Morning by Morning, July 4, 2025 - Declaration of Independence “With a Firm Reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence”

 

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Be high and lifted up in my heart, in my nation, and throughout the earth (John 12:32). ...

 

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1).

 

On this day we call The 4th of July, all our nation celebrates the freedom we have as a nation and as we remember to thank those who risked their lives and all they had by their words in their declaration of independence to establish the United States of America.

 

Those gathered on that day in 1776 were by and large men of faith—faith in You, faith in the justness of their cause, faith in the necessity of their actions. To be the land of the free required the words and actions of the brave. And for that bravery and courage of conviction, they turned to You as the Source of their Support and Overseer of the soul of this new nation they formed.

 

The evidence of their humble reliance upon You alone is found in the last paragraph of their Declaration of Independence dated July 4, 1776:

 

“We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States.... And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

 

Thank You for the gift of freedom—first and foremost, for the freedom we have and the freedom we can all have in Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior, as the only One who can truly set us free. “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1). “He who the Son sets free is free indeed” (John 8:36). “Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17). 

 

And also on this day of remembrance and celebration, I thank You for the freedom we have as nation. As our National Motto of the United States of America still declares, despite every effort to eradicate it from the soul of our nation: “In God We Trust.”

 

Yes, Lord. Just like in the beginning, when our founding fathers declared their “firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence,” their appeal to “the Supreme Judge of the world,” in God we still trust. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
