Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Skip Monty.

Speaker 2:

Hello everyone and welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast of the Tri-Cities. So we've got a very special guest with us here today, whom I'm super excited to learn more about him and his organization, because we talk to a lot of folks in the real estate business on this show and we're very fortunate today to have a unique person in business with us, and because I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, mr Dwayne Powell, who's the owner-operator of Real Estate Training and Education Center. Dwayne, welcome to the show.

Speaker 3:

Hi Skip, how are you?

Speaker 2:

Education.

Speaker 3:

Center Dwayne. Welcome to the show. Hi Skip, how are you? I'm doing just fine. Like I said, I'm super excited to have back in 2005, and we have three locations. We're located in Kingsport, tennessee, johnson City and also in Crossville. We're about ready to put a new location over in Bristol, since we just got approved to teach in Virginia pre-license as well as Tennessee.

Speaker 2:

Three locations and how long have you been in business?

Speaker 3:

33 years three locations.

Speaker 2:

And how long have you been in business? Uh, 33 years. 33 years, wow, well, congratulations.

Speaker 3:

That's obviously something's working after 33 years so, uh, duane, how did you get into this, how did you get into this business? Uh, you want the honest truth on that. Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Well, I bought my first house and I really wasn't impressed with realtors at that time. So I came into the business thinking I was going to make a difference as one individual, and apparently I have.

Speaker 2:

Wow, wow. So you were motivated by a bad experience with a realtor Exactly, wow, wow, wow. So you were motivated by a bad experience with a realtor Exactly, wow, wow. Hey, obviously you're doing something right. 33 years is nothing to sneeze at. So what are some myths or misconceptions in the real estate business that you can think of?

Speaker 3:

real estate business that you can think of. Well, a lot of the things that you have to look at in the business is you know, how good is your agent, how well is that agent going to represent you in your transaction? You know, that's what I pushed through the real estate school is the professionalism and the ethics in the market. So that has actually bled over into other companies as well as the company that I broker as well very good very good.

Speaker 2:

Well, it sounds like you're a pretty busy guy. You've got three locations. What uh outside of work? If you have time, what do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

well, I've got a camper set up at the ocean that I go visit on occasion, so very nice, very nice sounds good to me and hopefully you get an opportunity to go occasionally. Oh, I go quite often. The thing of it is this is not a nine to five job. I mean, you actually become your business whenever you get into real estate and you've got to have a passion and a love for the business to continue on.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely. Couldn't agree more. Well, let's switch gears. Can you think of a hardship you've gone through, whether personal or professional? I mean sorry, yeah, personal or professional that you came through and when you came out the other side, you were better for?

Speaker 3:

it. I mean, we grow every day in this business. You know, the hardest time that I had was when I first started. Whenever I got into real estate, interest rates were at 18%. So you know, the 7% that we're experiencing today is really not that big of a deal compared to back then. But I learned from it by learning how to navigate the transactions and sometimes you got to get creative and you know again. That's stuff that I put into the training to these new agents when you go through the program, do you get some kind of certification?

Speaker 2:

when you go through the program, do you get some kind?

Speaker 3:

of certification. Well, in order to get your real estate license, you're required to have the two classes in Tennessee. That's what we teach is the pre-licensed courses and once they complete both classes, then they are eligible to sit down for their state exam.

Speaker 2:

Once they pass their state exam, then they find a broker to hang their license with. Okay, well, if, if, dwayne, you could think of one thing you would like our listeners to remember about the, the real estate training and education center, what would that be Well.

Speaker 3:

Remember that. You know, if you ever choose to get into the real estate business, it's not a job, it's a career and you're building a business just like you would a retail store. You've got to start with your location, your inventory, and you know you've got to learn how to learn the business and you know I like I tell you agents you've got to get over your confidence issues in order to do this business. You've got to learn how to get out there and talk to people and you've got to learn how to represent people in the proper way and just in just about any business where you deal with the public, that's a big deal.

Speaker 3:

Exactly.

Speaker 2:

Very good. Well, dwayne, if you could think of one thing you would like our listeners that might be interested in becoming a realtor or going through the training how can they learn more?

Speaker 3:

or going through the training. How can they learn more? Well, I mean, of course I've got a website, but the best way to learn more is just to contact me, and I mean I can fill people in on how to get started in the real estate business. You know, not only do I have the real estate school, but I'm also a broker and I have roughly 100 agents that work for me at Weicker Realtors. And the biggest thing is is you've got to come to the determination that you're going into a career, you're not going into just a job, but that's pretty much the scope of it.

Speaker 2:

Very good. But a good thing to remember. A good thing to remember, and how can we learn more If I decide I want to go to school? How can I learn more about you?

Speaker 3:

Well, you can go to my website. It's wwwrealestateeducationcom. Hang on a second dot real estate education and hang on a second. That's no, it's wwwrealestatetrainingandeducationcom. Or you can contact me directly at 423-863-4514.

Speaker 2:

423-863-4514.

Speaker 3:

That is correct, yes, sir.

Speaker 2:

Very good, very good, awesome. Well, dwayne, I really appreciate you being on the show. You sound like you're a busy guy, and so I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking the time out of your busy schedule to talk to us about what you do, and we wish you and your family and the Real Estate Training and Education Center all the best.
