THINNING OF THE VEIL
Thinning of the Veil is a podcast by Tia Smith about how heaven communicates with us — personal revelation, dreams and visions, the ministering of angels, temple worship, and connection with loved ones on the other side of the veil. Each episode explores the doctrines, patterns, and real experiences of the thinning of the veil that comes as we engage in the gathering of Israel, so the heavens can be opened to you in greater degrees. New episodes every Tuesday.

"WHY HASN'T MY WORK BEEN DONE?" — Real Stories of Ancestors Reaching Through the Veil

Can our departed loved ones really reach through the veil? In this episode, I share two remarkable listener letters that testify our ancestors are closer than we think.
Elaine Peterson tells the story of her daughter Charity, diagnosed with ALS at just 14 years old — and the sacred experiences that followed her passing, as Elaine's 3-year-old son Josh described seeing angels surrounding his sister, visits from grandma and grandpa, Charity "in her celestial splendor," and even the Savior in their own home. Elaine also shares a dream in which she was taught why temple work for our ancestors matters so urgently in these last days — so they can join the legions of angels who come with the Savior at His Second Coming.
Then Brent Edwards shares how a name — Zebedee Clark — ran through his mind for months before he searched it on FamilySearch and discovered a cousin whose temple work had never been done. And the unforgettable moment he heard his grandfather's voice ask, "Why hasn't my work been done yet?"
These testimonies witness that the veil grows thin when we engage in the gathering of Israel through family history and temple work.

This was a touching, touching testimony of a mother in dire circumstances with so much stress going on in her life, having lost so many loved ones, being able to have a child that could see. Her son Josh, when he was younger, clearly had a gift of seeing those on the other side of the bell. And that isn't abnormal. Many young children tend to have that gift and express that they are having experiences to their parents. And may we be really understanding of that as we see accounts in the scriptures, especially in 3rd Nephi, about little children having visionary, revelatory experiences from the heavens. There are actually two viewers sent in their particular experiences, which I'm grateful for, because it adds to the testimony that these things can happen to anyone who chooses to be a gatherer. I think a lot of times people put these experiences off as those are just for certain people, those are just for prophets. But when we do that, we put God in a box and say, God is a respecter of persons. I can only have certain gifts. The reality is we all can be experiencing these things. Yes, we may have these experiences in different ways. We may feel, see, hear, and oftentimes experience them in different ways than other people, but they happen nonetheless if you are a gatherer. I know I've had a lot of people come up to me and say, well, that's just cool for you. That's cool that it's your gift, but that's not mine. Hopefully, as over the past couple of years, and we've included all of these testimonies and stories and doctrines about the reality that the thinning of the veil, the parting of the veil, revelatory experiences can be for you in your own individual lives. So again, we're going to hear from a couple of viewers. So if you have a story that you would love to share with me, and even if you don't want me to share it on air, it helps to strengthen my own testimony as I walk through this kind of single-handedly some days. It feels like I'm alone in a lot of this, these conversations just because I'm the front-facing face and voice of it. But it helps to have testimonies sent to me from viewers who have had similar experiences. Because, you know, I know of my experiences, but when we when I hear of more, that certainly strengthens me, especially in keeping to give a voice to this kind of work and testimony. So thanks for joining me. Now I wanted to share some really cool happenings that are happening. That's a lot of happenings. Um, but it's going to be something that generally doesn't happen or come to our area this particular activity. I don't know if you remember a while ago, I had a dear friend Afiona come on. She is from Samoa, and her and her sisters put on an exhibit. Generally, it's located in the islands because this is a connecting genealogical scroll exhibit of the islands of the Pacific Island people. And generally they're in the different islands, whether it's uh Samoa, Tonga, Hawaii. So we have the special opportunity here, relatively close to those who live in Utah and Nevada, that there's going to be three exhibits coming up at the end of July. And I'm super excited for this. I've I've seen this coming together, and it's going to be a cool opportunity. Even if you're not of Pacific Island descent, this is something that you'll want to go check out, I promise. And the cool thing is that it's free admission. And I'm going to leave all of the details in the description, but let me kind of tell you a little bit about where they're going to be so you can start putting that on your calendar. So the first one is going to be in Las Vegas, and it's going to be on July 22nd at the Ahern Hotel. So they're going to set up there and have the exhibit on the 22nd. And then that following a couple of days later, on July 25th and 26th, at the Dixie Convention Center, they're going to have a two-day uh really participation. There's a lot of people, different people that are participating in the event. They're going to also have a special fireside on the 26th. So you're not going to want to miss that. And then also at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center on July 28th and 29th, they will have a two-day event as well, and possibly another fireside on the 29th, I think, or 28th. Anyways, so I will leave all of those details in the description of the video. I'm hoping to attend. We're just going to have to see what how things are going with my knee after surgery. I'm I really, really want to go to actually the one at the Dixie Center. So I may be able to, I may be going there and I'll keep you all updated. So maybe you can meet me there. But it's just a cool opportunity to go see something that you generally probably won't see for a very long time or have the opportunity to see. And it's it's really miraculous how it's all come together. So I encourage you all to go see that. Now let's get into these cool stories sent in by uh my dear friends. Again, if you have one, email me, Tia at theneenofthevel.com. Now, the first set of experiences that I wanted to share is from a dear friend Elaine Peterson. She will reference her daughter Charity in this particular set of experiences and also her son, and you will realize fairly quickly why these were such tender mercies for her. Um, remember that these are sacred experiences of friends who have sent in to testify of these things, and I hope that you will treat every experience that is read with the dignity that it deserves. I know that some people like to pile on comments, but I'm hoping that you will see from a mother's perspective how important this was to her. And I'm grateful that she was willing to share them with us. And I'm going to read it just as she sent it to me. Dear Tia, I was aroused from sleep this morning by a male voice. Then I was communicated to by the spirit that it was time to write up these experiences for you. Someone out there needs to hear these, and apparently it's important to share them now. Charity was only 14 years old when she started manifesting symptoms of the awful and debilitating disease of ALS. Now, a side note, I had a friend, a dear friend named Joan Lancaster, who also had ALS, and thankfully her family allowed me and gave me the opportunity to be around her in those last few months of her life. We bonded so very quickly and on so many different parts of sacred suffering. And I am grateful to her for her example and welcome the time that I'll be able to see her again free from that disease. But it is debilitating not only for the patient, but the family as well. And I love the Lancaster family. So I this story really, really touched my heart. She writes, Charity was only 14 years old when she started manifesting symptoms of the awful and debilitating disease of ALS. Her age made her case entirely unpredictable, and she transformed at a dizzying pace. Within nine months of her diagnosis, she went from walking funny to wearing leg braces to using a walker, to sitting in a wheelchair, then finally to being a paraplegic who had to be fed and showered and turned in her bed several times a night. This heartbreaking process took place while the bud of young womanhood should have been blossoming rather than withering away. Try to imagine for a moment the impact this fatal illness had on charity and the lives of all those who loved her and took care of her, especially on me and her two sisters just younger than she. I was pregnant with my youngest of seven children at the time and couldn't lift or do the strenuous tasks required of a caregiver. Charity's illness wasn't the only thing we were dealing with. My mother was ill, had a heart aneurysm, and then passed away. Also, my oldest son received his mission call and left for New Jersey. There were a lot of goodbyes being said. It was the complete roller coaster of emotions. The things we experienced were both heartrending and incredibly spiritual. Over the years I've had to cling to my faith that a loving Father in heaven has a plan for all his children, both living and dead. Ironically, it is often through severe trials that we finally come to recognize God's great love for us. We discovered the countless gifts and blessings we enjoy on a daily basis. Some of them were eye-opening and astounding in their simplicity. Terry made the astonishing declaration that the months she was sick were the best of her entire life because she came to realize just how much she was loved by her family and friends and by her Heavenly Father. She testified frequently about the power of prayer in her life. My hope is that through sharing these experiences, Charity can keep on giving for as long as her memory lives on. Here are some of the thinning of the veil experiences we had after Charity's death because the veil was still very thin for our three to four-year-old son Josh. This helped him, strengthened our entire family's faith in the plan of salvation, and helped us in our healing. The first one that she relates is not long after Charity died, Josh mentioned that angels were surrounding her and asked if we could see them. She wrote, I heard Josh talking to someone in his crib and heard him say, Bye, Grandpa. Josh also said that Grandma came and said goodbye to him. He and Grandma were close. Grandma always called Josh the most kissed and the most loved baby in the world because he was our first caboose baby, born nine years after our youngest daughter. Three months after Charity died, Josh came running into the kitchen. He was very animated and excited. He asked if we had seen Charity sitting on the stairs and if we had taken pictures. He said she was sitting on the stairs and had given him a big hug and a kiss. He said she talked to him and then said she wanted to go home, but that she would be back and walk up and down the stairs. This next experience illustrates how our homes can be temples. Just after Charity died, my youngest daughter, Vanessa, asked Josh if he could see Charity in our home, and he said no, but he could see Jesus. Vanessa asked him where he was, and he pointed to the corner of our dining room ceiling. Our family enjoyed a wonderful vacation to Newport Beach, California in October of 2002, the year after Charity's death. We were walking back to our resort from Crystal Cove State Park when Josh said, Charity is an angel now, isn't she? I said yes and asked if he could see her. He told me she was over by a certain tree. I asked if she was still there and he said no. She went up behind the cloud. Later I asked Josh what Charity looked like when he saw her. He described how he turned his head and saw her and that she was beautiful. She had on a humongous dress and everything on it shone like Christmas. He described the dress as shiny silver and her hair as shiny silver, but he emphasized that she didn't have any wings. He also said that she had on a beautiful crown and earrings in her ears. This description made me cry with gratitude. I had prayed for a beautiful picture or memory of her, because I always had her last dying moments flash through my mind, and of the mortician wheeling her out of our house on a gurney. I will still get those from time to time, but they are immediately followed by charity in her celestial splendor. What more could one ask for? Like the Savior, we agonize at his suffering and death, but that image is overshadowed by his resurrected and eternal splendor and glory. I had revealed to me through a priesthood blessing that little children do not have the veil completely closed to them, because our Father in heaven, in his infinite love and mercy, does not completely close it till they are ready. I testify that we are surrounded by our loved ones. They are the angels watching over us. They are concerned about us, help us, protect us, and pray for us. Here's the last experience I told you about the gathering of the gathers that you wanted me to share. My best friend's brother died in a car accident just as she was going to go on a mission many years ago. A couple of years later, he came to me in a dream and explained to me the importance and significance of doing temple work in these last days. He explained that our ancestors would not be able to participate in the great and marvelous events of the second coming if we did not do their temple work. If we want them to have the opportunity of joining the legions of angels that come down out of heaven with the Savior when he comes, then we need to do as much as we can to ensure that this happens. I know how badly I want to be there at the second coming of my Savior. It is the greatest desire of my heart, and I know that many of my ancestors must feel the same way. Thank you for being interested in my experiences. It has been a blessing for me to remember to share and to testify. Keep up all your hard work, Tia. I and your listeners love you and need you. Thanks for all you do, Elaine Peterson. This was a touching, touching testimony of a mother in dire circumstances with so much stress going on in her life, having lost so many loved ones, being able to have a child that could see. Her son Josh, when he was younger, clearly had a gift of seeing those on the other side of the bell, and that isn't abnormal. Many young children tend to have that gift and express that they are having experiences to their parents. And may we be really understanding of that as we see accounts in the scriptures, especially in Third Nephi, about little children having visionary, revelatory experiences from the heavens. Thank you, Elaine, for sharing that tender story with me and for your testimony about these sacred things. The next set of experiences I wanted to share are from Brent Edwards. We've talked on the phone, and I'm just super grateful for his willingness to share again his special spiritual manifestations that he has had. Now remember, these are sacred to him, and I hope that we can treat them as such, and I will read it as he sent it to me. He writes, I have had so many experiences where I know that Heavenly Father is aware of me and what I'm going through or wanted me to know of his plans for me. My first one when I was se was when I was seven years old. On the night that my grandpa Edwards passed away, he came to see me. I will never forget that I was having a Scooby-Doo dream where they were chasing after a ghost. I woke up to see someone standing outside my window all dressed in white. He didn't say anything, but just turned towards the backyard and vanished. I went immediately to my parents' room and said that someone was walking towards the backyard. My dad jumped up and grabbed his gun and ran to the backyard. He didn't see anyone. For the rest of the night I slept in my sister's bed. The next morning my mom came in to tell us that grandpa had passed away during the night. My sisters started crying, but I received confirmation that he was in a better place and no longer in pain. Up until I received my patriarchal blessing and mission call, I really hadn't received many more spiritual manifestations, but I seemed to also have had a sense when something was about to happen. When I received my patriarchal blessing, I was told that I would be the savior on Mount Zion to my departed loved ones, and that they would whisper to my spirit from the dust. I was also given the spirit of prophecy and revelation. I was admonished to seek after revelation, which I have throughout my lifetime ever since. My first experience that showed me that the Machedic priesthood is real and true was when I was just a few months on my mission. I was asked to give a special blessing to the mother of the branch president in my second area. I had always heard from my dad about blessings of sealing people unto death, but I never thought that I would be required to do so. I was giving her the blessing and was told that I was supposed to assign her unto death with just comfort as she passes from this life to the next. Being a 19-year-old who had only been given the Milchazetic priesthood a few months before, I wasn't really prepared to declare such a profound blessing upon someone. I even argued with the spirit about the veracity of the words that were coming to me. I told her that she would be healed, but then she passed away the next morning. That taught me to say that whatever came to my mind during a blessing. Another experience was with my oldest son. He was born with something wrong with his stomach. He had a hard time holding down his food from birth. He would violently throw up a lot. We tried switching formulas and other things. He was underweight and small for his age. After one night of violent vomiting, I was frustrated. His mother, we're no longer together, reminded me that I have the priesthood and could heal him. So I gave him a blessing, and after that night he never threw up again. He started gaining weight and growing. When it comes to temple work and performing the work from my ancestors, I really didn't get much of a start until my dad passed away and I married my third wife, which is why I believe that most of the teaching on the other side of the veil is reserved for us to perform our ancestors. There is a unique story behind knowing that my dad was going to die and go serve a mission on the other side of the veil. It was in August of 2008. I had a dream one day that my dad was in the chapel of the first church building where I grew up in, until we moved when I was eight. There was a curtain, much like the one in the temple where we go to receive the new name. He was going behind the curtain to receive a blessing and preparation to start his mission on the other side of the ville. He told me that he was getting ready to go serve a mission there. Six months later, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He elected to have it cut out instead of radiation therapy. During the operation, they lost him twice. That caused brain damage and he passed away in November of 2010. Up until then, all the information we had on ancestors was pretty much just four generations. After my dad passed away, the information came flooding in. I have now completed back to about 12 generations away. One night I had a dream with my fifth great grandfather on my mom's side. His name is Christian Benner. He was scolding me for not doing enough work on that side of the family. The dream opened up with me standing in an early American parlor. As he started to talk to me, his name was being written above the wainscoting. He was telling me that not enough was being done on that side of the family. I turned to see this fairly short, portly man with early 19th century clothing standing in the doorway. I told him that my wife and I have been working hard to get as much temple work done as possible. He said, but not enough is being done on our side of the family. I woke from that dream and opened up to find his name and that someone had reserved the name of one of his sons two years before, but never printed it. I wrote to the individual that had reserved the name and told him that if he would release the name, I could finish the work. He did release the name. Another experience that I had with someone wanting their work done was through another dream. In the dream, I woke up to get a drink of water. As I turned from the sink, I saw a little girl dressed in white standing in front of me. I asked her what her name was. She didn't say anything, but kept wanting to open the refrigerator. She swiped at it twice and then ran off. I woke from that dream with a notification from From from Family Search that I had not done indexing for 90 days. So I was up at three in the morning doing indexing. I figured that someone was starving to have their work done. The rest of my experiences with temple work have been pretty much just being able to find names fairly quickly or profound feelings of joy in the temple after their work has been done. One that really sticks out was my fourth great-grandparents, John and Lucy Edwards. He was a Revolutionary War veteran, married three times. His third wife was 35 years younger than him. She was my fourth great-grandmother. After performing their sealing, I heard the words, Well done, my good and faithful son. I soon realized that that was him. I also had a very strong feeling he wanted so badly to kiss his wife, but he couldn't really do it, since they are just spirits now. I've received many witnesses about how much he adores his wife. Since then, I have received more and more personal revelations, some of which are of extreme personal nature that I am not able to disclose at this time. But I can testify that when we offend the Lord through doubting revelations or personal prophecies that may not have been fulfilled yet, the spirit is very offended, and that is a chastisement that no one wants to experience. I have received so many witnesses throughout my lifetime of the truthfulness of this work and that personal revelation is true. I've received some whisperings of the Spirit where I have heard the Spirit ask me, dost thou not trust me? Followed by a very comforting feeling. I hope that this helps you with your work. I look forward to talking to you more. Sorry that this has taken a while to get back to you. The past couple of weeks have been very busy for me. Have a great day, and may the Lord bless you in your work. Sincerely, Rent Edwards. And then he sent me a follow-up email. He said, I just had another thinning of the Vell experience. For several months, I've had a name running through my mind, not knowing why. The name was Zebedee Clark. For the longest time, I didn't know how the name was associated to me. After listening to the podcast about the 12-year-old boy that had a name in his head and didn't know why, only to find out that it was a relative, I decided to do the same thing with that name. Tonight I went to familysearch.org and typed in the name. It was the third name that I clicked onto. It was my seventh cousin once removed on my mom's side. Neither him, his wife, nor daughter have had their temple work done. I immediately put in the request to do their work. I also forgot to tell you of the experience with my maternal grandfather. It was exactly a year to his death. I was walking through the house and I was reminded of that. Then I heard a voice in my head asking, Why hasn't my work been done yet? My parents went to the temple just a few days later. Afterwards he appeared to me in a dream, thanking me for the gospel, and that he is able to partake of now. Yes, the veil is very thin. I'm grateful to be a part of this great work. Our ancestors are closer than we think. Brent Edwards. I hope that both of these stories have provided insight into how these experiences can happen to you. Remember, God is not a respecter of persons. Please do not put his ability to give you revelation in a box and reserve that for very few people. Like Brent and Elaine, you can also have an opening of heavens, especially as you're gathering Israel. Yes, some are prone to it more. That is a gift that they've been given either through pronouncement on a patriarchal blessing or other spiritual gifts. But we can individually pray for these separate gifts if we use them for the reason why they were given. And that is to save Israel, all of God's children. Thanks for joining me. And please think about going to the voices of the ancestors. You will find it so very interesting and uplifting. And maybe we might run into each other. We'll have to see about that. Again, that information is in the description of this video. Please look it up. If you have any questions about that, email me and I can send you more information. Have a great weekend, my friends. Bye.
