this to work, if I wore this out, how comfortable would I or wouldn't I be? Take into account your body type, but also take into account your comfort level.

And I am confident that you can find things that are both, okay, that meet your personal comfort level, and that really accentuate your personal body type, okay?

Next thing, so we've talked about face shape, we've talked about hair, like looking up different things, hairstyles that work with your particular face shape, body shape, trying on clothes for your body type, right? These things are so important.

The next thing is freshening up your makeup look.

So, a lot of us learned how to do makeup in high school, and we just kind of do the same thing, which is completely normal, and it's okay, but maybe it's time to freshen it up, to step up your game, to try something new.

There's so many new products out there. I am overwhelmed. So, my oldest daughter works in this industry.

She has worked for MAC, and Urban Decay, and it, and she helps me out so much. I appreciate her. If you don't have a daughter that works in the beauty industry, I'm going to tell you what to do.

I would recommend you go into a store, like if you go into Ulta, go to the Prestige side, where they have the more expensive makeup, and find somebody who can color match you, and say, I am looking to update my look, and you need to be able to tell

them a few things, okay? Because they're going to ask you questions to match you with some good products. So you need to be able to decide, do you want a full face of makeup?

That is a lot of work, but I tend to put on pretty much a full face, but I just don't do it heavy, right? So do you want a lighter look? Do you want, you know, what overall style are you going for?

Like, I want to look made up, but kind of mostly natural. And then they're going to be able to pick a foundation, a heavy foundation, a light foundation, but they're going to be able to match your skin tone.

And then the other thing, you have skin tone and you have undertones. So I have red undertones. My skin gets very pink, so I'm fair skinned.

And then those pink undertones can pop up really easily. Like, so if I get flushed, if I, you know, I can just walk up the stairs and you'll see red on my cheeks pretty easily.

But whether it's cold, whether it's an emotional, like I get a little embarrassed or whatever, I get, I can get flushed and that pink undertone pops up. But there are other undertones that are, you know, all kinds of things.

You can have more of a yellow undertone. So knowing that is gonna help. They, and they can tell you, you don't have to know everything.

You may know, but they can help match you with a foundation and then know which colors work best for your skin tone, your undertone, all of that. They're gonna be able to help match you. Like, I just wear like a little bit of brown eyeshadow.

I don't get into all the colors, but some people really can. And they can say, okay, these colors are gonna coordinate the best with your skin tone. This color of blush, this color of lipstick is gonna really look good on you.

And be willing to listen to them. And you can even go so far as to say, hey, this is my budget. I don't have an over-the-top budget.

Don't give me the highest prestige brand. And if it's somebody in that side who knows how to color match, they can tell you the products you can save money on. Well, ELFE.

Cosmetics, well, ColourPop, well, you know, on the cheaper side, these are over here on the other side of the store, and they're really cheap, and you can fill in with these cheaper cosmetics.

So if you can just get to talking to somebody, which I know is hard and intimidating, and there's so many overwhelming options, but if you start with like, hey, can you color match me? This is my price point. I'm wanting to update my look.

I just need help. And they can help you with everything from, do you wanna figure out how to wear false eyelashes? I only wear false eyelashes on really special occasions.

I'm not good at them. But maybe you do have an event coming up, and you think that would look really cool. They, you know, somebody could really help and direct you.

You just need to speak to somebody who's knowledgeable, who understands the way the product is. Well, this product is gonna be more cakey on your face. Do you have oily skin or dry skin?

Are you concerned with aging? You know, all these things, they're gonna ask you a lot of questions. So kind of be prepared.

What do you know? Don't go in without any answers. You gotta know some things, right?

And you gotta say, hey, this is my budget. Like, I don't wanna walk out of here and drop $500. I can't do that.

And they're gonna tell you, okay, if you have to spend the, you know, the one product, if you're gonna buy expensive on one product, it's probably gonna be your foundation, right? Because everything kinda layers on top of that.

But if you can save money, you can save money on eyeshadow, or brow pencils, or maybe lipstick. So here's the way we're gonna divide it out. I strongly encourage you to just go in and talk to somebody.

Hopefully, you'll get a good person. Hopefully, you'll get somebody like my daughter. Oh, my gosh, she loves to walk people through all this stuff.

She's so knowledgeable. But you can go to Sephora's, Ulta's, they have that.

And the thing I would encourage you about going there versus like a department store, if you go to a department store, you're only going to get the information about a single brand.

If you go to somewhere like Ulta or Sephora, you're going to get information about multiple brands. So they could say, hey, I want to put you in this foundation. I think this is really good.

You could save money over here with this eyeshadow and this eyeliner. And you can mix and match, you got multiple products. But if you just go to the MAC counter, they're just going to sell you MAC products.

So my advice would be to go somewhere like Ulta or Sephora, where they have a wide range of products. And then you can kind of pick and choose what you think works best for you.

But sometimes somebody who doesn't really know you super well or is outside of your head can see things differently than you can and be like, hey, try this color, let's maybe do this. So be willing just to hear what they have to say.

You don't have to make a purchase that day if you don't want to. But listen and hear and be open to maybe applying your makeup differently. I had to learn to start contouring, and that intimidated me.

And I watched a lot of YouTube videos about it. But putting the darker makeup, like at my cheekbones and at my hairline, and on my nose to kind of help my nose be a little bit whatever, it really works.

Be willing to listen and learn new application techniques and new ideas. Okay, so just walking into the store and talking to somebody might be your first step. If you feel a little frustrated with who you talk to, start looking at YouTube videos.

There's so many beauty influencers, but just know you have to know your skin tone. And somebody at a makeup counter is going to help you know what your skin tone and then your undertone is. Okay.

And so much of your makeup is going to spring from knowing some of those basic things. So the idea is we want to freshen up our look, right?

So whether it's hair and the same thing with makeup with hair, be willing to talk to your hairdresser and say, hey, I want a new look. I realize that I have a diamond shaped face. I think these three hairstyles might look good.

What do you think? They do that for a living. They cut hair, they color hair.

They look at hair on people all the time. Their opinion should actually have some weight with you because they see it day in and day out, right? So if you say, hey, I kind of narrowed it down to these three styles, what do you think?

I bet they would give you some good advice, okay? I'm kind of thinking about switching out my color. What do you think?

They would have some good advice because this is what they do for a living. They see it day in and day out. Makeup, same thing.

They see it day in and day out. So listen to what people in their industry have to say and be willing to try something new. Test it out.

See, is that going to work for me? Maybe it will, maybe it won't. I think experimenting just a little bit, you don't have to go drastic, like over the top.

I think when I colored my hair blonde, it took like a year to get blonde. So it can be slow and gradual, but it's fun to try something new.

And I looked totally different from the very end of my marriage, and I was just depressed and sad, and I gained weight. And then I started working on losing weight, because the weight that I gained wasn't who I was.

I gained it from depression, and I knew that. And so I worked on losing my weight. I worked on all these things, like I figured out how to do contouring, you know, with my makeup.

I went blonde with my hair. I just did. And none of it felt like overly drastic, like, because blonde, that sounds like a big shift, but it was over time.

And my makeup was subtle changes. It didn't look like massively different. It just was subtly different.

But all together, all of these things made a huge difference in my confidence and the way I projected myself to the world. And I went from feeling almost mousy and like a mom who was in a rut, to, hey, I really am a woman.

And it made a big difference. It just really, really did. So I just encourage you.

Once again, the first thing I said was being happy. When you truly are at peace and you're happy and you're not sad and full of anxiety and all that anger and things like that, when you're at peace, you really do glow from the inside out.

I promise you. It's an intangible thing, but people pick up on it. And it has so much to do with the way you project yourself to the world.

Work on that. Figure it out. Listen to my previous podcast, the ones about mental health, why you should laugh, things like that.

Really work on finding that inner stability, right? And I know it's hard. I'm not saying that that's easy.

And then work on knowing who you are, your face shape, your body shape, your skin tone, and make changes with those specific things to you in mind. This is my face shape. Any shape can be beautiful.

Let's just dress it appropriately, and enclose it way well on that shape, enclose it, accentuate that specific body type. I think you are beautiful. I know you're beautiful.

You are made in the image of God. I want you to know you're beautiful. I want you to feel confident.

I want you to feel secure in who you are. And that projection, when you feel that, the projection you have to the world, affects so many things. And it's not even just your dating life.

You think, I want to look good so I can date again. But even job opportunities, and the people you meet, and the friends you make, and the interactions you have just out in the world are all affected by the way you project yourself.

And it's really, really important to get that mojo back, down deep, to know that you are beautiful, and to believe that. And so these are little surface things that you can do. But the bottom line is, I want you to believe it down deep.

I want you to know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are beautiful. I want you to have that confidence. And sometimes, if just a hair cut, or a clothing style change, has you believe in that, it's worth it, okay?

I promise you it is. You have been beautiful all along. But let's feel it.

Let's walk in it. Let's glow. Let's have our glow up.

I know you are beautiful, and I can't wait to see your glow up. So if you have good glow up pictures, I would love for you to share them with me. I'll probably put mine on Facebook.

But you can hit me up. I'm on the World Wide Web, so you can find me at www.workingonamazing.com. I'm on most all social medias, but like I said, I hang out on Facebook the most.

Show me your glow up. What are you working on? Hit me up with your questions like, okay, you said this, but what I really want to know about is this.

Get into details, whether it's moisturizers and face creams, there's so many fun things to talk about with that. I love it. So hit me up with your questions.

Hit me up with your glow up. I would love to see your pictures. Thank you so much for joining me today.

I really enjoyed talking to you, and I look forward to talking to you next time. Bye.
