So it's not all that"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":99.111,"endTime":104.311,"body":"old that we've actually had this"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":104.311,"endTime":107.549,"body":"technology. Now, obviously, ABS"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":104.311,"endTime":107.549,"body":"had existed on cars before it"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":107.549,"endTime":110.989,"body":"was brought into motorcycles,"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":107.549,"endTime":110.989,"body":"but adding it onto two wheels"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":110.989,"endTime":114.655,"body":"was thought to be a very"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":110.989,"endTime":114.655,"body":"valuable feature. if we think of"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":114.655,"endTime":117.675,"body":"the timeline for this, disc"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":114.655,"endTime":117.675,"body":"brakes had started to become"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":117.675,"endTime":120.715,"body":"more prevalent on motorcycles"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":117.675,"endTime":120.715,"body":"around that time. And this gave"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":120.715,"endTime":125.555,"body":"even more braking power and more"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":120.715,"endTime":125.555,"body":"potential to overwhelm a tire's"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":125.555,"endTime":129.63,"body":"grip when you were slowing down."},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":125.555,"endTime":129.63,"body":"Now, ABS works by comparing the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":129.63,"endTime":133.51,"body":"rotation of the front versus the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":129.63,"endTime":133.51,"body":"rear wheel to determine that a"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":133.51,"endTime":137.166,"body":"wheel is actually locking Now,"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":133.51,"endTime":137.166,"body":"this first system that was put"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":137.166,"endTime":143.866,"body":"together by BMW weighed 11"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":137.166,"endTime":143.866,"body":"kilograms, which is about 23, 24"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":143.866,"endTime":146.805,"body":"pounds. It's a good amount. And"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":143.866,"endTime":146.805,"body":"today, of course, you'll be able"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":146.805,"endTime":149.485,"body":"to find an ABS system that's"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":146.805,"endTime":149.485,"body":"going to usually weigh less than"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":149.485,"endTime":153.365,"body":"two kilograms. So much, much"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":149.485,"endTime":153.365,"body":"lighter. So if we think of those"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":153.365,"endTime":156.765,"body":"early systems, they were just"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":153.365,"endTime":156.765,"body":"really, really heavy, but it did"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":156.765,"endTime":161.005,"body":"provide a capability that we did"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":156.765,"endTime":161.005,"body":"not have on motorcycles in the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":161.005,"endTime":164.285,"body":"past. Now, these early systems,"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":161.005,"endTime":164.285,"body":"they worked by pulsing the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":164.285,"endTime":167.445,"body":"brakes. And what this would do"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":164.285,"endTime":167.445,"body":"is that if the brake was locking"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":167.445,"endTime":170.825,"body":"up that tire by pulsing the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":167.445,"endTime":170.825,"body":"brake, you allowed it to kind of"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":170.825,"endTime":175.525,"body":"get moments where it could"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":170.825,"endTime":175.525,"body":"rotate and this could maintain"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":175.525,"endTime":179.145,"body":"control. This is typically more"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":175.525,"endTime":179.145,"body":"critical on the front than on"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":179.145,"endTime":182.214,"body":"the rear, because if you lock up"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":179.145,"endTime":182.214,"body":"that front brake, you're also"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":182.214,"endTime":184.394,"body":"going to lose any sort of"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":182.214,"endTime":184.394,"body":"steering capability that you"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":184.394,"endTime":187.454,"body":"have. have the bikes tire will"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":184.394,"endTime":187.454,"body":"just continue going in the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":187.454,"endTime":190.995,"body":"momentum of where the bike was"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":187.454,"endTime":190.995,"body":"already heading. Now, modern ABS"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":190.995,"endTime":194.715,"body":"is more sensitive, and it can"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":190.995,"endTime":194.715,"body":"not just pulse the brakes, but"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":194.715,"endTime":200.015,"body":"it can even adjust the pressure"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":194.715,"endTime":200.015,"body":"to maximize braking. So early"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":200.015,"endTime":202.555,"body":"systems really had this kind of"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":200.015,"endTime":202.555,"body":"like clattering type of a"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":202.555,"endTime":206.275,"body":"feeling, whereas a modern ABS"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":202.555,"endTime":206.275,"body":"system, you may not even notice"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":206.275,"endTime":209.776,"body":"that it's actually working."},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":206.275,"endTime":209.776,"body":"makes it a little bit feel less"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":209.776,"endTime":213.515,"body":"intrusive to a rider than the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":209.776,"endTime":213.515,"body":"early systems did. And the first"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":244.206,"endTime":249.363,"body":"one of these is linked brakes."},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":244.206,"endTime":249.363,"body":"Now motorcycles will have both a"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":249.363,"endTime":253.071,"body":"independent front brake and an"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":249.363,"endTime":253.071,"body":"independent rear brake. So these"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":253.071,"endTime":257.051,"body":"two different braking allows the"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":253.071,"endTime":257.051,"body":"rider to have maximum control"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":257.051,"endTime":260.751,"body":"over where they put the amount"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":257.051,"endTime":260.751,"body":"of braking force, whether they"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":260.751,"endTime":264.431,"body":"favor more towards the front or"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":260.751,"endTime":264.431,"body":"more towards the rear or even"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":264.431,"endTime":268.299,"body":"using one at the exclusion of"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":264.431,"endTime":268.299,"body":"the other. The problem is, is"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":268.299,"endTime":271.179,"body":"that what happens is that some"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":268.299,"endTime":271.179,"body":"riders would really only favor"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":271.179,"endTime":275.479,"body":"one brake over the other, and"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":271.179,"endTime":275.479,"body":"this does limit your braking"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":275.479,"endTime":278.585,"body":"capability. oftentimes,"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":275.479,"endTime":278.585,"body":"especially for a newer rider,"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":278.585,"endTime":281.625,"body":"they're only going to be using"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":278.585,"endTime":281.625,"body":"that rear brake. And the problem"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":281.625,"endTime":284.405,"body":"is that when you're trying to"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":281.625,"endTime":284.405,"body":"slow down a big bike going at a"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":284.405,"endTime":288.425,"body":"good speed, the rear brake is"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":284.405,"endTime":288.425,"body":"only providing maybe about 30%"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":288.425,"endTime":292.045,"body":"of the braking force. And"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":288.425,"endTime":292.045,"body":"because the bike naturally"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":292.045,"endTime":295.965,"body":"shifts forward, what happens is"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":292.045,"endTime":295.965,"body":"that weight transfer occurs, and"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":295.965,"endTime":298.725,"body":"that's why you get less braking"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":295.965,"endTime":298.725,"body":"capability with the rear brake."},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":298.852,"endTime":301.482,"body":"With less weight on the rear"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":298.852,"endTime":301.482,"body":"wheel, of course, now it's more"},{"speaker":"Niels","startTime":301.482,"endTime":304.042,"body":"likely to lock.
