So far, we've covered ways to fuel your body, calm your mind and get adequate sleep. But today we're talking about the final pillar of vibrant health, intentional movement. Let's dive into why moving your body daily can decrease inflammation, boost energy, and help you feel like the healthiest version of you.

Before we go any further, we probably should review just a little bit about what inflammation is. Inflammation is often seen as the enemy of the body. A different way to think about inflammation in your body is to see it as a helpful messenger relaying, important information to you. Many people tend to think of inflammation as causing pain in the body, when reframing our perspective to see it as an effect might actually be more helpful. Once we begin to think of this inflammation along with the pain associated with it, as an effect, we see more clearly how our lifestyle choices can cause much of this chronic inflammation. I'd like to talk a little bit more about inflammation, just to provide you with a basic overview. Inflammation is a natural process that allows your body to heal. Acute inflammation occurs when an injury, such as a sprained ankle happens, the ankle will get red and swollen and typically hurts for a few days. Chronic inflammation on the other hand. Is what we're actually talking about with this series on inflammation is much more subtle and it can last weeks, months, or even years. It can lead to a number of health problems, including: weight gain arthritis, heart disease, auto-immune diseases,

impaired immune function, and insulin resistance. Chronic inflammation impacts the way your body reacts to viruses and bacterial infections when inflammation is under control, your body is less likely to have an overactive immune system.

Chronic inflammation results from the following lifestyle factors an unhealthy diet stress, poor sleep, and a lack of intentional movement or exercise.

Why movement matters for inflammation? Chronic inflammation is the root cause of many health issues, but here's the good news. Intentional movement can actually act as a natural anti-inflammatory. It's about Intentional Movement, Not Overexertion! Let me be clear, this isn't about punishing workouts or hours at the gym. Intentional movement is about tuning into your body's needs. For some that might be a brisk 15 minute walk. For others, it could be yoga, pickleball, swimming, cross-country skiing, having a dance party in your living room. The key is to move with purpose and to find joy.

Feeling stressed or stuck? 10 minutes of stretching or a quick workout can calm your nervous system and reset your mind.

Here's my quick tip for your day. I challenge you to find one small way to incorporate intentional movement into your day. Maybe it's doing calf raises or squats as you brush your teeth in the morning? Or maybe you would park farther from work or school. Maybe you would take the stairs instead of the elevator.

Or enjoy a calming stretch before bed. Just stay consistent because it all adds up. In as little as 25 minutes, a day of physical exercise, memory, cognitive efficiency.

For seniors, this is actually particularly interesting because physical activity, intentional movement during the day can actually slow or prevent the cognitive effects of aging and associated disorders. Something to keep in mind for those of us who are in the senior set.

While watching your favourite show, commit to moving during every commercial break. You can try jumping jacks, marching in place, or even dancing. It's a quick way to sneak in bursts of movement.

Number two. Adding choreography to your cleanup. This might involve lunging while you're doing the vacuum cleaning, adding calf raises while doing the dishes, or squatting to pick up the laundry. You'll check two things off your list: a tidy home and a healthier you.

Number three. Desk disco! Stuck at your desk? Set a timer for every hour and take a two minute movement break and stretch. Do seated twists, or even shimmy in your chair. Yes.
