3 POINT NUGGETS EP 18

I got Rich When I understood this- Jeff Bezos

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon is worth over 200 billion USD today, but he did not get there overnight. His was a tale of failure, focus, and adaptability.

In this episode, we look at three strategies that contributed to his success and show you how to apply them to your life so you too can succeed.

Hey, welcome back to 3-point nuggets where we talk about courage, resilience, and grit. My name is Bessy Ebule.

One of the strategies that Bezos used was to Embrace Failure as a Learning Opportunity

In the early 2000s, Amazon launched the Fire Phone, a smartphone that was intended to compete with giants like Apple and Samsung. Finally, the market was going to get some extra competition and Apple and Samsung users wouldn’t be as proud!

but the phone was a commercial flop and Amazon eventually had to write off $170 million due to the device's poor sales.

While this might have been a catastrophic setback for other companies, Bezos viewed it as a valuable lesson. Instead of dwelling on the failure, he used the insights gained to fuel the development of future successful products, like the Amazon Echo and Alexa.

Bezos encouraged a culture of “failing fast,” where teams were not punished for trying something new and failing, but rather encouraged to learn from their mistakes and iterate.

This philosophy enabled Amazon to move forward quickly, improving existing products and creating new ones out of failures. Bezos’s emphasis on learning from failures allowed Amazon to maintain its innovative edge, helping the company grow from a small online bookstore to a tech giant spanning multiple industries.

Now you know that embracing failure can be very difficult especially when we have all been taught to glorify success and underrate failures. How can you compete and lose and still be happy? So we find that the child who gets good grades in school is recognised and praised, while the one who is behind in class is looked down upon.

The people or teams who win gold medals in competitions are rewarded with huge media coverage, endorsement deals, and lots of money but the guys who come last do not seem to have to have any place in society.

HOW CAN YOU THEN EMBRACE FAILURE?

Here’s how! If you try to enter a competition and you are rejected, try again next time. If your heart is broken from a relationship, pick up the pieces and move on, and if your idea or business is not needed in a particular city or circle, go somewhere else.

Notice that after the failure of the Fire phone, Bezos learnt his lessons and moved on instead of continuing to waste his energy to fight for a market share with the likes of Apple and Samsung.

As Truman Capote said, “failure is the condiment that gives success its flavour”.

When you embrace failure, you are on your way to success.

There was another strategy that Bezos used which was:

Focusing on Customer Satisfaction Over Short-Term Profits

One of the reasons Amazon succeeded where others failed is because of their unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. From its inception, Amazon has prioritized the customer experience, even when it came at the cost of short-term profits. Bezos believed that if Amazon could keep its customers happy and deliver a superior service, profits would follow in the long run.

But this customer-first approach was risky and led to substantial financial losses in Amazon’s early years. For several years, Amazon operated at a loss, reinvesting revenue into improving infrastructure, expanding its product offerings, and enhancing customer service.

You would think that profit making was the aim of a business, but Amazon seemed to be different. Now, many investors and industry experts criticized Bezos for not focusing on profitability sooner. They viewed his strategy as unsustainable. However, Bezos remained firm in his belief that long-term value would come from putting customers first.

As an example, when Amazon Prime was launched in 2005, the company offered free two-day shipping on eligible products which was a revolutionary concept at the time. While it sounded good for the customer, this decision was an expensive one, as Amazon had to invest heavily in logistics and infrastructure to ensure timely deliveries.

But Bezos was confident that a loyal customer base would lead to greater returns in the long run. Today, Amazon Prime is one of the company’s most successful services, boasting millions of subscribers worldwide.

What was the payoff here? The strong focus on customer obsession over short-term profits. Amazon effectively built a loyal customer base, ensuring the company’s long-term success.

If you start a business or offer a service, don’t be in a rush to make profit from the word go. Instead, concentrate on understanding the needs of your customers or clients and try to satisfy them as much as possible. Keep adding value to your products and services and your customers will interpret it that you care for their needs and eventually pledge their loyalty to your brand. This is what will bring the profit in the long run.

Bezos focused on customer satisfaction and today, Amazon is worth over 200 billion US dollars and Bezos is the second richest person in the world proving that focusing on customer satisfaction pays.

That leads us to the third strategy Bezos used. But before we dive into it, please  follow the channel and turn the notification bell on if you are new here so you never miss an episode from us. So, what was Bezos’s third strategy?

He Adapted and Diversified Amazon's Business Model

One of Jeff Bezos’s key strategies for overcoming failure has been his ability to adapt and diversify Amazon’s business model. Initially, Amazon was founded as an online bookstore, but the company faced competition from traditional bookstores and skepticism about the viability of online shopping.

However, Bezos envisioned Amazon as “The Everything Store,” and he was determined to expand beyond books. Despite early doubts and financial challenges, Bezos continuously adapted Amazon’s business model to include a wide array of products and services.

This adaptability was critical when Amazon encountered difficulties in specific markets. For example, when Amazon faced challenges with its first cloud computing services, rather than giving up, Bezos saw the potential for cloud technology to serve other businesses.

In 2006, Amazon launched Amazon Web Services (AWS), which provides cloud computing solutions to companies worldwide. At the time, the move into cloud computing was unconventional for an online retailer. However, AWS has since become one of Amazon’s most profitable ventures, generating billions in revenue annually and solidifying Amazon’s position as a leader in the tech industry.

Similarly, Bezos’s willingness to diversify Amazon’s offerings extended to the development of the Kindle e-reader. When Bezos noticed a shift towards digital media, he seized the opportunity to create a device that would change how people consumed books.

Guess what? Amazon not only succeeded in the e-reader market with the Kindle but also became a major player in digital content distribution, further cementing its dominance in multiple sectors.

Bezos’s strategy of adaptation and diversification allowed Amazon to stay ahead of trends and expand its influence in various industries. By continuously evolving Amazon’s business model, Bezos transformed Amazon from an online bookstore into a conglomerate with interests in e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence.

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN ADAPT AND DIVERSIFY

There is no point in sticking to what is not working. Once you find that the market is tilting to a specific direction, you must make the switch. Imagine if you started selling phones without cameras at this time? Do you think you would be able to sell much? I doubt it.

Keep adapting and looking for new ways to serve your market. The good thing is there are always opportunities in every field in our ever-changing world and if you are ready to divest, you will quickly tap into those opportunities and succeed.

If Bezos had concentrated on just selling only hard copy books online till today, Amazon may have gone into irrelevance. But his ability to adapt when it mattered made the difference.

So, embrace failure as a learning opportunity, focus on customer satisfaction over short term profit, and adapt to the changing dynamics in your field. You will most likely succeed.
