19 What Jesus Means by "Blessed Are Those Who Hunger" (Matthew 5:6)
Jun 23, 2021 Season 18 Episode 19
Krisan Marotta

In this episode, we examine one of the most misunderstood beatitudes: "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." Jesus is not talking about physical poverty or general spiritual desire. He's describing people who recognize their moral bankruptcy and desperately long for the holiness only God can provide. This hunger is not a weakness but the defining mark of saving faith, and it points to a future hope when God will finally make his people holy in his kingdom.

In this week's episode, we explore:

  • Why Luke's version helps us understand Matthew's meaning by showing that spiritual hunger, not physical poverty, is the focus
  • The three different meanings of "righteousness" in Scripture and why understanding them prevents confusion about justification, faith, and holiness
  • How hunger and thirst function as metaphors in the Bible, emphasizing powerful desire for something we lack
  • The connection between the first four beatitudes and how they together describe the core convictions of saving faith
  • Why being "satisfied now" is actually a warning sign rather than a blessing
  • What saving faith is NOT, including common misconceptions about obedience, intellectual assent, and blind belief
  • The difference between wanting an easy life and hungering for holiness, and why only the latter defines genuine faith

After listening to this episode, you will understand why Jesus calls spiritually hungry people blessed and fortunate. You'll be able to distinguish between trusting God for daily comfort and trusting him for the holiness you truly need. Most importantly, you'll see how this beatitude invites you to examine your own heart: Are you longing for what only God's kingdom can provide, or are you satisfied with what this world offers? This episode will help you recognize that hungering for righteousness is not about being dissatisfied with life but about understanding what you were made to desire most.
