EP - 33 Greg North: The Hat-Swapping, Rhyme-Slinging Bush Poet

Evelyn Calaunan

Greg North, a seasoned Toastmaster and award-winning bush poet, shares his journey through public speaking and poetry in this engaging interview. His Toastmasters adventure began in the 1990s in Parramatta, inspired by a desire for personal growth. After a hiatus due to work commitments, he joined Springwood Toastmasters, where he has been a member for over 22 years. He attributes his long-standing commitment to the club to the inspiring stories shared by members and the personal growth he has witnessed in others.

Greg’s passion for poetry was sparked at a café poetry night, leading him to write and perform his own works. Over the past 20 years, he has become a three-time Australian champion in bush poetry, performing both original and classic pieces. His professional career includes a four-month annual residency in Winton, where he performs daily, embracing the town’s deep connection to Banjo Patterson’s Waltzing Matilda.

He emphasizes the importance of connecting with audiences, a skill honed through Toastmasters. Greg encourages anyone considering Toastmasters to join, highlighting its impact on public speaking and leadership. His humorous and insightful poetry performances reflect his dedication to storytelling and entertainment.
