The Toastmaster's Experience

EP 30 - Musings with Matt: The Impact of Toastmasters on Life and Career

Evelyn Calaunan

In today’s podcast, I interview, Matt, an experienced Toastmaster, currently living in Iowa. He joined Toastmasters in December 2003 to improve his presentation skills.

Matt belongs to two clubs: Shibboleth, focusing on leadership and communication, and Positive Achievers, an advanced club for professional speakers. He explains the biblical origin of "Shibboleth," emphasizing its connection to overcoming barriers.

Throughout his membership, Matt has gained lifelong friends and professional opportunities. Notably, he led training for 300 colleagues during an ERP system implementation due to his communication expertise. He also collaborates with employee resource groups to drive initiatives at work.

Matt discusses evolving communication, noting that Toastmasters has enhanced his ability to connect with others and deliver messages with clarity. Despite technological changes, he emphasizes that many people still struggle with effective communication and sees opportunities to improve through programs like Toastmasters and Stagetime University.

A key accomplishment for Matt is achieving his Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) designation and winning a district-level speech contest after years of competing. He values the leadership and communication growth Toastmasters offers and stresses its affordability and effectiveness.

Matt encourages potential members to explore multiple clubs to find a good fit. He advises giving Toastmasters a chance to develop essential communication and leadership skills, sharing how his own commitment to a video challenge inspired personal growth and connection with others.
