You can be scared and still be called. That’s the heart of the Gideon story, and it’s why this Fear Not Friday lands so close to home for anyone who feels outnumbered, underqualified, or tempted to hide. We start with the words God speaks over a trembling man in Judges 6: “Peace. Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.” If your week has been heavy and your courage feels thin, that verse is a lifeline.

We trace Gideon’s world in the book of Judges, after Moses and Joshua, when Israel drifts and the Midianites become a crushing threat. Even Gideon’s own household reflects the compromise, with an altar to Baal standing where it never should. From caves and insecurity to a hard call to tear down idols, Gideon’s journey shows what obedience looks like when you don’t feel brave yet. We talk leadership, fear, faith, and the way God often chooses the least likely person so the outcome points to Him, not our strength or our numbers.

Then we get to the battle plan that makes no sense until it does: God cuts the army from 32,000 to 300 and sends them out with a trumpet, a clay pot, and a torch. In the darkness of the second watch, God turns Gideon’s fear into courage and turns the enemy’s confidence into panic.

If you’re facing a problem that feels bigger than you, this is your reminder that peace can be spoken into the middle of it. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs courage, and leave a review telling us: where do you need “fear not” right now?

Welcome To Fear Not Friday

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to Fear Not Friday, where at the end of the week we meet together to encourage one another to be bold, to be strong, and to fear not.

Gideon The Afraid Leader

SPEAKER_00

And today is about a man named Gideon. I need to tell you, I called him Super Chicken. Super chicken. He was always afraid, always hiding. It's from the book of Judges, chapters six through eight. Today's Fear Not Friday is some Judges chapter six, verse 23, where the Lord says to Gideon, peace. Do not be afraid, you are not going to die. Again, Judges 6.23, God speaks to Gideon, Peace, do not be afraid, you are not going

to die. Now for context, I need to tell you that Moses had long since died. Joshua had passed away, and this is the time of Judges before they had kings in Israel, but they're looking for a leader. But what happened is what God said not to do. They went to the promised land, and there's this group of people called the Midianites, and they started adopting their customs. I guess the ways of the world, going their ways, they abandoned God to the point where even the father of Gideon built an altar to the God Baal, B-A-A-L. That was just unheard of. You don't do that.

Called While Hiding In Fear

SPEAKER_00

But when the angel of the Lord found Gideon and said, You will be a great leader, Gideon was in fear. He was scared. He was actually hiding in some of the caves in the mountains, hiding from the Midianites. He was so much fear. And the angel of the Lord had to say, Peace. Like, stop being scared. Do not be afraid. You will not die. And when he told him that God had chosen you, you will be a great leader. And Gideon basically said, Are you kidding me? I come from the least or the weakest family of all Israel. And I'm probably the least or weakest of that family. Think what he said. I came from the least family of all Israel, and I'm probably the least man of that family. But that is what God does. Sometimes he takes the least and makes them into a leader.

Tearing Down Baal At Night

SPEAKER_00

But there had to be some tests. Gideon, you need to go and tear down the altar that your father built to Baal. Gideon, being the brave man, he went and tore down the altar just as he was commanded. But he did it at nighttime, so nobody would see him. Yeah, super chicken. Again, the guy who was hiding in the mountains and the caves from the enemy. But that was Gideon, and that was the one God chose to be a great

Shrinking The Army To 300

leader. The problem was the Midianite army was 135,000 people. It says in chapter 8 of Judges, I believe 120,000 were swordsmen, men with swords, but 135,000 people, Gideon built an army of 32,000 men of Israel. And God said, That is too big, because when you win this battle, you will say you did it and not give the glory to God. And God said, Ask your men who is afraid, who is scared of losing their life, and let them go home. And guess what? Out of 32,000, 22,000 got up and left and went home, leaving Gideon with 10,000 men. And God said, Gideon, that's still too many. Because when you win, you'll give glory to yourself and fail to give glory to God. Well, give them a test. And that test, only 300 men of the original 32,000 passed that test. 300 men to fight an army of 135,000. Gideon was to take those 300 soldiers who passed the test and divide them into three companies of 100 each. And the weapons they were given, are you ready for this? The weapons were a trumpet, a clay pot, and a torch. That was the weapons. A trumpet, a clay pot, and a

torch. Now Gideon did a very wise thing. He went out and did some reconnaissance to check out the camp. And he came back and said, The camels, just the camels, are like grains of sand. There are so many camels for this army of 135,000. But as God commanded, he took his army of 300, again, three companies of 100 each, with a trumpet, a clay pot, and a torch. And they went to the camp at nighttime. They said it was a second watch. I believe the first watch was 9 p.m. to midnight. The second watch was midnight to three in the morning. And the third watch would be 3 in the morning to 6 a.m. And positioned themselves, a hundred men, on three different sites. And then after midnight, at the second watch, they began blowing the trumpets and yelling, God is with Gideon, God is with Gideon. Obviously, the enemy was in a deep sleep, and they woke up and they're hearing trumpets from the left, from the middle, from the right, and they don't know how many are out there. And then upon Gideon's command, they broke all those clay pots. They threw them down and broke them. And again, it's sometime between midnight and three in the morning. You're hearing all this, and you don't know where they're coming from. And then the next thing was they lit their torches. And the Bible says what happened, the army of the enemy, 135,000, became insane with fear. They were so full of fear. The Bible says they began killing each other. They saw these trumpets, they heard things breaking, then they saw the torches. And again, it was after midnight, it was pitch dark, and they began killing each other. They killed a hundred and twenty thousand of their own army that left fifteen thousand who ran away.

Fear Flips Onto The Enemy

SPEAKER_00

The genius of what God had done, he took the fear of Gideon, and if you will, he changed that and put a fear in the enemy. And three hundred men of Gideon were able to come together and put fear into an army of 135,000.

Prayer To Stand Bold Today

SPEAKER_00

So there you are, my friends. Have you ever been like me where you're saying, Lord, I do not have the numbers, I do not have the strength, but you don't want to be a Gideon full of fear, and then God says, peace, do not be afraid, you will not die. And that's what happened to Gideon. And if that is your prayer this Friday, if you feel so overwhelmed by the strength of the enemy, and you find yourself maybe like Gideon, you want to hide in the cave, no. That is my prayer for you. This fear not Friday. Don't be a Gideon, so scared. You're hiding in the cave somewhere. Sometimes you gotta be bold and strong. You gotta listen to the Lord when you have fear, and the Lord says, peace, do not be afraid, you're not gonna die. And if that is your need this Friday, then that is my prayer for you, and let's end together. Amen. Amen. Hallelujah. Amen.
