What is your idea of success? Have you been judging yourself by your inabilities rather than your capacities? In this video, I’ll share three ways you can find true success!
Hey, welcome back to 3 Point Inspiration where we discuss courage, resilience, and grit. My name is Bessy Ebule.
NUMBER ONE- DEFINE WHAT SUCCESS MEANS TO YOU!
Will you be successful when you have as much money as Elon Musk, or become the president of the United States like Donald Trump, or Mother Teresa who dedicated her life to helping the poor and vulnerable? Do you aspire to be like any of these people, if so Why?
If you want to succeed, you must first be able to define what success means for you! Not for Elon Musk or Donald Trump! The general definition of success is the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. But what is that aim or purpose? What does that mean to you?
For some people success is being able to jump off a plane 15,000 feet above the ground? Others may dedicate their lives to sports and fight for the best medals. And yet, for others, it is to travel thousands of kilometres away from their homes to bring hope to others. Given these scenarios, you will agree that it can be very vague and confusing to define success in a general term because people’s aims or perceived purposes in life are varied and relative.
It becomes harder to define success when every day we are bombarded with success stories of sportsmen and women, politicians, scientists and even those closest to us. Harry just got a new job, what a successful career he’s had! Jessica just went on her dream holiday with her family, what a successful family she has! The athlete just won a gold medal at the Olympics, what an enviable feat to achieve!
Now, there’s nothing wrong in celebrating other people’s successes but you should not do this to your own detriment. The truth is you also are a candidate for success in your field with the skills, gifts, and talents that you have whether you believe it or not. Sometimes, we commonise the abilities that we possess.
For you, it may be the exceptional ability to write and articulate well. For others, it may be the ability to organise just about anything, yet for others, it may be the ability to bring hope to others, make them see a reason to be alive. If you can define what you are good at, what resonates with you, you are on you way to success.
If you view it like this, then everyone can be successful, everyone can make an impact, everyone is a genius because everyone was created with peculiar skills and abilities. No one is useless including you. Remember the fish can swim but cannot fly and while the birds can fly high in the sky, they cannot swim under water. Take the fish out of water and it dies, take the bird under water to swim and it is no more.
There’s a popular quote attributed to Albert Einstein which says “everyone is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing it is stupid”.
Every time you take a fish out of the water, as it is gasping for breath, it is thinking, I don’t belong here. Just take me back into the water and see me come back alive.
Don’t live your life like a fish out of water. Don’t try swimming when you should be flying! Don’t try to live in the jungle when you should be at home. Determine what success is to you and live it out. Let me know in the comments below, can you truly say you can define what success means to you?
NUMBER 2- BRING THE SKILL OUT!
When you have found your space in life, what resonates with you, the next step is to develop your skills through learning. This is what schools were meant to do! Unfortunately, many people go to school but are still frustrated in life.
The word educate is from the Latin word “educo” which means to draw out, train or nourish. For education to be complete, there must be something inside of you that is untapped or unused. The process of education will find it out and develop it just like companies drill deep into the ground to find oil and then refine it into different products. But remember, if the oil was not in the ground in the first place, there will be nothing to draw out.
In the same way, you cannot become truly successful if your education is not aligned with something that is buried deep inside of you. Maybe an ability to sing and touch human souls, to teach and make people understand, or to use your influence to galvanise people for a greater cause. This is the main reason people are not excelling in their lives. Their most potent skills have not been discovered, they don’t enjoy what they do and life is bland!
For you to succeed, you need to polish those skills that you have. Yours may be painting, or helping others to make money, or cooking. Whatever it is, you must polish it to bring the best out of you.
If your skill is organising events, learn what the latest trends in events are. What are people’s current tastes? If yours is singing, what kind of music appeals to people nowadays? If yours is cooking, what vintage recipes or new ones are appealing to people in your area?
Don’t waste your time educating yourself with irrelevant information. Focus on learning that is geared towards sharpening your skills. No point learning about law when you are a musician. No point wasting your time on medicine when you are a cook. There’s no point learning everything about world history if you are not going to lecture people about it.
And if you are planning to enrol in a university course, please think thoroughly. Going to sit in classrooms and forcing yourself to cram information you are not passionate about will not lead you to success in life no matter how many degrees you have. Luckily for us in this generation, information and education have been so democratised that with just with your internet connection and your curiosity to learn, you can get a whole lot of relevant information that you could not access previously, and you can supercharge your success with it.
I like to know in the comments below, have you found a skill that you have or want to develop? If not, what’s stopping you?

NUMBER 3- USE YOUR GIFTS TO SERVE OTHERS
If you want to be truly successful, you must think of your gifts in terms of serving others. Imagine if you have the voice of an angel, wrote songs but no one listened to them! Imagine if you were a celebrity chef cooking for a restaurant and no one came in to eat, or imagine if you are know everything in your field, you are the best lecturer and there were no students to teach? So, while you may have the best gifts and talents, they are only as effective as far as you can use them to serve others.
Put yourself in the shoes of those you patronise. Why do you spend hundreds of dollars or whatever currency to go to watch a match? Because the players entertain you with their skills. Simply put, they serve you! They dazzle you with their ability to kick a ball or play a ball with a racquet! Why do you go to spend huge amounts of money eating in restaurants? Because the chef satisfies your hunger by serving you. Why do you spend your time going to sit in front of a lecturer or teacher? Because they serve you from their wealth of knowledge!
You really can’t separate your success from service. See yourself as a servant or if you want to make it sound attractive “as offering a service”. The service you offer will obviously be aligned to your gifts and talents that you have developed. It may be in hospitality, in finance, entertainment, medicine, or food. Whatever it is, be a good service provider. Or better put, be a good servant.
Hey thanks for listening and please let me know in the comments below, how are you going to serve people better with your gifts because that would be the secret of your success and if you are interested in building up yourself for success, don’t forget to listen my other episodes.
