The year was 1945, and amid the bustling naval activity along the eastern coast of Florida, five Avenger torpedo bombers, known collectively as Flight 19, took off on a routine training mission. The pilots, led by Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor, were tasked with completing a navigation and bombing exercise known as "Navigation Problem No. 1." They were to fly east to practice a bombing run and head back to the airfield. The entire mission should have lasted just over two hours. But Flight 19 never returned.
