Off The Hook
We are a group of private investigators, bounty hunters / fugitive recovery agents, and bail bondsmen that have been in this line of work for over twenty five years and have many stories to tell. We have traveled all over the country catching fugitives and bringing them back to have their day in court. With our years of experience we are trying to educate the public about bail and why it is a needed part of our judicial system.

Local Stabbing Makes National News & A Take Down In A Church Parking Lot
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Downtown Wilmington makes the news for all the wrong reasons, and we don’t pretend it’s normal. We talk candidly about festival weekend violence, why locals sometimes avoid downtown, and what people mean when they say bail reform and weak follow-through can turn into real danger on the street. If you care about Wilmington NC public safety, bail bonds, and how fast a city’s vibe can change, you’ll recognize the tension right away.
Then we zoom out to the stuff that hits everyone at the pump. Iran, oil, shipping choke points like the Strait of Hormuz, and the idea that U.S. energy exports can reshape who holds the leverage. We’re not claiming we’ve got secret intel. We’re working through the logic, the incentives, and why “gas prices” is really a global power story that shows up in your weekly budget.
We also get into the Epstein files and the bigger question of accountability when the names are powerful and the allegations are horrific. That leads into a conversation we see up close through court work: fewer people having kids, the pressure to chase careers just to afford life, and why North Carolina moving toward a 50-50 custody starting point could matter for outcomes like stability and crime.
To bring it home, Rob tells a true fugitive recovery story that ends in a church parking lot takedown, plus a rare follow-up years later when someone we once arrested shows up doing better, sober, working, and moving forward. If you’re coming to our Dog the Bounty Hunter and Leland Chapman live podcast meet and greet, we share the details too. Subscribe, share the show, leave a review, and grab tickets while seats are still available.
What's going on, everybody? How are y'all doing tonight? I'm Rob. I'm Chad. What's up? Hey man. Hey, did you uh stay away from downtown Wilmington during the Zaya Festival?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I did. I did tell you, man. Apparently. Yeah, a lot of people like to come to that, but if you're local, we kind of kind of stay away and participate in.
SPEAKER_02Well, uh here's the reason, here's a big reason why, because it's been it's been in the news.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I saw uh David Harris Jr., kind of popular um I don't know, like podcast guy. Yeah. Uh he had a breakdown of the video of the uh Marine getting stabbed. Stabbed.
SPEAKER_02And there and there's been more than just that stabbing.
SPEAKER_01There's been three total. How are incompetent um guys didn't didn't take care of it very well.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's a product of the belt reform, I think.
SPEAKER_01Yes, it is.
SPEAKER_02It is very it is a product of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're you let them out. Well, you're getting a lot of well that um and as far as like police department work, they're they're not getting proper training. Right. They're just trying to fill slots.
SPEAKER_02I'm not, you know, WPD, I'm not a big fan of. Uh I I I don't I I try to stay away from downtown. Yeah. When we're not here at office, I try to stay away. Right. You know, it's not like it used to be, man. I it used to be a lot safer. Now it's got it's gotten it's gotten rough. Yeah. But you know, Little Wilmington and National News. I know, right? And it is crazy. But man, the weather note, shoot, man. Everybody saw everybody getting their damn boats out ready. Yeah, but it's getting that time.
SPEAKER_01You're gonna get your jesky ready. I am. I'm changing the oil in it and I'm getting getting ready to drop it in the water as soon as I can.
Iran Tensions And Oil Leverage
SPEAKER_02Well, on bigger and better news, how about let's see, where we're gonna start out here. All right, so let's talk about this whole Iran thing for a second because I got a little, I got a little input on this. All right. We're all not happy with the gas prices. We're not happy to wait.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I got a truck there.
SPEAKER_02Whatever it is. So, you know, the like last couple podcasts, you know, I'm not I'm not real keen on you know, Trump at some point.
SPEAKER_01And what what how he's handling things? It's better than what we had for for sure. Y'all better remember that. You remember that? Yeah, you better remember it is better than it was, but it's not great at the moment, but I don't like the way he talks sometimes. Yeah, yeah, he does need to humble himself a little bit.
SPEAKER_02So, this is what I was thinking about Iran. Okay. So he has decapitated Iran. Like, he has like straight up hurt them, took out leader after litter after leader, right? Yeah, right. The Strait of Hamas, that's that is I think that is the main key right there. I think that's the main key of how Iran makes money too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, it is. But I I I keep wondering though, like, why is it if we if we truly only depend on them for what we don't here here it here's here's here here's I'm getting to it.
SPEAKER_02I'm getting to it. Oh, okay. I'm gonna answer your question here in a minute.
SPEAKER_01Okay, cool.
SPEAKER_02Because I just saw it and I was like, oh, makes sense a little bit now. Well, the strait keeps getting closed. Well, you know, Trump came out and said, hey, America's open, we'll say all kinds of oil. And guess what's happening? The Gulf of America is busy right now with tons of ships coming in out buying oil from the U.S. No. Do you so you kind of see where I'm coming from now? Like we're not depending on uh we're not dependent on their oil, which is great, right? But a lot of other countries are, and guess what? You want oil, you can buy it from us, sure can, and we're not gonna sponsor terrorism. Worldwide commodity. So, I mean, I you kind of, you know, you understand why Trump's doing it. I, you know, if that's the case. Right. If that's the case. That's that's that was my that's my input on it on it right now. That's what I keep saying.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, a lot of times he's he's several steps ahead of people, and they don't give him no credit, but I hope I hope that's what's going on. I mean too, me too. I I'm I'm still, I guess, at checkers and he's playing chess, but um I don't understand it.
SPEAKER_02Um I mean, not I listen, all right. All these other podcasters, us, everybody else can have their own opinions. And everybody's got their own opinion.
SPEAKER_01Everybody's got their own opinion about this, and nobody truly knows. Um, you know, they they can speculate, you know, as much as they want. Yep, but um, it's just a guess.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and so I mean to that's that's my guess, and that's what it kind of sounds like because right, because that's it it and ultimately that's what Trump kind of it sounds like, you know, how Trump works. Right. Like he's got there's a there's an ulterior motive that we don't know about it just pops up, oh shit. Okay, well he's okay, well, that makes sense now. Well, but he's not gonna tell you, he's not gonna show you his cars, neither.
SPEAKER_01No, no, he's not.
Epstein Files And Moral Outrage
SPEAKER_02So I don't know. It's gonna be interesting to kind of see what happens. I mean uh it it's crazy over there in Iran, you know, the whole that whole area that it's just nobody understands like the craziness that's going on. They they hate us, they've been trying to kill us for for for years. Right so I mean, who knows? Well and maybe they could tell us a little bit more about the Epstein files.
SPEAKER_01I would like to know what's going on with all these sick perverted people. Did you see uh um Ms. Melania coming out and saying that uh she had nothing to do with it and she said it they they need to be released? Yeah, did you see that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I saw that.
SPEAKER_01She gave a press uh release um about that.
SPEAKER_02So um and did you hear what Pam Pam Bondi said if if they released all the names and the whole system would collapse? Well, guess what? You know what? Let it you know, let it out. These people need to go. Like if you keep like you messing with a kid, dude, come on, man. You ought to be hung up by your balls on the front on a front courthouse steps.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's I keep seeing little clips here and there of of how sick that whole thing was. And it's it's crazy to think that there's people out there that would uh that would do that. Yeah.
Fewer Kids Divorce And Custody Shifts
SPEAKER_02Uh dude, it is so like prevalent like th throughout the world. Uh it's just pure evil, man. You know how you know it's good versus evil, you know, and it's just the way it is. And I it's it's horrible. I think it's evil. I think dude, I'm telling you, I believe, you know, I believe in God and the devil. And I think it I think it's the devil just trying to work his way into, you know, and just just destroy the world. He's at work. Yeah, he definitely is. Um, another little topic that you brought up a while ago. Remember, we were talking about this, yeah. We talked about this before. About how uh like people now are not having kids.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah. I was just looking at current topics, yeah, and tell something about um how uh this generation is uh they're slacking on you know the kids. Yeah, yeah. Focusing on uh careers. You have to now, hell yeah, expensive. But and and also, I mean, it's like um the white um liberal ladies, you know, it's another issue. I would imagine. You know, we could end up being uh, you know, each country has its own amount of people that they they do population growth surveys. Right. And you know, there's certain countries that are negative and most of them are you know positive.
SPEAKER_02I think ours is actually down.
SPEAKER_01I think we could be running into an a break-even or even negative Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, I it it's good to see because now, you know, with what we do for a living, we see a lot, you know, right, especially when it comes to courts, like you know, divorces and and child custody and stuff like that. And it's it gets it's horrible. And um, I just saw not too long ago where uh the standard now in North Carolina is gonna be where it they're gonna start off, like you say, if uh husband and wife split up, they got a couple kids. And you know, usually the kids got you know the the mother gets full custody and the dad's having to pay out the yin-yang. It's it's a to me, it's a whole it's a scam. It's a way for the courts to make money. But now North Carolina's saying, all right, we're gonna do this. It's we're gonna start off with 50-50 because they know the courts know that the majority of the divorces would have that have kids, if you've got both parents in the lives, you're gonna have less crime, less, you know, less of everything, uh, more productive uh citizens in America, as you can say. Um but I am glad that I'm kind of glad to hear that. That's gonna be a new thing.
SPEAKER_01That's a different change that probably for the better.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I mean I think so. I would hope so anyway. You know, you just you you hear it, but do you actually see it? You know, that's that's what's gonna, you know, who knows? We'll see. We'll see.
SPEAKER_01But oh yeah, the only the other thing over the weekend was uh I watched a little bit of the Masters.
SPEAKER_02Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I mean, you know, I like I like to watch golf. Yeah, I appreciate it. I'm not a big golfer, but I can I try. I can appreciate the sport.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's fun, man. It's fun.
SPEAKER_01You know, um, but um Royal Mackery McAlee McElrey.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. He's hard. It's hard to say his name. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh he Oh Roy. Yeah, he won uh he won it for the second time in a row. Heck yeah. Have been uh duplicated since uh Tiger Tiger Woods on. Oh, Tiger Woods. I heard Tiger uh text him and said uh welcome to the club.
SPEAKER_02Which club? The drinking club?
SPEAKER_01Now let's go have a drink. Tiger, you need to chill, bud. Sorry. Tiger's not a good time for for the person.
SPEAKER_02No man, don't be don't don't be like uh texting nobody right now. That's probably not a good idea, you know.
Live Event Tickets Sponsors And Venue
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. He needs to chill. Right, right. But anyway, kind of cool. Cool. And I go see him all the time. He comes sees us. You know, he he books a lot for like seven miles, stuff like that, too. So nice. So for this event, though, guys, look, let me let me tell you. So Dog at Dog and Leland and Cess, they're all coming from different parts of the country, you know, coming from a long ways. And we want to show them how not to get stabbed here in Wilmington, but but show them, but show them how how gracious us southers Southerners here in Wilmington.
SPEAKER_01If any of y'all listening haven't been here, you need to come check us out here in Wilmington. I wouldn't, you know, say move here. I would say visit.
SPEAKER_02Visit. Don't move here.
SPEAKER_01We got a lot of people moving here. Yeah, we do have a lot of people moving here. Just just to come visit. But uh, it's beautiful this time of year. The Azades are in full bloom. I mean, we're at the coast, man. I mean Yeah, yeah. I mean, we got the river. We got, you know, it's like a it's a cool spot.

SPEAKER_02Dude, I'm telling you, man. It's it's gonna be a good time. Uh I can't wait to I can't wait to go hang out with them for a little bit and go kind of catch up. I ain't seen Leland and a dog in quite a while.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. They'll be getting here on Friday.
Story Time Church Parking Lot Capture
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's awesome. Yep, cool. All right, uh, so a story of the week. Huh, let's see. So uh I've been eyeballing this story for the past couple weeks. I said, you know what? Let's go ahead and do it. It's this guy caught in a church parking lot. Okay, you want me to tell you all about it? Let's hear it. This is story time.
unknownWoo woo!
SPEAKER_02All right, so I'm uh uh Mark Cartret, good friend of ours, right? Right. He he hit reached out to me and said, Hey man, I got this guy that's you know that's on the run from me. Uh it's a small bond. It's not say, I want to say it was like an$8,000 bond. He said, but I know he's gonna be hanging out with baby mama. Of course, you know, same story, just different, just different person.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_02All right, so I go to Tabor City, you know what I said, Razor City? AKA Razor City, right? Um, and I start looking. And tracking down the baby mama is what I'm trying to track down. I sat and watched her plays for freaking hours and nothing. She didn't show up or whatever. So I left. Yeah, because I've been there all day looking. Did not come up with nothing. No, the addresses that he had were all old. There there was not there was nothing. The sheriff's department there and the police department in that area said they didn't. They knew exactly who the hell I was looking for, and they've been looking for him too. And that um but they don't too too put too much emphasis on it because it is Taber City. So I said, Alright, so here's my card. Give me a call if you hear anything. Literally a couple weeks go by, and they're like, hey, wasn't uh I get a phone call from a deputy. Hey man, when do you uh plan on coming back out this way looking at for Mr. Uh Smiley? We call him Smiley. And I said, Well, I said I haven't got any new tips or anything, so I don't know why I was up. He goes, Man, I've got uh a CI that's told me that he's back in town and he's been out of town working and that he is uh back at baby mama's house. I said, Alright, well I'll go check it out. So I you know, I leave, come back, uh, I get to Tabor City and I go sit and watch Baby Mama's house. Baby mama was there and I saw a movement, but I didn't see him. So this is the only thing I had though was baby mama. So I I mean that was it. And then the this the sheriff's CI. But so the dude's supposed to I so I make it gamble. I'm like, hey, I'm gonna go talk to baby mama. So it's a little shithole trailer park, you know. Go up in there, and then and I'm sitting there talking with baby mama, and baby mama goes, Yeah, I just kicked him out. That's something he would he was cheating on me, blah, blah, blah. And I was like, oh man, I lucked up. You know, I'm this is what I'm thinking to myself.
SPEAKER_01She's mad. She's ready, ready to give you everything.
SPEAKER_02Yes, ready to give me everything. I said, All right. I said, Well, where's he at? Well, he's he don't have a car, he's out walking around town. I'm like, well, hell, that ain't gonna help me none. All right, so cool. I'll um here's my number, call me. I'm gonna go look. I literally go, I drive like three blocks. And I and I'm right in the middle of town here, three blocks, and it's not a big, you know, it's not a big town. And I get around like the third block, and I see this dude walking, and I'm like, hold on. No, I ain't no way in hell. So I pull, I look, and there's a church right to my left, and I pull in real quick, and there's like a school bus. And I pull in behind the school bus, I get my binoculars, jump out the truck, I go behind the school bus, he can't see me. I see this guy walking towards towards you got identifying marks. Yeah, yeah. He was he had a um, he was a little short guy, mustache, he had a funky, it was a weird haircut. Um, and the girlfriend did tell me that he was um wearing a camouflage coat. So I said, okay, all right, cool. So I'm I I've got binoculars on. I got binoculars on him. And it camouflage coat, it's him. It is him 100%. And he's walking towards the church. And I'm right there by the road.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, No, this is a guy that you've never seen, right?
SPEAKER_02I've never seen, never dealt with him, nothing like that at all.
SPEAKER_01Doing it, doing this for somebody else. You gotta be sure you got the right person.
SPEAKER_02Right, right.
SPEAKER_01Not some other guy in a country place with camouflage coat.
SPEAKER_02But I know it's I know it's him, bro. I know it's him. All right, cool. And he's walking with his other guy, and I'm standing back there going, well, what the hell am I doing? And he's walking closer and closer towards. You by yourself? I'm by myself. Okay. And I'm like, all right, so I got it, you know, I got my vest on and everything. And I'm like, huh. Well, what as soon as he passes the bus, this is what I'm gonna do. As soon as he passes the bus, I'm gonna jump out and come around and sneak up from behind and surprise him. I said, all right, so I get my taser out, I'm ready, dude. And he's just sitting there, he's walking so slow. I'm like, hurry the hell up, you know, because I don't want to see him see me coming.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_02And I'm pretty good about uh uh about running and you can't hear me. I I'm I'm pretty sneaky. So finally he finally gets past and I come out and I'm I'm running as hard as I can as quite as I can. He doesn't hear me at all until I get right up on him and I yell, I'm like, get out of the ground, shame your hands, don't move. He was like, What? And I like I just pummel him right there in the parking lot. You such as such, yeah. So I mean, I get him in handcuffs, and the other dude that was with him was like, What's going on? I'm like, if you don't leave, I said, I'm gonna, I said, I'm gonna tase you. He was like, Oh, I'm good. See you later. Other guy takes off. Well, I get him up and I take him to the back of my truck. I'm like, dude, you're unlucky day. I just saw you walking on the side of the road. Because he was like, How'd you get me? I'm like, I just saw you walking on the side of the road. So I start like, I'm like, hey, you got anything on you? He's like, yes. I'm like, all right, what do you have on you? He's like, I got a needle. I'm like, well, at least he's telling me this, and I'm not sticking my hand in his pocket.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. You don't want that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. And so we I safely get it out, whatever. I find like a like a Gatorade bottle I had in my truck, you know, and I put all that stuff in there and I sealed it up, you know. So when I took him back to the mark, I was like, here, go dispose of this because I don't want it in my truck. So we get I get him and and on the way, on the way to the jail, I was asking him, I said, Man, I said, why why you not go to court? He goes, man, he goes, I got a he goes, I got a bad drug problem. He goes, I'm just gonna be honest with you. I got a bad drug problem.
SPEAKER_01I said, Well, at least he at least he's honest. Yeah, at that point, you got nothing else to use, I guess.
Seeing A Past Fugitive Doing Better
SPEAKER_02So um I dropped him off of Mark. Mark wasn't too happy with him, of course. Right. But hey, story of Mr. Smiley getting caught in church parking lot. I snu dude, I'm telling you, man, I that was that I scared the shit out of him. I thought he like he jumped out of his skin for a minute. Uh oh, but speaking of uh not about this story, but I was at New Hanover writing a bomb the other day, and I sent you a picture.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So the guy I didn't know who that was at first because that's been years ago.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. So the guy comes in and I'm like, this guy looks familiar.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, I'm trying to put I'm like, so he is telling you about a story that we've told before. Yes, and he sends me this picture of this guy, and this was what? This book eight years ago.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, eight years ago.
SPEAKER_01Um, this one where we went to California, and um guy left here, went out to rehab out in California, Santa Monica area, yeah. And I he was outside of Anaheim, and um we rolled up on him and we were in a Tesla literally because he couldn't hear us, right? Right. And uh all three of us got out of that in the neighborhood while he was walking down the sidewalk and we kind of rushed him. Um, it was that guy that you saw at the jail, right? Yes. Uh so he walks in. I was confused. I was like, you didn't bond this guy out, did you? He's like, no, no, no, no, no. Tell him, tell him what what happened, Rob.
SPEAKER_02All right, so he comes in, he looks at me, and I look at him, I'm like, man, this looks this this guy looks familiar. And he looks at me and I'm like, Holy shit, it is you. And I was like, wow. I was like, how you been, dude? He's like doing good, not on crack anymore. I'm like, well, it looks like because I can barely tell you. I can tell I barely can't.
SPEAKER_01He gained some weight, huh?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he gained a bunch of weight, but he's he's got his own CDL license. He's doing really good. Okay. Uh uh it's kind of um I it it was just kind of ironic, you know, because he's the one that like I like he he had a little razor knife and he got me here and we beat the hell out of him, like yeah, fighting him.
SPEAKER_01That was that was quite the story. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If he going all the way out there and getting him. We told that story uh a while ago. Yeah, I don't know which which episode it is, but it's it's one where we went to California and got him and we ran into the whole thing at the hotel. Right. You know, and he tried to fake a heart attack.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. And it did he we talked about it. He's like, Yeah, I was I was bullshitting. And I was like, I know you were.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he admitted, huh?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. I know I knew you were. He goes, man, he goes, he was trying everything to get out of it. I know. And his girlfriend that was with him goes, he goes, You took him down? I was like, Yeah, we took him down. I said, We I said, we worked him. And he was like, she was like, Well, he's a big guy. I was like, man, it doesn't matter. I said, Oh, we were so mad at this guy. He goes, Yeah, they were pretty pissed off at me. I was like, Yeah, dude.
SPEAKER_01We had to catch him twice. Yeah. Once in California, and then we got to Charlotte, and you know, once you get in the state, you can surrender it to any jail, right? Technically. We gave him over to the law enforcement of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, when we got off the airplane and they took away and he faked a heart attack with them, and they took him to the hospital. And we and technically we're still on the bond until he makes it to the jail. Right.
SPEAKER_02But he told me he did he did say he goes, my girlfriend, my my girlfriend at my ex-girlfriend at the time gave me up, didn't I say, Yep. Oh, you told him. I told him, man, that's that's a rule we don't tell, man. I know, but that one has been so long ago.
SPEAKER_01I see.
SPEAKER_02I said, Yeah, sure.
SPEAKER_01You know your suspicion was right. Oh well. Um, yeah, that we had to catch him again in Charlotte. You know, he got out, he got away from the cops in the in the freaking hospital. They just left him there because his shift was over.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um, so it that was kind of ironic seeing it there. But I'm glad to see him doing better.
