🎙️ Mic Manifestation Podcast | Mic Drop Confession
This week's anonymous confession comes from Edwin, who found himself questioning something many couples quietly struggle with.
While shopping at a swap meet, Edwin watched another man walk up and flirt with his girlfriend while she was only a few feet away. She didn't encourage it, and the man eventually walked away after realizing she was in a relationship.
But the experience left Edwin wondering...
Should he ask his girlfriend to dress less revealing when they're out together?
Is that controlling?
Is it insecurity?
Or is it simply having healthy boundaries in a relationship?
In this episode, we explore confidence, attraction, trust, communication, jealousy, respect, and where the line is between expressing your feelings and trying to change your partner.
💬 We want to hear from YOU!
Is it okay to ask your partner to dress differently?
Does revealing clothing naturally attract more attention?
Is this about respect, insecurity, or communication?

Uh but with that guys, let's jump into today's mic drop confessions. Uh Edwin's Edwin's letter. Today's letter comes from someone. Well, we'll call Edwin. Uh he writes in, he says, Hey Ben, I almost got into a fight this weekend, and I'm wondering if I'm looking at this the wrong way. My gra my girlfriend is absolutely gorgeous. She's beautiful, she's confident, she's definitely blessed in all the right places, right? She loves dressing up and showing off her figure. Honestly, I've never really had a problem with it because she's always with me. This weekend we went to the swap meet. I stopped at one booth looking at some uh tools while she's walk, well she walked over to another booth across from me. Uh while I was paying for something, I looked over and saw some guy talking to her. At first, I thought maybe he was asking about something in the booth or something. Then I realized he was flirting with her, smiling, complimenting her, trying to get her attention, trying to get that number. You know, I walked over, he looked at me, uh, realizing we were together, apologized and walked away. You know, nothing happened, but ever since then, I keep thinking about it. You know, my girlfriend dresses pretty revealing most of the time. She enjoys looking good, she likes showing off her body. I don't want to be that controlling boyfriend who tells her what she can and can't wear, you know. But I also wonder if if it's okay to ask her to dress a little less revealing when we're out together. Am I being insecure? Or is she being disrespectful? Or is this just something I need to accept? Because beautiful women are always going to be are always gonna get attention. What do you think, Edwin? Man, that's crazy. I think a lot of uh I think a lot more men have asked themselves this exact question than would admit, you know. I also think of I also think a lot of women have been asking or have asked this exact question as well. This isn't really about clothing, it's about emotions, it's about feeling protective, it's about confidence, it's about trust, and it's about whether love means accepting someone exactly as they are, or asking them to meet you somewhere in the middle, right? Let's start with the obvious, Edwin. You know, your girlfriend didn't ask another guy to walk over, you know, from your letter, she didn't flirt back, she didn't disrespect you, she didn't hide that she was with you. The guy approached her. That's an important distinction because sometimes when we feel uncomfortable, it's you know, our brains automatically look for someone to blame, you know. And the easiest person to blame is often the person we're closest to. Now, does the way someone dress influence the amount of attention they receive? Sometimes, yeah. Uh, you know, that doesn't mean someone deserves unwanted attention, and it doesn't mean every person who just who dresses confidently is looking for attention. You know, people wear clothes for a lot of reasons. You know, some people enjoy fashion, some people enjoy feeling attractive, some people simply like the way certain clothes make them feel, you know, and yes, you know, some people enjoy the attention they receive. Those are all different motivations. You know, the mistake we make is assuming we know which one applies. You know, Edwin says his girlfriend likes showing off her figure. Maybe she generally enjoys expressing herself, maybe dressing that way makes her feel confident. Maybe she grow, maybe she grew up hearing she should hide her body and now she's choosing not to, you know? Or maybe she likes being noticed. The truth is we don't know, only she knows. That's why this conversation shouldn't start with accusations, it should start with curiosity. Instead of saying, Hey, you need to stop dressing like that, girl. Imagine saying that. You know, whatever it is, imagine saying, Can I tell you something that's been on my mind when that guy started hitting on you at the swap meet? I realized it bothered me more than I expected. You know, I don't want to control what you wear, but I wanted I wanted to tell you honestly how it made me feel. You know, see the difference? You know, one starts in one starts an argument, the other starts a conversation because here's something I've learned. The strongest couples usually don't win because they've never disagreed. You know, they win because they know how to disagree without making each other the enemy. Right? You know, um, you know, so with that, you know, you know what really stood out to me in Edwin's letter? It wasn't that another guy started flirting with his girlfriend, honestly. That happens, you know. If someone is attractive, people are gonna notice them regardless. Some people would admire from a distance, and unfortunately, some people will cross the line and make make that move, even if they're already in a relationship. You know, what stood out to me was this sentence I've never really had a problem with it because she's with me. You know, that tells me something changed, right? Before the swap meet, Edwin was comfortable. After the SWAT meet, something shifted. And I think we've all had one of those moments in a relationship where something happens that makes us stop and think. Not because our partner didn't did anything wrong, right? But because our perspective changed. Maybe you've never thought about it until it happened and in right in front of you, right? You know, seeing another man confidently walk up over to your girlfriend while you're standing just a few feet away. You know, that's a different feeling than simply knowing, you know, people look at her, right? It suddenly becomes real. You know, you start asking yourself questions like does this happen when I'm not around? How often do guys approach her? Is she okay with that? Am I overreacting? Those actions can spiral pretty quickly, and here's what I think a lot of couples make mistakes at. You know, instead of talking about what they're actually feeling, they argue about the clothes, the clothes becomes the argument when they really just when they're really just the surface underneath that, right? There's fear, there's insecurity, there's vulnerability, maybe even a little jealousy. And before anybody jumps into the comments saying jealousy is toxic, bro, you know, let's let's slow down for a second. You know, feeling jealous doesn't automatically make someone controlling, right? Jealousy is an emotion. What matters is what you do with it. There's a huge difference between saying I feel uncomfortable, and saying you're never wearing that again. You know, one is honesty, the other is controlling. You know, man, my eyes are hurting. Uh, relationships need honesty, right? They don't need control. Now, let's flip this around for a minute. Imagine you're Edwin's girlfriend, you get dressed, you put together an outfit that makes you feel comfortable. Maybe you worked really hard to get in shape. Maybe you finally feel comfortable in your own skin after years of struggling with your with your confidence. Then your boyfriend comes home and says, Can you stop dressing like that? What's the first thing you're probably gonna what's the first thing you're probably gonna hear? You know, he doesn't like the way I look, he doesn't trust me, he's trying to change me. Even if that's not what Edwin means, that's how it can be received, you know. That's why working, that's why wording matters so much. Because if the conversation starts with your clothes are the problem, she's probably gonna get defensive. But if it starts with, can I tell you how I feel when that guy walked over to you? Now you're talking about feelings, not rules, right? And there's another place to this, you know, confidence. I think confidence gets misunderstood all the time. There's healthy confidence and there's seeking validation. They're not always the same thing. Healthy conversations or healthy confidence says I dress this way because I like it. Validation says I need other people to notice me to feel good. Now, I'm not saying Edwin's girlfriend is looking for validation, we don't know that, and it's not fair to assume it. But it's a healthy conversation for couples to have. You know, why do you like dressing this way? What does it mean to you? How does it make you feel? Those are great questions. Not because you're interrogating your partner, but because you're trying to understand them. I think one of the biggest problems in relationships today is that people stop trying to understand and start trying to win. You know, every disagreement turns into a debate. Someone has to be right, someone has to be wrong. But relationships aren't courtrooms, man. You know, they're partnerships. Sometimes the goal isn't providing your point, sometimes the goal is simply understanding why your partner feels the way they do. Now, let me ask everybody listening a question if you started dating someone and they already dressed a certain way, is it fair to ask them to change after you've been together for a while? You know, think about it because this happens all the time, bro. You know, someone meets a person, falls in love with them, and then six months later, I don't like the way you dress. You know? Well, that's a problem. That's probably, you know, that's probably how they dressed when you met them, right? So what changed? Did they change, or did the comfort level change? You know, once the relationship becomes serious, you know, that's an honest that's an honest question. Because if someone has already or has always been themselves, it's hard to suddenly tell them I need you to become someone different because now we're together, right? On the other hand, you know, relationships, relationships are about compromise. Every healthy relationship involves change. We all adjust little things from people we love, right? Maybe you stop staying out until two in the morning. Maybe you spend less time with certain friends. Maybe you text your partner when you get home because it gives them peace of mind. You know, those aren't necessarily signs of control, they're acts of consideration. You know, so where's the line? That's a million dollar question, right? And I don't think there's one answer that fits every couple. You know, some couples are perfectly comfortable with you know with revealing clothing, you know, others aren't. Neither relationship is automatically healthier than the other. You know, what matters is whether both people genuinely agree or whether one person feels pressured. You know, that's where resentment starts. Because nobody likes feeling controlled, right? But nobody likes feeling dismissed either. So if Edwin says, hey, I know you didn't do anything wrong, but I'd like to talk about how I how I felt, you know, I think that's fair. If she responds, you know, those are your insecurities, deal with it. That's probably not productive. Just like uh like it wouldn't be comp like it wouldn't be productive if Edwin said, Hey, you have to change because I said so. Right? Healthy relationships leave leave room for both people to be heard, not just one, right? Let me know what you guys think, man. But the draw, but you draw the line. You know what I find interesting about the whole situation? Everybody seems to focus on Edwin's girlfriend, but hardly anyone talks about the guy who walked up to her, right? Let's be honest. You know, he's the one who made the decision. He chose to walk over, he chose to start a conversation, he chose to flirt. Now we don't know if he really if he realized uh she was with someone. Edwin said as soon as the guy realized they were together, he apologized and walked away. To me, that actually says something. You know, he didn't keep pushing, he didn't disrespect Edwin, he didn't challenge him. He realized his mistake and he left. Could he have handled it differently from the beginning? Sure. Of course. But based on Edwin's story, this wasn't some guy trying to start a fight, it was someone who found an attractive woman attractive. You know, that happens every single day. And that's why I don't think the real issue is, you know, how do I step, how do I stop men from looking at my girlfriend? Because honestly, you can't. You know, if she's beautiful, people are gonna notice. If she's wearing sweatpants, people are gonna notice. If she's dressed up, people are gonna notice. Attractive people got attention, get attention. I'm sorry. That's really that's reality. So maybe the better question isn't how do I stop other people from looking? Maybe it's how do we handle it as a couple, you know, man. You know, uh yeah, because that's something you actually have control over. Let's say this happened again, another guy walks over. What's the expectation? Does Edwin immediately step in? Does his girlfriend politely say, Thank you, but I have a boyfriend? Do they laugh about it afterwards, or does it become another argument in the car? You know, that's the conversation couples should be having, not what are you wearing? What are you wearing? You know, but how do we handle situations like this together? Because life is going to throw situations at you. People flirt, co-workers flirt, someone sends a message on social media, someone buys your partner a drink, something someone compliments them at the gym. Those moments are unavoidable. You know, what matters is how your relationship responds to them. And this brings me to something I think is really important. There's a difference between admiration and disrespect. You know, looking at someone that's that's going to happen. Walking up and politely introducing yourself because you don't know they're in a relationship, that happens too. But once someone tells you I'm with somebody, that should be the end of it. You know, respect kicks in, and according to Edwin, that's exactly what happened. This guy apologized and walked away. So now let's talk about Edwin because I think what he's really asking isn't should she change? I think what he really wants to know is how do I stop feeling this way? You know, that's a much harder question. Because feelings don't disappear just because someone tells you. Don't be insecure. You know, have you ever noticed how people love? Throwing that word around, you know, insecure. It's almost because it's almost become an insult, right? You know, the moment someone says, Hey, that bothered me, someone else says, You're insecure, maybe, maybe not. You know, feeling uncomfortable doesn't automatically make someone insecure. Sometimes it means something touched the nerve, right? Sometimes it means you're still figuring out your own boundaries. You know, sometimes it means people hurt before or have been hurt before. You know, we don't know Edwin's history. You know, maybe someone cheated on him years ago. Maybe he's uh, you know, watched relationships fail or fall apart because boundaries weren't weren't uh respected, right? And my eyes have been bothering me, bro. Uh maybe this is the first serious relationship he's ever had. You know, context matters. You know, that's why I think couples need to stop labeling each other and start listening to each other. Imagine Edwin says, you know, hey, can I be honest? Watching another guy flirt with you made me uncomfortable instead of responding with you're just insecure. Imagine she says, you know, tell me why. You know, those two words, tell me why, can completely change a conversation. Because now Edwin has room to explain himself. You know, maybe he says, you know, it wasn't your outfit, it wasn't that I don't trust you, it was just seeing it happen right in front of me. Now she hear now she's hearing the heart, you know, instead of defending her herself against an accusation, and Edwin has to be willing to do the same thing. You know, if she says, you know, I've always dressed this way because it makes me feel confident, don't immediately hear, she wants attention. You know, listen, ask questions, understand. You know, one of the healthiest things you can ask your partner is help me understand, not you know, convince me I'm wrong, not defend yourself, just you know, help me understand because understanding build understanding builds comp builds I'm sorry, understanding builds empathy, right? And empathy builds trust. Now I know some people are watching and probably saying, Ben, if your girlfriend dressed like that, we'd have a problem. Others are saying, if my boyfriend told me how to dress, I'd leave. And you know what? Both those opinions exist every single day, right? That's why compatibility matters. You know, you don't want to spend years trying to change someone into the person you wish they were. You know, find someone whose values already align with yours. You know, if modesty is important to you, date someone who feels the same. You know, if fashion and self-expression are important to you, find someone who find someone who celebrates that. You know, relationships become exhausting when they're built on constant, you know, renovation instead of appreciation. And here's another thing: don't make permanent rules based on one uncomfortable, you know, table moment. You know, or one uncomfortable moment. You know, Edwin always got into a fight. Edwin almost got into a fight, but he didn't. His girlfriend didn't flirt back, she didn't respect, disrespect him. The guy walked away. That's actually a pretty positive ending, right? Don't let one incident rewrite your entire relationship. Use it as an opp opportunity to communicate. Because communication isn't about avoiding conflicts, it's about making sure conflict brings you closer instead of pushing you apart. You know, I'll tell you something, you know. Alicia and I, over the years, you know, the best conversations usually don't happen in the heart of the moment, in the heat of the moment, I'm sorry. They happen later, you know, when emotions settle down, when nobody is trying to win, when you're sitting on the couch or driving somewhere, and you can simply say, Hey, can we talk about something that's been on my mind? You know, those conversations build stronger relationships than any argument ever will. Because you're choosing understanding over being right, right? You gotta understand that before you you know, it's not gonna get you anywhere if everyone's trying to be right or you know stuff like that, you know. So the more I thought about Edwin's letter, you know, the more I realized it isn't really about what your girlfriend is wearing. You know, it's about something much deeper, it's about feeling respected, it's about wanting to know when life puts temptation, attention, or uncomfortable situations in front of your relationship. The two of you are on the same team, and I think that the part that's the part a lot of people miss. Relationships aren't you versus your partner, you know, they're the two of you versus the problem. Sometimes we spend so much time trying to prove our point that we forget the person sitting across from us isn't the enemy, right? They're supposed to be your teammate, your soulmate. So if I were sitting across from Edwin having a cup of coffee, here's what I'd tell him first. I don't drink coffee, but having a soda or whatever the heck, you know. Um, you know, don't let one moment define your relationship, bro. From everything you've shared, your girlfriend didn't encourage the conversation, she didn't hide you, she didn't flirt back, she didn't give the guy her phone number, she didn't disrespect you. Someone approached her. That's a big difference now. That doesn't mean your feelings aren't valid, they're absolutely valid, you know. Seeing another man flirt with someone you love can stir up a lot of emotions, it can make you feel protective, it can make you feel uncomfortable, it can make you question yourself. You know, those are feelings, those feelings are humans, you know, they're they're they're natural, bro. The mistake would be pretending they don't exist because buried uh feelings don't disappear, they usually come back bigger the next time something happens. So don't bury them, share them respectfully, not with anger, not with accusations, not with ultimatums, just honesty, you know. Sometimes sometimes, like, you know, oh man can I tell you what was going through my head at the swap meet? You know, that's a conversation that not an argument, and then listen, you know, really listen because maybe she'll tell you something you've never considered. Maybe she'll say, I honestly didn't ever realize he was flirting until you walked over. Or I've dressed this way since before we met because it makes me feel confident, not because I'm looking for attention, or maybe she'll surprise you and say, I can understand why that bothered you. I never want you to feel disrespected, right? You never know if you don't have the conversation, right? Now, I also want to say something to everyone listening who might relate more to Edwin's girlfriend. You know, if your partner comes to you calmly, shares a concern, and is vulnerable enough to admit they're uncomfortable, you know, don't immediately assume they're trying to control you or change you. You know, sometimes they're simply asking to be understood. You know, we live in a world where people are very quick to defend themselves, but very slow to understand each other. You know, sometimes all your partner wants is, you know, I hear you. Not you're wrong, you know, those four words I hear you, can lower walls almost instantly. And to everyone listening, there's another lesson here that has nothing to do with relationships, respect. If you see someone you're interested in, there's nothing wrong with introducing yourself politely. But the moment you realize they're in a committed relationship, respect that, walk away, don't keep pushing, don't test those boundaries, don't turn it into a competition. You know, respect costs you nothing, and it says everything about your character. Now, before we wrap up, I want to ask everyone watching a few questions. Because I already know this comment section is gonna light up, you know. Be honest. Would you ask your boyfriend or girlfriend to dress differently? If your partner has always dressed a certain way, is it fair to ask them to change after you've been together? Do you dr do you think dressing more revealing naturally brings brings more attention? Or do you believe people will approach attractive people no matter what they're wearing? Where do you draw the line between having healthy boundaries and being controlled? And here's the biggest question of the day if you were Edwin, would this situation have bothered you, or would you or would you have laughed it off and kept walking? Right? I generally I genuinely want to hear your thoughts because I don't think there's one perfect answer. Every relationship is different, every couple has different boundaries, and what's important is that people feel respected, not controlled, not ignored, respected. You know, attention isn't always the enemy, even jealousy is always the enemy, the real enemy is poor communication. You know, a relationship doesn't become stronger because two people never face uncomfortable situations, right? It becomes stronger because they choose to face those situations together. So instead of saying you need to change, try asking, can you help me understand? Instead of saying you're just insecure. Try asking what made you feel that way. Understand the building trust, trust builds security. You know, love is always gonna is is love isn't always or love, isn't about controlling someone's choices, it's about creating a relationship where neither person wants to make choices that hurt the other, right? With that, Edwin, I I just want to say thank you for trusting us with your story. I hope today's conversation gives you another way to look at the situation, not from one or not from a place of fear, but from a place of communication. You know, to everyone watching, thank you for spending part of your day with me. If this conversation made you stop and think or remind you of a situation you've been through, I'd love to hear about it in the comments. Just remember, keep it respectful.
