The Round of 32 just turned into a horror movie for the big names. Germany and the Netherlands both went home on the same night... both on penalties.

We break down the VAR call that wiped out Germany's winner (foul or robbery?), Paraguay keeper Orlando Gil turning into a wall, and Morocco's last-minute header over Van Dijk that proves they're nobody's dark horse.

Then we get into "Dictator Mbappé," the meme taking over the internet... and why every meme has a little truth in it. And the one everyone's arguing about: Ecuador's coach says a 3.5-hour flight became 9 hours right before facing host Mexico at the Azteca. Mind games or sabotage?

Plus a prediction for tonight that did not age quietly.

Hey guys and welcome to the football show. Today I can't bear the news. Uh if you haven't heard Germany is out, the Netherlands are out, both of them um on uh penalties. It was crazy. On the same night. I mean, even my wife that doesn't follow the sport, that doesn't follow football, I was texting her and she was like, This is insane. So let that sit for a second. Like all the betting, all the we were watching a betting commercial yesterday about like this, like uh, you know, put in the money and try to win some money ups, and uh there might be they must be making so much money because people are betting on the big names and they are dropping like flies. This world cup just turned into a horror movie for the big names. When meanwhile, the internet out there is calling this guy, Mbappé, a dictator. Uh, this actual edits military uniform like the whole shebang. And Ecuador's coach says uh three and a half hour flight somehow turned into a nine-hour flight before they play Mexico in the Azteca. Um, hmm, on purpose, uh sabotage, excuses. We're getting into all this in today's episode. I'm also welcome to the football show. Okay, so first off, uh I didn't mention Japan because I think a lot of people expected that, but man, I am freaking sad, and I think the internet is sad because we wanted to see more of like the nice Japanese uh, you know, team out there. We wanted to see more of their fans, we wanted to see more of like their incredible uh football. I mean the fact that they scored first and then they held you know Brazil online to the fact that they had to like score in the last minute uh with Martinelli, it was incredible. And you know, shout out to them. I feel a little sad that they in the second half they pushed defensively and they just decided to play a very decent defensive block. And again, it's Brazil that you know that's what happened. So uh shout out to Japan, all our friends, if you are watching us from there, man. I want to go and experience football in your country, man. I I truly do. So, quick update as we're reporting or as we're recording today's episode, uh Ivory Coast and Norway are playing, they're still 0-0. So if you see me go crazy, uh one of them is because one of them scored. But let's see at the brackets right now. So we had uh uh Paraguay waiting for France or Sweden, which is later today, as I'm recording this. So if you're watching it, you probably already know who won. Um, I'm assuming it's gonna be France. And let me tell you, if Paraguay ends up beating freaking France, um, like they've done with this crazy. I mean, that Paraguay story is one of those that are gonna we're gonna be telling for a long time here. Then we got Canada, Morocco. Morocco, we'll talk about that in just a second, but wow, what a team! Incredible! So I think that's gonna be a fiery game. Um, we'll make our predictions. Brazil is waiting the winner of this game, Ivory Coast or Norway. We'll see. Um, you know, could a uh a second African team continue the run? I mean, the fact that we have so many in this round uh is incredible, but I think uh most people want to see Highland uh continue to compete on this one. And then tonight we have uh Mexico Ecuador that's gonna be a banger. We're gonna talk again. Uh what uh in in just the show. So tell me your predictions to let it let me know in the comments below. Um, what are your thoughts on what's happening? Like, is this good a good World Cup? I mean, yesterday, the amount of times we brought our hands to our head as in like this is crazy. Um, so many. But anyways, so uh Germany, uh, if you're not living under the rook, obviously they drew one-on-one with Paraguay. Uh lucky, lucky, and and then they lost the shootout uh four to three. So there's a couple of facts on that one, but uh they actually had the winner. I mean, the whole nation screamed and uh the other nation, Paraguay, cried, but I guess it was taken away by VAR. Some people are telling uh are saying, hey, I do agree with this. I personally agree that that was a foul. Some other people are calling it weak, but you know, there's um I don't know if it's an unwritten rule in in football, but you do not touch the goalie or the keeper inside of the small box, and you could tell like the guy was turning around, uh the German player was facing forward, and yes, he's just standing there, but still uh it is a foul. The fact that we have the best referees here, I mean, lots to talk about. My opinion is a foul. My brother's opinion is not a foul. There's some Arsenal fans or some you know Premier League fans out there putting comments of you know, Arsenal should not have won the Premier League uh title if that was a foul. Let me know in the comments what do you think. But yeah, brutal way to go. I mean, this doesn't hide the fact that Paraguay's goalie, Orlando Hill, uh, turned into a freaking wall. This guy is massive, and he saved two penalties. Uh, every goalkeeper out there, all the interviews that I've seen, they're so proud of this guy. I mean, the fact also his background, like where he's coming from, like he had to move to Argentina from a very young age from Paraguay to pursue his dream. He has a very young kid, and and you can see like how much this means uh to him. So very cool. Uh, Paraguay, we said it before the freaking World Cup started, and even after the defeat uh against the United States, they might not be a big name, and I'm doing air quotations here for those listening. But these guys, you better watch out, man. They're scrappy, they're gonna go for it. They have like we call that cheese, like that spark. Um, they're gonna play mentally with you, they're gonna talk to you uh inside of the field, and that makes a very dangerous team. Like that, like the coach said in the press conference, they come from from playing in the freaking red dirt, like they have red dirt in Paraguay, that's what they're known for, uh, in their with their desserts and different things, and they come from there, and it's like he's like, We're not, we don't care about these teams that have you know perfect uh perfect you know pitches and perfect academies and all this stuff. We're here to battle and I win. And as a South American, I feel very proud, man. It's gonna be very good. Uh then we have the Dutch tying again one-on-one with Morocco, and then they lost 3-2 on the penalty. Also, gun. Uh by the way, I put those two. I put that the Germany and uh Netherlands were gonna go through in my predictions. Uh, but Morocco truly freaking impressed me. Like they equalizing the last minute, what a goal. I mean, the subs, just quality, chef's kiss, right? Like this guy with a perfect cruise, and then the header was just incredible. The guy just stood up like a freaking tower, and uh, and honestly, they deserved it. Like, uh, you could see Netherlands, all the subs that they made with, they were defensive subs. Uh, you know, uh, not the fact that not taking away from like their goal and Gakpa and the whole story with his kid passing away, his unborn child passing away um in the last few days. It was very emotional for him celebrating that goal and not taking away anything from there, but after that, all the subs were very defensive. You could tell in extra time that you know you have seven people that are defensive players trying to hold down the fort to go to PK's. And at the end of the day, you know, Morocco was the one that that could. So they coalized in the last minute. Like I said, header uh right over Van Dyke, he just stood there. Um, he had a great game. There were a couple like center back saves that were incredible. So if you haven't seen the summary, go go check it out. And uh my favorite play there was uh Netherlands assists to the goal. I mean, this guy just falling, freaking throwing the the the ball right as he's falling. Incredible. And then you know, Brazil, like I said earlier, almost joined them. Uh one down one from from Japan. We all anyways, if I continue to talk about Japan, I'm just gonna cry. But um, a lot of people are calling uh Morocco uh a surprise. I don't think so. I mean, these guys made it to the semifinal in the last World Cup, they uh made it to the finals in the African Cup. This is probably one of the strongest teams out here. So um I don't think he's a dark horse. A lot of people are calling it a dark dark horse. This is not a fluke. You can see all these guys have a lot of experience, they're hungry for success for that country, even though most of them are not born in that country. But what a team, man. They're intense, they're fast, their their ability on the ball is incredible. And I think Europeans or like different nations that traditionally have been good, they're being caught by surprise by these quote-unquote smaller teams. So keep an eye out. It's gonna be fun. Um, I don't remember such an entertaining uh World Cup in a long time. Um, especially a lot of surprises that the way that these teams play. Earlier, we saw some comments in uh in our social media about like identity and like do we feel like some of these teams are losing identity because they're bringing players from all over? I think identity is being built as we speak. Um if the identity doesn't serve you anymore because the game has evolved uh so much, should you keep that identity? I don't think so. I think the sport needs to evolve. I mean, we've seen the pendulum go to like super tactically, you know, like uh Pep Guardiola style where you know two touches, one touches, and the team kind of moves around. To now we're seeing all these teams with disruptors that dribble through and they can break those systems. So now the pendulum is swimming in the other way, and I think is is way more exciting that way. I feel like we're finally getting back that like spark from a lot of of the teams. So um excited about the games uh today, Ivory Coast, France, Sweden, and then Mexico, Ecuador. That one's gonna be fire. We're gonna talk about in just a second. Now, the dictator. So while teams were going home, one player took over the whole freaking internet, and it's been happening for a while now, for a few weeks. So the dictator Mbappé. Uh, this meme is freaking everywhere. All the AI edit edits, all the military uniform, the whole vibe. And this started back uh PSG. So fans uh basically saying that he had way too much power, and I think we can agree with that. There is like Luis Enrique talking about, you know, when we don't have Mbapped, this is what's gonna happen, and you know, they freaking dominated Europe for two seasons in a row. Uh, and then of course, after he joined Madrid, this completely exploded. I think my personal opinion is that every meme has a source of truth. So I don't think people are gonna, you know, the reason they resonate is because there's a truth element to this. Is it exaggerated? Maybe. So uh, you know, people point out the real stuff, you know, talk taking the Captain Armand. That was kind of crazy. I mean, we don't know the internal story there. I would love to at some point, you know, have a conversation and see what happens. Or, you know, skipping the guard of honor for Barcelona, another one. Little I'm kidding. Obviously, I'm a Barça fan, so this season's gonna be fun. Uh, there's also a rumor that he got Chavi Alonso freaking pushed out of Madrid. Uh, rumor. I'm not saying you know, I'm just saying the rumor. All Madridistas don't don't go crazy on me. But this is crazy. Chavi Alonso, a legend of the club, a unbeaten coach in Leverkusen that brought that team to championship uh unbeaten after so many years. Um, and somehow, you know, it's his fault. I I I don't know, man. Like, uh, I think the only team by the way, oh wow, Norway just scored. Let's go. Okay. Um, you might not know the you might know the final score by by now, but crazy. Awesome. Good for them, man. Good for them. Um they're having a good run too. Good to see that. But anyways, um, so why are these like memes surfacing? Is it's been a couple of years already, and you know, these guys that are really good players and that they make history, and like for them, I think like they don't even pay attention to this stuff, but the internet, right? Like, they wanna fight against that guy, right? He's being the guy in the freaking World Cup. Like, he's he's a beast, he's unstoppable. Um we're gonna see him today play, and he's probably gonna crush. So there's a big debate. Like, is it great for his brand or it or is a slow primitive? Personally, I think it motivates him. I think he sees that he just laughs and keeps moving. These players have a good mentality, and uh is something that comes with uh with the job, right? Um so hold on. I just lost bam, I just lost uh my notes. Okay, here the dictator. Where are we? Okay, so um like I said, if you're good, if if it's like on F1 with Verstappen, for example, this guy doesn't care what people say. They at this level, there's so many layers to you know the game that I don't think it affects him at all. I think it if anything it motivates him. So um we'll see. We'll see what happens with uh the dictator today. So uh from a guy that's accused of controlling everything, uh you know, uh we'll see. I think we'll we'll I'm in the boat of letting the the the football do the talking. So it's probably gonna shut us all down. Okay, so as we wrap up this uh this episode today, I want to talk about the nine-hour flight, and uh this has sparked a lot of fire in uh freaking social media, especially through Hispanics, and you know, there's like this rivalry between like Mexico and the South American continent. You'll see it with Mexico and Argentinians, Mexico and Colombians, and Mexico now Equatorians. You've seen some people online, maybe you know, talking back at each other and so on. And um, I had the experience to to go to a game, it was Venezuela versus uh Mexico in Atlanta, and we're like the only two Venezuelans in like our section, and it got pretty heated, not gonna lie. So for some reason, every time their national team plays, they forget that they have friends all over, and like it's war. Uh, so they play, Ecuador plays tonight uh in the Stadio Azteca in front of like 80 plus thousand people, and uh their coach came out swinging before kickoff, right? So um he says that normally a three and a half hour flight turned into a nine hour, so it delayed three hours past schedule, and this is you know, quote, like, and we don't really know why, he said. Uh players were supposed to be at the hotel at six and uh they weren't there, you know. So so these uh he was very careful in what he said, but but he did say that every other trip was freaking perfect, like for Philly, for New York, for Kansas, like where the Equatorian team has played, it has been perfect. But now for some reason, when they go to Mexico, these things happen. And it's crazy that a host nation allegedly uh is doing this. Um who knows? Maybe it was a real problem. But I'm not surprised that there was a guy somewhere in Mexico be like, hmm, how fun would it be if this happens? And sometimes some sometimes it could happen. So um, you know, he of course they're gonna go battle in a in the host country against the host country, and uh, you know sometimes perception can be blurred a bit, and that's why he said what he said. So uh Mexico's the closer of of course, and uh freaking Ecuador already beat Germany, so it is scary, it's gonna be a freaking good game. Like are these mind games? Like, is there like a real problem happening here? Like, I think there is probably should be an investigation of what these things happen. Um so host nations, they do get a little bit of uh, you know, extra treatment, mm-hmm. Like, is he planting a seed to get in the heads of the other players and uh Mexico? Uh I mean, I don't know. You could see like the footage of the Mexican fans going to Ecuador's hotel and just being noisy all night long. And this is something normal that happens in the world of football. Uh you can see it, and I just literally just saw a video which was uh incredible where uh there's like this Equatorian uh journalist filming the fans from inside the hotel. You could tell a little bit of noise, and he's like, guys, like continue to do it, this is not affecting us, you know. From little, you know, we we uh grew up and we fall asleep to the sound of TV. We grew up and you know our part our our parents party, and this is a Hispanic thing. Our our parents party and like we just fall asleep with the live music or or the freaking DJ, like just right there on the chairs, like if it's a wedding or a 15 años, like that happens, like we can't sleep through noise. So uh he's like, Yeah, we're just not scared. And I think this just adds that little extra uh spice to the game tonight. Uh so we'll see. By the time that you're watching this or or listening to this, this game already happened. My prediction Ecuador is gonna knock out Mexico, but it's gonna be a tough one just because they're playing in home field and it's gonna be an intense game. I hope these revs are freaking um ready for this game because it's gonna be tough. I think it's gonna be a very physical game. I think it's gonna get heated, I think we're gonna see a ton of cards, and uh only one can prevail. So is Ecuador gonna be you know kick out Mexico from their their very own World Cup? That's gonna be good. Uh apart from that, I think uh I think we're gonna stop it right here. I'm excited uh for anything that that could happen. Yeah, man, this workout is awesome. So I'll see you tomorrow. Take care.
