Speaker 2:Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Joining us today in our studio is Nancy Hughes. She is a realtor at Jack Conway Realty. Nancy, how are you today? Very good and yourself Wonderful. I am great. Thank you for asking, Nancy. We are excited to have you here and we're eager to learn more about your service in the North Shore community. Can you please tell the listeners about your service?
Speaker 3:I work for Jack Conway Real Estate. It's an independently owned company. It was started in 1965 by Jack Conway. Most of the offices around 30 of them are on the South Shore and we're the only office on the North Shore. We're not a big nationwide company, but we do have all the services that the nationwide companies have. We have a marketing department. We have a marketing department, we have a financing department, we have attorneys on hand. We can offer everything that all of the larger companies can offer. And this is probably the third company I've worked for and I just love the owners and I just think they're a fabulous company to work for.
Speaker 2:Wonderful, and how did you get into this business?
Speaker 3:I was a teacher and I worked with someone who sold real estate and they were going to change the laws. So currently you can take a course, take a test, get your real estate license to sell. You're a salesperson and way back in the 80s they would allow you to take a test to get your broker's license. So real estate always kind of fascinated me. I was always picking up the newspaper, seeing what was on the market, what sold. So I passed and I got my broker's license and I probably had it for 10 years before I started selling.
Speaker 2:Okay, so what are some myths or misconceptions in your industry, nancy?
Speaker 3:I think a lot of people think of real estate agents as cutthroat and it is just so wrong. Most of the agents of the North Shore, even though we work for different companies, we come across each other every day with sales, with listings. We're really a very nice group of people and we're very nice to each other and very fair. So I think that's a real misconception.
Speaker 2:Wonderful and outside of work. What do you do for fun, nancy?
Speaker 3:Well, I'm a former math teacher so I also tutor math because I love it. So that's kind of my fun, and I suppose reading books and going to the beach is also my fun. It's how I decompress.
Speaker 2:Those sound like great outlets, though.
Speaker 3:They are, they are. They keep me sane.
Speaker 2:So changing gears. Nancy, can you describe one hardship or one of life's challenge that you rose above and can now say because of it you're better and stronger? What comes to your mind?
Speaker 3:About 34 years ago, swampscott built a playground called Kids Cove. It's no longer there. It was at Phillips Park but many people may have remembered it and the premise of the construction is they send a group to the town, they meet with the children of the town, they come up with a plan and a design and they build the playground over a five-day period. They have five I believe it was five people from the company that designs and instruments all of this, and then they have contractors in town who donate their time and, under the contractor, volunteers. So I volunteered to be head of the food committee. What I did realize is I had to feed three meals a day to 300 people, with no budget and no facilities. I literally had a 10 o'clock lot and this was before the Internet and I did it. No one wanted to be on my committee. I begged. It was quite a process to do this and after doing it I was so proud of myself. I figured if I could do this, I could do anything.
Speaker 2:That sounds great. I'm sure those that benefited from it really appreciated your sacrifice.
Speaker 3:Yes, yes, and you know, it was there for so many years and my children enjoyed it, as did many children of the community.
Speaker 2:Beautiful Nancy. Please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Jack Conway Realty.
Speaker 3:We're right here in Swanscott, 410 Humphrey Street, right across from the harbor. You can stop in, you can call, you can email me, call me If you're interested in finding out what the buying process is, what the selling process is. I'm happy to sit down and meet with you. No obligation, no cost. It's a journey and most people they may buy several cars in a lifetime or furniture. Many people buy two, maybe three properties in a lifetime. So it's not a process that you do every day and from state to state things are different. It's not the same. So if you sold a house in New York, the process there is very different than it is up here. So I think my teaching background kind of kicks in, because I enjoy helping people through a process. I'm a great hand holder. I like to give everyone information so they know what to expect as far as cost, the process etc.
Speaker 2:Beautiful. And how can our listeners learn more about Jack Conway Realty Nancy?
Speaker 3:They can give me a call and they can come down to the office and I'm happy to sit down and let them know all about our company.
Speaker 2:Wonderful Nancy. We're so excited to have had you on the show. We appreciate your insight, your input, your information that you shared with our listeners.
