15: Even Fantasy Heroines Experience Social Emotional Learning Moments - Interview with author Polly Holyoke

Karen Reeder

Skyriders is the ulimate fantasy series when it comes to moments of excitement and intense danger. But even a young developing heroine has moments where she must grow her social and emotional strengths. Author Polly Holyoke does an incredible job composing this story of constant peril, while also artfully weaving in very real things that all people go through. Feelings of aloneness and uncertainty are a major theme then of course deciding whether or not to attemp friendships. Not very many fantasy books go into such impactful themes. But Holyoke does a beautiful job combining the two (check out the sequel, The Sky King, where our heroine learns about coping with grief while further developing trust and friendships).
