Dave asserts that a tuned piano leads to musical inclinations, fascination and encouragement that lasts a lifetime, and encourages everyone to get a piano - and to be sure to have it tuned!

Tuning a Piano - The Gift of Music!
Greetings everyone and welcome to Mighty Line Minute! Everyone needs a piano. Not only does everyone need a piano, they need to tune their pianos, and we're going to learn why. To me, this piano is way out of tune! May not sound out of tune, but when it's in tune, it will sound awesome! Everyone needs a piano. Everyone needs a tuned piano. Let's get into it!
Today, folks, on Mighty Line Minute, we've got Mark Graham, Tuner Extraordinaire, who's well-known throughout the Baldwin-Wallace University community. Mark, what have you got to say to people who need to tune pianos and want to keep music in their family?
You mean need to have their own pianos tuned?
Yes!
Well, it's, you have a piano so you can enjoy it. And I've never been able to enjoy a piano unless it was in tune. And I remember when I was a kid, how excited I got when the tuner had come. It was the only time I fought with my siblings over practicing, because the piano was just so enjoyable to play. And it also, keeps the value of the piano up if you have it tuned every so often. An in-tune piano is a wonderful thing!
That's wonderful to hear. And I know that it's motivating to myself as well. And hopefully to the people that are going to use this piano who are very young in age. So, thank you for coming out today. We really appreciate it.

A lot of folks never even look at their piano. The first thing you can do is take a look inside. Here you've got all of your pins that go into the pin plank, which is underneath this. Someone put a little sheet of cover on here that you can't see the different laminated layers. And there you've got all the pins, the hammers, the strings, everything that is necessary for the piano to work. I'll take this cover off here and you'll learn a little bit more.
And as you can see with the front panel removed, you have a lot easier access.
Of course, I've got the pedal depressed for that, so we've got a little reverberance. And if you really want to get ambitious, these thumb screws here allow you to pull out this entire mechanism. And if you go further, you can also take out this piece here and then begin lifting each key out individually and remove every single key. Fortunately, most piano manufacturers number the key so that you can put them back together in the proper order. So, this is very useful if you're intending on refinishing a piano.
