Durham, North Carolina—On January 4th, 2007, 25-year-old Denita Smith—a graduate student at North Carolina Central University with a promising future—was found fatally shot at the bottom of her apartment staircase. Who would want to harm such a beautiful woman? Denita was described by many as kindhearted, focused, and well on her way to crafting the life she dreamed of. Denita was planning her dream wedding to her fiancé of six years–Jermeir Stroud at the time of her murder. The lingering question in this case–What would drive someone to commit such a cold-blooded act of murder?
