Jesus The Master of the Sea

HopeUC Secunderabad

Feeling abandoned in life's storms? You're not alone. Just like the disciples in the stormy Sea of Galilee, we often wonder, 'God, don't you care?' Yet with three powerful words—'Peace, be still'—Jesus calmed the raging waves. This episode reminds us that while His presence doesn't always stop the storm, it ensures we're never alone in it. No matter what you're facing, take heart—He is the Master of the Sea.

Speaker 1:

right now we are in a series. We are talking about what jesus makes possible. This is the second week of the series that we are following. If you are not part of a live group, I would highly encourage you to be a part of a live group, because this is what we are studying through our live groups and through our Sunday sermon times over here. So last week we heard about how Jesus can meet your needs and today we're looking at how Jesus calms the storms in our lives. So the title of my message I put it across as Jesus the master of the sea. That's what we're going to look at today. So if you have your Bibles, turn with me to Mark, chapter 4, verse 35. Mark, chapter 4, verse 35.

Speaker 1:

On the same day, when evening had come, he said to them let us cross over to the other side. Now, when they had left the multitude that they took, they took him along in the boat as he was, and other little boats were also with him, and a great windstorm arose and the waves bet into the boat so that it was already filling. But he was in the stern asleep on a pillow, and they awoke him and said to him Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing. Then he arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea Peace be still. And the wind ceased and there was a great calm. And he said to them why are you so fearful? How is it that you have?

Speaker 1:

Now, if you look at the gospel narratives, so much of Jesus' life is centered around the sea, right? So much of Jesus' life took place by the sea and in the sea. He was always teaching large crowds by the sea, always traveling on the sea with his disciples, okay, and looks like the sea was his platform, like a pulpit for him. He preached so many things over there and sea was probably one of the favorite places, because most times you find him at the sea. Okay, his followers, many of his followers, the disciples, were also fishermen and their lives revolved around the sea. So Jesus and his disciples had a lot to do with the sea, around the sea. So Jesus and his devils had a lot to do with the sea.

Speaker 1:

Now, actually, jesus actually moved from his hometown to the side of the sea. You find that in Matthew, chapter 4, verse 13. It says he leaving Nazareth, okay, leaving Nazareth. He went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake, okay, by the lake waters. So Jesus actually moved his home from Nazareth to a place by the lake, by the waters, okay, so we see so much of what Jesus does is around water, seas and lakes. He taught, he healed, he saved many people. Okay, he called his disciples, who were all having carriers on the sea, to follow him in their lives. And you see this so much evident in the life of Jesus.

Speaker 1:

In Matthew, chapter 13, verse 1, it says the same day went Jesus out of the house and sat by the seaside. That's not something not unusual to Jesus, it's a common thing for him. Okay, he used to go by the sea and people used to gather. And he begins to preach In Mark, chapter 4, verse 1,. You all see the same. It says again Jesus began to teach by the lake. The crowd that gathered around him was so large that he got into a boat and sat it out on the lake while all the people were along the shore, at the water's edge. And Jesus did this quite often.

Speaker 1:

Okay, this is not the only time. Many times you would see people, you would be at the seashore and people would gather and they would preach from the shore. Sometimes he'll get onto the boat and he preached from the boat. So that was Jesus. So on this occasion, too, it was something like that. He started off early in boat and he'll preach from the boat. So that was Jesus. So on this occasion, too, it was something like that. It started off early in the morning. He was teaching, teaching to the people. He was preaching to the people and when the evening came, okay, jesus said okay, let's go to the other side. Let's go to the other side. So it might be probably remained in the boat because he was already in the boat preaching. So he was remaining in the boat and said okay, let's go to the other side. So, along with his disciples, okay, they started the journey.

Speaker 1:

Maybe Jesus had a demanding schedule. You know he's preached all day, okay, and he wanted some break time. He wanted some downtime for him to refresh himself, for him to be alone and to gain his energy or strength. That's very important. Sometimes we don't do that in our lives. Some of us, we call ourselves workaholics Good, yeah, we can laugh at it Workaholics, workaholics and sometimes you need to get a leave out of jesus's life. Okay, even though he had a busy day, he made sure time and time again, he took time to be alone, to refresh himself, to connect with the father, because sometimes you say he went to connect with the father and be in prayer and refresh, re-energize himself, and sometimes our lives have become so work-paced, so fast-paced. Sometimes time is the valuable thing that we have. Nowadays we struggle for time, right, and if we can follow the life of Jesus, sometimes it took time to be away from everybody just to connect with God and also refresh himself. So this is probably that's why Jesus said okay, let's go to the other side. Okay. So they wanted to have a leisure evening, a calm evening. Okay, no more ministry, no more work, let's spend time together.

Speaker 1:

So as they were traveling, their leisure evening turned into something else. Their night was disrupted by a sudden violent storm. And that's not unusual. Actually, on the sea over there, it's not unusual. Sometimes storms come, they last for some time and they go. Okay, you can expect that on the sea sometimes and during those times. But this storm was different because it caught the disciples by surprise. Now you got to understand. The disciples are fishermen, by the way. They were experts on the sea, they knew the way of the sea Right, but this storm, they must have experienced many storms in their workplace, in their business, like fishing. But this storm was different. This storm, they realized this is different and it caught their attention. Okay, it caught their attention and they realized, okay, we're not going to make it, we might not get to the other side of the shore. And so they were all afraid.

Speaker 1:

And sometimes, often in our lives too, we encounter these kind of things. So I want us to make a point, I want to understand a point here today. Okay, the presence of Jesus does not shield us from the storms of life. The presence of Jesus does not shield us from the storms of life. Now look at their situation. Jesus was along with them, he was in the boat, but still they experienced the storms.

Speaker 1:

And often we can get into this understanding okay, if we feel like, if we are with the lord jesus, we will never run into trouble, that being a christian prevents you from being subject to disruptions in your lives. That's not a good idea. That's not. That's very unhealthy notion. Okay, probably has good intentions, but it's very unhealthy. Sometimes we can think because we have, we are with jesus is with us, life will go very smoothly. Okay, we will be successful, our children will be healthy, we'll our financial ventures will prosper and everything. There will be no disappointment. But if you have observed in your life, having Jesus does not exempt you from the troubles of life right, troubles of life are part of us.

Speaker 1:

Okay, the disciples experienced that just because Jesus was in the boat did not exempt them from facing or a storm in their lives. So if you follow, if you have followed Jesus for any length of time, you would have known by this. Now, right, you experience hardships, you experience unexpected things that come your way and in this story, this experience, veteran professional fishermen were thoroughly frightened. These guys were experienced. They were thoroughly frightened. The same sea that they used to navigate well was the same sea that they were afraid of during this time.

Speaker 1:

But if you look at Jesus, it says the Lord Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. I wonder where the pillow came from. Bible records are small, but it's not a luxury cruise. It's not a cruise luxury liner. It's a small boat. There were other small boats along with that. I don't know if Jesus found a soft cushion pillow like we all love to have, or maybe it was just, maybe a bunch of rope what you can find in a boat.

Speaker 1:

Okay, whatever, whatever Jesus was lying on, it was a pillow for him and he was sleeping peacefully. I know some of us have the gift of that Right. Some of us can sit there and sleep. You don't need even a pillow. I know a couple of people in my life. They can sit and sleep. Jesus probably was tired too. He was gone. He was gone.

Speaker 1:

And the disciples. The reality for the disciples was hey, jesus is oblivious to what's going around us. They were thinking for them. The reality was Jesus is not caring for us, jesus is not protecting us. That was their reality and they were panicking and panicking. And we see in the story it says they awoke Jesus. They woke up Jesus and said teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? Teacher, do you not care? How many times, how many million times, we have asked the same question in million situations in our lives? Teacher, do you not care? Master, don't you care? Maybe it's a health situation with you, maybe a financial situation with you, maybe a job situation with you, and you are financial situation with you, maybe a job situation with you, and you are asking the same question. You are panicking and probably this is the same question that's lingering in your heart, in your mind, jesus. Don't you care, lord? Jesus, don't you care that my child is sick? Don't you care that my marriage is falling apart? Don't you care that my friends have deserted me? Don't you care that my friends have deserted me? Don't you care that I have no money? Don't you care that I feel so alone? Don't you care that I want to give up? Don't you care that my husband is dead or my spouse is dead? Don't you care that I lost my job? Lord, don't you care? Don't you care?

Speaker 1:

We all have asked this question so many times in our lives, including me. I have asked this question Don't you care, lord? And it's very tempting to respond in that way, because sometimes the storms that we encounter in our life are not manageable by us. We want to manage situations, but some of the things is just beyond us, it's beyond our control. We are absolutely at the mercy of the circumstances. It's just beyond us, it's beyond our control. We are absolutely at the mercy of the circumstances and can do nothing. Anyone experience that you can do nothing in the situation. Nothing. Maybe your expert, your expertise fails sometimes. Nothing in our own power to change them, just like this sometimes. I know we all have asked this question Lord don't you care, lord don't you care.

Speaker 1:

But the fact of the matter is that Jesus was there with them. He was together with the disciples and he was going through the same situation. He was going through the same situation other than them. Jesus did not have a different set of situations. He was there. He was going through the same situation other than them. Jesus did not have a different set of situations. He was there. He could feel the waves crashing against the boat. He was there with them, and that's something that we all need to notice today. Jesus is there with us in the midst of our storms. He is journeying along with us. God is journeying along with us. God is journeying along with you today, maybe. Whatever storm you faced, I want you to know that Jesus is right, there with you.

Speaker 1:

The reality for the disciples was that they are going to drown and maybe they will die, but for Jesus, the reality was quite different. As far as Jesus was concerned, their lives were was quite different. As far as Jesus was concerned, their lives were never at risk. As far as he was concerned, he was always near to them. The word of God says he will never leave us nor forsake us. As far as he was concerned, he could hear their cries and when the disciples came and woke him up, he woke up and immediately, and he says he arose and rebuked the wind and said to the sea peace, be still. It says rebuked over here.

Speaker 1:

I've seen so many movies about Jesus. I've seen some times when they depict the story Jesus would just wave his hand, that's it, and it became still and it says Jesus rebuked. So probably he must have shouted, shouted out peace, a quiet, be still. Or I don't know. He could have said peace In whatever way. He would have said the sea would have done the same thing. He would have done the same thing. You know why? Because he is the master of the sea. He is the master of the sea. He is the master of the sea. And it says over here, a great calm came about. Now, actually, if you look at the passage in the beginning, it says a great windstorm. And they'll use the same word great calm, great windstorm and great calm. So no matter how big your wind storm, how great your windstorm is, there can be great calmness, great peace that Jesus can bring into our lives when a strong wind at sea dies down, the waves will be in motion for a while. The waves will be in motion for a while, but in this case, I believe the waves came to a standstill stillness.

Speaker 1:

Max Lucado writes something like this. He says Jesus didn't even need a remote. He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves quiet, be still. Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He didn't chant a mantra or wave a van. No angels were called, no help was needed. The raging water became a stilled sea Instantly.

Speaker 1:

You know the message Bible actually records in Matthew, chapter 8, another passage Matthew 8, 23, sorry, 26. It says Jesus reprimanded them. Why are you such cowards, such faint hearts? Then he stood up and told them to be silent, the sea to be quiet. Down, silence, silence, it says. The sea became smooth as glass Calm. Glass doesn't move, no waves, glass is calm.

Speaker 1:

The disciples responded Mark, chapter 4. Mark, chapter 4. It says verse 41. Probably. They were in absolute awe, staggered. Who is this anyway? Who is this anyway? They asked Wind and sea at his beck and call Jesus the master of the sea at his beck and call. That's what he is the master of the sea at his beck and call. That's what he is the son of God, the God himself, the master of the sea, who can command the wind, the waves and all the circumstances of our lives that seem so out of control. He says he is the master of it all. No, this was not something new, because he's been like that. God has been like that.

Speaker 1:

You see, in the Old Testament, you know, in Psalm 107, verse 29, the Psalmist records something powerful. Psalm 107, verse 29, he says he stilled the storm to a whisper. The waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm and he guided them to their desired haven. He's been doing that all the time. Right, he stilled the storm. How come he does that? In Job, chapter 9, verse 8. Talks about creation. He says he alone stretches out the storm. How come he does that? In Job, chapter 9, verse 8, talks about creation. He says he alone stretches out the heavens and he treads on the waves of the sea. That's his nature he walks on the sea, treads on the waves of the sea. He's been doing that all the time. So if he's been doing that all the time, he can still do right now, in each one of our lives too, and Jesus makes it clear on a number of occasions, other times also, that he showed himself as a lord or the master of the sea.

Speaker 1:

Okay, matthew, chapter 14, verse 25, is another time. There was another storm, this time now. This time Jesus was not in the boat with them. He does a mighty miracle, actually, he feeds the five thousand in this, in the Now. This time Jesus was not in the boat with them. He does a mighty miracle, actually, he feeds the 5,000. Before this, he feeds the 5,000.

Speaker 1:

Again, once again, probably, he started. He said okay, I need to spend some time away. You go away and I'll join you guys later. So he wanted to spend time in prayer. And this time, the disciples go by themselves. Okay, disciples go by themselves. And again they were faced with a storm, and this storm was also fearful. Once again, okay, they didn't know what was going to happen and Jesus walks to them.

Speaker 1:

I want you to understand that, even though you feel like Jesus is not present, he's still there, walking towards you, and sometimes it so happens, just like the disciples, they could not recognize him. They could not recognize him. Sometimes, in the dark, we cannot recognize how God is doing things in our lives. We don't recognize the way he's working things in our lives. We cannot see it. The disciples they couldn't see and they cried it's a ghost. It's a ghost, that's what they were looking at, crying out, and Jesus calms them down and say hey, it's me, it's me.

Speaker 1:

And we saw the story of Peter. He says if it's you, jesus, ask me to come and walk on water. And Jesus does a miracle. And we know the story. He's looking at the wind, the boisterous wind, and he sings and Jesus lifts him up. And once again we see once Jesus comes onto the boat, verse 32. Verse 32. It says, when they climbed into the boat, says the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying truly, you are the son of God. And you see this again, time and again, that Jesus demonstrates that he has power over the sea, power over the wind, power over the waves. So if he is master of the seas, he's also the master of every situation, every circumstance that's happening in our lives right now, no matter what storm you're facing. I want you to know today, jesus is still the master. He's still the master. And he says sometimes peace, peace be still To all your situations, to all your circumstances, he's saying peace, be still.

Speaker 1:

The disciples took a while to understand what was happening and he rebukes them. He says hey, you know me. Why are you of so little faith? Why did you doubt? Why did you doubt? And Jesus is also asking the same question to all of us here today. Why are you doubting? Why are you doubting? Why are you doubting Someone?

Speaker 1:

Encourage your church today, stop doubting, stop doubting the protection of God, stop doubting the provision of God. You can't see it sometimes, yes, you and I cannot see it, but always know that he's right there with us. He's walking, journeying along with us and he says don't doubt. Don't doubt, because I'm going to bring peace in your situations, I'm going to calm your storms. Jesus, the master of the sea. And sometimes we experience that in our lives. Sometimes you cry out to Jesus and you see all your situations change. Right, they change and okay, it works out. But there are situations in our lives God allows you to go the full way Because he was trying to do something. Sometimes he'll give you peace in the storm. He'll calm the storm, he'll calm the waves, he'll calm the wind, but sometimes he'll calm you. Sometimes he will calm you more than the situations around, because he's building your character. Now, sometimes we are so agitated inside when things don't go the way we want and Jesus says hey, that's not what I want in you, I want calmness to come in you. So he brings, he tries to calm us. And I want to pick up on a story Once again, a storm again, and how one of the people who believed in Jesus experiences calmness in the storm.

Speaker 1:

Okay, now we see that in the story of Paul in Acts, chapter 27. Okay, paul was on a way to Rome. Okay, he was a prisoner. He was caught up as a prisoner for preaching the gospel and they were going to present him to the emperor because he appeals to the emperor. So he sat on a boat along with some other prisoners and they set on a journey to Rome and even as they were journeying again, we see the similar situation happens.

Speaker 1:

It says they were caught up in a thunderstorm. They were caught up in a thunderstorm. They were caught up in a thunderstorm, so they tried to negate the situation. So everything that was on the ship, that is heavy and which will not going to help them smooth sailing, so they threw everything on the boat, but in the sea. But it didn't help them. And it says three days they were into the storm. Okay, three days into the storm. No sleep, not enough food, water. They don't know what to do and they were starving and they're very frightened and scared.

Speaker 1:

Now Acts, chapter 27, verse 26, like this it says when neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging. Look at that. Storm continued raging. Some of us have storms that will continue raging. There's no letting off it. Storm continued raging. Some of us have storms that will continue raging. There's no letting of it.

Speaker 1:

We finally gave up all hope of being saved. There's only one conclusion for them we are doomed, we're not going to make it. They've given up all hope of being saved, lost all hope of survival. Sometimes we also feel the same when nothing appears to be happening, when things don't go the way we want them to go, and it looks like we cannot do anything, and we lose all hope, just like the sailors. But that time is only. We got to be people who will keep on praying, keep on seeking God, keep on following God. You should never let go of that, never let go of hope. And Paul speaks in that situation to every sailor around them in the boat. And he speaks something powerful in Acts, chapter 27, verse 22.

Speaker 1:

Acts 27, verse 20, says but now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost, only the ship will be destroyed. It says Last night, an angel of the Lord angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve stood beside me and said do not be afraid, paul. You must stand trial before Caesar, and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you. And he says so keep up your courage, for I have faith in God. That's exactly what the disciples the opposite the disciples did. That's exactly what the disciples the opposite, the disciples did. That's right. They lost their courage and they lost their faith. That's why Jesus reprimanded them, saying why don't you have faith? Why did you doubt? But Paul probably heard the stories. Probably he heard the account of what Jesus did and the disciples did.

Speaker 1:

Now he's a disciple of Jesus now and he's encouraging them. He's saying hey, keep up your courage. Turn to your neighbor and say keep up your courage, keep up your courage, keep up your courage. The boat might be going down, but keep up your courage. Things might be going down. Keep up your courage.

Speaker 1:

You know, sometimes the only thing that we can control is our faith in God and our courage. Nobody can take away your faith except you. You know, sometimes you don't have control of the situations around. You don't have the control of which sea you want to walk in, you don't have the choice of it, which storm you'll get into, you don't have control of it. But you always have control of how your faith will act in those situations. Right, that's why Paul says, hey, keep up your courage. Keep up your courage. Your conditions are not always in your control, but your courage is under control. So don't lose hope, don't lose courage. I want to tell you don't lose hope, don't lose your courage.

Speaker 1:

So many of us lost our courage, lost our confidence, lost our hope and we lost our joy. And you know why we lose it so many times. We depend on the boat so much. We depend on our career so much. We depend on our job so much. Nothing wrong with that. But if that's your only thing that you're banking on, sometimes it's going to break, and sometimes God's going to break, and sometimes God's going to break that because he wants your hope, trust totally on him and not on your situations, not on your careers. He wants you to totally build your life on him. Put your faith on him, trust in him. So sometimes the boat's gonna crash, but that's where we got to learn. Just like Paul, he was calm because God gave him peace, in spite of everything that was going around him. The situations didn't change for Paul. No, the situations didn't change for Paul.

Speaker 1:

Even as you see, even as you continue the story, paul says keep up your courage. He says my hope is not in the boat, it's in Christ, the one who doesn't need a boat, the one who walks on waters. And Paul is experiencing calmness in the raging storm and that's why he said keep up your courage. That's why he says keep up your courage, keep up your faith. That's why I said keep up your courage, keep up your faith, lift it up. If you're sinking down, do whatever you can do to lift your courage up. Lift your courage up, okay. And then in verse 33, acts 27, verse 33.

Speaker 1:

Just before dawn, paul urged them all to eat. For the last 14 days he said you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food. You haven't eaten anything. Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Sometimes we need to have some food to survive, okay. And it says not one of you will lose a single hair from his head. It reminds me of what Jesus said in the Gospel. According to Matthew, all the hairs on your head are numbered by him. And verse 35.

Speaker 1:

And he says after he said this, look at what Paul's doing. He took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat. In the midst of the storm, he's having a service. In the midst of the storm, he's having a service he's causing all the leaders if you understand or not, doesn't matter, all of them are not Christians, by the way, they're all prisoners, by the way Sailing all over. He said, okay, let's gather. And he says okay, and this is. He began to give thanks. He began to praise him and he breaks the bread and said okay, he gives communion to every one of them. He said okay, you need this now. In other words, paul was encouraging them to say hey, not only raise your courage, he also said raise your hallelujahs, give thanks. He gave thanks. He said come on, raise your hallelujah, raise your praise.

Speaker 1:

How could Paul come to that place? Because he knew that God was with him. He was calm in the storm Because he knew His faith, his confidence, his courage Is in Christ and nothing moved him. And that's what God wants us to experience sometimes in our lives. He wants us to experience that calmness in that storm, not get agitated. He was not agitated, he was not worried, but he said, okay, god said he's going to take care of us and he will do it.

Speaker 1:

It says actually, it says it will happen. Verse 25 says so, keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen, just as he told me. When Jesus says something, come hail, rain, storms, it will happen, and sometimes you need that calmness to experience that. So God's not changing the situations around, but he's changing you. He says okay, I want you to experience that calmness in the midst of the storm. And we know the story. Actually, it happens. God did not still the storm, by the way, the storm was raging so much, so powerful, that their ship hit a rock and the ship was broken into pieces, totally broken into pieces. Okay, that's the story. Verse 44,.

Speaker 1:

It says the rest were to get there on planks or on other pieces. Some of them could swim, so they swam to the shore. Some of them could not swim. Or on other pieces. Some of them could swim, so they swam to the shore. Some of them could not swim, so this is what they had to do. They rest where to get there? On planks or on other pieces of the ship. In this way, everyone reached land safely. And look at what happened over here. The storm did not stop, the storm went its course, the ship was broken, but everybody who swam could swim. But everybody could not swim. Held on to a piece of wood, a plank, held on to pieces of the ship or planks, and everyone reached safely.

Speaker 1:

I want to encourage you today. Sometimes you get to have hold that little bit of plank that you have. Probably that's your situation today. Everything is gone, the storms haven't stopped and it's so battered, so much, that everything is broken and you only have a small piece. Hold on to that. Hold on to that. That word represents the cross of Jesus Christ. The word is the alone, is the only thing that will keep you afloat. Don't let it go. Don't let it go, don't lose hope, even if you're holding onto a plank.

Speaker 1:

And Paul says to us today come on, don't give up on hope, raise your courage, keep up your courage, raise your hallelujahs, worship Him. That's why we got to learn to worship Him in our difficulties. Learn to worship Him in our storms, praise in our problems, dance in our darkness. How can we do that? When we have calmness inside. That's the only way we can do that. If you're agitated, you'll be cursing, you'll be blaming, but if there's calmness, peace in your heart, you'll be praising. And that's what Jesus aims in us. Sometimes he'll calm the situations around. Sometimes he'll say, okay, the storm is going to rage, but I want you to be calm in that situation.

Speaker 1:

Someone maybe I don't know what your situation is today I want to encourage you today Don't lose hope, don't doubt, don't lose hope. Keep up your courage and raise your hallelujahs. I want you to know today, no matter what your situation is, jesus is still the master of the sea, is also the master of our lives. Psalm 65, verse 7, says who still the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves and the turmoil of the nations. He's still the master. I want to read this passage and close Isaiah 43, reading from verse one from the message Bible. Just listen to these words. It says now God's message. Look at this the God who made you in the first place, jacob, the one who got you started, israel, don't be afraid, I've redeemed you. I've called your name. You are mine. When you are in over your head, I'll be there with you. When you are in rough waters, you will not go down. When you are between a rock and a hard place, it won't be a dead end, because I am God, your personal God.
