Thanks for listening to Real Talk! Come back next week as we break down all the action from NFL Week 2 and the biggest college games.
And welcome everybody to another episode of Real Talk. Doc, you doing all right today.
Speaker 2:Yes, I am brother. It was an epic weekend, week one of the NFL season. You know two pretty good college games, but it was all about the NFL man. What a weekend I'm doing well 100%.
Speaker 1:So Chad does join us. He is Chad in California is coming back, so we'll talk about the week one in the NFL and the week two in the NCAA. So what's up, Chad? How you doing, man.
Speaker 3:What's going on, fellas, always a pleasure. Can't wait to get into it.
Speaker 1:Absolutely. Oh, chad it's a pleasure yeah. Yep, so before we dive into the NFL, doc, I know you have a little bit to talk about with the NCAA, so this is our segment.
Speaker 2:That, chad, you've always said that you love to get it off your chest. So without further ado, doc, the floor is yours. Yeah, man, I just hate to see the colleges. Man, there's no reason in the world for Ohio State to be playing Grambling. That's not football.
Speaker 2:70 to nothing, grambling is an HBCU. They don't even have close to the caliber of athlete that goes to Ohio State, a D1 program, major school. You don't need to see this kind of thing. Penn State blew somebody out 62 to nothing. Even Georgia playing little old Austin Peay. You know Arch Manning, the Texas Longhorns they play Arch Manning, look good scoring against Division II or Division III athletes.
Speaker 2:But the Ohio State thing bothers me, man. These ADs and other administrators scheduling somebody like Grambling. You know HBCU 70 tonight. Yeah, no joke, you're going to put up 70 on them. Man, the poor kids at Grambling. They got to live through that. I know the school gets money and millions and all that, but that's not football, you know. You don't need to see that. If you're a college football fan, especially if you're a student at Ohio State, you know, I know it looks good 70 to nothing. But who did you play? You know, but that's about it. Man, that's really bad. You know I don't like schools doing that and you know signing up stats All right, man, you might look like trash against ohio state, but ohio state goes out and play grammy puts up 70, you know, so I don't know that's just me, yeah.
Speaker 1:Thoughts on that chat I disagree.
Speaker 3:I get it from the fan perspective. I mean you're looking at it, you don't want to see that game at all but at the same time, doc, that's how people are paying their bills, man. I mean you really want to look at it. That's how grambling's keeping the lights on. And you're talking about kids at grambling who got to share the field with jeremiah smith, with julian sand and all these. You know guys who are going to be pros one day. They're going to tell their kids, man, you know I played against, you know, jeremiah smith. I lined up again. He put 100 on my head but you know, daddy played against them.
Speaker 3:Like, I get what you're saying from a fan perspective, but I mean it's early on. You know there's no preseason in college football. So you got to look at it like this is kind of like a pseudo preseason game. And, like I said, from the other perspective, man, this is Grambling Super Bowl. They've had it on their calendar all year. We're going up against the defending national champions. Let's see what we got. Is it fun to watch? No, is it fun to bet on? Yeah, because you know they're going to cover that 45-point spread, doc.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I see your point there as far as the kids telling their grandkids and all that. But really, you know, it's one of those things, a moralistic issue with me. Ohio State noted if they wanted to put up 100. It's just not football to me, you know. But it goes noted. Chad, you know it goes noted. You and I can debate this. But yeah, go ahead, marlon. That's all I got on getting it off.
Speaker 1:Perfect, all right. So we're going to go touch into a couple games real quick. The Chargers and the Chiefs game this was a game that, going into into it, I think that we me, you and est, I believe doc picked the chargers, at least with the points. Um, so definitely thought this game would be close. Um, as a chargers fan, I did hope that we went it out right and we did um chad, I'll go ahead and start with you first. What were your thoughts initially going into the game and what were your thoughts, uh, after the game?
Speaker 3:so all off season I told you I believed in the Chargers. I told you that this division was going to be tough. I wanted to see how Kansas City was going to bounce back. This is the first time we've seen them play a meaningful football game since they got beat around on national TV in the Super Bowl. I put money on the Chiefs. I thought it's a game where Patrick Mahomes is going to come out and remind the world that he's still the man that Chiefs are going to remind the world that they're going to be right back where they belong, which is in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3:The last few years is what we've kind of been grown accustomed to see. And the Chargers came out and said no, we're not little brother anymore, we're right there on your level. You know what I mean. Little brother hit a growth spurt and got bigger. Now he's putting Big Brother in the chokehold and I'm shocked because usually under Brandon Staley, the Chargers lose this game by a field goal. They always find a way to lose by a field goal, right.
Speaker 3:And this is why you bring in Harbaugh, because Harbaugh makes that difference, that final difference. He makes Justin Herbert the best quarterback he could be and he looked great, by the way, keenan Allen didn't miss a step. I mean, he went to Chicago and we thought he was done. We thought he was going to retire. He looked horrible. He comes back and he looks like the Keenan Allen from 10 years ago. You know what I mean. So I'm impressed with the Chargers and it makes me. Did the Chiefs look horrible? No, but they looked vulnerable still. It really gives me hope as a Broncos fan in this division the Chiefs they might finish third in this division. When it's all said and done, it might be over. The dynasty might be over because the Chargers look for real.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it looks like they lost their receiver. And you know, not only did they lose Rice, who's serving a six-game suspension morning, but they lost Xavier Worthy too for a few weeks. So, yeah, it goes to the chat. I totally agree. I thought the Chargers would win. But listen, you know, when you lose Slater, the big tackle, and you have to boot Joe Alter left tackle. I thought that might be a little problematic, but Justin Herbert had one of the better games of his career over 300 yards and three touchdowns, and Omar Marion Hampton. You know he went out there and showed his wares and what he can do as a rookie running back against that Chiefs defense with Chris Jones and all that. That's a statement win in the division, even if it's overseas Marlon. So congratulations on that man. Good one for Justin Herbert man. He rebounded nicely from that four-interception to bottom in the playoffs just last postseason. Good job on judgment for her. The skills are there.
Speaker 1:Yep Statement win with the offensive line we didn't know how we were going to hold up. Joe Wall played great going up against Chris Jones and other weapons. They put his way. The defense did decent. I know Kelsey got off for one and you're going to have some of those blown coverages here and there. It is just week one but yeah, making a huge statement, this was a quote-unquote home game for us, so thankfully it was not in LA because that whole so far would have been read it out. But yeah, it was a great win for us. We got the Raiders Monday night, so definitely looking forward to that and hopefully going into playing the Broncos, week three being 2-0.
Speaker 1:Okay, so really quick before we get into the picks Dallas in the opening weekend, dallas and the Eagles they had the lightning issue and after the storm lightning nothing happened essentially other than CD dropping that pass towards the end. So, doc, I'll go ahead and start with you on this one. What are your thoughts on the Eagles? I don't think their defense was as sharp Doc, kind of in the first half he was able to move up the field easily. They ran the ball pretty good with Williams. So what are your thoughts on this Eagles defense and are they going to be the? I know they're missing some people, but are they going to be the Eagles defense that we saw last year?
Speaker 2:I know they're missing some people, but are they going to be the Eagles defense that we saw last year? Well, I feel like Jalen Carter did the most stupidest thing, ignoramus thing that you could do and spit it on an opposing player before the kickoff could start. You know, and it's one of those things where, from that point on, the Eagles were stifled, they were shuffling on defense man, but Dak had his way starting the game out. You know, dak Prescott, you know it's one of those things where you pull for the Eagles, but stupid stuff. And he happened to go to the University of Georgia. He had some question marks coming into the league with some character issues dealing with Athens and what transpired back then three years ago. But to do that man, you know, I thought he could have got two game suspension for doing something like that. He's a great player, all pro player.
Speaker 2:But to answer your question directly, you know Dallas should have won the game. If CeeDee Lamb makes two or three of those catches out of the four drops, dallas wins that game, man. And then, you know, jalen Hurst did what he had to do. They did miss Micah Parsons because Jalen Hurst was wide open and some of those bootleg screen runs and you know there was nobody to attack him. You know Micah Parsons would have tracked him down. You know that's what he does.
Speaker 2:You saw it in the Green Bay game this past Sunday against Detroit. So I don't know why Jerry Jones was tripping there. But Dallas is going to be formidable in that division from what we just saw on a sample size. But the eagles are the champs and, being at home you know they did stutter a little bit but the jaylen carter thing bothers and especially, being a georgia bulldog fan and you know credit to, uh, the rookie linebacker, johan campbell and jordan davis and some of the other defenders step up in the second half. But it all came down to cd lambee Lamb dropping those passes. Chad, you know what I'm saying, your call.
Speaker 3:Yeah, and you make a good point on Carter. I mean, if Carter tears his ACL in the preseason, the Eagles are game-planning differently and they're coming into that game with a plan. When you get blindsided like that after the kickoff and you're walking your defense on the field and all of a sudden your best defensive player is told to leave, you can't game plan for that. You have to do it on the fly and I think the cowboys did a great job of taking advantage of that. I think dallas's offense is going to be one of the best in the league this year. I think they're really potent. They brought in, you know, pickings on the outside. That's a compliment. Lamb williams had a good pep in his step. Obviously, coming from denver, you haven't seen that since he was a rookie.
Speaker 3:Before the ACL injury, dak Prescott looked really good and I think at times he gets a lot of unfair criticism. And let's be honest, you're playing quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. It's the number one position that every kid wants to play. Since he's a little kid, you want to play quarterback for the Cowboys. I mean, we all grew up in the era where you know 80s and 90s. It was the Cowboys were America's team, where you know 80s and 90s it was the Cowboys, were America's team and you wanted that star on your helmet. So it's going to be criticism unfair or not. I think Dak is better than what people think he is. That game he was really playing his ass off. He was hitting his throws. He put the ball in good spots, not only for land. There was a couple times he hit his tight ends and double coverage right on the hands and they dropped it.
Speaker 3:But, like you said, with the Eagles are they last year's team? I don't know, man, week one is hard to put a lot of stock into it. On either side of the football there's a lot going on. You got new coordinators, you got new positions, you got new players and positions. So, overall, I don't think the Eagles we're not going to see what they did in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 3:That was a one-game thing where they're just constantly in the backfield, constantly in the backfield. They didn't have the same pass rushers, but I think they're going to be just fine. But, like I said, dallas is formidable. Their defense actually played better than I thought. Like Marlon mentioned, after that lightning delay, I mean that took me back to the Super Bowl, when the lights went out, man. After that delay. It was like this game is. Can we just call it? I mean it's 1-1. We got Trayvon on gigs in the locker room eating food, going to the snack bar for an hour and a half. Let's just call it, man. I mean they didn't want to play, they didn't want to finish that game. It was a half-assed game after that lightning delay.
Speaker 2:That's right. Good point on that, Chad.
Speaker 1:And the over was for sure about to hit on the over and it just went. It pretty much went to shit after that.
Speaker 3:So I know B Kerms was happy about his under, because that definitely hit yeah he won 25 cents.
Speaker 2:Yeah, good point All right.
Speaker 1:so we're going to go ahead and get into the picks and we have some rapid-fire questions, so we're going to go ahead and start with you. Oh, go ahead.
Speaker 2:Before you go there. We've got to do some justice to some of the shocking meltdowns on Sunday before we do our picks. You know what the hell happened to Chicago after the first half against Minnesota and a rookie quarterback. Pretty much the Buffalo-Bartimore thing was off the charts. You know how the hell did Baltimore lose that game Jet? So we got to delve in, and not only that, aaron Rodgers, who I really don't like, but you got to get props for four TD passes on the road against the Jets man. You know there was a lot of great football going on. We could break them down real quick before we do the pitch, especially Baltimore and Buffalo. Go ahead, chad.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I mean, once again you're talking about a game where no one could stop anybody. I mean the defenses. I'll tell you right now. I said Packers-Bills Super Bowl that was about two weeks ago and then I watched the Bills in the first half and I said what the hell did I do? This team couldn't stop me. And Doc, I mean, I'll throw it to old Doc in the flat 20 times a game they can't tackle, they can't stop anybody. Lamar and Derrick Henry are having their way and then the fourth quarter comes around and it's literally playoff football and it's one possession and the guy who doesn't really fumble fumbled and that's all that they needed. And you can question whether Harbaugh should have went for it on forces three. But I'll tell you right now, if he went for it and didn't get it, we would have killed him for not trusting his defense. But, like I said, I mean you want to go there, you want to go Detroit, you want to go Chicago and Minnesota. You can look across the board.
Speaker 3:It's week one and this is not your. You know your uncle's football, where the preseason these guys, these guys don't play docs, they don't touch the field Preseason is not. I mean, I'm not, it was never the Superbowl, but at least the guys were getting reps in the preseason. These guys don't even put their pads on in the preseason. So week one is literally it's sloppy. People are out of place. Football kind of gets a little wacky in September and around October it kind of gets back to normal. So Josh Allen's always going to be great, lamar's always going to be great, but it's these other guys, it's that third DN who's going to make a key mistake in Septemberember. It's that second wide receiver who runs the wrong route and puts his quarterback in a bad spot.
Speaker 2:Those things are going to get cleaned up. But, like you said, for week one, there was some great storylines. There really was yeah, yeah, and marlin, you'll agree. You'll agree, marlin, that uh, you know that the aaron rogers who we all killed, we thought it was done and did garbage, nothing for the jay. He goes out and throws TDs. I can't even name other than DK Metcalf, who the Steelers receivers were, so props to him. And then the Rams had a gutty win at home against Houston and the 49ers had a gutty win, a late touchdown pass from Birdie. But you know, champ, in New Mexico, marlon, I want you to weigh in on this. Poor champ man Bears fans. Champ man bears fans. You know that. Just does caleb williams gentlemen turn the corner. They want him out now. I talked to the chicago fan today your take on that game in general, fella, because I thought chicago, despite being johnson, I mean he started out 10 for 10. What the hell happened?
Speaker 1:it's you know, it's interesting when you see some of the passes that caleb made. He made some of the hardest throws that you can make, but also he missed a ton of uh passes to as well, some easy passes that you should be able to make as a as an elite quarterback or a quarterback of his caliber coming out of college. So, uh, I don't know, maybe maybe the bears are just cursed with, with all of the quarterbacks that they've had from, you know, trubisky and and cutler and, and I know Chad.
Speaker 3:Oh yeah, Cutler was nice. Cutler was nice, Best quarterback of all time. So I don't know.
Speaker 1:Maybe they're just scarred. You know, for quarterbacks, Go ahead, Chad.
Speaker 3:Maybe it's just hard to throw a nail polish on.
Speaker 1:Maybe it's the arrow down there.
Speaker 3:But no, I mean first off Doc, I was on record saying that I think Rodgers was going to be successful. I love the fit in Pittsburgh. I think he brings kind of what the fans in Pittsburgh want. He's not a New York guy. He doesn't fit in with the New York media. He doesn't fit in with the lifestyle out there. I'm not saying he's blue-collar, but he's kind of a shit-talking arrogant take heed to that and I think that's a good fit there. It's more of a green bay style and I think that's what Rogers likes. He likes to be in control and he likes to have the support around them and not people pushing back on them.
Speaker 3:And like you said, with Chicago, maybe Ben Johnson I know it's only one game, so you know, don't quote me on this he might be a hall of fame coach. I mean, is he Josh McDaniels? We will know. Maybe he's josh mcdaniels. He's a good offensive coordinator that doesn't know how to coach in in a game as a head coach. And kayla williams, he's starting to get to a point. Where has he showed us anything yet? I'm not saying you got to be bravey already. I'm not saying but it's really hard when jayden daniels hit the way that he did, you know, hit the ground running. Kayla Caleb Williams. I mean, let's look at it like this Bo Nix might have had a better year than him last year. That's the same draft class.
Speaker 3:We've seen JJ McCarthy last night. We've seen Michael Penix on Sunday. If Caleb Williams walks away from this in five years as the fourth-best quarterback in this draft class, that is alarming. That is extremely alarming and I need to see it. I don't care. It's year two and you got the best offensive mind in football on your sideline. He made jared golf look like a hall of famer and I've seen jared golf last weekend look like a pumpkin again. So you're. I know ben johnson can coach him up, but like marlin just said I mean kayla williams is missing. Throw after throw, that should be made. I don't care that. You can scramble 20 yards outside the pocket and throw a line drive down the sideline. That only happens once or twice a game. Good for you. Can you drop back on that three-step, five-step drop and fire the ball to your receiver on time? That's how you win football games that we haven't seen yet.
Speaker 2:Yeah, that's a good point. And before we move on, Marlon, you've got to give a shout-out to Micah Parsons, who pretty much was almost blackballed in Dallas. He had a sack against Detroit, you know. I know Detroit was the leading scorer in the NFL last year. I know they missed Ben Johnson, but that defense for Green Bay and the way Jordan Love played, they might be a force in the NFC, Not only the NFC North, Chad and Marlon, but the entire NFC, you know. And then my last thing is props to the Raiders for going on the road, which is unheard of week one, going up to New England, somewhat making up for that 25 years ago, tuck rule and beating Drake May, who everybody's high on, and the coach. But the Raiders are a different team this year, Chad and Marlon. So those two things before we move on. Man, I was extremely impressed with the poise Smith had. And then I just referenced Micah Parsons in his first game. In short, packages getting a sack in three hurries, yeah, your take real quick.
Speaker 3:Yeah, I mean, you nailed it, doc. I mean, micah Parsons is a gamer, he knows how to play the game. He fit into the system. That defense is underrated for sure. I think as the year goes on, people are going to see just how good they are, and you know they are a threat to win the Super Bowl and you know that's just what it is, doc. I mean it is what it is. The Packers are legit, they're a legit contender and that's a great move by guy like that who is disgruntled yeah, you're up, marlin, I just had to give a little respect to week one, as he's signing games no, no, we can go ahead and finish some of the rapid fire questions right now.
Speaker 1:So, uh, chad, I'll go ahead and start with you. So real quick on on these. Uh, your thoughts on jaylen carter getting fined 57 000. You think I know that they're playing the chiefs this week, so it's a lot of money that's involved in that game. But do you think he should have got a little more hefty or fine than just the $57,000?
Speaker 3:I mean you just said it, do I think? I mean, is it Mahomes? Is it you know? Does it hurt? No, does Jalen Carter still affect the game? I think the NFL looked and said they did, because Javante Williams sorry just run for two touchdowns in 100 yards. So obviously we can't have him missing that game. That's a rematch. Everyone in America wants to sit down and watch that game, so I think it did play a part in it. I think if the Eagles were playing the Panthers, maybe he would have missed the game. I mean the money. I mean what's 57 and 110, 150? It's the same thing to him. He's rich as hell. He has in his bag. I don't think. I think he sent a message with games, not money, to me. These athletes don't care about the fine when it's just money yeah, absolutely, that's ashtray money for him.
Speaker 1:Marley, go ahead yeah, yep, absolutely okay, doc, going over, going over to you. So, uh, kiddo's gonna be on ir with that hamstring injury. So what does this mean for the niners offense? Going forward now, with him going to be sidelined for a little bit?
Speaker 2:Well, it's a blow, but they're going to rely on CMC McCaffrey and then Robinson, the running back. They got from Washington a little bit more, but you got to be careful with CMC Christian McCaffrey. You know you don't want to push him. He came into the game with a calf. Now he had 33 touches Chad. But you know, going forward, do you want to keep chancing him and mess up your whole season down the stretch? This is a big blow. Kittle's a top two tight end in the league, behind Kelsey, of course, or maybe even Brock Bowles top three. Let's say top three. Brock, it's top three. Let's say top three. Brock Bowers won Kelsey two and then Kittle three, or vice versa, I don't know, but it's a blow. You know hamstring, those hammies, you know it's one of those things where I never had them because I'm not a speed guy. You guys are. It's difficult to monitor and it's a blow to Purdy and that offense, you know. So hopefully will they play a sorry team this week, I think. So we'll see how it goes, man, yeah, go ahead.
Speaker 1:All right, and then Chad on the Lions. Are we just seeing them shaping up to be the last place team in the NFC North?
Speaker 3:I don't think so. I think you're looking at a team that just lost their offense coordinator and defensive coordinator and they played against the Packersers, who we just raved about as being a super bowl contender. I don't think you could judge them that quick and after what we've seen last night, I'm saying the bears are still stuck in the cellar. I don't think they're getting out of there. So we got what is it? Detroit? Detroit, I think, plays.
Speaker 1:They play chicago this week yes, I'm not sure you do. They play Detroit.
Speaker 3:So, you asked me that question again. I'm telling you right now I think Chicago is the seller dweller. If Chicago wins, then Detroit's the seller dweller. But I think Detroit will figure it out. I think they're going to get back to Dan Campbell football. Ben Johnson had Jameson Williams, you could throw a wrinkle in, you had Gibbs. I think Dan Campbell is going to turn around and say you know what? Let's just get back to smash mouth football, bite kneecaps and let's just feed the ball to Montgomery and let's just pound the ball in and let's win some football games.
Speaker 1:That's right, good response Doc, miami, who knows what's going to happen with them? You got Tyreek, you got I mean, a-chain is probably only the best thing that's in Miami.
Speaker 2:But what do you do if you're this Miami team and when is it time to blow it up? I think the coach there, mcdaniels. He might be gone by week five or week six. That's a team that's at disarray and if it wasn't for the New Orleans Saints, miami by far would be the worst team in football, even with Tua who had a horrible game and it made him a big contract Chad. But Miami is so in disarray In the locker room. You got some charges coming to Tyreek Hill. Now we found out today and you know he blew the locker room up last fall Talking about he's out and all that, but I feel sorry for them.
Speaker 2:You know somewhere for the Dolphin loyalists because that team does have historical value relative to Don Shuler and Dan Marina and those guys back then. But this is a Miami team that's in such disarray, man, can they recover? I mean, we're talking, they got blown out.
Speaker 3:Did you hear what the former Dolphin, who's now on the Colts, told his team before the game?
Speaker 2:No, did you hear how?
Speaker 3:he responded to it. He told his defense crowd the middle of the field and jump to his first read. He doesn't know how to progress past his first read and he's always looking middle of the field. Wow, it's the guy who played with tua for multiple years, since two has been in the nfl. You don't think he knows that you don't think the book's out on tua that's the case.
Speaker 3:He's done, doc, he's done. You can't overcome that. If that defense, if he the colts defense, is not the 85 bears, I'll tell that. And for him to come out and say it was as simple as that. We jumped his first read and we stuffed the middle of the field. He can't get to the outside, he doesn't have the arm to get to the outside and he doesn't know how to progress past his first read and he was crumbled. I'm calling for Quinn Ewers already.
Speaker 2:Already Doc, already man you got to eat the contract.
Speaker 3:It's a mess. Like you said, it's a mess. It's a soap opera down there. Maybe the guy can coach. You got Tyreek Hill who doesn't want to be there. You got Tua, who can't play football, and when he does he gets knocked silly half the time. It's not a good situation.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's not. That's a very good chat and, marlon, it's only going to get worse. You know, because they play Buffalo and even the Jets have killed Miami. At this point, you know, I just feel sorry for the Dolphin loyalty. There's a lot of people that call Adam Schein a guy, that are Dolphin fans and they have nothing to look forward to after a week. We're talking about the Colts. This is Danny Dimes. Come on, fellas.
Speaker 3:That's what I'm saying. I don't think the Dol could be modern. Modern day, doc. I think modern day wow orange county.
Speaker 1:That's right there you go so, chad, how are you on honestly and you can be honest, it's just us. It's just us here. How are you honestly feeling about your broncos after seeing it is week one, but how are you seeing? How are you looking at your team now after the performance that they had on Sunday?
Speaker 3:oh, you know I'm gonna keep it real, bro. The defense is stellar and I know it's against a rookie, but man Cam Ward was. He was running for his life. Nico Benito, fresh off the contract, nine hurries, pass or can is just absolutely. He's champ Bailey 2.0. You cannot throw the ball in his direction. It's impossible to complete a pass against them. But the offense was not what I thought it was going to be and part of that was we couldn't run the ball. The first half we could not run the ball. Jk Dobbins could not get more than one two yards a carry. Rj Harvey, the rookie out of Florida UCF, I believe, was just non-existent. And Bo Nix. We're not going to win games if Bo Nix is still on the ball 50 times a game. I'll tell you that right now.
Speaker 3:That's not the recipe. You got to find something out. He's a gunslinger. He's going to try to force it. He forced a couple of bad passes. Luckily, our defense was there. One thing I was disappointed in was at the end of the game. This is not a team. This is not Ben Johnson's first game. This is not a new offense coordinator, new defense coordinator. This is the same staff. A lot of these guys are the same guys.
Speaker 3:And to run that play on fourth and eight, where they kind of just and it was an engage eight, tennessee bought the heat and I respect that, but Bo Nix just threw the ball in the air. It looked like we were trying to kill the clock. It looked like a play where you tell your seconds left. I want you to bootleg out, throw the ball as high as you can and run out the last seven seconds. Fellas, there was 58 seconds left in that game. When he did that, tennessee got the ball at the 40-yard line. They were in position to go down and tie the game up. I was not happy with the offense and now we got the Colts.
Speaker 2:You're not going to do what you did to Miami against us. Before you continue on, I want to chat on the chat. If you referenced these guys on playing the preseason, could the timing be affected by non-participants in games? You know, and offense will come around in week two or week three or is it just one of those things where you're legitimately concerned, you know?
Speaker 3:I think it's a little of both. You got to be fair. I think around week three you can start to judge your offense. I think defense, you wake up and put on your pads. You know how to tackle right Offense, especially these days. It's different now, doc. You know it's not the 80s where it's ground and pound and you throw a couple balls up to your receivers. I mean there's so much into this, there's so much into these schemes. There's so much pre-snap. There's guys moving left and right, there's all of things going on. I mean even alignment. I mean I don't know if I'm the only one that trips out on this, like when I was a kid man and this we were talking the 90s if alignment set and he moves at any part of his body.
Speaker 3:It was false start. Yeah, now you've got alignment popping up, doing hand signals and looking left and right and I'm like what is false start? Like you know what I mean. Like back in the day you put your knuckles in the ground and you couldn't move your body, couldn't move your head until that ball was snapped. Now you know, the quarterback says you know Omaha, or here we go.
Speaker 3:And then you got the left tackle pop up and he starts pointing out you know blocking assignments and I'm like Danny. So there's. It's such a more complicated offense these days where it takes time to just get. You can teach it on the board in practice and in the film room, but when you're on the field, I mean full speed, it takes a couple weeks. So I'll give Nix a pass. We got the Colts coming up. Let's see. You know, if Danny Dimes is going to do his thing against his defense and I wouldn't bet against it. I think the defense will handle Danny Dimes just fine and let's see what we do to that Colts defense. Like I said, they're not the 85 Bears to him.
Speaker 2:What's your take on Baron the rookie from Texas? Real quick, what's your take on Baron the rookie? Did he get snaps? Draft number one pick from Texas, all-american.
Speaker 3:He was out there playing some nickel Doc and I thought we were going to use him more on the outside. They went off to Riley Moss again, the kid out of Iowa, and he struggled last year a little bit. He made some plays. This weekend Baron's going to be a player he can move around the field. What I like about this defense, especially in the secondary, is the versatility, because they're not going to throw towards their tan. So baron and moss got to get ready because they're going to get the ball thrown at him. So he showed good versatility. He likes to hit, he's not afraid to tackle, and that's what I like out of a db all right, good response.
Speaker 1:Go ahead, marley now on to your atlanta falcons, doc Chad. He mentioned just about analyzing your offense and grading your offense and everything From what I saw. You know Pennis looked decent for the most part. You know Kyle Pitts siding, he's back with seven receptions. Bijan did his thing but you know you got on the other side. You got Baker and the new weapon, abuka, and you know Bucky. You got a lot of weapons there. So it was a tough game. So just your thoughts on the matchup. I thought you guys could pull it out but it came up a little short, especially with that miss by Kuh at the end. So your thoughts on that?
Speaker 2:Yeah, that kills us. Because here's the thing we paid Kuh and he was injured last year, so we gave him the benefit of the doubt. Now we brought another kicker in today. But that you can't lose a home game in the division after you've made upgrades on defense, with Leonard Floyd and free agency on the edge. And then you draft the kid, jalen Walker out of Georgia another edge, a linebacker hybrid. And then you got Pierce, who by all accounts was tearing up camp and fouled his offensive line, but yet Baker went right down the field late. So it's discerning here that the defense isn't up.
Speaker 2:Jeff Oberg we brought in from the Jets who was the interim head coach. He was supposed to be an upgrade on that. Xavier Watts, chad showed his ass. He had almost two interceptions and three passes in play after Jesse Bates' third, xavier Watts out of Notre Dame, the big safety, the playmaker, but other than that man, you know, it's one of those things where it's still disappointing that all the additions on defense that we made didn't make a play when it mattered most.
Speaker 2:Now you did mention Panics real quick, the guy you know about his arm talent. We should have won that game because of his legs, you know, when it wasn't there. He took off looking like Vipic Chad and then critical first down, the last touchdown, where he extended himself without his legs touching the field, otherwise he'd have been blown dead short of the goal line. This guy's a gamer man and the storyline should have been that. But you know we couldn't make the field goal at the end. You know, and when we faced them again, gentlemen, on the road, in a few weeks they'll have Tristan Wurst. You know they'll have Chris Godwin. You know to go to Mega Buka, who showed out as a rookie receiver from Ohio State. So I'm not looking forward to that rematch on the road because those two playmakers were missing, especially the big linemen.
Speaker 2:You know Ricky Irving is a small guy, he's a quick, shifty guy. You know, he's a small guy, he's a quick, shifty guy. He's a guy that many people he hides behind the line. He gave us fits last year. So yeah, there you go. We got to make adjustments and he marches on the fire. Chad, we're tired of him already Losing at the crib in week one. You do who they want. When you train at camp all summer, marlon, you knew what they had and they were missing two key pieces and we still lost. So there you go.
Speaker 1:Okay, okay. And then last question I got for you guys before we get to the picks. We saw the final score to the Bills and the Ravens. High-scoring game. Everybody wants to see a game like that. But if you're Kansas City, if you're the Chargers, if you're the Eagles, if you're uh, you know kansas city, if you're the, the chargers, if you're the eagles, if you're you know whoever, whatever team may make it far in the playoffs and you may come and meet this team in the afc championship or even in the super bowl. If you're looking at this team, is their offenses both of these team, the bills and the ravens are their offense just that good, or is their defense really really bad? Chad, I'll go ahead and start with you on this one just that good, or is?
Speaker 2:their defense really really bad chad.
Speaker 3:I'll go ahead and start with you on this one, I think. Like I said, I think it's a little of both. I think the offense on both are great in their own aspects. I mean the ravens zay flowers is a stud, I think he's a receiver. He's kind of tyreek hill, you know he can. He can run the ball in a reverse, he can get open across the field in the middle. He's not afraid. He's a little guy but he's not afraid to get across the middle. Yeah, jackson is absolutely fantastic. I've been on the Lamar bandwagon. I will be on there until he retires.
Speaker 3:Derek Henry had so much gas left in the tank and I can't believe that all these other teams let him go to the one team. That would be absolutely deadly. I mean, lamar and Derek is just, you know, two peas in a pod. And on the other side Josh Allen is special. I mean, is the kid, keon Coleman finally going to come around? He had a pretty good game. He made a couple mistakes, you know, running out of bounds on that one play before he came back in and touched the ball, but overall he looked like a number one receiver for Josh Allen Palmer, who, marlon knows, always came in clutch when he was called upon in LA with the Chargers, always made a big catch when he had to. And then you've got the guy Shakir, who is kind of a Cole Beasley, kind of an Edelman type of player, where he's just kind of that shifty, gadgety guy for Josh Allen and you have the two tight ends. So I think both offenses are superb.
Speaker 3:I think that's an MVP, don't think they? I think they respect each other but I don't think they like each other and I think it's kind of. We're looking at Brady and Manny. When we look at Lamar and Josh Allen, I think they're starting to kind of understand what's going on. They're starting to understand how great they are. And it's crazy because we got Burrow and Mahomes in the same conference, so it's like we got four of those guys and someone has to carve the way. And you know, I think Lamar wanted that game a lot. He struggles in the playoffs, he loses to the bills all the time. He wanted that one a lot. You can tell in that postgame presser. But I think these teams are very well on their way to meeting again in a meaningful game in october.
Speaker 2:You know, december and january the last two mvps, marlin, and it's one of those things where that's the game in a year and it happened in week one. And, as chad referenced, you know Lamar wanted that game like no other because you can argue with 41 tee passes and only four picks and almost a thousand yard rusher, he should have won MVP but they gave it to Josh, and rightly so. But it's one of those things where the game changed when, uh, ed Oliver and I think you guys are agree made the game, made the play of the game by forcing a fumble on a big horse. He never fumbles and Ed Oliver to me he's a poor man's Aaron Donald, this guy does it up in New York and nobody really. They paid him but he's a playmaker man and that was the play of the game right there Without that fumble.
Speaker 2:Baltimore runs out the clock and you can argue whether they should have went on fourth and three late Chad, but they didn't and Josh Allen burned them. I would have taken my chances. Fourth and three were running back and you know he wants to get the ball again after the gaffe. And he got Lamar Jackson, even if you throw the mark in, if he didn't make it, we would have killed him, him. So yeah, you're right, yeah, so go ahead, go ahead molly.
Speaker 1:Okay, all right. So let's go ahead and get into some of these picks. We're gonna do, I believe, six or seven uh games on this one and then we'll wrap up with a little ncaa uh question. So all right. So thursday night football washington is at green bay, uh, washington, and this one is getting three and a half points. So so, doc, what do you like on this one?
Speaker 2:Hey man, I like Green Bay man. You know I love Jayden Day, I respect that. But this Parsons thing has uplifted the locker room. And then you got Devontae Wine, you got Gary on the other side on the edge and you got the other, kid Walker. So that defense is they don't miss Kenny Clark. You know they show their wares. You know, and I'm laying the points. You know I'm laying the points with Green Bay simply because you know Josh Jacobs. He seems like he's on a mission man. You know, second year with the organization, jordan Love. You know, and I don't know Chad you might enlighten me on, I don't know if the rookie fastest player in the draft. Did he get any touches?
Speaker 3:Yeah, golden, I don't know, I think he had a couple. He had a couple touches.
Speaker 2:Yeah, but wait till he explodes, man. But yeah, I'm laying the points. Take Green Bay and lay the points, yeah.
Speaker 1:What do you like, Chad?
Speaker 3:If it was three I would say green bay, but that extra little hook. I think you take washington and I think green bay wins with a show goal, but washington covers yeah, yeah, I like green bay in this one.
Speaker 1:I think they'll mess around and, and I don't, we need to see a little more from washington. I mean, they had a decent game. Well, I don't think it was necessarily a great game against, uh, the giants last week, but, um, they're gonna need to come a little more from Washington. I mean, they had a decent game. Well, I don't think it was necessarily a great game against the giants last week, but they're going to need to come out and prove that they can do it and show that they are the team that they were last year, and with this green Bay they're just that much better. So definitely think green Bay is going to run away with this one. So all right, chad, going over to you on this one. Buffalo's at the Jets. It's going to be a tough division game in this one. Jets are getting six and a half on this one. Who do you like in that one?
Speaker 3:It's tough man. There's Buffalo. I've only seen less. It was their Super Bowl week one. They just had a long game. They're going to be tired. They might overlook the Jets. The Jets just came, came off. They battled their ass off against pittsburgh.
Speaker 3:Um, I mean it's the nfl and in my heart I'm like buffalo is gonna win by 17. But then if you go back to, I mean it's nfl football and if it was that easy then vegas would have. You know, supercell signs up on their casinos because everyone in the world is gonna think the bills are gonna come out. So six and a half. They got to win by a touchdown Do? I think it's probably going to happen, yeah, but I mean, let me just use my brain a little bit and think you know what the Jets covered late. Buffalo wins by six. It's that half. There's a reason why there's a half in there. I think the Bills look good. I think Aaron Glenn's comfortable with them, wanted him to be his quarterback. The defense looked good. Brees Hall no one's talking about that. Brees Hall was nowhere to be found with Aaron Rodgers there. We're talking about a guy who came into the league and looked like the next Hall of Fame running back. So give me the Jets to cover, but lose the game by six.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'm taking the Jets plus the points too, violet, because, as Chad referenced Quentin Williams and those cats, they're pissed off that they lost to Aaron Rodgers and they come back at a home game against a division rival and they're not going to win. But they'll lose by four or five or even three. Justin Fields man, you know, even if he runs, that's dangerous to the Buffalo defense.
Speaker 3:I know they got Milano. We just need to knock Lamar and Henry. So now put in Fields and Hall Same thing, same thing, brother, that's right.
Speaker 2:So I'm picking Jets in the points and I love that Jets defense. You know, aaron Glenn, they're going to clean that thing up after week one, and I think they're going to give Josh Allen fits. You know so at home too. Yeah, and don't forget about Dan Wilson. Dan Wilson's underrated, you know, for the Jets as a receiver. Yeah, but go ahead.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I think this one they'll definitely keep it close. Those division games a little wonky, so I think they'll keep it close. So, speaking of another division game that we have, cleveland is at Baltimore. Baltimore is laying 11 and a half in this one. So, doc, what are your thoughts on this?
Speaker 2:That's a tough one. I think Baltimore is going to come back and smoke them. I really do. And I say that even though it's a division game. They just lost a heartbreaker and Henry might run for 200. But you know Lamar is going to do his thing in Baltimore and I know it's a lot of points, chad, but it stands to reason that the connection between Lamar Jackson and Zay Flowers is fire. You know Zay Flowers at 143 career high and you know Mark Andrews is going to show up. This game is at home and I know Roquan Smith and Malachi Starks, the rookie safety, going with Hamilton, they're going to bounce back man. We're talking about Cleveland here. You know, and I just I got to lay the points for Levin. Even though it's division, cleveland has nothing. You saw what Flacco did and they're not going to put in the kids. So you know I feel sorry for Flacco because Volkwana Smith is going to go crazy. You know, on that defensive line, I already mentioned Hamilton and Starks, but go ahead.
Speaker 3:Yep, joe Flacco revenge game. I mean, take everything I just said about the divisional game with the Jets and the Bills and throw it out the window, because I'm a doc. This is different. And Cleveland just covered against Cincinnati. Credit them for that. But Cincinnati doesn't blow teams out. Cincinnati doesn't know how to put their foot on someone's neck. Lamar and the Ravens have been so good at this since Lamar came into the league. When he plays a bad team, they destroy them. They did it before with the Jets. I've seen them do it to the Dolphins. It just happens every time they're going to come in pissed off. They just walked away from a game that they should have won. They were up by 15 with five minutes left. Unless the football game, that's not sitting pretty with Lamar. That's not sitting pretty with Derrick Henry. Give me the Ravens to win by 20.
Speaker 1:Yeah, absolutely Upset special. It's going to be a backdoor cover. But, I'll just take it it's a division game.
Speaker 3:Cover is not an upset special.
Speaker 1:It is an upset special.
Speaker 3:If you're going to do an upset special, you got to say Moneyline, yeah, good point.
Speaker 1:Yeah, wow, I do like Cleveland with the points. I think they'll just keep it close. I don't. Joe Flacco. We'll see what he can do. We'll see what running back shines, whether it's Nick Chubb or whoever.
Speaker 2:No Nick Chubb's in Houston brother, you know, I don't know. That's right.
Speaker 3:They got Jerome Ford and somebody else Dylan Sampson, the rookie out of Tennessee. Yeah, they got another running back over there too in Cleveland Treshawn Junkins out of Ohio State.
Speaker 1:so I think they'll definitely find a way to keep it close.
Speaker 2:That's your call. Yes, that's me, that's my call.
Speaker 1:My call, yeah, mark the tape Okay now we have my call, didn't drop. All right. Philly at Kansas City. This is the Brady game that he'll be doing on Fox. So of course we just talked about it, with Jalen Carter playing in the game. Of course we just talked about it with Jalen Carter playing in the game. Of course it's going to be one of the biggest matchups that we'll have this week. So, doc, on this one, who do you like? Philly at Kansas City. Kansas City is getting a point on this one.
Speaker 2:I'm laying a three with Philly man, kansas City. The receivers are hurt, you know, and then the other one got suspended. Receivers are hurt, you know, and then the other one got suspended and you put some fast linebackers for like, like, like, nolan Smith or Jahad Campbell on Kelsey, who's Mahomes going to throw for? And you know, the D line for Philly is going to key on Mahomes, even though it was in Kansas city. This is not the same Kansas city guys. You know, what we saw in the Superbowl might be a little step down. It might not routeC like that, but I think it goes noted that Mahomes number 15, is going to miss his weapons. Man, those are huge losses. You stack the line, you take it from there. We'll see what happens. I'm laying a three.
Speaker 1:Go ahead. It's one point. Doc. One point Go ahead, chad. One point yeah.
Speaker 3:To me, man. I look at it like it's a movie or like a script. They say Are they really going to let the Chiefs go 0-2? Are they really not going to let the Chiefs get back against the Eagles? Seriously, are the Chiefs going to really lay down and get beat twice by the Eagles in their last three games? Is Mahomes going to be 0-2? The Chargers got an easy game this week. They're going to go 2-0. The Broncos play the Colts they're going to go 2-0. Are we really going to see Mahomes being a two-game hole in his division in the first two weeks? You're damn right we are. Give me the Eagles by six.
Speaker 2:That's right, chad, way to set it up.
Speaker 3:I thought Lee Corso right there.
Speaker 2:Yes, you did, yes, you did.
Speaker 1:I like the Eagles too as well. I think they'll come in there and they'll. Hopefully AJ Brown does more than he did last week. The running game is going to be there. They just traded for another running back, I believe, today. So Philly is going to figure it out. They're going to get up and get ahead and run the ball out, and that's just what they're going to do, and they're going to figure out. This offense is going to look much better, like it did last year. All right, atlanta at Minnesota.
Speaker 2:Doc, I'll go ahead and start with you on this one. Minnesota's laying four and a half. This should be a good one. Who do you like, doc? No man, I have no confidence in my Falcons against that defensive coordinator. She should be a head coach. She did a number on Caleb and even though my man, michael Penance Jr, played admirably well, I just think that defensively, until we show something on the road now we lost a home guy. Now this is on the road.
Speaker 2:Sunday night they're going to be jacked. I think you lay the points, man, and that's just me, because right now I'm staring at 0-2, and it's one of those things where we can't stop nobody, despite the defensive addition. So it'll be totally shocking if we win that game. Totally shocking. Get to be John Robinson. The ball 30 times maybe, I don't know, but Minnesota proved to me, even when they downed it, this McCarthy kid man. You know, with McConnell I think you give the coaching staff, if nothing else, a three-point advantage over my guy Morris, and I hate to say that, but it is what it is. You know he's done wonders with a kid that ain't played all year in two years. And you know I love Pennings, but I can see their defense doing the number Dallas Turner and some of the other cats they have on D it's at home in Minnesota a loud crowd, gorgeous building, gorgeous stadium. So yeah, to answer your question, we're going on to lay the points for Minnesota.
Speaker 1:Yeah, doc, I think Atlanta could do it man. I think they just needed to piece it all together. You got your quarterback, you got the receivers, you got the running back. They just got to piece together. Defense is a different story, but I do like your offense. I think your offense has enough to at least compete with their offense. So I'll definitely take atlanta with the four and a half chat.
Speaker 2:Well, drake, london might be out. Gentlemen, before you go ahead with a shoulder. He hurt his shoulder and he's out MRI tomorrow. Was it today? That's one of those things where he landed hard in the end zone and they didn't even call it a touchdown, but he might be out. That's a devastating blowup. My main guy, though. But go ahead, go ahead. I digress, chad.
Speaker 3:NFL is a funny sport, man, and we're talking about a Falcons team who opened up at home I believe you guys were at home against Tampa Bay, correct? Yeah, correct, hey. Tampa Bay pulls off the upset. Minnesota's on the road in Chicago Division rival Monday Night Football. They pull off the upset, get the comeback win. Roles are reversed. Everyone's thinking Atlanta's going to be down in the dumps. Everyone's thinking Minnesota's riding high. They're, but McCarthy is still basically a rookie and Pendix has the edge on him in experience. I think the Falcons get it done. I don't think the Falcons are going to win too. I just don't think so. Things have to even out eventually over the season. I think the Falcons win. What's the spread Falcons are favored by?
Speaker 2:Four and a half no.
Speaker 3:The Falcons are favored by Minnesota.
Speaker 1:Well, Minnesota is favored by four and a half Falcons are getting it Give me plus four and a half Give me plus four and a half.
Speaker 3:Falcons win outright, but give me the plus four and a half Absolutely.
Speaker 1:I agree, I agree. Okay, so Tampa Bay at Houston. Tampa Bay is getting two and a half points on this one.
Speaker 3:Chad, who do you like? So this is twice the segment where I said take everything I just said and throw it out the window Once again. It should even out right. Houston should win this game. 10 base. Come back to earth a little bit, man.
Speaker 3:Baker Mayfield has slowly became a winner in this league and he got drafted and he posted that Brett Favre picture. He kind of has a little Favre in him, man. He's not afraid to throw the ball wherever he wants to. He's kind of feisty a little bit. He always seems to come out on the right end of these games and you got a guy like mike evans shout out to the bucks for having godwin and I. If godwin's not hurt, they don't draft ibuka. Ibuka, that kid's a stud. We're talking about a guy who's one of the best receivers in college. He just got overshadowed by a superstar in smith smith ain't there. Ibuka might win the heisman. So that's right.
Speaker 3:I think the Tampa Bay Bucky Irvin's a great player. They've done such a great job of personnel there. I mean they just replenish, they just continue to replenish and just refill and get consistent and I just think they win the game. I think they win the football game. Houston is a weird football team for me. I respect the Nico Ryans. I like CJ Shroud kid out of Southern California. I just there's something about them that that just doesn't do it for me. I think they're skating in a division that's really bad so they kind of get a free couple wins a year. I don't think they're as good as they are advertised. I think Tampa Bay gave it to me.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I like Tampa Bay too straight up, because Tank Dale, he hasn't played yet, he's out. And then I don't know the other receiver he had a pretty decent game against the Rams. But CJ Stroud, to me he doesn't have that magic. Chad and Marlon that he had his rookie year and of course, now you're depending on Nick Chubb to be your stud, and Nick Chubb's coming off two major injuries in his career on the knees, on the legs. I like Tampa Bay to win this game on the road. I love D'Amico Ryans, even though Houston has Will Anderson Jr in his second year or third year. He's a stud, but you could double team him on the edge. I like Stingley, the cornerback, but Tampa Bay just has too much. Mike Evans is a horse, emeka Ibuka is Chad Reffner, he's a horse. And then Bucky Irving, and so yeah, I'm taking Tampa Bay.
Speaker 1:Tampa checks all the boxes from quarterback to and they're consistent. But quarterback receiver new shiny toy in Ibuka, the running game. They just check all the boxes. Definitely like Tampa Bay in this one, alright. So Monday Night Football. We have two Monday Night um the running game. They just check, they check all the boxes. So definitely like tampa bay in this one. So, um, all right. So monday night football and we have two monday night football games uh, tampa bay and houston is the first one. The chargers, uh, at vegas is the second one. That one starts at 10 eastern, uh, so, uh, vegas is getting three and a half points on this one, doc, your wife's raiders getting three and a half points. What do you like, doc, your wife's Raiders getting three and a half points.
Speaker 2:What do you like in this one? I'm taking the Raiders. I'm taking the Raiders I hate to do this to you, brother, but the Raiders and their defense in the running game, you know. And then Geno Smith. That's all they needed was an adequate quarterback. The only caveat is that Brock Bauer is going to play with that knee. I that knee. I didn't see him get hurt, I was so engrossed in my game. But if Bowers is out, you know that's problematic. But I like Thorne, the receiver. I like Jacoby Myers, the other cat, but Ashley Gentry man in the second game at home, in front of that Vegas crowd, max Crosby, I got to take the points in that one man, you know, sorry, got to be honest there morning. I think that's a 23 to uh 21 time. 23 to 20, 23, 19, something like that, not a lot of scoring vegas should prevail at home.
Speaker 3:chat man you telling doc to take the raiders or take some blue balls on the couch man you know he's the. Chargers are about to beat the shit out of the Raiders. The Chargers are 31-13.
Speaker 2:It's about to be Wow.
Speaker 3:Todd Bowers is going to miss this game, geno Smith's going to throw a couple picks, derwin James is going to make a play and Justin Herbert is going to continue to cook on his way to probably winning the MVP this year.
Speaker 2:A route, oh, my way to probably win an MVP this year A route, oh my God, chad A route. You know your division. You got much respect.
Speaker 1:Go ahead, Marlon, I know where you're going with this To Chad's point that he said earlier in the game if this was a Staley Chargers, it'd be a different story, where the Raiders can probably find a way to figure out a way to win with Jente Geno, whoever the case is, but and find a way to lose it. Last second field goal, whatever the case is, but in this one I think that Herbert's going to find his targets again, build more chemistry back with Keenan. This could be the Martin Hampton game, because he didn't really have a great game last week. Him and Najee, they haven't really hit the ground running yet. So definitely like the Chargers and we should win by at least two touchdowns in this one Monday.
Speaker 2:Night Football. Okay, I stand alone. Good job, fellas Okay.
Speaker 1:So last couple questions for you guys. Chad, I'll start with you on this. One Week, one different story with Arch Manning. You're playing against one of the best defenses you'll play all year. They did have. I don't think he had four or five touchdowns on saturday. So what are your thoughts now on arch, and you think he'll be fine going forward?
Speaker 3:so here's the thing, man. It's tough, bro. It's really tough because we all have the word manning embedded in our brain, right? So we expect greatness. Is that fair to him? It's probably not.
Speaker 3:But at the same time, if his last name wasn't Manny, he's getting pulled in that game against Ohio State. I'll tell you that right now. And the one thing that worries me and I didn't notice it a lot last year, and, mind you, I'm a Quinn Ewers guy there was people calling for Manny to be over Quinn Ewers. I absolutely love Quinn Ewers, yeah, I. Yeah, I didn't see a lot of Manny last year. None of us did, and when we did a lot of, it was him running. We didn't see him throw a lot. So I didn't really pick this up last year. I picked it up instantly against Ohio State.
Speaker 3:He throws the ball really weird. It's not a true throwing motion, it's kind of a Philip Rivers with a twist. And what I noticed is he can throw the out route. He has strong arm, he can throw a post, he can throw a corner 25, 30 yards down the field. He struggles mightily, throwing the ball between 10 and 20 yards like big time. He has very bad accuracy issues and will he fix that? I'm sure he will. But he doesn't blow me away. It's not like I'm I.
Speaker 3:When I watch him, I'm not thinking I'm watching a generational quarterback, and that scares me because at this point in his career, if he was that, you would see it. I think he will. He be a pro probably will he be. Well, I'd be telling my great grandkids that he's, you know, one of the best quarterbacks ever play this game. I don't think so, because I don't see it. I don't see. I just don't like the way he throws the football. I don't like the way Rivers did either, and Rivers had a great career, hall of Fame career, but I just don't like it. I like the Staffords, the Cutlers, you know, get that arm back and really gunslinging it, and I don't like that. It doesn't look right to me. Yeah, a ditto for me, man.
Speaker 2:You know you do it against a little school this past Saturday when you play the big school, and he struggled with Georgia last year, so he had some good games against El Paso, texas and some of the other things. But you know, when you play the big schools, marlon, you got to show up. This is why you're a five-star recruit and I'm a recruit in the country. It's why you sat behind me. It was to learn for two years. It's your opportunity and going forward, man, you know you're going to beat Baylor and some of the other big 12. No, they're in the SEC. You're going to beat Vanderbilt and maybe some others.
Speaker 2:But you played Georgia November 15th we're going to see the real in Athens. So, yeah, I ditto what Chad say, the Manning name itself. You're going to be glued to the set to see when is it going to show up. The talent is there. You have the arm skill, but can you throw the short five yard out? Can you not underthrow or overthrow? And he did that plenty of times against Ohio State under duress this past Saturday morning. You didn't watch the game. I went to see him. He threw four but uh, four td passes but or five, whatever the case may be, but you playing against crinshaw high school.
Speaker 1:So yeah, I'm with chad on that, let's go and other than um michigan and oklahoma, I feel like there wasn't a ton of drama in the week two of college football. Chad, I think Florida State scored damn near 80 points, 77, my man. Other than that, were there any big storylines or anything that you were any big takeaways from week two in college football?
Speaker 3:It wasn't a big game. They played a bum team but Alabama had their way and it was good for Alabama fans to see that Baylor and SMU had a double overtime game, a high scoring shootout, that people kind of expected game. They're never going to score more than 20 points each. It's always a slugfest, kind of a smoother, but it was still, you know, a great game coming down to the wire. But, like you said, I mean the michigan and oklahoma was kind of the big game that everyone told us about, but florida losing, again south florida. So south florida got a quarterback back that didn't play last year. I believe his name is ben brown, if I'm not mistaken right byron brown.
Speaker 3:His name is byron brown, he, uh, he can play. So they were underdog against boise week one. They beat up on them and they just beat florida. South florida seemed to watch out for. But like you said, I mean and doc mentioned it earlier week two was a lot of those tune-up games. I mean college football's kind of got to it now where they'll give us week one and it's just premier game after game after game, one of the best slates you'll see all year and then week two you go back to your Gramblings and your University of Louisiana, monroe's and your Sanford's and Jacksonville State's and all these games. But I like it, man, especially as a Florida State fan. I mean, I don't mind watching my team drop 77, especially coming off of the year we had last year. So overall it was all right. There's a couple this week though.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, A couple this week.
Speaker 3:There is man you got.
Speaker 1:Clemson at.
Speaker 2:Georgia Tech yeah.
Speaker 3:Georgia.
Speaker 2:Tennessee.
Speaker 3:Yeah, you got Sherrod boys.
Speaker 2:Yeah, georgia at Tennessee, you got Pitt at West Virginia, which is the backyard brawl from the 80s, you know. Then Texas A&M plays at Notre Dame. I want to really see what Marcus Freeman got you know against this A&M defense. The quarterback for Texas A&M, his name is Reed Marlon. Remember that name?
Speaker 3:Athlete he can play, he can play.
Speaker 2:Yeah, so, yeah. So there's a few out there this weekend and Miami at home against South Florida, as you just referenced, south Florida's 2-0. South and.
Speaker 3:Miami at home against South Florida as you just referenced South Florida's 2-0.
Speaker 2:South Florida, yeah, going against Carson Beck in Miami. So there's a lot of good games there, led by Georgia at Tennessee. I mean you can make a case of Texas A&M at Notre Dame, but you know, it's bigger than last week too. Let's put it that way, marlon.
Speaker 3:I'm looking forward to it. Georgia is going to be on upset notice, Doc. Yeah, Can you believe that Tennessee and UCLA switched quarterbacks? That's right, Tennessee was a playoff team and they're better this year than they were last year, and UCLA can't win a game. I mean, just imagine that they switched quarterbacks and got you know what I mean.
Speaker 2:Go figure. Yeah, ucla got worse with Nico, la got worse with Nico.
Speaker 3:Clemson was down 16-0, I think, to Troy at halftime, 16-0 to Troy and they whooped their ass in the second half. But I'll tell you what Georgia Tech is quietly becoming one of the best programs in the country, especially on the East Coast, with Haynes King at quarterback and that coach they got. He's a hell of a coach. Haynes King is an athlete.
Speaker 2:Oh yeah, absolutely. I think that game is going to be a lot closer than people think. I'm taking Tech in the upset in Atlanta. I like it Atlanta baby. Yeah, that's right, brother, and I'm a Georgia fan saying this morning I'm not thrilled with the way Clemson is doing the thing with Dabo, but I like Georgia Tech and the upset special here. That's my upset the heart of Georgia.
Speaker 2:Yeah, you can make a case of West Virginia at home against Pitt. I don't know what Pitt has. That's a backyard brawl man, you know in the Northeast, sort of. But yeah, but go ahead, marlon.
Speaker 1:Okay, last question I got for you, chad how are you feeling about your Red Sox going into the playoffs coming up next month?
Speaker 3:AL is wide open. Al is wide open. I mean, that's just what it is, man. One week we're the hottest team in baseball. The next week, I mean, we look like the bad news bears At the end of the day. We got a bunch of young kids who are kind of you know, getting led by Alex Bregman, who was a great signing. We got Crochet, who's going to win game one, no matter who we play against. He's a hell of a pitcher. He's an ace. After that it's going to be a fight.
Speaker 3:But, like I said, I mean the AL. There's not a team in the AL that I'm worried about. As far as I mean, the Blue Jays choke every year. The Yankees are strikeouts out the Parker strikeout the Tigers. I'm not going to really believe in them. It's just going to come down to who gets hot at the right time. It's October baseball man. That's what it's about. And Arata Chapman is probably the best closer in the game, which is crazy coming off of a couple of rough years for him. So I'll take my chances with Arata Chapman and Garrett Crochet.
Speaker 2:Good luck, brother. I'm pulling for you. I like your coach, your manager, big time Best in the game. Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker 1:Perfect. Well, chad, we appreciate you for joining man. It's been great diving in, talking with all the sports and looking forward to week two and week three and college and all that stuff.
Speaker 3:So we appreciate you for joining man. Thank you, fellas. Have a good night.
Speaker 1:All right man. Thank you, fellas.
Speaker 2:Have a good night. All right, man. Yeah, Thank you.
Speaker 1:Chad Appreciate it All right, that was great, doc. That was good. Yes, it was. That was good. Love my boy Chad, absolutely. So okay, all right, other than that, doc you got anything else for us?
Speaker 2:the DK Metcalf game. He played for Seattle his first few years and now he's in Pittsburgh. So I think DK man Aaron Rodgers is going to get in the rock. It's in Pittsburgh, so keep an eye on that. That's all. That's one of. You're talking about a revenge game. Aaron Rodgers had his against the Jets. Keep an eye on DK Metcalf to receive it for the Steelers team. That's it, yeah.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, I'm just looking forward to a good week overall. That was a great um, just a great week. Just seeing um starting off with the Thursday game, the our game on Friday and um, throughout the whole week it was, it was great. And then, of course, that Sunday night game. I mean, that's, that's every fan's wish to watch a game like that back to back. And just imagine if you're at that game and you leave because you think that game is over and then you miss one of the best comebacks in football. So that's right.
Speaker 1:Um, that's right, and then, and then on top of that too, you have you know you have the game that we had on Monday night. So overall there was a. There was some dud of games uh, texas and the Rams, that was an ugly game. Uh, niners in Seattle, not really, titans Bron, titans, broncos. So there were some ugly games. But overall the big premier games, especially the Steelers and the Jets, I think that one would have been the best game of the weekend if it was not for that Sunday night game with the Bills and the Ravens.
Speaker 2:I agree totally, brother. As much as I love college football, I'm on pro football. There's something special about this this year. You know whether it's Aaron Rodgers with the Steelers, whether it's your rookies running back or Raiders rookie running back, or even you know some of the other storylines around the league. Man, you know McCarthy. So this is pro football, this is what they do. Micah Parsons in Green Bay now. So, yeah, this is pro football and I love college, but this is a special year for those people that I mentioned and the fans involved.
Speaker 1:Absolutely, absolutely Cool. Well, other than that, we will look forward to the Thursday night game and all the games this weekend and we will catch you guys next week. Peace, peace.
