Shirley King shares her transformative journey from achievement-based success to true fulfillment through her book "Bold and Thriving: Seeking Fulfillment Beyond Success." Her story reveals how God guided her to incorporate personal journal entries documenting her hardest years, creating a powerful testimony of healing.

• The book took 1.5 years to complete as God led Shirley through her own healing process
• Shirley explains the three-stage healing framework: Healed, Empowered, and Restored
• Many people stop at healing and empowerment but don't reach the crucial restoration stage
• High-functioning anxiety allowed Shirley to perform well externally while struggling internally
• After complete healing, Shirley no longer experiences debilitating nervousness when speaking or coaching
• Purpose is what you HAVE to do while passion is how you feel when doing it
• Finding your "superpower" helps you leap forward, get in the right rooms, and say no to what doesn't align
• Childhood experiences before age nine significantly impact our adult behaviors and responses
• The book contains poems strategically placed to soothe readers after challenging sections
• God described it as a "forever book" meant to be revisited in different seasons of life

Speaker 1:

Hi, everyone, welcome. Thank you for joining us today on our Positioned for Purpose Conversations with Colette Marie podcast. I'm your host, colette Marie. Yes, our podcast is for women of faith who struggle to see God in the places of pain and hardship and who need a reminder, a gentle reminder, that right where you are, god will use you in the mess, in the hardships, in your most challenging times, in your heartaches and in your pain. God has a greater plan for your story, romans 8, 28 states. For we know that all things work together for good to them that love God and are the God according to his purpose. And today we have a very, very special guest with us.

Speaker 1:

Her name is shirley king and who is coach shirley? She's a certified psychological safety practitioner and a certified commissioned transformational coach. Her fulfillment strategist coaching for women over 40 is her hard work coaching women over 40 not to not only be bold in her moves but thrive, refraining from relying on achievement solely when shirley isn't leading award-winning hr teams. Corporately, she traveled and deeply connected with family. She's the Chief Solutions Officer at Optimize Solutions Group, optimizing operational processes with transformative leadership and people solution with evidence-based methods and AI-driven solutions. Shirley is frequently recruited to customize and facilitate training programs around the leadership and relationship building. That's just a snippet of who Shirley is.

Speaker 1:

But can I tell you who Shirley is to me? I find her to be not only a sister in Christ, but a coach and a mentor, someone who gives of herself freely and without reservations, someone who is your champion, in your corner, who sees you, who hears you, who understands you. And can I tell you something? In reading this book, I think I might have said to Shirley maybe once or twice and if you know me, I can say things a couple times over, when things really hit me I felt a deep connection to Shirley after we had our very first coaching session and I could not understand why. I felt like I knew her and I felt like she really was my sister. But can I tell you something? When I read this book Bold and Thriving, seeking Fulfillment Beyond Success I understood why. I understood why I felt this connection with her. It just is a God thing when he calls and aligns you with someone and sometimes we run away. We're not quite sure why the alignment is there. We don't need to know why in the moment, but at the right time God will. And also what I've learned. I'm sorry I'm jumping in, but let me just boast about the book quickly.

Speaker 1:

Honestly, when I jumped into this book and I read about her healed, empowered, restored, I understood that I was her. I needed to know that. Know that I was her. That's just one thing I can tell you, but I won't go into it. I leave you to pick up your own thing. I want to tell you. That's just one thing I can tell you, but I won't go into it. I leave you to pick up your own thing. I want to tell you that's the one I do. Before I read the book, I knew I wanted to speak to her, but the very moment I read the book, I knew I wanted to speak to her. Now, shirley, welcome and thank you for joining us on Position for Purpose.

Speaker 2:

Conversations. Thank you so much. Thank you for asking me to join you. I don't take it lightly when someone asks me to join a platform. I appreciate the support and you know I appreciate how you describe Bold and Thriving. The other day when you sent it, I don't know a week ago I'm still walking on just clouds, because it means that I got it right. Yes, got it right.

Speaker 1:

That's what that meant to me. Tell us about Bold and Thriving. Tell us how you got to that journey.

Speaker 2:

It was a long journey the book took. One of my friends said you always say 1.5 years because that's exactly how long it took for me to write the book. I literally announced it 1.5 years ago. I had book sales from then because people know my character, they know what I deliver and they know what I can do, so announcing that I'm writing the book and it's on pre-order. I remember I I was traveling in with that. Within that day it was like 50 orders already, yeah, purchased, and so I had a timeline. Yeah, well, I sent my book to the publisher. It was on time to the publisher. My publisher is a, a God-fearing Christian woman.

Speaker 2:

Prophet is all those things right yes and so when I sent it to her, she said that she called me. She said, shirley, this is not enough. And I said you know, what I wanted to do initially was, you know, give something. That was just a strategy. And she said, you know, you know your stuff, but this is not enough. Yes, and I remember, just sitting back going in at that day, my mom had sprained her ankle or something and I was actually in the emergency room at the hospital.

Speaker 2:

So I'm sitting waiting for her. So I'm sitting back, going put in it, and so I kept contemplating over it. I'm trying to add but it doesn't just feel right what I was adding. Finally, the Holy Spirit said what I need you to add is entries from your journal on those hard years. I write a lot, I journal a lot, so writing is not so. I know how to put words together and journaling. My journaling is asking God and writing down God's response. Writing down you know what I feel about God's response. What happened like? So I do some deep journaling, and so when the Holy Spirit said that I put the book down and didn't pick it back up for eight months at least, what I realized.

Speaker 2:

is that so, man, god is so good and he doesn't just heal you right? He does 360. Yeah he can't heal you in one place and then try to use you as a weapon for his people when you're still leaking right, and so that's exactly what happened. I had some more work to do.

Speaker 2:

I had done a lot of work but had some more, had a founder therapist. I had done a lot of work but had some more, had a founder therapist that was perfect, a spiritual, a Christian psychologist. One session after my first session with her, a week later, I was at my desk working and the book is in my purview because of where I sit in my office. I looked up and saw the journal and I said, all right, I did just like this. All right, lord, we're going to do this today. All right, holy Spirit is on you. I took the book and then I got my laptop and as I went through it, holy Spirit, this section right here, add this All right, how do you want? How do you want it in there? When I typed it up, I looked at it and it looks exactly what came from my journal, but it's in book form. Yes, I couldn't do that. Yeah, couldn't do that, and it took two days.

Speaker 2:

I finished it. I sent it to my publisher. She said I thought you had given up, I hadn't given up on you, but I. She said I thought you had given up, I hadn't given up on you, but I thought you had given up. Yes, and she went into what she does to get it printed and you know and all those things. But the holy spirit literally wrote this book. I had no idea how to put what I was experiencing, yeah, what god was telling me, because that's what you got, a lot of what God told me and showed me in my heart years. Yes, yes.

Speaker 1:

Yes, as you talk about just going through your journal entries and just not everything. The Lord just wanted you to just write what he knew would be beneficial to every woman who was reading, and I liked one of the things that you said about not leaking. God had to just take you through a place of being her and you were talking about her and, as we, I could see the healing on the pages. I could feel the healing on the pages and so that was why, when you wanted to write it, you weren't at the place yet to write it. He had to just take you through this. It had to take 1.5 years because God had something that he wanted to do within you.

Speaker 1:

This book had to be birthed. This book had to be birthed from a place of that you becoming her to allowing us to either be becoming her, see that we are her, and reach to be her. I underline something from chapter three the journey through your journal. Because what you have conquered, you have the authority to help other people conquer. Feed by sheep. Please feed us with that.

Speaker 2:

What's the entry Chapter?

Speaker 1:

three, because what you have conquered, you have the authority to help other people conquer.

Speaker 2:

Feed my sheep, oh, and so feed my sheep is exactly what God told me. So, as I was having this hard time, you know, getting to the point to finish the book, when he said, when God said, because I got finished I remember I got finished that session I was like I can't believe you gave me this through this person, lord, this person, and I said, I said I got to get the book out, I have to get the book out. And you said feed my sheep. What you have gone through, it wasn't for you, it was for the person. People that I assigned to you. That's who it's for. They're going to. When they hear you, they know you're the beacon, yes, and when they read these words, they will be fed. Yes, my sheep.

Speaker 2:

There is somebody, I mean he. He put, he described it as there's somebody on their knees right now praying to me for you. I'm bashing you for it, but until you show up in it, they're still gonna pray. Keep praying for me for that one thing. They keep keep getting answers, but it's just not. It's not from the right person.

Speaker 1:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Because they're praying for you. I know that they're praying for you. God said I know that they're praying for you.

Speaker 1:

Yes, oh my gosh. And that's so important right that, when God has called us and chosen and purposed us, that we understand that there is someone who we are in alignment with. So the longer we take to get in place, the longer we take to move. Those persons cannot be released, those persons cannot be healed, they cannot be empowered, they cannot be restored if we don't move. And so God took Shirley on a journey when she wanted to write the book and sent it off. God used her publicist, her publisher, to say to her go back, it's not yet finished. And then God had to take her through this process so that she can feed his sheep. Release you. Release us to be who God has called us to be. Yes.

Speaker 2:

You just said something was three prong release me, release and release us, and release those that don't have it, don't even know me yet. Like it was, it was as a. It was a whole setup from the publisher to the idea, to him saying that a part of your life strategy is I need you to leave a book in. You know. So I write a lot. I have so many items in my google drive starting stories and etc. So cetera. So I'm like, oh, that's easy A copy and paste when I already have All of this Easy.

Speaker 1:

But it wasn't that easy because that release gonna have to pull Kerebosa something out of you to release to us. I had to be released myself. Yes.

Speaker 2:

Yes.

Speaker 1:

The leaking and the bleeding could not. It would not have the impact that this book was called to make. It could not have that impact why? Because the leaking and the bleeding on the pages would not have done anything. It Would have been a nice book.

Speaker 2:

Would have been a nice book. Yeah, it would have been a nice book. People would have bought it and said I supported her. Yeah, I supported her.

Speaker 1:

And we don't want that. We want to say it transformed you. It transformed you. Now I want to tell you that I look at Journal Entry 21. I know you don't have the book, but there's something that I'll say that I know you. You're going to run me.

Speaker 2:

This book is in my purse. This is my sample, first original that I read to give the publisher what my changes are.

Speaker 1:

It's right here, I'll take it, that's your baby, that's my baby, all right.

Speaker 1:

So listen, journal Entry 2021. I'm going to run down to the bottom. The boldest part of this journey was the fight within myself for my own life. No-transcript, I started making knobs, doing what feels right for me, obliterating time stealers, recognizing dim scenarios that's a powerful tool, y'all I'm telling you from that. If you buy the book. That's a free tool. That is at the back of this book, anyway. Recognizing dim scenarios, experiences that definitely and intentionally minimize my value, enjoying my life right now, being present for me.

Speaker 2:

Sum that up for us, cheryl Feed us, and so I had to see myself, attempt to see myself the way God sees me, you know, and God is able to fight in war through me and through each of us. We're just that powerful for him. So I've always believed this thing about when he says that he gave us the great commission to love each other. For some reason, I've always leaned in on that. That's why I'm usually able to see the good in someone that most people go. I cannot deal with that person Because what I'm able to do is identify that. They just showed up today with whatever happened yesterday, whatever happened to me 10 years ago, et cetera, and so I had to do the same thing for myself. So I had to dig deeper and know what was driving me really on a regular basis, when I realized that what had been driving me all this time is that I always want to feel safe, and so if I checked out boxes and I got those right, it made me feel strong and powerful. So stop checking off boxes, especially when I'm, when I'm divorced. My my marriage is my marriage is done, the job is done. I have been there for it. So I'm gone from there. I did early retirement from there. Now the only person that I have is me and God.

Speaker 2:

All right, let me start making knobs. What do I do? What does God say? That I'm here for God. Then God gave me through Isaiah 61. He gave me an entire. What do you want to call it? An entire self-narrative. That's what it is why I'm here, what I do and what I do for people.

Speaker 2:

Then I identify what I call now not purpose. I say purpose, but when you coach with me, I call it your superpower now, because it is the tool, it is the thing that helps you leap, it is the thing that helps you drive, get in the right room. It is the thing that helps you say no. Is it a thing that that that pushes you? Remember, colette, when we met and I said to you that you got to start asking people so you can't continue to let them. You wait for somebody because you have to go, so you got to go ahead and start looking for it.

Speaker 2:

It is their superpower is what makes you ask to be in the room you're supposed to be in, even when you haven't been asked to be in the room. Yes, so all those knobs I'm making now, like I am I used to be um, because I never want to be, to act like I'm, more than other people believe it or not. Yes, everybody saw me out there, but I was always trying to make sure I was one of many, that everyone didn't feel that I was trying to be something like above them or that I shouldn't be. Now I am who I am. My superpower is personal development. You talk with me. If I talk to you, you're going to see yourself correctly every time and I've been doing that all my life.

Speaker 2:

I have girlfriends from elementary and high school that said yeah, you've actually been doing it all your life, you just thought differently.

Speaker 1:

Yes, yes, shirley, you just said something. Oh my gosh. So listen, when I read you, you wrote that the Lord gave you Isaiah 61. And I knew that was my calling nearly 30 years ago, and God reminded me that that calling is still on your life. I loved you even more and I said Lord, I knew there was a connection, there's something, and I'm sorry I didn't mark it. Oh my God, this last part it says but this last part it says healing isn't just about what leaves, it's about what takes root, and for me, peace has taken root. Shirley, I latched on to that. I want you to share.

Speaker 2:

I've never really had peace. My ability to you know, to be multi-talented and all the things I do are great, but because I was unhealed, I was doing it all in high functioning anxiety and depression, Because by myself I could barely get up. But if I have to be somewhere to coach, to talk, to speak, etc. You don't know what happened before I got out of that car. You don't know. And I think, as I'm saying this, God still blessed me because I did the work anyway. Yes, Because I did the work anyway, I'm able to do this work, write the book, talk about this book. And did you know that the whole seven years I was doing? What if she knew she was powerful when?

Speaker 2:

I began all the things I've done after I wrote this book and I really lean in on god and what he gave me in isaiah 61. This is the first time in my entire experience of empowering people and speaking that I don't I'm not so nervous that I get sweat. I, I'm, I'm, I'm sweating. I got to go to the bathroom. This is the first time, after I got this book out, not nervous, because I know 100% who God says I am and who I am.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I know that every time I open my mouth, I knew it beforehand, but there was so much that was still in me that had not been revealed, that I had to deal with. Yes, it was. It was literally fighting against each other. Yes, my purpose in my trauma experiences. Yes, my purpose in in in in joy that I didn't have my purpose and my high function anxiety. It was all fighting against each other. But think about that inside. Yeah, how literally I was literally fighting myself. Yes, think about that. And now I gotta get in front of people, talk about who they should be. Yes, for them.

Speaker 2:

And I did it because it's a part of who I am yes and I will be so exhausted yes one of my um, what if she knew she looks powerful? I, we got in the hotel room, we're gonna change and get something to eat. I thought I would just lay down for like five minutes and then go. I woke up three o'clock in the morning and, colette, you know that my conference would end at five o'clock somewhere in there. I woke up at two o'clock in the morning because I was fighting myself all day while I was doing this.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so we can show, with all the trauma we'll do because God has gifted and empowered us to do. But once we're released from that, we're a force to be reckoned with because we have God.

Speaker 2:

That level after that, that level after that is a entire you have never experienced. To literally engage in who you are fully yes, fully yes. The water is flowing through you. It's fully flowing. Yes, you're giving the water while god is giving you back water. That's true fulfillment.

Speaker 1:

I'm never gonna be empty and I think I told you a long time ago that's how I think about leaving this world empty.

Speaker 2:

I can't leave empty. Yes, if I give god foods, yes, yeah, I can't be empty.

Speaker 1:

It's going to be empty oh my gosh, that is so powerful that as we do the work, allow the holy spirit to do the work of restoration within us, he takes us on a whole different level because, yeah, we are okay to function here, because that's a gift he has placed within us that we can function at this level. But if we want to function on the level that he truly has called us to do, there are some work that that we have to know, that we have to do. But if we don't take the time to lean in to see what the holy spirit is saying, that we'll always be functioning down here and, honestly, there's a little impact down there. But a greater impact up here is when we're leaning and we allow him to do the work. And that's what Shirley has done. And that's also, if you've ever been to any of our conferences and I think she may have them up on on YouTube, not sure they're all up on YouTube go to her channel and I leave her her information in the description below and go and watch some of those replays. So we're encouraging you to read the book, but also encouraging you to watch the replay, because you're going to get substance from it.

Speaker 1:

I can tell you that and I'm not just telling you that because she's my sister I get benefit out of watching, out of leaning in and out of listening, and that's what we hope that you will get out of it. And so, shirley, as we close this up, I want to look at something that you will get out of it. And so, surely, as we close this up, I want to look at something that you says Okay, chapter four, free yourself. Passion versus purpose Purpose is what you H-A-V-E and you have that is in capital letter you have to do. It's not always easy and you may even feel like you're not skilled at it. Purpose brings focus. It's the why behind what you do for yourself and for others. You're not just going through the motions, you're contributing. Feed us.

Speaker 2:

Ooh, that's what real purpose is. Passion is how you feel when you do it, which is why you have to know exactly exactly why you're here. When I say what my superpower is, I know exactly what that is. While I'm here, that means I can do it for everybody. Yes, it fills me up as well. You know, when I am delivering, whether I'm writing something, whether it's a blog, I'm just talking. I'm doing some kind of live on social media. I'm feeding too, Because all of that is not something that I knew I was going to say.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

But I'm in my zone, because I'm in my purpose, so much that the Holy Spirit begins to feed me. That's what I mean when I began to experience it that way and not being like I cannot believe, like it's totally a different experience to deliver and not be tired every time. Amen. It's a different experience to not be tired every time. Yeah, I time. Yeah, I need. I do know I need to recover, but I'm still recovering in like this awe.

Speaker 2:

God, I can't believe you did that. I didn't even know I could do that. That's beating me. Yes, I know I have the capacity to do that. I just have to, right quick, say this there are experiences that we have had. That's why doing the work is so important. You can't get to her without doing the work. You're healed, empowered and restored.

Speaker 2:

It's that restoration part that's hard. See, we stop at being healed and then in power. Yes, I'll be quite honest with you. Often a lot of people don't get to restoration because you got to do the hard work. There are some things that our body protects us from, because that's how god made our body. Yes, and one of the biggest, one of the biggest breakthroughs I had is recognizing my an eight-year-old, an eight-year-old experience, because most of the biggest breakthroughs I had is recognizing my eight-year-old experience, because most of the things that we experienced until the age of nine, those things would stick with us, and so that was in me, but I didn't know what was in me. So when I discovered it was in me several years ago. Discovery doesn't mean that I was able to work through it. So when I had, you know, this session with God, you know everybody doesn't need a Christian psychologist.

Speaker 2:

Because, of how deep I think and how my spirit aligns with God. I needed that because of how deep I am, so to find out, really to define what that experience gave me all my life, what was driving me all my life. That that is the thing. That that cord was cut, that door was closed. God took the knob off of it. You can't even, can't even see the door anymore. Yes, that's why, healing and empowered, you got to get to restoration. That restorative state is doing things with a whole new way of seeing it, through God's heart. Yes, that's what restoration is.

Speaker 1:

Thank you, shirley, for sharing that. As you said, we sometimes only get through the healing and power, but we don't reach the restoration stage. And my hope is that, after listening, after watching, that that's the stage that we will all want to be at. And I'm going to ask you to do something in five minutes to speak to the woman and to pray for her. But I am going to tell you these poems. I did not know you could write poems. I think you should consider that as a book as well.

Speaker 2:

I did not know either. There are some parts of the journal Like again, the Holy Spirit wrote this. Start with this, now that you're in the middle of the book. You know, um, um, write a poem about this, now that you're at the end. What you know? What do you want them to see, to hear, to just to read in a poem? You know I can write a poem. I can write. Well, you know I write a poem, though.

Speaker 1:

Yeah so I want to read this poem as I hand over to you, as I thrive In a world once, loud I stood so bold, but hollow echoes torn my heart. Cold Survival felt like a tiresome race. Yet here I am in a holy space, evicted from the shudders of fight. I found my floating in the soft light, with the grace of God wrapped around my soul. Meaningful connections made me whole. Emotions flow like rivers. Now, clear Self-awareness whispers. You are here. Clear Self-awareness whispers. You are here.

Speaker 1:

Regulated storms are now calm within me. Tranquil waters show who I can be Thriving on purpose. I claim my right to dance in the joy of this newfound light. Boldness morphed into serene trust In healing embrace. I rise and adjust. I'm leaving the rest of the poem for you to, when you buy your book, to finish reading it. Shirley, I want to thank you for joining us today on Positioned for Purpose Conversations with Colette Marie. I thank you that you allowed the Holy Spirit to do the work within you so that you could produce the masterpiece that this book is, bold and thriving, seeking fulfillment beyond success. It's a must read, and so I'm handing it over to you now and I'm asking you, within five minutes, to speak to one woman to tell her something from this book, and I believe the Holy Spirit will lead you to where to share something from this book for her, your desire for her, and then pray for her.

Speaker 2:

Okay, I want to share something from this poem as I Thrive when it says Thank you Jesus. When it says, thank you Jesus, self-awareness whispers. You are here, regulated. Storms are now calm within me. My love, the woman, is listening to it. You have storms that you have learned how to regulate on the inside of you, but a storm is still a storm, no matter how big, medium, small it is. A storm is still a storm. You know that there's more. You know that there is something else. You look at all your awards, you look at all the accomplishments and you hear what people say about you and they see you're smiling, they see you showing up, but some of them see that you are exhausted.

Speaker 2:

Not everybody believes that you don't have the storms, that you don't have the storms. I pray that you attract somewhere and someone that can help you get your storms totally removed, whatever the weather inside you needs to be like, so that your storms dissipate. You know what they feel like. No one knows what they feel like, but you, I knew what my storms felt like All the time nervous, all the time, waiting for something Good, bad or whatever. I'm just waiting all the time. God wants you to rest in him. He wants you to rest in him when you're asleep, physically. He wants you to rest in him when you're up all day long. He wants you to rest in him when you're walking and living in your purpose. He wants you to rest in him because when you rest in him then he literally has you wrapped within him. So you have no choice but to be strengthened as you love, strengthened as you give.

Speaker 2:

My prayer is that you ask God for the ultimate salve that's going to heal your spirit and is going to heal your soul. You know how to heal physically, and even some of you you're trying to heal physically and it's not quite happening. I know what that means. When you read my book, you'll find out. None of my healing was working until I rested 100% in God and he gave me the sound that I needed. So, from the inside out, restored, I'm restored into the child that God wants me to be. I need you to restore into the child that God wants you to be. Be childlike for God. Amen. I pray that you receive this. And this book was written by the Holy Spirit. Don't just get it because I wrote it, but get it because this book was written by the Holy Spirit, you're going to get something that I didn't even get right in this book. Yes, be restored, be restored.

Speaker 1:

Awesome when you kept saying it's written by the Holy Spirit. I can so understand that, because I had that same process as well, and I remember when I took the book up and I started, I started the night the same day. I got it. No, the following day. I got it Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning I picked it up and I said let me just read a little.

Speaker 1:

The introduction grabbed me immediately and I forgot that I was getting ready to go to church. You texted me that, yeah, I put the book right down quick and I said, no, I have to go to church. You texted me that yeah, I had to. I put the book right down quick and I said, no, I have to go to church. So I read up to the introduction and the first chapter, but I read off the book. The following day I took it up and I said, okay, I'm going to read. So I love reading.

Speaker 1:

But as much as I love reading, I would not be reading off a book in a day, to be honest, would not be reading off a book in a day, to be honest. And so I started reading and I said, all right, I'm gonna leave a few chapters until later. And I found out that I finished reading it. And so what came back to me as I was just looking through it again and I said I have to read this book there and next time a little bit slower. Yes, I got a whole thing um it, but I also want to know that, at the end of the day, something else, something more, that the Lord allowed you to set it up in such a way that it gives us hope, it causes us to see ourselves, and then these poems just draw us in. So if you're at a place where you're feeling really hard chapter, there's a poem that comes to help to soothe you. The Holy Spirit really sits on this thing, I'm telling you you, the Holy Spirit really sits on this thing.

Speaker 2:

I'm telling you he's really on it. I just first time I describe it. You're reading it it's kind of hard and a poem comes and it's yes and it's I heard that? Yeah, I heard that. You know, when you say that you've done it, read it a few times. Everyone says the same thing that this is my third time one, this is my fourth money. God said I, and I keep forgetting to say this. God told me I was writing a forever book. Yeah, it's for every season.
