76 | Innocent Confidence

Sometimes the most profound theology comes from the lips of a child. 

While celebrating the Fourth of July in Panama City Beach, Richard was carrying his grandson, Bennett, into the surf when Bennett looked up and said something that stopped him in his tracks:

"Papi... you're like God."

Surprised, Richard asked him why. 

His answer was as simple as it was profound:

"Because you protect me from the waves. You hold me up high, and the waves are down there." 

In that moment, Bennett wasn't making a theological argument. He was simply expressing the unshakable confidence of a child who knew he was safe in the arms of someone he trusted. 

What if that's exactly how God invites us to live?

And he says, Hey man, Rhonda says that uh y'all are gonna go down to BCB for your honeymoon. And I said, She's you're exactly right. We're we're doing that. And he said, Well, that's great. That'll be your first time staying at the trailer. And I said, Well, buddy, I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm staying at the beach house. And he busts out laughing and he goes, It's your trailer.

Happy Thursday, folks! You guys, I hope you're having a better Thursday than the U.S. men's national team is. Oh, goodness. We crashed out of the World Cup. Last time we spoke, which was pre-Mike Gunter episode, we were still in it. And and we had high hopes, did we not? Had some hopes. I don't know if they were high. But they have come crashing down. Well, you mentioned Mike Gunter. Dude, what an awesome interview we have. He pronounces it Gunner. Gunner, Mike Gunner with Energy Savers of Columbus. How are you doing? You know, and and actually, you know, interestingly, when we were talking to her, she was like, She walked up, or we're talking to both of them, and she goes, Great ice cream flavor tonight. And I was like so excited. I'm like, well, talk to me. What is what is the flavor of the day?

She said mint and chocolate chip. Whoa, that was great. That was great. Yeah, we shouldn't do that. Just in case people are driving and they're audibly, you know, triggered by that.

Same, same, same. I don't know. And uh yeah, I you know what? I want my mint flavor with my mint. And I want my chocolate flavor with my chocolate. They should not be too mint is something that refreshes. Chocolate is something that is consumed. You know, yeah.

And in that moment, I was like, wait a second. What have I done? My culinary preferences are aligned with Richard. That can be good. Oh my god. I must be in the wrong, but no, I'm in the right as it relates to this. And so are you, sir. Well, thank you for affirming me. I believe we are. And this Sermon on the Side came from our 4th of July weekend trip to the beach, which you mocked me about in front of all of our Sermons on the Side listeners. Just because we go.

It's unbelievable. Okay, so 4th of July weekend.

And as you'll recall, that is uh that is my my stepdaughter Kendall Nipper's birthday.

That's right, as we talked about.

And so we all went down there with the with the kids, the grandkids, and we had a great time. All loaded into our little our little place there on the beach. And at this point, I think I need to tell the backstory about our little place down there at Panama City.

Okay, so Rhonda and I just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary in June. Insert round of applause. One decade of awesomeness. Uh and so 10 years, just got God is so good. Amen. And it reminded me of this story about the place that we go to stay at at Panama City Beach. Okay. Because when Rhonda and I started uh dating and and talking, you know, we I would hear these stories about them going down to their beach house in PCB. And I was I thought, that is awesome, that is great. And then I thought, hmm, thank you, God. You know, connecting in you never know. And and sure enough, I marry in, and we decide on for our little honeymoon, we're gonna go down there and stay at PCB for a while. Makes sense, right?

And you've never been there. You're never been there. Your honeymoon with Rhonda is the first time you're seeing this beach house. Exactly.

And she would just refer to beach house this, beach house that. And I'm I was excited. And so uh Rhonda's brother Jay, Jay Massey, I love Jay, awesome guy. And he and I are talking, you know, in the weeks leading up to the uh the wedding. And he says, Hey man, Rhonda says that uh y'all are gonna go down to PCB for your honeymoon. And I said, She's you're exactly right. We're we're doing that. And he said, Well, that's great. That'll be your first time staying at the trailer. And I said, Well, buddy, I don't know what you're talking about, but I'm staying at the beach house. And he busts out laughing and he goes, It's a trailer. It's this look, Rhonda's parents had the foresight just decades ago to buy a double-wide trailer, put it on a half acre lot a few blocks from the beach. And it has ended up being this really awesome place for the family to go. And that's where we go, and we stay all the time. That that's one of the reasons that we go down there all the time. We can on the fly just say, free weekend, we don't have anything going on on Saturday. Let's spend the weekend at BCB because we got a place there at free of charge, right? So, shout out to Glenda, my mother-in-law, who uh I mean, it she she helps us. We keep that place up. They built a porch on it, got a porch swing. It's just it's got hot water heater, air conditioner, and Wi-Fi. What do you need?

What do you need? It is walking distance to the beach. Exactly. Love it.

It's so good. So uh that is our uh that's that's where we go. And and so we we always love it. And so we went, we can just converged on the beach house, quote unquote. When we go down to the beach, when it's me and Rhonda, or me and Rhonda and Glenda, my mother-in-law, yeah, or we go down with friends, we're just we like to go to the beach itself. We put up an umbrella or two, and we get our little fold-in chairs, and we just sit with our toes in the sand, maybe in the in the shallow surf.

Heck yeah.

I'm not, dude, I'm not getting in the water that much. I'm just out there to just enjoy the sound of the surf, coming up, lapping up on the on the beach, and you know, just being out there, right? And trying not to get sunburnt. Amen. You feel me on that?

SPEAKER_02 11:44

I do. I've got two shades, burnt and not burnt.

So, so anyway, here's the deal. This time we're on on 4th of July weekend, the grandkids are there. Okay. So, you know what that changed about my time actually on the beach? Bro, I was all up in that ocean. Yes, you were. I was in the Gulf of what's it called now? You were in the Gulf. I was in the Gulf, baby, because I'm Poppy. You know what I'm saying? And when Bennett says, Poppy, will you carry me out into the water? The answer is yes.

The answer is how far are we going?

SPEAKER_00 12:22

So I I and and Blakely the same, the divine miss bee, man. She's got a boogie board. We had a we had a good time with that. But so Bennett and I, on one of my trips out there with him, I I have him and and we walk for a little bit, and you know, he's kind of like jumping the waves when they're when they're small. But when we get out a little farther, you know, and it's like knee deep for me, it's starting to get a little high on him. And so I pick him up. So he loved having me pick him up, and we kept going out to where it was around maybe almost shoulder depth for me, and I'm holding him, and we're just kind of jumping when uh when a sizable little wave. Hey, look, it's PCB, the waves aren't that big, right? So, anyway, we're having that uh just a high time, great time, and it's time to walk back in. So I see and and I just use the line that I always use. Ben, we I gotta take you in. Poppy's getting tired. So he get he hears that all the time, but anyway, walking back in and having a fun time uh holding him, and and as we get a uh where the uh water's a little shallower, I kind of stayed down. You know, I was actually kind of walking on my knees so that we could still have fun with the waves. And at one point, when the the actual depth was only about knee deep, I stand up. I'm holding him, and I stand up, and suddenly we're up here, you know, the water's down at my knees, and he's having a good time, and he's just happy and in a good mood. And he says something to me that uh he just said, Poppy, you know you're like God. And I said, What? We're gonna what did he just say? Uh we're gonna double-click on that. Yeah, so I start and say, What what meanest thou this? I mean, so I said, Why do you think what made you say Poppy is like God? And he says, Because you carry me and you keep me safe in the waves. And I said, Really? Is there anything else? And he said, Well, you you when you stand up, uh, we're way up here and the waves are way down there. And then we just I just walk him up the rest of the way to the beach, but I was just like, Can you feel me? That that was I felt like that was a moment where I was like, Whoa. And of course, it's all perspective, it's the little kid, right? But he's out there, what he considers to be super deep in the ocean, right? But he feels because I'm carrying him, he's he's all it's all good. He's not scared, and then later it just pops out of his mouth, you're like God. And then he explained, because because you carry me, you keep me safe in the waves, and when we're and and we're about way up here above the waves, and the waves are way down there. And I thought, dude, man, do you feel me on that? Because I'm like, I felt God was speaking to me in that moment, and just saying, that's what I do. That Bennett ain't wrong. It's almost like God's saying, He ain't wrong, he ain't lying.

That is exactly what I do, you know? And and that's that's exactly what Mike was talking about last week. He is our shield and great reward. I mean, I just for and but I'm just so blown away that Bennett has the the the wherewithal and the understanding at this age of what God means and and what God does and what God is for us. And oh man, how how incredible. Isn't that amazing?

Yeah, that's a good point that he kind of made that connection. And I, you know, I I got to thinking about that, and I thought, and and so I said, okay, Lord, so I go and you know, I'm journaling that that evening, writing it down and saying, Lord, let's let's you and me talk about that. And I and I wanted to dig around in the in the scriptures about okay, well, where where is some of that truth found in the Bible? And I, you know, I found Isaiah 46 verse 4 about that that God promises He will carry us. He will literally carry us. And I I love that promise because I can think back to certain scenarios in my life where I felt like I was, I was there was just no way I hadn't didn't have the strength to get keep one foot going in front of the other, you know, to keep to just try to keep grinding. And I I just know there are times that I was done and God just carried me. And I'm so thankful for those times. So I, you know, that was one of those touch points for in Bennett's little mind. And then I I thought about the obviously God taking taking care of us, you know, he he cares for us as our heavenly father, and he and and he he provides what we need and and makes us feel safe. And uh and then that then that part where he said where he was talking about he it was actually he felt so high far above the water when he told me you you're like God. And he said, because we're way up here and the water's way down there. And I thought about all the times that I've felt like life had me in over my head, and God is the one who calms those waves, or is more powerful than those waves. So, with that thought in mind about God being, you know, bigger and more powerful than the waves, Psalm 93, verses 3 and 4. Check this out. It says, The floods have risen up, O Lord. The floods roar like thunder, they lift their pounding waves, but mightier than the violent raging of the seas, mightier than the breakers of the shore, the Lord is mightier than these. Wow. Oh, thank you, Lord. He is over and above, and he is in charge of the waves of the sea.

Dude, I I mean I need to hear this right now. This story is ministering to me. And I need I need that reminder from Bennett that the Lord lifts us out of that the crashing waves and the circumstances of life and the question marks and the financial things and the stresses and this and that, and all of a sudden those problems get way down there, and we're way up there with the Father. You know, as you were describing the story, I immediately thought of Psalm 46:1.

Okay.

SPEAKER_02 19:46

He is our refuge and our strength, our very present help, even in trouble. And so when we find ourselves being tossed by the wind and the waves, all we need to do is to look to the Father. And he's gonna, oh man, oh, another little water reference here is Peter. Come on. What? Peter being tossed when he took his eyes off of Jesus, that's when he started sinking. But when we place our eyes, our hearts, our affection, our attention on Christ, all of a sudden that's when we're not leaning on our own understanding, but in all of our ways acknowledging him, then he will keep our path.

Man, that is so cool. And as you were talking, you know, it occurred to me that uh Bennett was not afraid of going out into the water, as long as either myself or his dad was carrying, yeah, teenop was carrying him out there, and I thought that's something I would like to learn from from Bennett, and that would be to look at the scenarios of my life as adventures, as something I'm doing with the Heavenly Father, and not, oh, I hope I don't have to go out there, not living in fear, you know what I'm saying? Uh scripture says that perfect love casts out all fear, and the perfect love of our father, our heavenly father, can help us to not live in fear. But I think about just when he looked out there, he didn't think I'm talking about Bennett, he didn't think, oh, I'm scared of those. He's like, let me go get my dad. Let me go get poppy and let's go do it. And I wonder, wouldn't it be cool if I could sort of face my day like that or face my my week, face a season of life that maybe I somewhere down deep I'm intimidated by, but just to say, I want to get with God and I want to go do this. Because he is carrying me.

And it's such it's such innocent confidence. It's it's I'm scared to death of that. But of course I'm not scared of it as long as I'm holding Poppy's hand. You know, like there's no shot he's getting in the waves. But of course he would if he's holding your hand. And I just think of my own circumstances. It's like, yeah, I've got some circumstances where I'm like Bennett and I'm scared to death.

But am I am I treating it in such a way that, oh, well, as long as Christ is with me, or rather, as long as I'm with Christ.

Then of course this will be, of course, he will see me through this. Of course he is my refuge and strength. Of course he is my shield and great reward. Of course he is what Psalms 96? Is that what it is? 91?

From all sides. 93, 3, and 4. He is mightier than all of this. All the things.

Of course he's mightier than this. And I don't know if I do. Or I don't, I don't know if I'm allowing myself. And and hey, listen, maybe you're listening and you're going, hey, I'm right there with you, Brad. I'm like Bennett. There's some situations I'm looking at that are scaring me half to death. But do I have that innocent confidence to say, hey, I'm with you, God? And and and as long as I'm with you, it's honestly making me think about your uh the sermon on the side where if our God is for us, who can be again against us? Oh, that's easy. Yeah, dude. Just a couple of drops, some sprinkles. Oh my god. And you know what? Yeah. I don't want to move past um the fact that you really demonstrated to Bennett what what being God was really like because you know you rested on the seventh. You said Poppy's tired. So you've got I'm sorry.

I didn't have to go there and ding you, bro. I didn't know if we were done being serious. You couldn't just give me this moment. You're really like God, Poppy.

So that we could, as a as a community of our listeners and all of us together, that we could just really say, okay, Lord, you know, maybe maybe we could ask ourselves that question.

Do I have that innocent confidence that Bennett displayed for us? And how I want that. I'm I'm like, now I'm as we're talking like this, I'm hungering for that. And I want that vibe to be my approach to my day and my week or my season of life or even a scenario, a situation that I'm facing. I'm like, okay, God, me and you. All right. We can I can do it as long as you're carrying me. Oh, thank you, Lord. Good stuff. So thank you to all our listeners for going there with us.

Uh Rhonda and I decided to go see a movie. And we went with our friends uh Scotty and Sandy Scott. Oh, yes. And we went to the the theater. Um, in fact, what do you how do you pronounce the word theater?

When I lived up in New York State, the people would literally, because they love to hear me and mock me for the things that, you know, the southern things I said. So they would come up and say, Hey, where do you go to see a movie? I said, The theater. And they'd go, that's so funny. You're such a hick.

The move the movie theater, movie theater. I I think I'm theater.

Yeah, yeah.

But I don't I don't think I've have a strong conviction.

But anyway, oh, you know what the other thing that the uh the New Yorkers would ask me? They'd say say water. What's the thing? Water. Water. They would say, what's the month between uh June and August? And I'd say July. July.

We need sound effects now. But so uh we did went to the theater and we saw of uh a wonderful film, and it was called uh it's called Young Washington. Have you heard about this movie? I haven't no all right, Angel Studios, which is that really good uh family, faith and family kind of studio. They're putting out a lot of good movies.

Have you ever had anybody been around a really old person that called the movie theater the picture show? The picture show? No, okay. Well, it just happened, yeah. All right, so anyway, we we go a couple of times a year probably to see a movie. Okay, and uh mostly though we just wait for something to come out, you know, we'll stream it when it comes when a movie comes available, but we do enjoy going to the theater. How long? I mean, how often do you get to go see a movie in the uh very rarely these days?

And the person that you just filled it up, they're like you back and it's comp I mean it's every kernel is missing. I mean, looking at you like butter didn't even get to the bottom of the bag. They're like, What? Oh man, I tripped and fell. I'll be gonna I just need some refill, you know. Oh, that's funny. But no, I'm a big oh, butter. I need butter. Oh no. See, that's gross. That's just gross.

They're carrying a blanket, and I and Scotty says, points that out to me, and I look and I see it, and I go, those are my people. Because they're always cold. I'm always cold. I'm telling you, those those people get me. I could be friends with those people. You know what I'm saying? Then we might be related somehow.
