Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Regina League.

Speaker 2:

Hi everybody, and welcome to today's broadcast of the Good Neighbor Podcast here in South Charlotte. What I love to do is speak with local business owners and learn more about them, and today I am speaking with marta grumberg. Hi, marta, how are you? Hi, I'm good. I'm good. Thank you, how are you? I'm great. Now you are the co-founder of grumberg accounting, so I can't wait to hear about your journey, tell us a little bit about you and what took you into this industry and then to found your own business well, I thought about having my own business back in the day 10 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter, working on my MBA and thinking what's next.

Speaker 3:

So probably all the hormones and the school experience brought me to think about a new energy, new things to start, and we started Grunberg accounting and we were providing some accounting and bookkeeping and consulting services in the Boston area in the Boston area.

Speaker 2:

Wow. So how did you end up in Charlotte?

Speaker 3:

Wow. So how did you end up in Charlotte?

Speaker 2:

Four years ago, during COVID, we decided to start again over and move south there.

Speaker 3:

Well, I think the word is out. Everybody's heard how fabulous Charlotte is. It is. The weather is gorgeous here and it's beautiful it is.

Speaker 2:

We love it. Yeah, People say you know when you can sometimes wear flip flops in January, it's a good thing. So, Grumburg Accounting, talk to us a little bit about what you guys do and specialize in.

Speaker 3:

So we started with providing business in different fields to all industries and we narrowed down to the food industry. We provide bookkeeping, accounting and consulting to restaurants, bars and caterings. We support the business through the year. We provide the service on a monthly basis. We tailor and customize our service to the needs of the restaurant. Over the years we discovered and worked on ways and keynotes that are very important for this industry and we try to stay on top of that.

Speaker 2:

Why this industry? Do you have a history in it yourself?

Speaker 3:

I think it's a funny story because many years ago, we owned a restaurant Before we got married. We started our life and our careers before school, before everything, with trying and owning an italian restaurant. It was a very challenging experience and the end of the day, we managed it. And but, the, the, the rocks were heated on the way where, um, I wish somebody was there for us to help us and avoid it, and I think the combination of it that's what makes us passionate about it, about the food industry, particularly the food industry. It takes us back to that.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely, and you have firsthand knowledge. So when you moved here in COVID, give us some examples of a success story, possibly of a client that you worked with and you helped them navigate what COVID did to the business so COVID was very tricky and scary, particularly for the food and restaurant businesses.

Speaker 3:

It was a total lockdown. We had clients that didn't work like the catering industry. They didn't work for six months and some of them a year and more than that, and they managed to stay in the business. We were on top of all the releases that the government made. We helped businesses straight and right away to get the PPP loans, to get the forgiveness, to get the credit, the tax credit. It was very crucial and important to be fast with the reports and all the to collect all the information that was needed to get the support. I can proudly say that none of our clients went out of the business during the COVID.

Speaker 2:

That is amazing, absolutely amazing. So help us understand the difference between an accountant and, let's say, someone that does your taxes. How do you do it about?

Speaker 3:

that Usually you do your taxes with your CPA, especially if it's a business tax. It's a one-time thing. You do it annually. You gather all your information, you go to your CPA, you file your taxes and you're done until the next time. Our services are more about managing your books, managing your day-to-day records, consulting about how to operate, because the food industry is very seasonal. Sometimes you have a higher profit, sometimes you have a lower profit. At the end of the day, we are there to make your business profitable with reports, with consulting, with collecting the data, with helping you manage your tax letters or any notices that you get from the local government. We help with your sales tax, any changes with the sales tax, with audits, everything that is not tax filing, let's say it this way.

Speaker 2:

And it's a monthly service, it's not once in a year okay, and I'm not sure, if you mentioned payroll, you do payroll yeah, we do payroll as well. Yeah, everything cash flow yeah, it sounds like a very important piece that maybe a lot of business owners don't think about. Outside of having a CPA, what do you wish people knew about what you guys do?

Speaker 3:

I wish people to know the old joke that's saying that you need to trust three professionals in your life a lawyer, a doctor and your accountant. So I wish people to know that I am a real partner and you won't find any better cheerleader to your business than I am, because my business depends on your business. So I'm there through all the way to help and support and make the business successful from the back office point of view, because many managers of restaurants and and the food industry in general, they are so busy with operating the business that they don't have time and they don't put time on looking into finance and paperwork and all the boring stuff. Right, I am for that you are exactly right.

Speaker 2:

So what area do you work?

Speaker 3:

charlotte only we work around the us, we work remotely, so we have we have clients all over the us in different states. We're familiar with the, with the local sales tax regulations, mills tax regulations.

Speaker 2:

So you can work with anybody. That's pretty amazing. So when you and your husband are not running the company, what do you like to do for fun around here?

Speaker 3:

So I like to spend time with friends. I like to read when I have time. We welcomed a new baby last August. It's our third boy.

Speaker 2:

Wow.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, no, we have a boy, a girl and a boy. We have three kids. Okay, three kids. Got it, yeah, and we decided, with a new baby, that we're going to travel and create. The next decade is going to be dedicated to creating memories together, as a family.

Speaker 2:

Where's one of the top places you want to visit as a family?

Speaker 3:

Oh, I have such a long list I don't even know where to start. I was so busy with school and work and kids that I didn't have much time to travel. I think the next station, the next place in the States, is the Grand Canyon, and outside the States will be probably Spain, so that's-.

Speaker 2:
