Speaker 2Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of the Good Neighbor Podcast. I'm here in South Charlotte and one of my favorite things to do is connect with local business owners in our community, learn more about them and their services. And today I'm super excited I'm chatting with Jason Julian. He is the owner of Reign Moving Solutions. Welcome, jason.
Speaker 3Thanks for having me.
Speaker 2Absolutely. I've heard of you guys. I've seen your trucks going down the road here in South Charlotte. How long have you been doing this?
Speaker 3So we just celebrated our five-year anniversary in March and we're excited to be such a cornerstone in the community.
Speaker 2Oh, I love it and I love the name Reign. Tell us, is there a backstory to the name of the business?
Speaker 3So we are a Christian-based company and we chose the name Reign just to conquer, to be above all, so we try to place ourselves at the top of the industry and just be a great asset to people that are looking to move.
Speaker 2Well, I love that and Charlotte is a booming area. I don't know, are you moving more people out or in, cause you do short distance and long right.
From Finance to Moving Industry
Speaker 3Yes, so we'll do anything from just moving a piece of furniture around in the house to go in cross country. So we're like a shuttle bus from New York right now we bring everyone back and forth and then we go from California, washington State, wherever you need to go.
Speaker 2Oh my gosh, that is crazy. Well, I don't know the statistics, but I know there's a lot of numbers of people moving in and into Charlotte every day Super exciting. Well, first tell me a little bit about how you got into this industry and then we'll talk about everything you guys do and offer.
Speaker 3Oh, that's awesome. So I have my degree in finance. I worked for Compass Group whenever I first got out of college and I did moving on the weekends. I just I did power lifting at the time I liked picking stuff up and then it was a good way to earn extra money. And then I noticed that there was no customer service in this industry and that there was such a gap between clients' needs and what they got. So I thought I'd fill that void and it was actually very, very simple because there was such a low bar in the industry. So it was easy to come in and kind of take over and we try to really place ourselves as like the white glove mover and make sure that it's a seamless experience.
Speaker 2That's incredible. So in those early days, how did you get customers?
Speaker 3So a lot of word of mouth. We would just really try to go the extra mile for clients, make sure they're extremely satisfied and then you know, they tell their friends. So it's strictly been word of mouth throughout the process, Like we do some Facebook ads here and there, but really it's more about just building relationships.
Speaker 2That's wonderful. Well, I noticed on your website you do more than moving, so share a little bit about all the services you guys offer.
Speaker 3So we do everything from a full pack unpack. We also partner with different organizers in the area that can help take you all the way from A to Z and do the bins and the organization on the other side, so we can handle as much or as little as people need on that front. We also offer fully climate controlled storage If you have like an intermediary where you need storage options. So we try to be an all in solution.
Speaker 2And I see you do residential and commercial moves.
Speaker 3Yes, ma'am, so we'll do. We'll do anything from just moving small items in the house to a full house move, and then we'll also do commercial moves for small offices all the way up to, you know, bigger, bigger facilities.
Speaker 2Sure. So I guess having a great staff is the key to doing and maintaining your reputation. Talk to us about how you retain, or how you train and retain, your staff.
Staff Retention and Customer Experience
Speaker 3So we try to hire based on people wanting to come work for us. We try to, you know, pay our guys well, I think we're one of the highest paying moving companies in the area. So whenever you know guys come to us, they really want to earn the spot with us. So they come in trying to prove themselves. And that's kind of how I've always gone about hiring. Um, I don't really seek people out, I want them to seek us so that we we become a spot where people strive to be able to work, um, and that really helps us keep our people. We we have. Most of our guys have been with us since I've started and, um, so we have a really great staff. We have 45 employees now and they're all really great guys and they work with us every day. So they, you know, we build a relationship and we try to treat them like a family.
Speaker 2That's incredible. Well, it must be working great. So to do a quote for someone's moves, describe the question.
Cross-Country Moving Process Explained
Speaker 3So we can either do an in-person quote or a virtual estimate where we'll do like a FaceTime walk through the house, take a look at everything, see how much they're moving, how much manpower they need, how much space they need. If they're moving out of state, we give them a guaranteed price and we're a little different than a lot of moving companies that move people cross country and that we have the same guys that load them, drive them and unload them. So like if you're coming from New York, we would load you on day one with the same crew. It would just be your stuff on the truck. We drive the next day and then we deliver on day three. So it gives you a quick turnaround. It's just your stuff on the truck. So all the horror stories that you kind of hear online about things getting misplaced or prices doubling or anything, we try to combat that on the front end and just provide them a really stress-free experience. And then California we typically take three days drive to get back over here.
Speaker 2Wow, Wow. Three guys in a truck, the same truck. I guess that can be challenging that many days together, but I love that that you do that much. So what is some of the most challenging things in your industry that you face?
Speaker 3I would say, you know, making sure that clients are always understand the whole process and how we do things to make sure that they have a great experience and I guess what I mean by that is moving is so stressful it's like one of the most stressful things that people go through in their lives. So really helping clients work and navigate through that so that we can make sure that they have a great experience and, just you know, helping them to understand how much they're going to be able to get done prior to the move and making sure that we're there to help pick up any pieces in case they're not able to get all their packing done or they need extra help or they realize maybe they have a little bit more than they thought they had for the move.
Speaker 2Yeah, I know, when I moved kind of long distance, the moving company came to the house and actually estimated how many boxes I needed and what sizes. Is that part of your process?
Speaker 3Yes, ma'am, so we'll go in and we can estimate exactly how many boxes you'll need. We also have all our own branded boxes so we can bring them out there prior to the move. So our clients, if they're doing their own packing, they can start packing things up and getting prepped. I always tell people too, like we have some people that don't want, you know, want us to handle the whole thing from A to Z, and then we have some people that want to cut costs as much as they can. We never lower hourly rates, it's just a standard that we have. But we always help people try to fit within their budget. So, like, if someone has a certain budget for their move, we try to maneuver what we can do and we let come up the game plan on what they need to do prior to the move to help make sure we fit within their budget.
Speaker 2Oh, I love that. Yeah, that makes a lot of common sense. What are some of the misconceptions you find when you're dealing with potential clients?
Speaker 3I would say more along the lines of what they read online and the fears that they have going into a move just with being taken advantage of not knowing who's in their home. I mean, it's a very intimate process, like we're taking all their memories they have in their house and all their items and we're putting it in a truck, so making sure that they really have confidence in you know the company that they're using and the people that that company is hiring to you know move their belongings from A to B. So I guess just you know guiding them through that process and making sure that we build that trust with them along the way.
Speaker 2So in the customer feedback you get, you know what are you known for. Kind of summarize that for us.
Speaker 3I would say, providing a great experience and also always sitting on my client side of the table and making sure that they're happy in the end. I always tell people, moving is very variable. We always want things to go perfect and sometimes things can go wrong, and we always have our clients back and make sure they're happy so that we I just can never let a client walk away unhappy.
Speaker 2I love that. Where did that inspiration come from to build your business that way?
Speaker 3I was. I was taught when I was growing up you know if you're going to. If you're going to do something, do it 100 percent. When I was growing up, you know if you're going to. If you're going to do something, do it a hundred percent. And, um, you know, if I don't do a hundred percent, I want to make sure my client's taken care of, and that's how we built our reputation and I feel like that's how we've been able to get so far.
Speaker 2And the Christian principles, I'm sure as well. A hundred percent, yeah. So when you're not running this fabulous company, what do you do for fun?
Speaker 3So I like to go to the gym and then I have a 13 year old daughter. So you know we'll go out and do different things, do different activities. We walk around a lot at the Ballantyne Bowl I love that they built that and just try to hang out and relax as much as we can.
Speaker 2Yeah, what are some of your favorite restaurants in Charlotte?
Speaker 3So I love Maggiano's.
