Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Skip Monty.

Speaker 2:

Well, hello everyone and welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast of the Tri-Cities. So today we've got a very special guest with us and I'm excited to learn all about him and his business. And I'm sure you will be as well, because today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, mr Richard Sherritt, with Summit Properties. Richard, welcome to the show.

Speaker 3:

Awesome. Thank you, Skip. It's a pleasure to be here Awesome.

Speaker 2:

Well, it's a pleasure to have you and, like I said, we're all excited to learn about you and your business. So, if you don't mind, why don't you tell us about what you do? Like I said, we're all excited to learn about you and your business.

Speaker 3:

So if you don't mind, why don't you tell us about what you do? Yeah, so I'm a licensed realtor here in the Tri-Cities and, like you said, I work for Summit Properties. We're based out of Kingsport, tennessee, you know, just serving the clients in and around Tri-Cities and the outlying. You know cities and counties around the area. Yeah, and I just love being a realtor. I love connecting with people and just trying to assist people through that process.

Speaker 2:

I really feel the value behind that Very good. Well, Richard, how did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, and so I worked for many years. You know I worked in a corporate position. You know managing, you know a lot of people and a lot of systems and really you know just was burned out. I worked 12, 14 hours a day. You know 50 plus hours a week I was. You know I transitioned to a night shift schedule, thinking that I'm really just climbing the corporate ladder. But in the end I was taken away from my family, taken away just from my life in general, mentally, emotionally. And I had an opportunity. I had a friend of mine that was working as a realtor and just kind of like helped me through the process. I met the wonderful brokers and owners up here at Summit Properties and they really assisted me through this whole transition and it's been nothing but amazing for me to be able to have this opportunity. I've always had those thoughts of grandeur to be a salesperson and do all those things, but you know, now it's a reality, so I love it.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. Well, I couldn't. I couldn't agree with you more, brother. I spent a lot of time in the corporate world too, and I totally get that. I totally get that, so yeah, so what are some in the real estate business, what are some myths or misconceptions in your industry?

Speaker 3:

Well, it's funny that you say that. I mean I've heard it even before. You know I was a become a realtor is that you know real estate agents don't do much. They put the sign in the yard, they kick their feet up and basically they just sit back and just wait for a buyer to come along.

Speaker 3:

Well, now that I've been in it for some time, I realize that that's not the case, especially if you genuinely care about your sellers, your buyers, just the people in general. I mean, you're going to work hard, you're going to grind. Yeah, I work long hours, but I kind of get to choose. The flexibility is there for me. And so really the misconception is that realtors don't do much. I can tell you this I'm on the road, sometimes three, four, five hours a day. I'm on the phones calling for my sellers and buyers, trying to connect the two, sometimes three and four hours a day, just really trying to take that quality, that pride not counting the continued education, attending classes and conferences and seminars and just really trying to be the best person that I can be for you know, my clients and the people that's around me.

Speaker 3:

And then the last thing that I that I want to say is, you know, a lot of times folks think that they can sell their home on their own, and, granted, there is sometimes that they can Not, saying that, there's never a time where a person couldn't do that if they had a family member, a coworker, a friend or something like that. But for the vast majority, most of the time folks who sell their home by owner, they lose five to 7% of their asking price. So it's not an easy task. There's a lot of stress, there's a lot of strain, not counting the keeping up with the paperwork, making sure it's accurate, making sure that you know you're you know, going by the law, and things of that nature. So what my encouragement would be is find someone you know, sit down with someone professional, who can coach you through that process, because it's not easy, you know, and you might end up losing more money than what you think you're going to save.

Speaker 2:

Well, I can speak from experience that I've bought and sold a number of houses in my life and I've used a realtor every time. But one, and that was the last time. Yeah, it is. There's a lot to it and there's a lot you just don't think about. Till you're in the middle of it, you're thinking, wow, I wish, I wish.

Speaker 3:

I used a realtor? Yeah, absolutely, and we hear that quite a bit. But the reality is, you know, there's a lot of misconceptions. There's just a lot of folks you know are just taken back by using a realtor. But in the end, it's about finding the right person. It's not a one size fits all with realtors, you know. I believe you've got to find the person that you're most comfortable with, find the one that is going to give you the greatest value and it's going to coach you through the process, you know, with integrity and trust.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely. That means a lot Well outside of work. Richard, what do you like to do for fun?

Speaker 3:

Well, you know, about three years ago I purchased a motorcycle. So I went through all the classes, got certified, got my license and I love, you know, during the summer, spring and summertime, I love riding the bike and just cruising with some friends, sometimes just by myself. It's a, you know, it's a relaxing thing for me. I love to travel, we love to travel. Sometimes they're not always big trips, but sometimes we'll go on small little trips, a little road trip or something we love just visiting different places, you know, and studying about the different areas and the cultures and things of that nature, and just trying to, you know, be developed. That way, you know, just learn, I love it.

Speaker 2:

Wow, so do you take? When you take the small trips, do you take your bike?

Speaker 3:

Sometimes we do Like if we're going down to like Gatlinburg, or if we go to and we're going like up on the mountain and stuff somewhere where we've never been before, like in North Carolina, we will, but most of the time I don't take the bike.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that's probably a good idea. But now when you go to Gatlinburg, you ever ride the tail of the dragon.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tail of the dragon, yeah, and then we yeah, and then we go up on run or up on South Holston and ride that sometimes.

Speaker 2:

So very nice, very nice. Well, let's, let's switch gears for just a second. Richard, can you describe a hardship or a life challenge that you've ever come, either professionally or personally, and came out stronger on the other side?

Speaker 3:

Well, you know, early on in my life I just really didn't have, you know I was, I graduated with a great, you know really good grades and things of that nature. I just made some poor choices early on in life and kind of surrounded myself around some folks, you know, just a group of people. That wasn't the best. So I kind of lost the my momentum early on in my life. My momentum early on um in my life. But, you know, with you know with my relationship with Christ, and uh, being able to um further myself, educate myself, um and spend some time, you know, just developing who I really am, Um, I've been able to overcome all that you know, um bouts of depression and things of that nature, um, just trying to define myself in this life.

Speaker 3:

I all that you know bouts of depression, things of that nature, just trying to define myself in this life. I think that you know a lot of folks deal with that. But really, in the end, I think you got to surround yourself with the people that genuinely care about you and I've been able to do that here with Summit Properties. It's like a family, it's not just a brokerage, you know. Know we actually genuinely care about each other. We try to help each other, support each other in all aspects of our life. So I think I found that, that place. You know that where I, where I belong, who I can really be, who I am, so who I want to be Awesome.

Speaker 2:

Awesome, Especially with you know, with God in the middle, you can't go wrong. Yes, sir, Absolutely Well. Richard, if you could think of one thing you'd like our listeners to remember about you and about Summit Properties, what would that be?

Speaker 3:

to say is whether it be me or someone from Summit Properties, or whether it be another realtor that you feel most comfortable with, take the time to get some professional consultation and to really dig in and, like you said before, that experience you had while doing it on your own it's a stressful time.

Speaker 3:

You can literally risk legal ramifications as well as the loss of money money that can be in your pocket for you and your family and just at least get the consultation, at least reach out to someone that you trust, that you feel comfortable with, that you feel like you can actually do business with, and then go from there.

Speaker 3:

You're never, you know, bound to anything. You know, at any time you can always get that kind of professional information and then decide to go a different route. But that's what I would want to say is just take the time to do your research, find a brokerage that you feel most comfortable with. We're always here to help and that's the way I can genuinely say every one of the agents here at Summit Properties feels is just really want to help folks, want to help folks find their way and get them the most for their home or find them the best home if you're a buyer, whatever the situation may be Very good, very good, and if any of our listeners are interested and would like to learn more about you or Summit Properties, how can they do that?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so feel free to go to our website at summitpropertiestnvacom, visit the website, browse through the different agents, the different listings, that we have different opportunities, that we have, learn a little bit about us, and then, if you want to give us a call, call 423-830-1133.
