Free Agency - What is it?
A Major League Baseball (MLB) player can become a free agent in a few ways:

Six years of service time
A player becomes a free agent with at least six years of service time in the MLB. 

Be released before reaching six years 
A player can become a free agent if released from their organization before reaching six years of service time. 

Be a non-tender free agent 
A player can become a non-tender free agent if they have less than six years of service time, but their team doesn't offer them a contract or salary arbitration by the tender deadline. 

Sign as a 10-year free agent from Japan 
A player can become a free agent if signed with an MLB team as a 10-year free agent from Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
